1 Introduction
T ank you for purc asing a PCEye Explore device from Tobii Dynavox!
To ensure t e optimal performance of t is product, please take t e time to read t is manual carefully.
1.1 Explanation of Admonitions
In t is manual we use t ree (3) levels of admonitions as follows:
Is used for notifying t e user of somet ing important or of somet ing t at needs special attention.
Is used to inform of somet ing t at could cause arm to, or malfunction of, t e equipment.

1.3 Intended Use
T e PCEye Explore is an entry level, perip eral Eye tracker t at opens up t e wonderful world of Gaze Interaction to everyone.
Wit t e PCEye Explore, young or inexperienced users get a simple, fun and no-fail way to learn ow to use Eye tracking and
Gaze Interaction, w ile at t e same time preparing t em for AAC communication.
T e PCEye Explore fits snuggly on your laptop or docks under retail computer screens
T e PCEye Explore is intended to be used in an indoor environment.

2 Safety
2.1 Mounting Warning
T e PCEye Explore s ould be mounted according to MANUFACTURER instructions of approved mounts.
Tobii Dynavox or its agents are not liable for damage or injuries to a person or its property due to a PCEye Explore fall-
ing from a mounted configuration. T e mounting of a PCEye Explore is done entirely at t e user’s own risk.
T e double sided tape supplied wit t e ad esive Magnetic Mounting Plates is designed to permanently attac t e
bracket to t e monitor/laptop. Attempting to remove t e bracket after attac ing it using t e supplied tape can result in
damage bot to t e monitor/laptop and t e bracket.
Do not lick t e tape or place any part of t e tape or Magnetic Mounting Plate in one's mout .
Do not mount t e PCEye Explore on monitors positioned above t e ead or face of a users unless using a dedicated
"fixed mounting" solution.
2.2 Epilepsy Warning
Some people wit Photosensitive Epilepsy are susceptible to epileptic seizures or loss of consciousness w en ex-
posed to certain flas ing lig ts or lig t patterns in everyday life. T is may appen even if t e person as no medical
istory of epilepsy or as never ad any epileptic seizures.
A person wit P otosensitive Epilepsy would also be likely to ave problems wit TV screens, some arcade games,
and flickering fluorescent bulbs. Suc people may ave a seizure w ile watc ing certain images or patterns on a mon-
itor, or even w en exposed to t e lig t sources of an eye tracker. It is estimated t at about 3-5% of people wit epi-
lepsy ave t is type of P otosensitive Epilepsy. Many people wit P otosensitive Epilepsy experience an "aura" or
feel odd sensations before t e seizure occurs. If you feel odd during use, move your eyes away from t e eye tracker.
2.3 Infrared Warning
W en activated, t e PCEye Explore emits pulsed infrared (IR) lig t. Certain medical devices are susceptible to dis-
turbance by IR lig t and/or radiation. Do not use t e PCEye Explore w en in t e vicinity of suc susceptible medical
devices as t eir accuracy or proper functionality could be in ibited.
2.4 Magnetic Field Warning
T e PCEye Explore Magnetic Mounting contains magnets. Magnetic fields may interfere wit t e function of cardiac
pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. As a general rule, maintain a minimum distance of 6 inc es
(15 centimeters) between any item wit magnets and your eart device.
2.5 Child Safety
T e PCEye Explore is an advanced computer system and electronic device. As suc it is composed of numerous sep-
arate, assembled parts. In t e ands of a c ild certain of t ese parts ave t e possibility of being separated from t e
device, possibly constituting a c oking azard or anot er danger to t e c ild.
Young c ildren s ould not ave access to, or t e use of, t e device wit out parental or guardian supervision.
2.6 Do not Open the CEye Explore
Non-compliance will result in loss of Warranty! T ere are no user serviceable components inside. Contact
Tobii Dynavox Support if your PCEye Explore is not working properly.

3 Getting Started with CEye Explore
3.1 Installing, Running and Updating CEye Explore
3.1.1 Requirements
For PCEye Explore we recommend t e following minimum system requirements:
•USB 3.0 or ig er
•Operating System: Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
•2.4 GHz quad core Intel i5 or i7
•8 GB RAM memory
•Grap ics 60MB VRAM
•Pixel s ader 2.0 or ig er
•150 MB free disk space for t e installation of t e PCEye Explore software
•.NET 4.5 must be installed on t e device
3.1.2 Installing PCEye Explore
1. Go to ttp://www.TobiiDynavox.com/explore/dl/ and download t e Gaze Point software.
2. Install t e Gaze Point.
3. Follow t e directions on t e screen.
3.1.3 Running t e Gaze Point Software
To start t e Gaze Point software:
•Double-click on t e Gaze Point s ortcut on t e desktop,

1. Select Start Menu >All programs >Tobii Dynavox >Gaze Point
2. Select t e Gaze Point icon.
3.1.4 Updating t e Gaze Point software and t e PCEye Explore Firmware
Tobii Dynavox regularly releases updated versions of t e Gaze Point software.
During t e installation of t e Gaze Point software, t e Update Notifier software will be installed on t e device. T e
Update Notifier will, if t e device is connected to t e Internet, automatically c eck for updated versions of t e Gaze Point soft-
ware and ot er Tobii Dynavox software installed on t e device.
To manually c eck for new updates of t e Gaze Point software, look up t e Update Notifierapplication on t e device and select
t e
(Update Notifier) icon to start t e application.
T e PCEye Explore Firmware will automatically be updated w en a new version is available as long as t e computer is con-
nected to t e internet.

4 First Start Up of CEye Explore
After running t e Gaze Point Installation Guide and attac ing t e PCEye Explore to your computer, t e Gaze Point Setup will
open automatically.
Follow t e on-screen instructions.
Select t e Calibration Settings button to c eck and c ange t e settings for t e calibration. For more information regarding
Calibration Settings, see 7.1.1.3 Calibration Settings, page 15

5.1 ositioning the User

needs to be tilted in order to keep t e users eyes parallel to t e screen and at t e optimal distance, see Figure 5.2 Positioning

Make sure t e user is placed comfortably in relation to t e optimal positioning of, and distance from, t e unit. Be
aware also t at t e user’s comfort, as well as t e Gaze Interaction performance, will be en anced if t e sun is not
s ining directly on t e screen or into t e user’s eyes.
T e optimal distance t at a user s ould be from t e PCEye Explore mounted on a monitor/laptop differs depending on t e size
of t e screen. T e user s ould be positioned at t e optimal distance to allow for t e best possible Gaze Interaction.
Generally, t e larger t e size of t e screen, t e greater t e distance t e user s ould be from t e Eye Tracker / Screen combina-
tion for optimal Gaze Point usage.
Smaller t an a 10 inc screen and larger t an a 27 inc screen s ould not be used for optimal Gaze Point usage, for more infor-
mation see Appendix D Technical Specifications, page 23.
5.1.1 Track Box
T e PCEye Explore allows for extensive Freedom of Head Movement. Once t e PCEye Explore is properly calibrated and
placed in front of t e user, no furt er adjustments are required.
At 70 cm (27.5 in) t e PCEye Explore allows for lateral Freedom of Head Movement in an area of about 48 × 39 cm (19 × 15
in).
In order to function properly for Gaze Point usage t e user needs at least one eye in t e track box at all times.

6 Gaze oint Settings
To access t e Gaze Point Settings, select t e
(Settings) button on t e Gaze Point Controller.
To Start Gaze Point with Windows:
•Toggle t e Start Gaze Point with Windows switc to On (default value is Off)
C ange Keyboard Shortcut:
1. Select t e Change Key button for t e command to c ange:
•Pause/Start Gaze Point:

2. Select a new Key
Only one key can be selected, no keyboard combinations can be selected.
Esc and Enter can not be selected.
C ange Click options:
•Drag t e andle or Click on t e Dwell Time time bar to set t e Dwell Time between 100 —3000 ms.
Default value is 1200 ms.

7 Eye Tracker Settings
7.1 Eye Tracker
7.1.1 User Profile
Creating a user profile for eac user on t e device will optimize eac users Gaze Interaction experience. Eac user will t en
ave a setting and calibration matc ing t e t eir specifications.
7.1.1.1 Add/Delete User Profiles
Add a User Profile:
1. Select t e
(Add) button.
2. T e new Profile dialog will open.
3. Follow t e on-screen instructions to setup t e user and to calibrate.
Delete a User Profile
1. Select t e Profile to delete in t e Drop down list
2. Select t e (Delete) button.

7.1.1.2 Test Eye Tracking
Select t e Test Eye Tracking button to access t e Test Eye Tracking page.
Wit t e Test Eye Tracking page, it is possible to c eck t e accuracy and performance of t e Eye tracker. All Calibration points
are visualized wit a circle wit orange dot in t e center. T is is t e center of eac calibration point. W en entering t is page,
t e Eye tracker will start reading t e Gaze data for t e user. T e Gaze data will be s own on screen in real time. Orange dots
will appear w ere t e user as is/ er Gaze. By looking at t e calibration point it is possible to determinate if t e calibration is
accurate or if it is good to do a recalibration of t e user.
To perform a recalibration, select t e Recalibrate button.
To s ow t e position guide, select t e Position guide button.

Use t e Position Guide to elp determine t e optimal eig t, orizontal and distance positioning for Gaze Interaction wit t e
PCEye Explore.
Ideally, t e two dots t at represent t e user’s eyes s ould be in t e middle of t e Position Guide.
7.1.1.3 Calibration Settings
Select t e Calibration Settings button to access t e Calibration Settings page.

On t e Calibrations Settings page, t e calibration procedure for calibrating a user can be adjusted.
To activate Step through calibration:
1. Select t e Use “S”key to step through calibration c eck box to activate t e function.
T e following settings can be c anged by selecting t e drop down list for eac settings:

Sometimes it is easier to for t e user to focus and to follow a picture or video instead of t e dot w en trying to do a
calibration.

7.1.3 Eye Detection Indicator
T e Eye Detection Indicator,

PCEye Explore as detected t e users eyes.
Select t e drop down list to c ange t e appearance of t e Eye Detection Indicator.

possible, make sure you ave access to your PCEye Explore and, if possible, an Internet connection. You s ould also be able to
supply t e serial number of t e device, w ic you find on t e bottom of t e device. Find our Support pages online at: www.

A2 Warranty
Please read t e Manufacturer’s Warranty paper included in t e package.
Please read t is User’s Manual carefully before using t e device. T e warranty is only valid if t e device is used according to t e
User’s Manual. Disassembling t e PCEye Explore device will void t e warranty.
Keep the original packaging materials for the PCEye Explore.
In case t e device needs to be returned to Tobii Dynavox for Warranty related issues or repair, it is required t at t e
original packaging (or equal equivalent) is used for s ipping.

Appendix B Compliance Information
All PCEye Explore are CE-marked, indicating compliance wit t e essential ealt and safety requirements set out in
European Directives.
B1 FCC Statement
T is device complies wit Part 15 of t e FCC Rules. Operation is subject to t e following two conditions: (1) t is device may
not cause armful interference, and (2) t is device must accept any interference received, including interference t at may cause
undesired operation.
Modifications not expressly approved by Tobii Dynavox could void t e user’s aut ority to operate t e equipment
under FCC rules.
T is equipment as been tested and found to comply wit t e limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of t e FCC
Rules. T ese limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against armful interference in a residential installation. T is
equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance wit t e
instructions, may cause armful interference to radio communications.
However, t ere is no guarantee t at interference will not occur in a particular installation. If t is equipment does cause armful
interference to radio or television reception, w ic can be determined by turning t e equipment off and on, t e user is
encouraged to try to correct t e interference by one or more of t e following measures:
•Reorient or relocate t e receiving antenna.
•Increase t e separation between t e equipment and receiver.
•Connect t e equipment into a wall outlet on a circuit different from t at to w ic t e receiver is connected.
