DESCRIPTION
The Tjernlund Cool Breeze™ Garage Fan ( odel CB14) pulls hot air from
the garage ceiling and exhausts it into the garage attic where it then can
flow out of the ridge, roof or gable vents. Outdoor air replaces the hot
exhausted air lowering air temperatures and reducing the thermal heat gain
of the garage’s floor, structure and contents. The fan can also be used to
exhaust non-combustible contaminants from the garage.
The CB14 comes with an adjustable temperature activation switch for sim-
ple, automatic operation. It can also be wired for manual or automatic oper-
ation. Other controls are available and sold separately.
Included in the CB14 is the fan assembly, intake plenum, ceiling radiation
damper, fan intake grille, (2) outdoor intake grilles, mounting brackets and
hardware packet with instructions.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Each Cool Breeze™ Garage Fan is electrically factory line tested before shipment. After opening carton, inspect thoroughly
for shipment damage. Fan should rotate freely and all electrical wires and connections should be secure. If any damage is
found, notify freight carrier and your distributor immediately and file a concealed damage claim.
OPERATION
The CB14 can be wired to be controlled manually by a wall switch (not included), by the included temperature switch, or
both. Also available from Tjernlund are wall mount timers (P/N 950-9300) and wireless wall switches (P/N SWS). Contact
Tjernlund for more information on these controls.
INSTALLATION
WARNING
The CB14 must be installed by a qualified installer in accordance with these instructions and all local codes or in their
absence in accordance with the latest editions of the International Residential Code, International Electrical Code or prevail-
ing local codes. Improper installation can create a hazardous condition such as fire, electric shock or personal injury.
To reduce these risks significantly, use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer. If you have questions,
contact Tjernlund Products. Always disconnect the unit from its power source before installation and servicing.

INSTALLATION
LOCATION WARNING

intake vents may lead to more complete garage coverage and better results.
Locating rows of drywall screws may help identify the location of joists along the ceiling. ake sure the location you choose
is a suitable considering:
1) Electrical, gas, water lines or structurally critical areas of your home that may be located in your attic
2) The combined height of the fan, intake plenum and open radiation damper in relation to the roof pitch
3) Electrical access for the fan motor
4) Air flow paths to gable, ridge or roof vents
1. Outline a 16”x16” square on your garage ceiling at the desired fan location
considering the above points.
2. Cut along outline with drywall knife to create hole opening (Figure A).
3. Intake plenum can be pushed up into the hole and secured from the garage (Figure B) or placed on ceiling from attic and
secured from above (Figure C). Center the intake plenum along opening in the drywall and rotate so that the sides
with the three mounting holes (used later) are perpendicular to the joists/trusses.
3a. If mounting the intake plenum from the garage:
-Secure 2 2” x 4” boards between the joists and along edges of the hole. These can typically be cut to 22.5” and
secured with screws or nails if joists are 24” on center.
-Insert intake plenum into hole from garage and secure it by driving screws through the 3 mounting holes on each
side of the intake plenum and then through the drywall and into the secured 2” x 4” boards.

3b. If mounting the intake plenum from the attic:
-Use the included mounting brackets. Break apart the mounting brackets as shown (Figure D).
- Bend the mounting bracket ends and insert one mounting bracket into the other to form a sliding mounting bracket
(Figure E). Repeat with the other set of brackets to form two separate sliding mounting brackets.
-Expand the mounting bracket to the full width of your trusses or joist (Figure F). Hold against intake plenum and
secure using provided screws the mounting bracket at each of the three mounting holes on the intake plenum.
-Repeat on the other side of the intake plenum.
-Secure both mounting bracket ends to the truss or joist. Repeat on the other side of the intake plenum.
4. anually insert crimped end of fan into the radiation damper. Drill 1/8” holes through both the radiation damper and fan
on the 4 sides of the fan assembly (damper and fan) (Figure G). Secure the radiation damper to the fan using the 4
included screws (Figure H).
5. Place fan assembly (damper and fan) onto the intake plenum with radiation damper up (Figure I).
Drill 1/8” holes through both the fan and plenum on the 4 sides of the fan. Secure the fan to the
plenum using the 4 included screws.
6. Pull the wings of the radiation dampers together and secure them together using the fusible link.
7. Wire the fan using the wiring diagrams listed in the Wiring section.

8. Use a flathead screw driver to adjust the temperature setting of the thermostat switch to the desired activation
temperature. The fan will operate once that temperature is reached and run until the garage is approximately 20F cooler
(see chart below).
Note: The switch is sensing the temperature at the location of the switch (the bottom part of the attic), so adjust the setting
slightly higher than the temperature you would like to maintain in your garage.
9. Secure the fan intake grille against the ceiling of the garage so the louvers face the intake
grilles. Align the holes of the grille and theholes of the intake plenum (Figure J).
10. Cut 12” x 12” holes in your garage door or garage walls and mount the included in fresh air
intake grilles to allow outdoor air to enter the garage space as the fan operates (Figure K).

11. Position grilles over the opening ensuring the louvers face downward to prevent rain from

head meets the grille.
