PaulyWinder Installation Guide
Removing the Flyer Bars:
1. Remove the orifice bar and the bobbin from your
flyer.
2. Uninstall your flyer bars by unscrewing the two
screws behind the flyer head that secure the flyer
bars into the head. These screws may be square or
phillips head.
3. After removing the screws, pull or twist the bars to
remove them from the flyer head. It is common for
the bars to be securely fit into the flyer head.
Note: If your wheel model is not Golden Whorl, there may
be additional assembly required. Before continuing with
additional disassembly, inspect your flyer to see if your
PaulyWinder and screw kit can be used without further
disassembly. If your flyer has too much depth to install the PaulyWinder, you will need
to remove either the ring or the triangular wooden points as described below:
●If your Flyer head measures 1.5
inches deep, you will need to
remove the four screws and the
wooden ring (.5 inches) from the
face of your flyer to install the
PaulyWinder.
●If your flyer has triangular wooden
points (see picture), you may need
to remove these when installing the
PaulyWinder.

Installing the PaulyWinder
Place the back of the PaulyWinder (screw hole) into the flyer hole and attach to the
flyer using the screw provided with your installation kit. Do not use power tools, as they
may strip the plastic.
Installing the Balance Bar
After installing the PaulyWinder bar you will install the balance bar. Install the balance
bar so that it is to the left of the PaulyWinder as pictured. Note that the front of each
PaulyWinder flyer bar has a magnet with a flat “key” that fits into your orifice. Install
the Balance bar so that the “key” is facing upward so your orifice bar will attach to it.
Aligning the Flyer
After installing the PaulyWinder, align it by putting the orifice bar on. You may need to
twist either the PaulyWinder or the balance bar to get the orifice bar to snap into place

on the magnets. If your orifice bar does not go onto the flyer, confirm that you have the
balance bar installed with flat side (right above the magnet) facing upward. After you
have aligned the PaulyWinder by putting the orifice bar on, tighten the screws on the
back of the flyer to secure the alignment.
Note: Never treadle the PaulyWinder without the orifice bar. This will cause damage to
the PaulyWinder.
Installing the Fulcrum Pin
Next, install the fulcrum pin. Place one
washer on the screw, and place the screw
thru the hole at the top of the post. Place
another washer on the silver screw that is
poking thru the hole in the post and secure
by hand-tightening the pin onto the screw
as pictured. Do not over tighten. The pin
should be placed close to the spinner,
resting against the black alignment screw
in the PaulyWinder. Note: when you begin
to use the PaulyWinder you will adjust the
fulcrum pin with the black alignment
screw if your yarn is not being wound all
the way to the back of the bobbin.
Installing the Gates
The gates are installed with the curves
facing the outside and the flat sides facing
each other as pictured. Squeeze the gate
piece and slide it into the gate groove
along the side of the PaulyWinder until it is
at the back of the groove. Squeeze the
second gate piece and slide it the gate
piece so it is at the front of the groove.

Lacing the Bobbin
Remove the orifice bar and
place a bobbin on your flyer.
Place the orifice bar on, and
attach a leader thread to your
bobbin. Lace the bobbin by
allowing the leader thread to
fall below the bobbin. Take the
leader thread under the curve
of the PaulyWinder on the
right to the outside of the
PaulyWinder. Then take the
thread and place it on the
fulcrum pin. Then lace the
thread thru the loop or hook of
your PaulyWinder. Then lace
the thread thru your orifice. See photo below for reference.
Spin and Adjust Tension
Spin under a yard of yarn in a clockwise direction and adjust your tension as needed for
the uptake you prefer. Before continuing, set the starting point below.
Set the Starting Point
Now that you have yarn on the PaulyWinder, you can adjust the
starting point. You will notice there are angle marks along the outside
of the PaulyWinder. Always start a new bobbin with your yarn down
the center (90 degree angle) of the PaulyWinder from the fulcrum
point. If your yarn is in front of the 90 degree angle, tighten the black
screw to push the fulcrum pin backwards so the center of your yarn
runs along that center line. This will help the PaulyWinder fill your
entire bobbin from front to back.

If you notice your bobbin is not filling along the back, tighten the black screw using ¼
turns clockwise until you see the PaulyWinder fill the back the next time it wanders to
the back of the bobbin.
It is completely normal for the PaulyWinder to wander as it fills the bobbin. It may
wander in the middle, the front, or the back, and wander around filling in valleys and
creating small mountains wandering front to back as your bobbin fills. Each bobbin you
spin will fill in a slightly different way than the bobbin before. Each bobbin is it’s own
journey. This is how the PaulyWinder is designed to work.
Plying using the PaulyWinder
To ply using the PaulyWinder, lace the flyer exactly the same way you would lace to
spin and treadle in a clockwise direction. It is recommended to have extra tension when
plying so that the yarn does not become slack and fly off the fulcrum peg when plying.
