The Ceramic Bowl cannot withstand sudden temperature changes,
such as immersion into cold water as this can cause the bowl to crack
or to brake.
Guide to slow cooking
it’s a gentle method of cooking retaining both the flavour and the nutrients in food.
It allows cheaper cuts of meat to be selected which will become tender and
succulent.
More delicate foods such as fish, fruit and vegetables won’t break up during
cooking.
As the temperature is low, very little sticking occurs and very little stirring is
required.
Select the temperature setting that you require :
❑HIGH : Your Slow Cooker will cook on HIGH until desired temperature is
reached and then maintain a constant temperature. A dish will take
about 3-4 hours to cook on high position.
❑LOW : To cook gradually throughout the day or overnight. It will cook in
5-7 hours on LOW position.
❑WARM : To keep food warm
HIGH-pre-cooking
Pre-browning must always be carried out in a saucepan or frying pan.
Browning meat and vegetables first gives improved results in terms of flavour and
appearance, sauces will become thicker.
Cooking time will be shorter than with the no-pre-cooking method.
General guidelines
1. Always ensure that hot (not boiling) liquid is used, never use cold liquid.
2. Always wear oven gloves when handling the slow cooker in use.
3. Dried beans e.g. dried kidney must always be soaked overnight. They should
be boiled for 10-15 minutes before placing them into the slow cooker.
4. Add tinned beans 30-45 minutes before the end of the cooking time.
5. Rice, noodles and pasta are not recommended for long cooking time (except
pudding rice). Cook them separately and then add during the last 30 minutes.
6. Never place frozen meat of poultry in the slow cooker. It must always be
thoroughly defrosted first.
7. When cooking a meat and root vegetable combination always place the root
vegetable at the bottom of the bowl as they take longer to cook.
8. Do not fill the cooker to the brim with food.
10

9. Always cook with the lid on and the ceramic bowl in position.
10.Vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and turnips require longer cooking than
many meats. Place them on the bottom of the bowl and cover them with liquid.
11.If adding fresh milk or yoghurt, this should be done during the last 2 hours.
Dried milk may be added at the start of cooking.
NOTES :
Remember that frequent lifting of the lid during cooking will extend
cooking time.
The times stated are only a guide and will depend on a number of
factors e.g. quality of ingredients, size of meat and vegetables,
quantities, etc.
Slow cooking occurs at a temperature around boiling point. Liquids do
not boil quickly at this temperature, there is little steam or evaporation.
Many of your favourite recipes can be adapted to the slow cooker.
