ThelatestadditiontoTannoy’sextensivelineofcolumnloudspeakers,VLSSeriesintroducesanother
proprietaryTannoyinnovation:FAST™(FocussedAsymmetricalShapingTechnology).Bycombining
transducertechnologyfromtheacclaimedQFlexSerieswithaninnovativenewpassivecrossoverdesign,
FASTprovidesexceptionalacousticalbenets,includinganasymmetricalverticaldispersionpatternwhich
gentlyshapesacousticalcoveragetowardthelowerquadrantoftheverticalaxis.
TheVLSSeriescomprisesthreemodels.TheVLS7(7×3.5”LF)isdesignedforspeech-onlyapplications
whileVLS15(7×3.5”LFwith8×1”HF)andVLS30(14×3.5”LFand16×1”HF)aredesignedformore
demandingfull-rangemusicapplicationsaswellasspeech.AllareIP65ratedfordustandwateringress,are
resistanttosaltsprayandUV,andhavebeensubjectedtorigouroushigh/lowoperationaltemperatureand
humiditytesting.TheVLS7and15areEN54certiedforuseinredetectionandrealarmsystems.The
loudspeakersaresuitableforbothindoorapplications(houseofworship,retailmalls,auditoria)aswellas
coveredoutdooruse(transporthubs,concourses).Easymountingisfacilitatedviasuppliedwallandying
brackets,withanoptionalpan-tiltbracketavailable.
AidedbyanadditionofanexclusiveTannoyeditionofEASEFocusv2.0software,consultantscan
designsystemswithpredictableresultsandalsospecifyVLSSeriesinconjunctionwithTannoy’sexisting
columnloudspeakers–includingISeriesandQFlex–withinthefamiliarenvironsofanindustrystandard
softwarewizard.
VLSSeriesloudspeakerscaneasilybeswitchedfromlow-impedancemode(6ohmsforVLS30,12ohmsfor
VLS7andVLS15)to70/100Vdistributedlineoperation.Forquickandsimplecommissioning,thisselectionis
made(alongwiththetransformertappingoptions)viaasinglerotaryswitchlocatedonthereartermination.
Forapplicationsrequiringextendedlowfrequencyenhancement,arangeofTannoysub-basssystemsare
availableforuseinconjunctionwiththeVLSSeries.
3. Unpacking
EachTannoyVLSSeriesloudspeakeriscarefullytestedandinspectedpriortoshipment.Afterunpacking,
pleaseinspectforanyexteriorphysicaldamage,andsavethecartonandanyrelevantpackagingmaterials
incasetheloudspeakeragainrequirespackingandshipping.Intheeventthatdamagehasbeensustained
intransit,pleasenotifyyourdealerandtheshippingcarrierimmediately.

AllVLSSeriesmodelscanbeoperatedaseitheralow-impedanceloudspeakerorwithina70/100Vdistributed
system.Theoperationmodeisselectableviaasingleswitchlocatedontherearofthecabinet.
Low-impedancemodeisrecommendedifthecablerunsarerelativelyshortandthenumberofspeakersis
small.If,ontheotherhand,thecablerunsarelongandmorethanafewloudspeakersarerequired,thena
distributedlinesystemisideal.
Whenoperatinginlow-impedancemode,theloudspeakerisabletodeliverawiderfrequencyanddynamic
range.However,ifthecablerunsareexcessivelylong,thenthesoundqualitymaybecompromiseddueto
theincreaseincableresistanceandtheresultingpowerlosses.Tokeeptheloadtotheampliermanageable,
itisalsorecommendedthatasmallnumberofspeakersbeused,thusavoidingcomplexseries/parallel
combinations.
Whenalargenumberofspeakersareinstalledoverlongcableruns,itisrecommendedthatadistributed
(70/100V)systembeused.Fordistributedline,thecableneednothaveaslargeacrosssectionalareaas
forlow-impedance,resultinginsavingsincablecost.Allspeakersareplacedinparallelwiththeoutputofthe
amplier,allowingeasyinstallation.Thewattagetappingscanbeindividuallyadjusted,givingmoreexibility
withinaninstallation.

5.1 Connector type
EachVLSSeriesloudspeakerisequippedwithapairofinternallyparalleledbarrierstripterminalsforconnection
totheamplier(ortootherloudspeakersina70/100Vsystemorseries/parallelconguration).Barrierstrips
acceptwireupto4mmsqCSA(AWG12).Barrierstrippolarityisasindicated.
5.2 Low-impedance mode
Ifconnectingdirectlytotheamplierinlow-impedancemode,connectthepositive(+)conductortoapositive
(+)barrierstripterminalandthenegative(-)conductortoanegative(-)terminal.Severalloudspeakersmay
beconnectedtooneamplieroutputinparallel,series,orseries/parallelcongurationsusingtheother
internallyparalleledbarrierstripconnector.Pleaserefertofollowingsectiononseries/parallelconguration
beforeconnecting.
Whenchoosingcabletype,itisimportanttoselectthecorrectcrosssectionalareainrelationtothecable
lengthandtheloadimpedance.Asmallcrosssectionalareawillincreasethecable’sseriesresistance,inducing
powerlossandresponsevariations(dampingfactor).Connectorswiredwith2.5sq.mm(12AWG)cablewill
be
satisfactoryundernormalconditions;withverylongcableruns,thewiresizeshouldbeincreased.Please
refertothefollowingtableforguidance:

Amplier selection-Aswithallprofessionalloudspeakersystems,thepowerhandlingisafunctionofvoice
coilthermalcapacity.Careshouldbetakentoavoidoverdrivingtheamplierintoclipping.Damagetothe
loudspeakerwillbesustainediftheamplierisdrivenintoclippingforanyextendedperiodoftime.Headroom
ofatleast3dBshouldbeallowed.Whenevaluatinganamplier,itisimportanttotakeintoaccountits
behaviourunderlowimpedanceloadconditions.Aloudspeakersystemishighlyreactive,andwithtransient
signalsitcanrequiremorecurrentthanthenominalimpedancewouldindicate.Generallyahigherpower
amplierrunningfreeofdistortionwilldolessdamagetotheloudspeakerthanalowerpoweramplierthat

iscontinuallyclipping.Ahigh-poweredamplierrunningatlessthan90%ofoutputpowergenerallysounds
superiortoalowerpoweramplierrunningat100%.Anamplierwithinsufcientdrivecapabilitywillnot
allowthefullperformanceortheloudspeakertoberealised.(Seetechnicalspecicationssectionfor
recommendedamplierpower.)
Whenusingampliersfromdifferentmanufacturersinasingleinstallation,makecertainthatallampliershave
closelymatchedgains.(Variationshouldbelessthan+/-0.5dB.)Thisprecautionisimportanttotheoverall
systembalancewhenonlyasingleactivecrossoverisbeingusedwithmultiplecabinets.Whenpossible,itis
recommendedthatthesameampliersbeusedthroughout.
Series/parallel connections-Whenrunninglow-impedanceloudspeakersinparallel,caremustbe
takennottoallowtheimpedancetodroptoolow,asdamagemaybesustainedbytheamplier.Mostlow
impedanceamplierswillbeabletohandleloadsof2ohmsto8ohms.Thismeansforexamplethatwhen
usinganamplierwith2ohmloadrating,uptothreeVLS30orsixVLS7/15maybeconnectedinparallel
peroutput,althoughcareshouldbetakenasimpedancevarieswithfrequencyandatsomefrequenciesthe
impedancewilldroptobelow2ohms.
5.3 Constant voltage (70 /100 V) Mode
Inconstantvoltagedistributedsystems,normallyanumberofloudspeakersareconnectedinparalleltoasingle
amplieroutput.Connectthepositive(+)conductorfromtheamplierorpriorloudspeakerinthesystemtoa
positive(+)barrierstripterminalandthenegative(-)conductortoanegative(-)terminal.Theotherparallel
barrierstripisavailableforconnectingadditionalloudspeakers.
Amulti-positionrotaryswitchontherearinputpanelselectseitherthelow-impedanceoperatingmodeorthe
high-impedancemodes(70Vor100V)withavailabletransformertaps.WhenusingVLSSeriesloudspeakersin
distributedlinesystems,thetransformercanbetappedwithavailablepowerlevelsshowninthetablebelow:

Alltransformerprimariesshouldbeconnectedinparalleltotheoutputoftheamplier.Thesummedtotal
powerratinginwattsoftheselectedtapsettingsforallconnectedloudspeakersmustnotexceedthetotal
outputpowerratingoftheconnectedamplieroutputchannelinwatts.Itisrecommendedthatagenerous
powersafetymargin(minimum3dBheadroom)bemaintainedbetweenthetotalloudspeakerpower
requirementsandtheamplieroutputcapacitytoavoidcontinuousamplieroperationatfullratedoutput.
5.4 Wiring for EN54 and outdoor applications
ArightangledwatertightcableglandissuppliedwiththeVLS7and15foruseinoutdoorapplications(Fig.1).
TheVLS30hasaninputpanelcoverwithrubberwiringgrommetforuseinoutdoorapplications(Fig.2).
Beforemakingconnections,passthewire(s)throughthecablegrand/rubbergrommet.Theinputpanelcoveris
securedtothecabinetusingthefourscrewsalreadyinsertedaroundtheinput.

6. Polarity checking
Checkingthepolarityofthewiringbeforethespeakersystemismountedorownwillhelpensuresatisfactory
performance.Ifyoudonothaveapulse-basedpolaritychecker,youmaycheckLFunitsasfollows:Connect
twowirestothe+and-terminalsofaPP3(9V)battery.Applythewireconnectedtothepositive(+)terminal
ofthebatterytothespeakercablelegwhichyoubelievetobeconnectedthepositiveterminalofthespeaker
connector;likewiseconnectthenegative(-)terminalofthebatterytothenegativeterminalofthespeaker.If
youhavewireditcorrectly,theLFdriveunitwillmoveforward.Atthispoint,connectthepositive(+)speaker
leadtothe+terminalontheamplierandthenegative(-)leadtothe-terminalontheamplier.However,if
theLFdrivermovesbackwardswiththebatterytest,theinputconnectionsneedtobeinvertedbefore
connectingtheamplier.Ifproblemsareencountered,inspectthecablewiring.Notethatdifferentamplier
manufacturersmayutilisedifferentpincongurationsandpolarityconventions;ifyouareusingampliersfrom
morethanonemanufacturer,checkthepolarityattheampliersaswellasattheloudspeakers.

7. Equalisation
VLSSeriesloudspeakersrequirenoequalisationorcorrectiontoovercomesystemlimitations;equalisation
isnecessaryonlytocompensatefordifcultacousticenvironments.Over-equalisationcanreducesystem
headroomandintroducephasedistortion,resultingindegradedsound.Ifequalisationisrequired,itshould
beappliedgentlyandsmoothly.BecauseVLSSeriesloudspeakersarephasecoherentdesigns,excessive
equalizationusuallyprovesdetrimentaltotheoverallsoundquality.Whenoneloudspeakerisusedinclose
proximitytoanother,comblteringeffectscancreatecoverageproblems.(Comblteringcreatesanuneven
frequencyresponseacrossthecoverageareaduetoconstructiveanddestructiveinterferenceeffects
betweenthetwosources.)Comblteringcannotbecuredbyequalisation;thisshouldbeaddressed
withproperloudspeakerplacement.
8. Mounting and flying
8.1 Asymmetrical pattern considerations
VLSSeriesloudspeakersaredesignedwithanasymmetricalverticaldispersionpattern,afeaturewhichallows
improvedperformancewithsimpliedmountinginmanyapplications.TheverticaldispersionoftheVLS7and
VLS15is+6/-22degreesfromacousticcenteraxis,whilethepatternoftheVLS30is+3/-11degreesfrom
acousticcenteraxis.Pleasebeawareofthisfeaturewhenplanningyourinstallation.Inmanysituationswhere
conventionalcolumnloudspeakerswouldrequiresubstantialdownwardtilt,aVLSSeriesloudspeakerwould
requirelesstiltorevenallowushmounting,thusprovidingasimplerinstallationwithimprovedvisualaesthetics.

Wall Bracket–EachVLSSeriesloudspeakerissuppliedwithastandardwallbracketsuitableformount-
ingonmostwallsurfaces.ThebracketissuppliedastwointerlockingUplates.Oneplateattachestotherear
oftheloudspeakerwithfoursuppliedscrews.Theotherpartissecuredtothewall.Thebaronthebottomof
thespeakerplateslidesintothebottomnotchofthewallplate,whilethetopissecuredwiththetwosupplied
screws.ThebracketfortheVLS7and15isslottedtoallowananglebetween0and6degrees(Fig.3).Aligning
thetoptwoscrewholesoftheVLS30resultsinaatushmount;usingthelowertwoscrewpositionsprovides
a4degreedownwardtilt.(Fig.4)

Flying Bracket–EachVLSSeriesloudspeakerisalsosuppliedwithayingbracket.Thebracketisattached
tothetoptwoinsertsusingthesuppliedM6screws(Fig.5).Thetwobottominsertscanbeusedaspullback
ifrequired.

Pan-Tilt Bracket (optional) –Apan-tiltbracketisavailablewhichallowspanningandtiltingforexible
orientationalongbothhorizontalandverticalaxes.Detailedinstallationinstructionsareincludedwiththe
pan-tiltbracket.
8.3 Rigging and safety procedures
WARNING:Asthelegalrequirementsformounting,suspending,hanging,yingorriggingequipmentchange
fromcountrytocountry,pleaseconsultyourlocalsafetystandardsofcebeforeinstallinganyproduct.Wealso
recommendthatyouthoroughlycheckanylawsandbylawspriortoinstallation.
TheinstallationofTannoyloudspeakersusingthededicatedhardwareshouldcarriedoutonlybyfullyqualied
installersinaccordancewithalltherequiredsafetycodesandstandardsthatareappliedattheplaceof
installation.
TheTannoyprofessionalhardwarecoveredinthisguidehasbeendesignedtoofferquick,simple,costeffective
andsecuresolutionsformountingspecicTannoyprofessionalloudspeakers.Thishardwarehasbeendesigned
andmanufacturedwithahighsafetyloadfactorforitsspecicrole.
Toensurethesafestpossibleuseofthehardwarecoveredinthisguide,itmustbeassembledinstrict
accordancewiththeinstructionsspecied.TheinformationintheseOperationManualsrelatingtothe
assemblyandthesafeuseoftheseaccessoriesmustbeunderstoodandfollowed.
TannoyprofessionalhardwarehasbeendesignedforusewithspecicTannoyprofessionalloudspeakers,and
isnotdesignedorintendedforusewithanyotherTannoyprofessionalproducts,oranyotherdevices.Using
Tannoyprofessionalhardwareforanypurposeotherthanthatindicatedinthisguideisconsideredtobe
improperuse.Suchusecanbeverydangerous:overloading,modifying,damaging,orassemblinginamanner
otherthanthatclearlystatedintheoperationwillcompromisesafety.ThecomponentpartsofanyTannoy
professionalhardwaredevicemustonlybeassembledusingtheaccessorykitssuppliedandinstrict
compliancewiththeOperationManual.Theuseofotheraccessoriesornon-approvedmethodsofassembly
mayresultinanunsafehardwaresystembyreducingtheloadsafetyfactor.
Welding,oranyothermethodofpermanentlyxinghardwarecomponentstogetherortotheintegralxing
pointsinthecabinet,shouldneverbeused.
WheneveraTannoyprofessionalloudspeakerisxedtoasurfaceusingaTannoyprofessionalhardwaredevice,
theinstallermustensurethatthesurfaceiscapableofsafelyandsecurelysupportingtheload.Thehardware
employedmustbesafelyandsecurelyattachedbothtotheloudspeakerandalsotothesurfaceinquestion,
inaccordancewiththeOperationManual,usingonlythexingholesprovidedasstandardandcoveredinthe
manual.Securexingstothebuildingstructurearevital.Seekhelpfromarchitects,structuralengineersorother
specialistsifinanydoubt.
Allloudspeakersownintheatres,nightclubs,conferencecentresorotherplacesofworkandentertainment
mustbeprovidedwithanindependent,correctlyratedandsecurelyattachedsecondarysafetyrestraintin
additiontotheprincipalhardwaredevice.Thissecondarysafetyrestraintmustpreventtheloudspeakerfrom
droppingmorethan150mm(6”)shouldtheprincipalhardwaredevicefail.

saltsprayandUVexposure,makingthemsuitableforuseinmostoutdoorapplications.Pleaseconsultwith
