Installation Instructions 12 SK-NET TR/PCI (+) (SK-459x) Token Ring PCI NIC
CHAPTER 1. GENERAL
INFORMATION
FEATURES
The SysKonnect Token Ring SK-NET TR/PCI (SK-4591) / SK-NET TR/PCI + (SK-4590)
adapter is designed for IEEE802.5- and IBM-compatible Token Ring networks operating at 4
or 16 Mbit/s. Source routing and early token release are supported. The adapter can be used in
100-Ohm UTP, SUTP and STP cabling with RJ-45 plug systems, and in 150-Ohm IBM type
1,2 and 6 cabling with SubMin D9 plug systems.
The adapter complies fully with the PCI bus specification. In conjunction with the busmaster
capability this enables you to take full advantage of the benefits provided by the 32-bit bus and
the high data rate, in particular high data throughput when processor utilization is low. The
advantages of this are especially apparent in video, CAD, DTP and multimedia applications.
In systems without busmaster capability, programmed I/O mode is also possible.
Thanks to the Plug and Play technology, the adapter is particularly easy to install. There are
no DIP switches or jumpers that need to be configured. Three LEDs constantly indicate the
operating status of the adapter. Errors in network operation are easier to localize.
Broad support of operating systems (Novell NetWare, MS Windows NT, MS Windows 95,
IBM LAN Server) and multiprotocol capability (UPPS) are included in the adapter kit. The
SK-NET TR/PCI + (SK-4590) adapter also supports remote booting. An integrated flash
memory permits simple programming of the remote boot software in the system. Remote Boot

Chapter 1. General Information
Code for IPX (Novell NetWare) and RPL (IBM LAN Server, MS Windows NT 3.51) is also
supplied.
This chapter contains information you need to know before installing the adapter.
Note: Information on any last-minute changes is provided in the enclosed Release Notes.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The adapter operates according to the busmaster principle.
The computer must be equipped with an Intel 80486 or PENTIUM (or compatible)
microprocessor and at least one free PCI slot with busmaster capability. When demands are
not high, the adapter can also be operated in programmed I/O mode (exception: Novell Server
driver).
THE ADAPTER KIT
The adapter kit contains:
• The adapter
• A paper envelope with
• Installation Diskette 1 (README Viewer program, NetWare Server driver,
diagnostics program and OS/2 Requester, Remote Boot etc.), 3.5"
• Installation Diskette 2 (multiprotocol software UPPS, drivers and manual), 3.5"
• Release Notes (if applicable)

HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS
Caution:
Static electricity can damage or destroy the adapter.
➔Do not open the anti-static package containing the adapter until you are instructed to
do so.
➔Follow these handling instructions:
• Put the anti-static package containing the adapter onto a metal expansion slot cover for at
least 2 seconds. This action reduces any static electricity from the package and from your
body.
• Do not touch any exposed printed circuitry.
• Do not place the adapter on the computer cover or a metal table.
• Prevent other people from touching the adapter.
• Limit your movement, because your movement can cause a buildup of static electricity.
• Always handle the adapter carefully.
• If you put the adapter down after you have removed it from the package, place the adapter
on the anti-static package on a flat surface.
• We recommend you use anti-static wrist straps during installation. Connect them to the
computer chassis after you have removed the cover from the computer.
