Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1Ensurethatyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping
2Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet
3UseaslowliftingforceNevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift
4Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinyourbackDonotattempttoliftanyobjectthatweighsmorethan16kg(35lb)orthatyou
thinkistooheavyforyou
•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe
•Beforeyoustartthemachine,ensurethatotherservicetechniciansandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing
themachine
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit
•DonotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachineEnsurethatyoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbowsIfyourhairislong,fastenit
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,about8
centimeters(3inches)fromtheend
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyeglasses,ormetalfastenersforyourclothing,becausemetal
objectsaregoodelectricalconductors
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouarehammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoyoureyes
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwiresReplaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer
•FanlouversonthemachinehelptopreventoverheatingofinternalcomponentsDonotobstructfan
louversorcoverthemwithlabelsorstickers

Electricalsafety
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment
Important:
•UseonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipmentSomehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoftmaterial
thatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents
•Manycustomershave,neartheirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefibersto
decreaseelectrostaticdischarges(ESD)Donotusethistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectrical
shock
•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutletIfanelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–Removingorinstallingmainunits
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercordIfyoucannotunplugit,askthecustomer
topoweroffthewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachine,andtolockthewallboxintheoffposition
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyouThatpersonmustbe
theretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback
CAUTION:
Anelectricalshockcanoccuronlywhenthereisacompletecircuit.Byobservintheabove
rule,youmaypreventacurrentfrompassinthrouhyourbody.
–Whenusingtesters,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes
ObservethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltagesInstructionsforthese
precautionsareinthesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformationUseextremecarewhenmeasuring
highvoltages
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters
•NeverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuitFirst,checkthatithasbeenpoweredoff
•AlwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkareaExamplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors,
nongroundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andmissingsafetygrounds
•DonottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirrorThesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweron:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
–Unitssimilartothoselistedabove

ThepurposeofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditionsAseach
machinewasdesignedandbuilt,requiredsafetyitemswereinstalledtoprotectusersandservicetechnicians
frominjuryThisguideaddressesonlythoseitemsY oushouldusegoodjudgmenttoidentifypotential
safetyhazardsduetoattachmentofnon-ThinkPadfeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythisinspectionguide
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproblem
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock)
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorabulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Todeterminewhetherthereareanypotentiallyunsafeconditions,usethefollowingchecklistatthebeginning
ofeveryservicetaskBeginthecheckswiththepoweroff,andthepowercorddisconnected

electrostaticdischarge(ESD)ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects
ProtectagainstESDdamagebyequalizingthechargesothatthemachine,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge
