CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PURCHASE OF SPEAKEASY’S
ADVANCED PEDAL TECHNOLOGY!
The Juice Joint overdrive pedal gives you access to a wide range of overdrive
tones reminiscent of those created by classic tube amplifiers. The unique Proof
circuit emulates interactions that occur between the power supply and the output
stage of a great-sounding tube amp operated near its limits. Controls are carefully
designed to provide useful tones throughout their range, allowing settings from a
mild clean boost to heavily saturated distortion, all with exceptionally low noise.
GAIN –
The Gain knob simultaneously adjusts the amount of gain and
equalization before the distortion stages. The lowest settings allow some amount
of clean boost before the onset of distortion, especially at low settings of the Proof
control. Higher settings drive the clipping stages into progressively more distortion,
while simultaneously attenuating low frequencies to prevent muddiness. At the
highest settings a second asymmetrical clipping stage is engaged, adding more
harmonic content.
SIP, GULP, GUZZLE –
The three-position voicing switch works in
conjunction with the Gain control. The “Sip” setting yields the lowest range for the
Gain control, as well as the least amount of pre-distortion low-frequency roll-off.
Use this setting for the most transparent tones. The “Gulp” setting boosts the
range of the Gain control by 6 dB, and adds more pre-distortion bass cut as gain is
increased. This setting provides a range of overdrive tones with a bit of mid-range
emphasis that will help cut through a mix. The “Guzzle” setting bumps the gain
range by another 6 dB, and provides even more pre-distortion bass cut. This setting
is for the most aggressive distortion tones. While there is considerable overlap in
the amount of gain available for each setting, the equalization at any particular
gain will be different for each setting of the Voicing switch.

PROOF – The Proof knob controls the amount of dynamic headroom in the
main distortion stage. As this control is increased, the amount of distortion
becomes a dynamic function of how hard you play.
Moderate settings (near 12 o’clock) can emulate the feel of a tube amplifier
with an overdriven output stage, while high settings (above 9 o’clock) take this
touch sensitivity to a degree beyond any amplifier. Turning up the Proof control
with the Gain control at fairly low settings results in a feel similar to that of
a small vintage tube amp with a simple low-gain preamp, where the tone is
fairly clean until the power amp just doesn’t have anything more to give. Much
of the magic of the Juice Joint is made by exploring the infinite possibilities
available from the combination of the Gain and Proof controls.
LEVEL – The Level control adjusts the overall output level. Use it to restore
the overall volume at high settings of the Proof control without changing the
tone and feel.
TASTE – The Taste control adjusts the overall high-frequency content,
attenuating treble as it is rotated counter-clockwise.As the name suggests,
use to taste.
INTERNAL BASS TRIM – There is an internal Bass trimpot which
adjusts the amount of post-distortion bass boost. The factory setting (nearly
centered) is adjusted for the most transparent response with the Voice switch
set to “Sip” and the Gain control centered. It is best to adjust this trimpot after
you’ve found your favorite settings of the front-panel controls.

The Juice Joint is protected from reverse-polarity DC power applied to the
power jack but damage may occur if it remains connected for more than a
few minutes. If you connect your power supply and do not see the green LED
illuminate when the footswitch is activated, disconnect the power supply
immediately and check the polarity of your supply.
