1. INTRODUCTION
The A-BUS audio system is to be combined with your
source equipment (receiver, CD player, etc.) and
speakers. These instructions provide overview,
compatibility, installation, and setup procedures.
2. SYSTEM OVERVIEW
2.1. Distribution Hub (1479534-1)
The distribution hub is the core of the A-BUS system.
It may be mounted on the Universal Equipment Panel
in either the RCS14 or RCS36 Media Convergence
Center (MCC).
The audio sources (audio receiver, etc) are normally
located in the main entertainment area. A Cat 5 cable
should be run from the entertainment area and
terminated to a connectivity panel located in the MCC.
Patch the source input (Cat 5e Patch Cable 219246-1
is recommended) to the input of the A-BUS hub.
The hub has four output ports (RJ45) to connect up to
four runs of Cat 5 cable that lead to a Power Module
located in each room. If sound is required in more
rooms, additional hubs can be installed into the MCC.
A Cat 5 patch cable is required from the first hub
expansion output to the next hub input. Each
distribution hub is supplied with its own Power Supply.
Substitute power supplies are not recommended.
2.2. Power Module (1479392-1)
The power modules are stereo amplifiers with level
control (which power the speakers in each room). Only
one Cat 5 cable is required between the distribution
hub and the power module. This cable should be
terminated to a connectivity panel in the MCC.
Connect Cat 5 patch cables between connectivity
panel and A-BUS hub outputs. Speaker cable is run
from the power module to the speakers in that room.
2.3. Infrared (IR) Repeating Module (1479393-1)
This is a power module with an infrared repeater that
enables remote control commands to be relayed to the
source components (input, track/channel selection,
etc). The status LED flashes green when IR
commands are received. The IR repeater system is
always active.
2.4. Audio, IR Data, and Status Connections
A. A-BUS/Ready
These amplifiers are equipped with output(s) (RJ-45)
to connect directly to a hub. These amplifiers also
have IR data outputs to relay commands to other
source components.
B. Interface Module (1479395-1)
If the amplifier is not equipped with an A-BUS/Ready
output, an interface module should be located near the
main audio components to connect and distribute line-
level audio output from the amplifiers tape output or
second zone output, along with IR data and trigger
system status (see Paragraph 2.5).
2.5. Power/Status
The power modules are on standby unless
activated by:
1. A-BUS/Ready amplifiers that automatically
activate the system when it is powered up (from
standby mode).
2. Automatic signal sensing - the interface module
activates the system when an audio signal is
sensed (30 seconds after the audio signal ceases,
the system returns to standby). In this format, the
red status LED indicates when the system is
activated.
3. System power sensing: To activate the system
when the main amplifier is powered up, a 12-Volt,
100-300 mA power pack should be plugged into the
main amplifiers switched power outlet and the
status input of the interface module. In this format,
the automatic signal sensing is defeated and the red
status LED will indicate when the system and main
amplifier are active.
3. LOCAL INPUT MODULE (LIM) (1479396-1)
The LIM provides “local” input capability to a power
module from sources such as TV, MP3 player,
computer sound cards, etc. The LIM automatically
switches to the local input when a local source is
detected. Thirty seconds after the localsource ceases,
the LIM automatically reverts to the main input source.
During pre-wire, the Cat 5 cable from the MCC should
be looped past the LIM mounting location and then to
the Power Module.
4. PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY
This product complies with the A-BUS format. The A-
BUS format has also been adopted by other
manufacturers who make a variety of products which
can give your system added flexibility and simplify
operation. When looking to expand or upgrade your
home entertainment and distributed audio system,. be
sure to look for products that carry the A-BUS
trademark.

5. PRODUCT INSTALLATION
Pre-Wiring: All cabling between the ready amplifier/
interface module and the distribution hub should be
Cat 5 cable or better (eg. Cat 5ecable). The maximum
cable run should be 30 m [150 feet]. Speaker wire
should be run from the power module to the in-wall or
in-ceiling speakers. The power modules will accept up
to 14 AWG cable. It is also recommended to run Cat 5
cable from the power modules to the speaker points
for future requirements. It is recommended that the
Cat 5 cable run to the main sound system be
terminated to a Cat 5 outlet jack and a standard 568A
patch lead be installed between the outlet jack and the
ready/interface module output.
Recommend the Cat 5 cable from the MCC to the
Power Module be looped past the LIM mounting
location. This will allow a LIM to be easily added at
a later time.
During installation, do not connect power to the
hub(s). Before powering up the system, make sure
all volume levels are on minimum level. Power
modules should be connected and left out of the
wall for adjustment. Do not install the power
modules into the walls before starting up the
system.
6. SETUP
Follow these steps to give the volume control
maximum flexibility. On the back of the power modules
are trim pots (L and R), that fine-tune the output level
in each room to compensatefor the length of the cable
run, the efficiency of the speaker, or the size of the
room.
There are also situations where the output level
should be limited. The main volume control of the
system should be set to about 2 o'clock. The trim pots
should then be adjusted to a point, just below the
amplifiers clipping point, using a popular music
source. (Clipping is the point where the sound starts to
distort).
Using the included hardware, install the power module
into a standard UL/CSA approved electrical J-box.
7. FAULT FINDING
•Check all connections carefully.
•Make sure all speakers are wired in phase.
•Check for status (red LED indicator on power
module).
•Disconnect power modules from hub and check
operation - one by one.
•A short in the speaker line will cause the output to
shutdown until fixed.
•Some second zone outputs have their own power
command.
8. REVISION SUMMARY
Since the previous version of this document, the
following changes were made:
•Updated document to corporate requirements.
