Tamper Warning
Sun Mountain pellet stoves have a manufacturer-set minimum and maximum burn
rate that must not be altered.
It is against federal regulations to alter this setting or otherwise operate
this wood heater in a manner inconsistent with operating instructions in
this manual.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Burning wood naturally produces smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
Make sure all stove gaskets and chimney joints are in good working order and seal-
ing properly to ensure unintended exposure.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas when exposed to elevated concentrations for
extended periods of time. Always use both smoke and carbon monoxide monitors
in areas having the potential to generate carbon monoxide.
A working smoke detector must be installed in the same room as this product.
Install a smoke detector on each floor of your home; incase of accidental fire from
any cause it can provide time for escape.
The smoke detector must be installed at least 15 feet (4,57 M) from the appliance
in order to prevent undue triggering of the detector when reloading.

Using the Stove
It is highly recommended that the initial burn of your new stove be done
outdoors. The paint used to coat your stove a high temperature paint that is dry
upon arrival but has a final cure that happens during the initial burn. This cure will
last 20-30 minutes and will produce fumes and some smoke.
Important Safety Instructions
This wood heater needs periodic inspection and repair for proper operation. Consult
the owner’s manual for further information. It is against federal regulations to oper-
ate this wood heater in a manner inconsistent with the operating instructions in the
owner’s manual.
The temperatures of surfaces on your stove can get extremely hot during oper-
ation. It is essential to monitor foot traffic around the stove to prevent burns and
protect the overall safety of lives and property.
Always read and follow these instructions for safe use and maintenance of your
stove, and heed the following important safety warnings:
lSurfaces of the stove get EXTREMELY HOT!
lKEEP CHILDREN, PETS, CLOTHING AND FURNITURE AWAY. CONTACT MAY
CAUSE SKIN BURNS.
lBe aware that surfaces may still be hot for an extended period of time after
the stove has been shut down.
lEducate your family before beginning operation of your new stove.
lPeriodic cleaning and maintenance is required. Failure to clean and maintain
your stove and chimney may result in poor performance.
lALWAYS allow the stove to cool completely before performing any main-
tenance.
lNEVER leave young children or pets unattended around the stove when in
use.
lNEVER block free airflow through the open vents of the stove.
lNEVER place foreign objects in the hopper.
lNEVER use gasoline, gasoline type lantern fuel, kerosene, charcoal lighter
fluid, or similar liquids to start up or freshen up a fire in this stove. Keep all
such liquids well away from the stove while in use.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 5 -

lNEVER place flammable items on or near the stove.
lNEVER block the fresh air intake ports – this will seriously affect the per-
formance of the stove.
Use The Correct Fuel
The stove burns pelletized wood fuel only. Burning fuels other than wood pelletized
fuel is not permitted.
Pellets ¼” (6.35 mm) diameter and approximately 1” (25.4) long should be used.
We strongly recommend using premium Douglas Fir pellets or premium soft wood
pellets that contain .5% or less moisture content. Note that pellet quality and per-
formance may vary from brand to brand. Therefore, it is recommended to not buy
pellet fuel in bulk until experience has revealed the best pellet fuel available in your
area.
lDO NOT try to burn wet pellets or pellets that were previously opened and
have been stored in the elements. Pellets that are stored in the elements are
prone to absorbing moisture resulting in poor performance from the stove.
Storing opened pellets indoors or in an air tight container is recommended.
lStore pellet fuel in a dry area.
lStove performance not only depends on the quality of the pipe installation but
also on the quality of the pellet fuel introduced to the stove. Avoid the use of
pellets with excess fines, binders or high ash content. ONLY USE PREMIUM
GRADE PELLETS WITH A MOISTURE CONTENT OF .5% OR LESS. THE
MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE PELLETS WILL AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF
THE STOVE.
lDO NOT BURN GARBAGE OR FLAMMABLE FLUIDS SUCH AS GASOLINE,
NAPHTHA, ENGINE OIL OR ANY OTHER SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS.
DO NOT STORE PELLET FUEL WITHIN SPACE HEATER INSTALLATION
CLEARANCES OR WITHIN THE SPACE REQUIRED FOR CHARGING AND
ASH REMOVAL.
This appliance should only burn pellets graded as standard through an EPA-author-
ized graded fuel program such as the PFI (Pellet Fuels Institute) Standards Program
after May 16, 2020.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
WE RECOMMEND ALL SUN MOUNTAIN STOVES BE CONNECTED TO OUTSIDE AIR.
Check local building codes for compliance.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves

Starting the Stove
DO NOT USE CHEMICALS OR FLUIDS TO START THE FIRE.
Use a hand-held propane torch to ignite your stove. A high quality torch with a
squeeze trigger ignition system works best.
Before starting the stove, inspect the primary burn chamber, secondary burn plate
unit and ashtray for soot build up and cleanliness. Perform any maintenance
required.

Close the Draft Slide
Close the Draft Slide vent on the bottom tube before lighting the stove.
Fill the Hopper With Wood Pellets
FULLY CLOSE THE SLIDE GATE ON BOTTOM OF HOPPER BEFORE FILLING
IT WITH WOOD PELLETS.
This prevents the wood pellets from dropping into the burn chamber until the stove
is ready.
Ensure that the "Closed" mark on the slide is visible - this indicates that the slide is
fully closed. Note that it may be necessary to "tap" the slide to get it fully closed.
The slide has a sharp front edge that can cut through wood pellets that are in the
way of it closing. Use a wooden handle or other blunt instrument to tap on the slide
gate to cut through any wood pellets that are preventing the slide from closing
fully.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 8 -

To avoid damaging the slide, always tap the slide straight in. Tapping it from
above or from below may bend the slide out of shape, which could prevent it from
working properly.
Once filled, close the Hopper lid.
Note that wood pellets may be added to Hopper while the stove is in operation.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 9 -

Pre Heat the Stove
Before lighting the wood pellets, pre-heat the stove, to start an upward air draft.
THIS STEP IS CRITICAL FOR A CLEAN START-UP.
1. Fully close the Draft Slide on the bottom tube.
2. Unlatch and open the Service Door to access the burn chamber for lighting.
3. Insert the lit torch into the upper burn chamber tray, and aim the flame
towards the Grates at the top rear of the tray).
4. Hold the flame on the Grates at the top rear of the tray for about 2 minutes.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 10 -

Open the Slide Gate
Slide the Slide Gate at the bottom of the Hopper OUT to allow the pellets to drop
from the Hopper onto the Grates.
Ensure that the "Open" line on the Slide Gate is visible - this indicates that the slide
is fully opened.
NEVER TRY TO REGULATE THESTOVE WITH THEPELLET SLIDE GATE.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 11 -

Ignite the Wood Pellets
Keep aiming the flame at the Grates (primary burn basket) at the top rear of the
tray for another minute or two to ignite the pellets.
Close the Service Door
After a visual inspection by opening the Draft Slide briefly to verify the pellets are
burning, close the Service Door and latch it shut.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 12 -

DANGER! When in operation, the surfaces of this stove get
extremely hot. To avoid burns, never touch any surface of the
stove when it is running, or for at least two hours after it has
been shut off.
Adjusting the Temperature
Once the temperature gauge indicates 400°, the temperature can be controlled via
the Draft Slide on the bottom tube:
lOpen the Draft Slide to decrease the temperature
lClose the Draft Slide to increase the temperature
Shutting Down the Stove
1. Close the Draft Slide.
2. Push the Hopper Slide to the Closed position. This will stop the pellets from
dropping into the stove.
Ensure that the "Closed" mark on the slide is visible - this indicates that the
slide is fully closed. Note that it may be necessary to "tap" the slide to get it
fully closed.
The slide has a sharp front edge that can cut through wood pellets that are in
the way of it closing. Use a wooden handle or other blunt instrument to tap on
the slide gate to cut through any wood pellets that are preventing the slide
from closing fully.
To avoid damaging the slide, always tap the slide straight in. Tapping it from
above or from below may bend the slide out of shape, which could prevent it from
working properly.
NOTE: The stove will continue to run for approximately one hour after the Hopper
Slide has been closed.

DANGER! When in operation, the surfaces of this stove get
extremely hot. To avoid burns, never touch any surface of the
stove when it is running, or for at least two hours after it has
been shut off.
Emptying the Ashtray
Always empty the ashtray before use, and only after the stove has had several
hours to cool since the last use.
1. Open the Service Door.
2. Slide the lower tray out, and safely dispose the
ashes.
3. Slide the tray back into position.
4. Close the service door.
Letting the ashtray fill up with ashes can choke the stove causing a decrease in tem-
perature and increase the possibility of smouldering fuel and smoke.
Disposal of Ashes
Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight fitting lid. The closed con-
tainer of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor or on the ground, well
away from all combustible materials, pending final disposal. If the ashes are dis-
posed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should be retained in
the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves

Clearing the Secondary Burn Plate
CLEARING YOUR SECONDARY CHAMBER IS REQUIRED WHILE BURNING
HARDWOOD PELLETS.
To empty the Ashtray:
Surfaces will be hot.
1. Remove the Ashtray, dispose of any ashes, and reinstall Ashtray.
2. Inspect the Secondary Burn Chamber:
Any layers of ash should be removed and discarded:
Lightly tap the Secondary Burn Chamber on the edge of your disposal con-
tainer to clear any clogged hole(s) in the burn plate. This will resume proper
air flow through the burn plate; reinstall the Secondary Burn Chamber.
Experience will determine how often you need to clear the Secondary Burn
Chamber and Ashtray while the stove is in operation.
Until you have establish a regular routine, do not leave the stove unattended
for long periods of time.
Clearing the Heat Exchanger
It is normal for ash to collect in the Heat Exchanger. Look for ash build up in the
heat exchanger by moving the draft slide to the all the way open position. Exper-
ience will determine how often the heat exchanger needs to be cleared of ash build
up. A shop vacuum works well for heat exchanger ash removal.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TOCLEARTHEHEATEXCHANGER WHILE THE STOVE IS IN
OPERATION.
Failure to keep a clean burn chamber or secondary burn plate can result in poor
stove performance.
Letting ash build up into the primary burn basket can cause choking of the stove
and increase the risk of smoldering fuel and or smoke spillage.
Owner's Guide - Sun Mountain Stoves
- 15 -

Notes on Running the Stove
If smoke becomes present during ignition, it is likely due to the pellets starting to
burn before the draft is established. You will need to establish a better draft before
proceeding to lightening the pellets. In this case, reposition the torch head so the
flame is burning across the bottom of the burn basket not directly on it.
lWE RECOMEND ALL SUN MOUNTAIN STOVES BE CONECTED TO OUTSIDE
AIR. Check local building codes for compliance.
lKeep foreign debris out of the hopper.
lVacuStack™ chimney caps are recommended when experiencing high wind
issues or fluctuating temperatures or low heat output. These chimney caps
are designed to increase draft on any chimney by causing a vacuum effect
through the flue below when the air moves past the cap.
In Case of Temperature Drop
If you experience a temperature drop after several hours of operation:
1. Dump the ashtray and dispose of ashes.
2. Clear the secondary burn plate.
If this does not bring the temperature back up, then it may be necessary to clear a
Pellet Jam in the vertical pellet feed tube beneath the Hopper.
Clearing a Pellet Jam
In some cases, the vertical pellet feed tube beneath the Hopper can get jammed
with wood pellets.
1. Fully close the Slide Gate on the bottom of the Hopper, and run the stove on
high for approximately 35 minutes.
