Terms of warranty
Lautsprecher Teufel GmbH provides a twelve-year
warranty for loudspeakers and a two-year war-
ranty for amplifiers and electrical components,
starting at the purchase date. The warranty cov-
ers all materials and time needed. It does not
cover devices damaged as a result of improper
use or electrical/mechanical overloading. The
original Teufel invoice is your proof of warranty.
This warranty applies exclusively to loudspeakers,
amplifiers and electronic components purchased
from Teufel for private use. The warranty does not
apply to loudspeakers, amplifiers and electronic
components sold to consumers through third-
party dealers. For third-party products supplied
together with the Teufel system, the terms of
warranty of the manufacturer in question apply.
When Teufel products are resold privately, the
warranty may be transferred to the new owner.
For this, the new owner requires the original
Teufel invoice.
Returns policy
Teufel provides an eight-week right of return with
a money-back guarantee.
You may only return individual components from
a set if Lautsprecher Teufel offers these com-
ponents for sale separately. If you return one or
more individual components from a set, this voids
the discount that Lautsprecher Teufel provides
on the sale of components as a set. This means
that for individually returned components from a
set, you will be refunded the difference between
the set price and the total purchase price of the
individual components you decide to keep, i.e.,
we will deduct the discount that applies to set
purchases.
For more information on returns, please refer to
the returns form provided with your shipment(or
online at www.teufel.eu in the support section).
If you decide to return any or all of the purchased
goods, please contact us first.
Note that we can only process and accept
returned goods if you have telephoned us in
advance and discussed the required returns
procedure.

5.2 speaker placement
Note:
** The FCR satellites can also be
installed on stands. However, we
recommend fastening the
S 500 FCR speakers to a wall or
placing them on shelving since
the THX Select2 license has only
been awarded for wall-mounted
installations.
General notes on speaker placement
With their stylish and modern design, Teufel
System 5 blends nicely with living room environ-
ments. In order to achieve the best possible audio
quality from your Teufel loudspeaker set, however,
there are a number of speaker placement rules to
consider. These apply particularly to home thea-
tre use.
As a general rule, any home theatre system should
be concentrated around the viewing area,i.e.,that
part of the room that contains the TV/screen and
the main seating spots. If at all possible, the TV/
screen should be placed at a central position rela-
tive to the viewing/listening spots.
Our speaker placement suggestions, as illustrat-
ed on the next few pages, are designed for the
best possible multi-channel sound reproduction
in your home. Of course, in the reality of your liv-
ing room there may be other factors that do not
allow the suggested placements. You should at-
tempt to comply with these guidelines as best as
possible. However, state-of-the-art AV receivers
also offer many options to electronically compen-
sate for poor speaker placements. In general, the
following applies:
Start with our recommendations and experiment
with the placements until you find what works in
your room from a visual and acoustic standpoint.
Trust your ears(and eyes)!
Centre
The centre speaker reproduces virtually all spo-
ken sound, including most dialogue. In relation to
the main listening spot, place it centrally under
or above the TV/screen. If your S 500 FCR** is
placed lower than 40 cm or higher than 1.20 m,
angle it slightly upwards or downwards towards
the listening spot.
Front
The front speakers should be positioned the same
as with conventional stereo speakers–forming an
equilateral triangle with the listener. In a home
theatre setup, the left and right front speakers
should be set up equidistant to the TV/screen or
mounted to the wall using the brackets on the
rear. For this purpose, the S 500 FCR satellites
from Teufel are fitted with integrated M6 pack-
ing screws on the base of the cabinet. The pack-
ing screws are used to lock the speaker stands in
place.** Our universal stand AC 4002 SP is suitable
for this purpose. Speaker stands ensure that the
satellite speakers are placed at the best possible
height. If you mount the speakers on the wall or
on a bookshelf, make sure the speaker height is
between 40 cm and 1.20 m.If these recommended
values are not practical in your listening envi-
ronment and you need to position the speakers
higher or lower, you should angle them towards
the listening spot.
Make sure that the centre speaker and the two
front speakers are positioned in a straight line,or
on a slight arc with the TV/screen. If the distance
between the listening position and the speakers
varies significantly, the spatial imaging will suf-
fer.
Make sure to align your speakers properly to ex-
ploit their full potential.
Subwoofer
By using the recommended crossover frequency
of 80 Hz, you can position the subwoofer any-
where in the room without affecting the output
from the other loudspeakers. The ideal position is
somewhere along the axis between the two front
speakers. However, feel free to experiment with
placing it anywhere you like. So that the down-
firing subwoofer functions properly, attach the
rubber feet to the subwoofers! Before fastening
the feet, lay the subwoofer on its side on soft
material (such as a blanket) to prevent damage
or scratches to the subwoofer and/or the sur-
face below. Using a suitable Phillips screwdriver,
tighten the included screws until the rubber feet
are at the height of the pre-drilled holes on the
bottom of the subwoofer.
Rear(Cinema Set)
The following applies to System 5:
Make sure to use S 50 D dipole speakers for the
rear channels. The S 500 FCR can be used for the
front and centre speakers. The dipoles are marked
as“Right” and “Left”. To guarantee the best listen-
ing conditions, they should be installed at the
proper locations.***
*** Other placement options
for the rear speakers are
described on page 10.
Page 7
Note:
According to the THX
specications, the speakers
have been conceived to achieve
optimum performance when
used WITH covers.
WITHOUT the covers, the
frequency response may become
uneven with increased highs. For
this reason, we do not
recommend using
them this way.

5.1 speaker placement
We recommend
placing the rear speakers
somewhere in the
rear grey area.
Rear/side speaker placement option A
Cinema Set
Ideally, the S 50 D dipole speakers should be
mounted to the sides of the listening spot at a
height of 1.40 - 2.10 m. The Teufel dipole speakers
ship with a simple integrated wall mount. In this
placement option, the rear dipole speakers radi-
ate forwards (towards the TV/screen) and back-
wards (towards the rear wall of the room). This
way, listeners only hear reflections from the wall
and not the direct sound. The rear-radiating side
of the dipole speaker should be at least 10 cm
away from the rear wall of the room.
Rear/side placement option B Cinema Set
You can also wall-mount the dipole speakers be-
hind the listening spot, at a height of 1.40 - 2.10 m.
We recommend using our L-Lock wall bracket to
mount the S 50 D speaker cabinets so that they
can be set to a 45 degree angle and radiate from
the front towards the side wall and from the back
towards the rear wall. Thus, the dipoles reflect
out the rear and side walls and produce the de-
sired spatial diffusion. The front side of the dipole
speakers should be at least 10 cm away from the
side walls of the room.
Rear placement option C Concert Set
To set up the concert set with five direct-radiat-
ing S 500 FCR satellites, place the rear boxes at
the left and right of the listening position. Ide-
ally, they should be at the same height, e.g., on
a shelf or, even better, on a wall. If you need to
mount the speakers significantly higher or lower,
experiment with angling them towards the listen-
ing spot. To attach the speakers to the wall, we
recommend using our Multilock wall mounts. The
S 500 FCR rear speakers should be positioned at
least 1.00 m away from the listener. If they are
any closer to the listening spot, make sure that
the front of the speakers is not directly pointed
at the listener but into the room, angled towards
the TV/screen.

8· System 5
7.1 speaker placement
If you have augmented your System 5 5.1 set with
two additional compatible satellite speakers(see
page 5 of this manual), you can make full use of
your 7.1 AV receiver and upgrade to a 7.1 home
theatre system.
Front · Centre · Subwoofer · Rear(Side)
Set the speakers up in the same pattern as with
a 5.1 system. Please refer to “Speaker Positions in
5.1 Configuration” on the previous two pages.
Rear centre
Ideally in a 7.1 system, the rear effects speakers
(rear sides) are positioned on the side walls next
to the listening spot and the rear centre speak-
ers are positioned on the rear wall at a height
between 1.40 and 2.10 metres.
If the distance between the rear speakers and
your listening spot is less than 1.00 m, we recom-
mend using S 50 D dipole speakers instead of the
direct-radiating S 500 FCR as a rear centre speak-
er. In this case, simply expand your “5.1 Cinema
Set” with two additional S 500 D dipole speakers.
Viewed from above, the imaginary lines between
the four rear speakers used in your 7.1 setup
should ideally form an isosceles trapezium. Each
side of the trapezium should be at least 1.00 m
long. If the various side lengths differ or if the
four rear speakers are mounted at different
heights, you can compensate for these asym-
metries by entering the distances between the
individual speakers into the “Speaker Setup” util-
ity of your AV receiver/amplifier.
Example of a System 5.1 Cin-
ema set with two additional
S 500 FCR speakers for a 7.1
upgrade.
We recommend placing the
rear speakers somewhere in
the grey rear area (also if
the S 500 D dipole speaker
is used).

Connecting
System 5 can be connected to any current Dolby
Digital/DTS 5.1/6.1/7.1 AV receiver/amplifier for a
5.1 configuration with an active subwoofer. If your
AV receiver is 6.1/7.1, do not connect the Rear
Centre Out(s). To take full advantage of a 7.1 re-
ceiver, you require additional speakers (see page
5). Use two of these speakers for a 7.1 setup. An-
other option is to use two S 500 D dipole speakers
(also for 7.1 mode).
If your receiver is 5.1, connect the front, centre
and rear speakers as shown in the diagram.
1. Connect the “Line In” input of the subwoofer to
the “Sub Out”(or similarly named) output of your
AV receivers using a mono RCA cable.
Important!
For a 7.1 setup, connect the
additional two L/R rear centre
speakers to the L/R Rear Centre
Outs of the 7.1 AV receiver.

Setting up the AV receiver/amplifier
To take full advantage of your System 5 with the S
5000 SW active subwoofer, use the “Speaker Set-
up” utility of your AV receiver to set the satellites
to “small” or “normal” (not “large”). This ensures
that the speakers will receive the proper amount
of signal and that the volumes of the subwoofers
and front speakers will be matched.
Set the subwoofer to “On” using the “Speaker
Setup” utility (bass management and/or speaker
management) of your receiver. Set the crossover
frequency for the System 5 to 80 Hz. 100 Hz is
another possible setting.
Setting up the subwoofer
Many current AV receivers are able to automati-
cally set the correct phase and level for the sub-
woofer using the “Speaker Setup” utility by en-
tering the distance between the subwoofers and
the listening spot. For this to work correctly, the
phase switch of the subwoofer must be set to
“0°” and the volume to “THX”.
If you are using an older AV receiver or another
type of amplifier that does not allow you to set
the subwoofer distance:
You can use the phase switch of the subwoof-
er to manually adjust the phase to the other
speakers. The goal here is to ensure that all
speaker membranes move in the same direc-
tion in the vicinity of the crossover frequency.
If the phase is not set correctly, this can lead to
reduced bass response or even cancellation of
bass frequencies. If the subwoofer is positioned
between the two front speakers, we recommend
setting the phase to “0°
”.
If the subwoofer is po-
sitioned closer to the listening spot, a phase of
“180°
”
may be more appropriate. If the subwoof-
er is placed elsewhere, the “180°
”
setting can be
used to compensate for reduced bass response.
Always set the phase control to the position
where the bass response is strongest.
Compared to the home theatre settings, the
volume setting of the subwoofer may need to
be readjusted accordingly for playing different
types of music. Whereas an action-packed DVD
typically contains massive amounts of sub-bass,
much music content may not. This will be espe-
cially noticeable if you calibrate your system for
optimum DVD playback. To find the best compro-
mise between differing sound sources, use your
own subjective judgement.

This switch adapts the internal amplifier to the
local mains voltage. NEVER change this from the
standard local voltage. In Europe, the correct set-
ting is 220 - 240 V.
Mains power connector
Connect the included mains power cable that
complies with your local mains power require-
ments.
Fuse
The mains power fuse is located here. Using a
suitable screwdriver, replace this fuse with a suit-
able one(see figure on page 12). Only replace the
fuse when the subwoofer is completely discon-
nected from the mains power supply! Failure
to do so can be fatal!
Power
In the OFF setting, the subwoofer is switched off;
ON means that it is switched on.
Line In
Connect the mono RCA cable here,
Signal arrives from Sub Out of receiver.
Line Out
If you do not want to use a Y-splitter, you can
connect the second subwoofer here.
Automatic starting
When set to “On”, the subwoofer will remain per-
manently on.With the “Auto” setting, the subwoof-
er will switch on automatically when it receives an
audio signal. But after approx. 20 minutes without
receiving an audio signal, it will switch off.
Volume
Use the “Volume” controller to set the volume of
the subwoofer. We recommend setting the con-
troller to the position marked “THX”.
Phase
This switch determines the phase relationship be-
tween the subwoofer and the front/centre speak-
ers. If the subwoofer is positioned as shown on
page 6,set the phase to 0°.Otherwise, set it to 180°.

The subwoofer is not responding
If the Power LED on the rear
panel does not light up, re-
place the fuse (see page 11,
point ).
If the power LED on the
front side is lit, set the sub-
woofer volume level(page 11,
point ) to “Min”, unplug the subwoofer's RCA ca-
ble from the amplifier, turn up the volume slightly
and touch the tip (“hot” signal line) of the RCA
connector with your finger. If this produces a hum
or crackle, the fault is with the amplifier or the
amplifier settings. If the subwoofer remains com-
pletely silent, please contact our support team.
The subwoofer hums
Hum may be caused by connected audio equip-
ment as well as by problems with the mains power.
In most cases, excessive hum is caused by one of
the following:
1. The subwoofer is connected to a different elec-
trical circuit than the other components. Make
sure that all connected devices (including any
computers) are powered from the same elec-
trical circuit, i.e., the same mains socket.
2. The antenna connected to the audio system or
TV has a different earth potential than the an-
tenna socket. To test this, simply disconnect all
of the antenna cables from the wall socket. If
this makes the hum disappear, you will require
a ferrite bead (available at most electronics
stores). Simply insert the ferrite bead between
the antenna socket and the TV/receiver.
3. A line filter (to be purchased separately) can
also be useful for hum removal. Note that you
will need to connect all your electrical devices
to the line filter. Make sure you can return the
line filter for a refund if it does not produce
the desired results.
4. Certain powerstrips can also cause hum. Try
removing your powerstrip and plug the mains
cable of the subwoofer directly into the mains
socket.
5. Unplug the mains cable, rotate the connector
plug by 180°, and plug it back into the mains
socket.
6. If you have trouble locating the source of the
hum, check whether the subwoofer is less noisy
when you plug it into the mains connection in
another room (e.g., using an extension cable).
Also, try disconnecting the subwoofer's RCA
cable from the receiver to see whether the
hum is caused by one of the other connected
devices.
