Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Device Side Data FC5025 USB 5.25" floppy
controller. The FC5025 connects a 5.25" floppy drive to your computer’s
USB port, allowing you to read a wide variety of disks. This document
explains how to install and use your FC5025.
Installing the FC5025
Static electricity can damage computer equipment; to prevent this, wear a
grounded wrist strap while installing your FC5025.
Plug the included floppy cable and USB cable into the FC5025’s connectors.
The red stripe on the floppy cable should be on the side nearest the USB
connector.
The FC5025 is designed to install in a hard disk bay. The top side of the
board is the side with the connectors, and the brackets are on the bottom
side. Hold the board in place with one of the brackets aligned to a
hard disk mounting hole and partially screw in the mounting screw, then
repeat for the other bracket. Hold the board horizontal and tighten the
screws to fasten the board firmly in place.
Plug the free end of the USB cable into an internal USB port. If your
computer does not have any internal USB ports, you may add one with a
PCI add−on card. Also, your motherboard may have USB pin headers which
can be converted into a USB receptacle with the right cable.
The recommended drive is the TEAC FD−55GFR. If using a different model
of drive, please choose a 1200k drive. The included software expects a
1200k drive even when reading 360k disks, and will not work with a 360k drive.
Connect any of the unused connectors on the floppy cable to the floppy drive.
Each FC5025 can control only one drive. Before installing the floppy drive,
jumper it according to the settings on the next page. Also connect power to
the floppy drive.
Notice regarding Radio Frequency Interference
The FC5025 is a subassembly, as defined in 47 CFR Section 15.101(e). It is
intended to be installed within an FCC compliant computer or similar enclosure.
As the system integrator, you are responsible for installing the FC5025 in a
manner that does not interfere with TV and radio reception.

Jumper settings for TEAC FD−55GFR−7149, FD−55GFR−7193 and FD−55GFR−7220
Setting Description
D1 closed, DRIVE SELECT 1
D0,D2,D3 open
U0, U1 open DRIVE SELECT turns on front panel LED
IU open No IN USE input
DC closed, Pin 34 is DISK CHANGE output
RY open
LG open MODE SELECT polarity is normal
I open Single speed mode (360 RPM)
E2 closed Index pulses continue during seek
Jumper settings for TEAC FD−55GFR−149U
Setting Description
D1 closed, DRIVE SELECT 1
D0,D2,D3 open
U0, U1 open DRIVE SELECT turns on front panel LED
IU open No IN USE input
DC closed, Pin 34 is DISK CHANGE output
RY open
LG open MODE SELECT polarity is normal
IS open READY state reset after speed change
I open Single speed mode (360 RPM)
E2 closed Index pulses continue during seek
Note: Jumper E2 is difficult to find on this drive. It is between the power
connector and a row of 4 resistors. The text "E2" is hard to see because it
is underneath one of the resistors. E2 closed is the preferred setting, but
the drive will still work with E2 open.
Jumper settings for other drives
If using a different model of drive, make the equivalent jumper settings
according to the above descriptions and your drive’s documentation.

Installing the included software − Linux
To compile the Linux software, you must have gcc, make, binutils and
libusb 0.1.12 installed. Extract the source code from the Source_Code
directory of the included CD−ROM, cd to the backend directory and
run make, then cd to the cmd directory and run make.
To compile the GUI, you will also need GTK 1.2 or later. If you have GTK 1.2,
cd to xdib and run make. If you have GTK 2.x, cd to xdib and run
"make −f Makefile.gtk2".
To allow users in group floppy to access the FC5025, copy 025_fc5025.rules
to /etc/udev/rules.d/ and reboot.
Installing the included software − Mac OS X
To install MacDIB, navigate to the Drivers folder on the included CD−ROM,
open FC5025_MacOSX_Setup.dmg, and drag MacDIB to the Applications folder.
Optionally, you may also install the command line tools. You only need to do
this if you want to read disks from the Terminal window. To install the
command line tools, double−click FC5025 Command Line Tools (optional).pkg.
If you are running Tiger, add the following two lines to your .profile:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
export MANPATH=‘manpath‘:/usr/local/man
Installing the included software − Windows − See the next page

Installing the included software − Windows 98SE
If you boot your computer with the FC5025 connected before installing the
drivers, the Add New Hardware Wizard will appear. If this happens, cancel
the wizard.
To install the drivers, navigate to the Drivers folder on the included CD−ROM
and double−click FC5025_Windows_Setup.
After installing the drivers, reboot your computer with the FC5025 connected.
The Add New Hardware Wizard will appear. On the first screen, select
"search for the best driver". Next, check off "specify a location" and
uncheck all the other locations such as floppy and CD−ROM drive. In the
box under "specify a location", enter C:\Program Files\FC5025 and click Next.
Installing the included software − Windows XP
If you boot your computer with the FC5025 connected before installing the
drivers, the Found New Hardware Wizard will appear. If this happens, cancel
the wizard.
To install the drivers, navigate to the Drivers folder on the included CD−ROM
and double−click FC5025_Windows_Setup.
After installing the drivers, reboot your computer with the FC5025 connected.
The Found New Hardware Wizard will appear and ask to connect to Windows Update.
Select "No, not this time" and click Next. On the next screen, select
"Install the software automatically" and click Next. Installation will
then complete.
Installing the included software − Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit)
When you first start your computer with the FC5025 connected, a
message will appear in the lower−right corner of the screen stating
that "device driver software was not successfully installed". Ignore
this message.
To install the drivers, navigate to the Drivers folder on the included CD−ROM
and double−click FC5025_Windows_Setup. While installing, Windows will ask you
twice whether to allow the installer to modify the system (once when you first
run the installer, and once when it is almost done). Answer yes both times.
Once the driver installation is complete, you can run the Disk Image and Browse
program and start using your FC5025 immediately without rebooting.
Installing the included software − Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit)
To install the drivers, navigate to the Drivers folder on the included CD−ROM
and double−click FC5025_Windows_Setup. Windows will ask you whether to allow
the installer to modify the system. Answer yes.

To start the Disk Image and Browse tool under Linux, execute xdib;
on Mac OS X, open the Applications folder and double−click MacDIB;
under Windows, open the USB Floppy program group in the Start Menu and
click on Disk Image and Browse.
If you have more than one FC5025 connected, you may select which one you
want to use. Select the type of disk you want to read. You can then either
click Browse to copy individual files from the disk (for some formats only),
or enter a directory and filename and click Image to make an image copy of
the entire disk.
Using the command line tools
The command line tools are fcbrowse, fcdrives, fcformats and fcimage.
From the Linux shell or the Mac OS X terminal window, you can read the
manual pages for these commands using the man command. Under 32−bit Windows,
these commands are documented in C:\Program Files\FC5025\cmd.pdf and on
64−bit Windows the documentation is in C:\Program Files (x86)\FC5025\cmd.pdf .
