1.2 Overview the CLa208
The Tecnare CLa208 array is a compact high-power curvilinear array loudspeaker,
member of the ARRAY family of loudspeakers. Its extended high-frequency headroom delivers
clarity, precision, and a unique proximity effect over its wide operating frequency range of 60 Hz
to 18 kHz. This headroom combines with a 110-degree horizontal coverage pattern to provide
detailed resolution of delicate transient information across a broad coverage area.
The compact size and low
weight of a CLa208 line source complies
with rigging and visual limitations. Any
on-site deployment can be easily and
quickly achieved thanks to
improvements over the previous
generation rigging system. Is equally
suited to touring, rental, and fixed
installation applications. High power-to-
size ratio, low profile, and ease of use
makes it an outstanding system in
corporate AV applications, and ideal for
smaller venues such as theatres,
ballrooms, and clubs. In spite of its small
size, CLa208 produces a peak output of
134 dB SPL with exceptionally frequency
response, making it capable of filling
much larger spaces than one might
expect.
A wide range of system configurations are available for the sound designer and system
engineer, allowing high level of creative freedom. With a fixed horizontal directivity of 110° and a
vertical inter-element variation from 0˚ to 7°, the CLa208 line source is fully configurable to
match any audience geometry.
The CLa208 system can be used either as a main system (FOH or distributed) with the
SW-118M or SW-218V/EB subwoofers and is designed to integrate smoothly and easily with
other Tecnare products. While CLa208 can be used as a main system, individual CLa208
cabinets work well for under-balcony coverage and frontfill. Also, Cla208 is an excellent downfill
or sidefill complement to a CLa21 or CLa312 main system for tours playing a variety of venues.
Tecnare recommends operating the CLa208 loudspeaker on a DSP controller.
Tecnare only recommends using presets developed by Tecnare Sound System. The DP-Series
Processor and T-Series Advanced System Amplifiers are ideal for this purpose.
Thanks to dedicated factory presets, it constitutes an extremely advanced and precise
drive system for the enclosures. In high-end installation projects, the T-Series amplified
controller can deliver maximum power headroom and the best possible performances. With one
transducer section per output channel and the independent DSP treatment of each loudspeaker
enclosure, this approach brings maximum discretization with a one-to-one-to-one link, from
input-to-processing-to-enclosure.
The DP-4896 Digital Loudspeaker Controllers and the T-Series amplified controllers feature
the unique Virtual Xover limiter for passive 2-way enclosures, a Tmax transducer thermal
limiters and Xmax over-excursion protection limiter.

1.3 Connections
CLa208 loudspeaker utilizes Neutrik®SpeakON®connectors. There are two NLT4
connectors on the rear of each CLa208. These connectors mate with Neutrik NL-4 or NL-4
compatible in-line cable connectors. All four pins of both connectors are wired in parallel to link
multiple loudspeakers on a single amplifier output. Remember that parallel connection reduces
the total impedance (Ω) seen by the amplifier.
The total impedance of loudspeaker connected in parallel must not drop below the
minimum operating impedance of the amplifier.
The following subsections describe the electrical
connections.
IN speakON®point 1+ 1- 2+ 2-
Connection LF +
LF -
HF + HF -
The CLa208 uses the pin assignment 1+/1+ for Low
frequency and 2+/2- for High frequency. Under special order,
the customer can required a passive version with internal
crossover network.
Using one as the input, the second connector allows for
direct connection to a second cabinet.
1.4 Processing and Amplification
Only operate Tecnare loudspeaker with a correctly configured Tecnare preset. Tecnare
offer a complete solution that guarantees the highest level of performance. A complete range of
controllers, amplified and amplified controller with DSP are available to get this objective.
Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker components.
1.4.1 Processing
There are two options using our digital controllers. Our DP2696 or DP4896. The options
vary depending on the final application. Refer to DP2696 or DP4896 user manual.
1.4.2 Amplification
To power Array Series, Tecnare recommends amplifiers with the power ratings enough
to feed the loudspeakers. For high power or live applications, it is recommended to
oversize the amplifiers relative to the nominal AES output of the subwoofers.

Operation Manual
10
In certain specific cases it is possible to slightly under-power the subs or loudspeakers
as long as the amplifier will not be driven to its limits.
In any case, the Tecnare processors should be deployed in front of the amp to ensure
that the amplifiers to not go into clip.
The DP4896 processors also include:
- Virtual Xover Limiter for passive systems
- Thermal protection from power surges or overload
- Xmax Excursion displacement protection
The T20-44 amplifier is the ideal companion for maximum performance of the Sub
Series loudspeakers. This amplifier controller with DSP offer a complete both preset and
protection solution for any application.

2.2 Line Source and Subwoofer
If, higher SPL is necessary, or the program content requires low-frequecy beyond that
provided by the standalone line source, then subwoofers must be used to extended your
CLa208 loudspeaker array.
Tecnare SW118M, SW218V or SW218EB can achieve frequency response down to 30 to
45 Hz range, extending the low-end bandwidth.
Preset for DP-Series processor and T-Series amplifier are available for different
configuration and applications.

3Loudspeaker Connection
Tecnare®Sound Systems recommended operating the CLa208 loudspeaker together
Tecnare loudspeaker controllers.
Tecnare®only recommends using preset/amplifier developed by Tecnare, otherwise there is
a risk of damaging the loudspeaker components. DP Series Loudspeaker Controller, PA Series
amplifier and T-Series amplifier are ideal for this purpose.
Ensure that the right preset was selected before connecting the loudspeaker with the
amplifier.
Operating with an incorrect preset can damage part of the loudspeaker.
Ensure that the amplifier is properly size according to requirements. Under-power or
oversize power amplifier without the supervision of an expert may damage the loudspeaker.

4Integrating CLa208
4.1 Integrating CLa208 with subwoofers
When additional subwoofer impact and higher SPL output is desired, should make
configurations of CLa208 cabinets with SW-118M and SW-218V/218EB can be deployed.
Deploying the proper amount of SWs subwoofers with CLa208 cabinets will ensure that the
system will deliver impressive results in even the most demanding situations.
The ideal ratio of CLa208 loudspeakers to subwoofers depend on different factors:
1.- Array configuration (number of elements and angles)
2.- Placement of the subwoofers – whether they are flown or ground-stacked
3.- Frequency content of the signal being reproduced by the system
For most applications, two CLa208 for every additional one SW-118M is ideal for
applications where LF reinforcement is needed.
The 2:1 ratio provides sufficient headroom for both the subwoofers and the CLa208's to
reach MAX SPL (limiters) at the same time. Other ratios can be used depending on the desired
tonal balance target, MAX SPL, and application.
The LED limit on DSP or amplifier indicates when the safe power level is exceeded. If
the subwoofers used in the system begin to limit before reaching the required SPL at
low-frequencies, consider adding more subwoofers to satisfy the SPL requirements
without exposing the driver to excessive heat and/ or excursion with the eventual damage.
4.2 Integrating SW-118M subwoofer with CLa208
Curvilinear Array Loudspeaker
A CLa208 array can be deployed in combination witn Tecnare SW-118M subwoofer in
applications were LF reinforcement is needed.
When fitted with rigging hardware, SW-118M subwoofers may either be ground stacked,
flown as part of a CLa208 array, or flown separately alongside a CLa208 array, to boost the
system’s low-frequency output and headroom. For flown arrays, the SW-118M attaches to the
THV-118 rigging grid; the CLa208 attach to the bottom of the SW-118M via the TTF208-118
Transition frame, which support both uptilt and downtilt for the flown loudspeakers. When flown
separately, SW-118Ms should be flown so that the spacing between the line of CLa208
enclosures in less than 1 m / 3.3ft.
See the THV-118 and TTF-118-208 Rigging & Groundstack Instructions for more detailed
information on rigging a SW-118M
The SW-118M extends the low-frequency response of the system by approximately one
octave, as well as provides additional headroom in the lowest octave of the CLa208's range.
A general recommendation is to use CLa208s and SW-118Ms in a 2:1 ratio.
4.2.1 Signal Delay on Subwoofers
If SW-118Ms are flown or stacked with CLa208 as configured in DP-Series Loudspeaker
controlled or T-Series Amplifier, use the factory preset setting.

Configuration
17
For other configuration, it will usually be necessary to determine the signal delay setting by
measurement.
When loudspeaker and subwoofers are physically separated by more than 1,2m (4feet), or delay
must be used between them, a measurement system such as SMAART®should be used to
determine the correct delay and polarity.
4.3 Integrating CLa208 as Side-Fill or Down-Fill with CLa21
Curvilinear Arrays
Many applications require extreme down-fill coverage. CLa208’s acoustical characteristics
promote seamless integration with CLa21 when used as down-fill in CLa21 curvilinear arrays
(via the TTF-21/208 transition frame), as well as when CLa208 arrays are being used as side-
fills along with CLa21 main arrays. Understanding the differences and similarities between the
two loudspeakers is very important for designing and for fine-tuning system coverage.
For a combined CLa21/CLa208 array design will be dependent on three factors:
1. Number and Type of Array Elements. Determining the number of elements of each
type to use is critical: The number of elements drastically affects the uniformity of
coverage of both SPL and frequency response. The number of long-throw elements
(CLa21) and downfill (CLa208) needs to be carefully selected.
2. Vertical Splay Angles. Changing the splay angles between cabinets has a significant
impact on vertical coverage, with the result that narrower vertical splay angles produce a
higher Q vertical beamwidth and longer throw in the top elements (CLa21), while wider
splay lowers the Q at high frequencies for coverage on the lower elements (CLa208).
3. Horizontal Coverage. Horizontal coverage needs to be divided in two sections. The
top section is covered by CLa21 (70 degrees) and the lower section is covered by
CLa208 (110 degrees). The horizontal coverage of these two sections can be considered
fairly constant, depending on the particular loudspeaker enclosure covering each area of
the venue, regardless of the number of array elements on each section or the angles
between them
