Head
The drive band drives the flyer head on
the middle golden whorl. The other
whorls are only used by the Monarch for
ratios. There is no need to change your
drive band position on the Firefly because
there are no ratios on the Firefly.
Base
The Firefly Base is a baltic birch box with
4 rubber feet for stability, a control
panel, a 12 volt battery, an electric motor
as well as the following controls:
Direction: The direction control switch is on
the far left. It has three settings. The top
position is for spinning in a clockwise
direction, for a Z twist. The middle is off,
and is used to stop the spinning if the foot
switch is not in use. The bottom position is
for plying in a counter-clockwise direction,
for an S twist.
Speed: Turn this knob up to increase speed
for spinning finer / short staple length
fibers. Turn it down to decrease speed for
spinning bulky or textured yarns.
Power Jack: The power plug is used to
charge or supplement the Battery and/or
power the wheel when the battery is low.
The auto plug (12 volt) can also charge or
supplement the Battery.
ON/OFF Switch: The white power switch on
the far right should be set to off when the
Firefly is not is use.
Changing Flyer Heads
The head flyer is attached to the base by
a black knob. To remove the head flyer,
turn the knob counter-clockwise and
take the drive band off the silver motor.
Pull the head straight up by the handle.
Changing Bobbins
The Bobbins slide onto the flyer shaft
and seat on the hex nut on the back of
the shaft with a magnet. Changing the
bobbin will not change the tension,
however greater take-up may be needed
to remain effective when the bobbin
becomes full.
Charging the Battery
Plug the charger into the jack on the
front of the base, and into an outlet. The
light on the plug will turn green when
fully charged.
Using the Foot Switch
Plug the flat, silver foot switch cord into
the jack. The direction control switch
needs to be in the Spin or Ply position to
use the foot pedal and the Power Switch
needs to be set to On. Press the foot
pedal to start the flyer spinning, and
release it to stop the flyer. For art yarns,
the foot pedal is recommended as you
may need to stop & start frequently for
embellishments or sculpting texture.
MODULAR SERIES: The flyer heads for the
Firefly also fit the Monarch.
Changing Tension
Turn the knob towards you to increase
the pull, and away from you to decrease
the pull.
Resetting the Fuse
Power Issues? Press the red button on the
back of the Firefly to reset the fuse. If you
still have power issues, plug in your Firefly
to make sure it is charged and contact your
dealer.
