The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your
attention to possible dangers. The safety symbols, and
their explanations, deserve your careful attention and

SYMBOL MEANING
SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL: Indicates

required in order to avoid serious personal

NOTE: Advises you of information or instructions vital
to the operation or maintenance of the equipment.
•Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before filling
the fuel tank. Never remove the cap of the fuel tank, or
add fuel, when the engine is hot. Never operate the unit
without the fuel cap securely in place. Loosen the fuel
tank cap slowly to relieve any pressure in the tank.
•Mix and add fuel in a clean, well-ventilated area
outdoors where there are no sparks or flames. Slowly
remove the fuel cap only after stopping engine. Do not
smoke while fueling or mixing fuel. Wipe up any spilled
fuel from the unit immediately.
•Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilled fuel. Do
not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate.
•Move the unit at least 30 feet (9.1 m) from the fueling
source and site before starting the engine. Do not
smoke. Keep sparks and open flames away from the
area while adding fuel or operating the unit.
•Never start or run the unit inside a closed room or
building. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill. Operate this
unit only in a well ventilated area outdoors.
SPECIAL SAFETY WARNINGS FOR ELECTRIC
POWERHEADS AND TREE PRUNERS
•CORD SETS: Make sure your cord set is in good
condition. When using a cord set, be sure to use a
cord that is heavy enough to carry the current that your
unit will draw. An undersized cord set will cause a drop
in line voltage resulting in loss of power and
overheating. See the operator’s manual for the unit that
will power this add-on for the recommended cord size.
WARNING: Gasoline is highly flammable, and
its vapors can explode if ignited. Take the
following precautions:

•Inspect all extension cords and the unit power
connection periodically. Look closely for deterioration,
cuts or cracks in the insulation. Also inspect the
connections for damage. Replace the cords if any
defects or damage appear.
•Prevent disconnection of the tree pruner powerhead
from extension cord during operation by using a plug-
receptacle retaining strap, connector, or by making a
knot as shown below:
•Avoid dangerous environments. Never operate your unit
in damp or wet conditions. Moisture is a shock hazard.
•
Do not use the unit in the rain. Do not use in or around water.
•Do not handle the plug or unit with wet hands or
standing on any wet surfaces.
•Keep pruner away from power lines or electrical wires.
•Do not leave the unit plugged in when not in use, changing
attachments or add-ons, or while being serviced.
WHILE OPERATING
•Wear safety glasses or goggles that are marked as
meeting ANSI Z87.1 standards, and ear/hearing
protection when operating this unit. Wear a face or
dust mask if the operation is dusty.
•Wear heavy, long pants, boots, gloves and a long
sleeve shirt. Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, short
pants, sandals or go barefoot. Secure hair above
shoulder level.
•Use the unit only in daylight or good artificial light.
•Do not force unit. It will do the job better and with less
likelihood of injury at a rate for which it was designed.
•To reduce the risk of electrical shock, keep the pruner
from power lines or electrical wires.
•Use the right tool. Use this unit only as described in
this manual. Do not use for any job except that for
which is intended.
•Do not overreach. Always keep proper footing and
balance.
•Always hold the unit with both hands when operating.
Keep a firm grip on both the front and rear handle or
grips.
•Acoasting blade can cause injury while it continues
to moves after the unit is stopped. Maintain proper
control of the unit until the blade has completely
stopped moving.
•Keep hands, face, and feet at a distance from all
moving parts. Do not attempt to touch or stop the
blade when it is moving.
•Do not operate the unit faster than the speed
needed to prune. Do not run the unit at high speed
when not pruning.
•Always stop the unit when work is delayed or when
walking from one cutting location to another.
•If you strike or become entangled with a foreign object,
stop the engine immediately and check for damage.
Have any damage repaired before attempting further
operations. Do not operate unit with a bent, cracked or
dull blade. Discard blades that are bent, warped,
cracked or broken.
•Stop the unit IMMEDIATELY if you feel excessive
vibration. Vibration is a sign of trouble. Inspect
thoroughly for loose nuts, bolts or damage before
continuing. Repair or replace affected parts as
necessary.
•Stop and switch the unit to off for maintenance,
repair, or for changing add-ons attachments.
•Use only Genuine Factory Parts™ and accessories for
this unit. These are available from your authorized
service dealer. Use of any Genuine Factory Parts™ or
accessories could lead to serious injury to the user or
damage to the unit, and void your warranty.
OTHER SAFETY WARNINGS
•Allow the unit to cool before storing or transporting. Be
sure to secure the unit while transporting.
•Store the unit inside in a dry place, either locked up or
up high to prevent unauthorized use or damage. Keep
out of the reach of children.
•Never douse or squirt the unit with water or any other
liquid. Keep handles dry, clean and free from debris.
Clean after each use, see Cleaning and Storage
instructions.
•Keep these instructions. Refer to them often and use
them to instruct other users. If you loan someone this
unit, also loan them these instructions.
•Only qualified personnel should perform any repairs
or maintenance procedures that are not described
in this manual.
•Check shear bolts, engine mounting bolts and other
bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness to be
sure the equipment is in safe working condition.
•Always refer to the Operator’s Manual instructions for
important details if the unit is to be stored for an
extended period.
•Do not attempt to repair the machine unless you have
the proper tools, and instructions for disassembly and
repair of the machine.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
INSTALLING THE BLADE
1. Slide the blade cover past the end of the blade to
expose the hole for the pin.
2. Insert the blade through the end of the pruner
housing and install the blade over the pin (Fig. 1). The
blade teeth should face the foot side.
3. Install the blade clamp over the blade and pin. Install
the screw with lock washer and tighten securely with
the allen wrench (Fig. 2).
4. Before operating unit, remove blade cover
completely (Fig. 3). Store away for later use.
INSTALLING AND ADJUSTING THE SHOULDER
HARNESS
1. Push the strap through the center of the buckle.
2. Pull the strap over the cross bar and down through
the slot in the buckle (Fig. 4).
3. Snap it on to the support fitting (Fig. 5).
4. While standing in the operating position adjust length
to fit the operator’s size.
•Lengthen the harness by pulling down on the strap
and lifting the buckle end up (Fig. 6).
•Shorten the harness by pulling the strap back
through the buckle while holding the buckle (Fig. 6).

Installing the boom extension:
When using the boom extension, follow steps 1-3
under Installing the Attachment or Add-ons. Install the
extension to the power head, then repeat the steps for
installing the pruner attachment to the extension.
Check Flex Shaft Engagement Prior to Using
1. Start the unit.
2. Briefly engage and release the trigger.
3. Check that add-on is operating.
4. If the add-on is not operating, remove add-on and
repeat steps for installing the add-on.
5. Recheck operation of add-on attachment.
4. Turn the knob clockwise to tighten (Fig. 9).

Removing the add-on:
1. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen (Fig. 7).
2. Press and hold the release button (Fig. 7).
3. While firmly holding the upper shaft housing, pull the
tree pruner attachment out of the coupler (Fig. 8).
Installing the add-on:
NOTE: To make installing or removing the add-on
easier, place the unit on the ground or on a
work bench.
1. Turn knob counterclockwise to loosen (Fig. 7).
2. While firmly holding the add-on, push it straight into
the coupler (Fig. 8).
3. While firmly holding the add-on, push it straight into
the coupler (Fig. 2).

CAUTION: The tree pruner add-on with the
coupler system is to be used in the primary
hole only. Using the wrong hole could lead to
personal injury or damage to the unit.
CAUTION: Lock the release button in the
primary hole (Fig. 8) and securely tighten the
knob before operating this unit.

OPERATING THE PRUNER
Before operating the unit, stand in the operating position
(Figs. 10 & 11). Check for the following:
•The operator is wearing a face shield, head protection
and proper clothing.
•Harness is adjusted to proper position.
•The handle is adjusted to provide the best grip.
•The operator has a firm grip on both the throttle grip
and handle. PRUNING TIPS
Why Prune?
Trees need to be trained. If they are not, they may grow
into a tangled and potentially dangerous area of the yard.
Pruning is useful for sizing, shaping, removing broken
branches and maintaining the health of the tree.
When to Prune?
Pruning can be done at any time during the year. But, the
best time is during the dormant (winter) season.
What to Look for?
Finding problem areas in a tree can be difficult. Look for
and remove:
•
Dead or dying branches. Cut them back to a healthy branch
or trunk because they may carry insects or diseases.
•Branch stubs. These occur when a prior pruning was
done incorrectly or if a branch broke off during a storm.
Cut the stubs back to the closest healthy branch or trunk.
•Future growth. If a tree limb is growing towards a fence
or building, remove it early. The older the tree, the
longer it takes for cutting wounds to heal.
How to Prune Correctly
•Don’t cause damage to the trunk bark by cutting too
close to the trunk.
•Cut the branch so that the wound is as small as possible.
•Don’t leave a long branch stub. It can lead to rot or
insect infestation.
•
Use a sharp blade to make cuts that are clean and smooth.
1. When operating the pruner, rest the foot of the pruner
against the tree limb that is being cut (Fig. 12).
2. Make the first cut one (1) foot (30.5 cm) from where
the final cut will be (Fig. 13).
3. Cut to the outside of the branch collar to avoid
damage to the tree (Fig. 14)

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
PRUNER BLADE REPLACEMENT
Replacing the Blade
Replace the blade if:
•it is missing teeth, dull, bent or damaged.
•you are required to force the moving blade through
wood.
•the engine slows excessively while cutting.
•every one (1) hour (accumulative) of actual cutting time.
1. Install the blade cover on the blade.
2. Remove the blade clamp screw, lock washer and
blade clamp (Fig. 15).
3. Reinstall the blade following the steps under
Installing the Blade in the assembly section.
Cleaning the Blade
•Clean the blade after each use to remove pitch, gum,
sap, etc.
•Clean the blade with commercially available saw blade
cleaners that are available at your local hardware store.
•Discard the blade if it is missing teeth, dull, bent or
damaged in any way.
•
Always install the blade cover on the blade when not in use.

PRUNER GEAR HOUSING
All internal parts are lubricated at the factory and require
no maintenance. Do not disassemble the pruner. Contact
an authorized service dealer for any internal repairs.
CLEANING
Use a small brush to clean off the outside of the unit.
Do not use strong detergents. Household cleaners that
contain aromatic oils such as pine and lemon, and
solvents such as kerosene, can damage plastic housing
or handle. Wipe off any moisture with a soft cloth.
STORAGE
•Store the unit inside in a dry place, either locked up or
up high to prevent unauthorized use or damage. Keep
out of the reach of children.

merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose,
applies after the applicable period of express written
warranty above as to the parts as identified. No other
express warranty or guaranty, whether written or oral,

product shall bind MTD. During the period of the
Warranty, the exclusive remedy is repair or replacement
of the product as set forth above. (Some states do not

MTD shall not be liable for incidental or consequential

The limited warranty set forth below is given by MTD
SOUTHWEST INC (“MTD”) with respect with new
merchandise purchased and used in the United States, its
possessions and territories.
MTD warrants this product against defects in material and
workmanship for a period of two (2) years commencing on
the date of original purchase and will, at its option, repair or
replace, free of charge, any part found to be defective in
material or workmanship. This limited warranty shall only
apply if this product has been operated and maintained in
accordance with the Operator’s Manual furnished with the
product, and has not been subject to misuse, abuse,

• IMPORTANTES CONSIGNES DE SÉCURITÉ •
•Arrêtez toujours le moteur et laissez-le refroidir avant de
remplir le réservoir de carburant. N'enlevez jamais le bouchon
du réservoir et n'ajoutez jamais de carburant pendant que le
moteur est chaud. Ne faites jamais fonctionner l'appareil sans
que le bouchon de carburant soit bien mis. Desserrez
lentement le bouchon afin de réduire la pression du réservoir.
•Mélangez et ajoutez le carburant dans un endroit bien aéré et
propre en plein air à l'abri des étincelles ou des flammes.
N'enlevez lentement le bouchon du réservoir d'essence
qu'après avoir arrêté le moteur. Ne fumez pas pendant le
remplissage ou le mélange de carburant. Essuyez
immédiatement tout déversement de carburant de l'appareil.
•Évitez de créer une source d'allumage pour le carburant
déversé. Ne démarrez pas le moteur avant que les vapeurs
de carburant ne se soient dissipées.
•Éloignez l'appareil d'au moins 9.1 m (30 pi) de la source de
ravitaillement en carburant avant de démarrer le moteur. Ne
fumez pas et éloignez toute source d'étincelles ou de flammes
vives du lieu de ravitaillement ou de fonctionnement de l'appareil.
•Évitez de démarrer ou de faire marcher l'appareil à l'intérieur
d'une pièce ou d'un bâtiment fermé. La respiration de
fumées d'échappement peut tuer. Ne faites fonctionner cet
appareil qu'à l'extérieur, dans un endroit bien aéré.

CONSIGNES DE SÉCURITÉ
•Inspectez régulièrement toutes les rallonges ainsi que la
connexion d’alimentation de l’appareil. Soyez à l’affût de signes
de détérioration, de coupures ou de fissures dans l’isolation.
Vérifiez aussi que les connexions ne sont pas endommagées.
Remplacez les cordons défectueux ou endommagés.
•Évitez que la tête d’entraînement de l’élagueuse ne se
déconnecte de la rallonge en utilisant une sangle de fixation
ou un connecteur de retenue de la fiche et de la prise, ou en
faisant un nœud comme indiqué ci-dessous :
•Évitez les lieux dangereux. N’utilisez jamais l’appareil dans
des conditions humides ou mouillées. L’humidité peut
provoquer l’électrocution.
•N’utilisez pas l'appareil sous la pluie. Ne l’utilisez pas à
proximité de l’eau.
•Ne manipulez pas la prise ou l'appareil les mains mouillées
ou debout sur une surface mouillée.
•N’approchez pas l'élagueuse des lignes ou fils électriques.
•Ne laissez pas l'appareil branché quand il ne sert pas, lors
d’un entretien ou d’un changement d’accessoires.
PENDANT L'UTILISATION
•Portez des lunettes de sécurité conformes aux normes
ANSI Z87.1 ainsi que des protège-oreilles durant l'utilisation
de l'appareil. Portez un masque facial ou antipoussières si
vous travaillez dans un lieu poussiéreux.
•Portez des pantalons épais et longs, des bottes et des gants.
Ne marchez pas pieds nus et ne portez pas les articles suivants
: vêtements lâches, bijoux, pantalons courts, sandales. Relevez
les cheveux au-dessus du niveau des épaules.
•N'utilisez l'appareil qu'en plein jour ou avec un bon éclairage
artificiel.
•Ne forcez pas ni ne surchargez l’appareil. Il accomplira un travail
de meilleure qualité, en présentant moins de dangers, si vous
respectez la cadence nominale pour laquelle il a été conçu.
•Pour réduire les risques de choc électrique, n'approchez pas
l'élagueuse des lignes ou fils électriques.
•Utilisez les outils appropriés. Utilisez l’appareil strictement
selon les consignes du manuel et pas pour des tâches autres
que celles pour lesquelles il a été conçu.
•Ne vous étirez pas. Tenez-vous toujours bien campé, en
position d'équilibre.
•Tenez toujours l'appareil des deux mains lorsque vous le faites
marcher. Agrippez fermement les poignées avant et arrière.
•La lame continue de tourner à vide une fois le moteur éteint
et peut donc causer des blessures graves. Gardez le contrôle
jusqu'à ce qu'elle se soit immobilisée.
•
Gardez les mains, le visage et les pieds éloignés des pièces mobiles.
N'essayez pas de toucher ni d'arrêter la lame en mouvement.
•Ne faites pas tourner le moteur à un régime excessif pour
l’élagage. Ne faites pas tourner l'appareil à haut régime si
vous ne faites pas d’élagage.
•Arrêtez toujours l’appareil si vous suspendez la coupe ou si
vous vous déplacez d'un lieu de travail vers un autre.
•Si vous heurtez ou happez un corps étranger, arrêtez
le moteur immédiatement et vérifiez que rien n'a été
endommagé. Réparez tout dommage éventuel avant de
poursuivre le travail. N'utilisez pas l'appareil si la lame est
tordue, fendillée ou émoussée. Jetez toute lame tordue,
fendillée ou émoussée.
•Arrêtez le moteur IMMÉDIATEMENT si vous ressentez une
vibration excessive car cela indique un problème. Vérifiez
soigneusement qu'il n'y a ni écrous ni boulons desserrés, ni
aucun dommage avant de continuer. Réparez ou remplacez
au besoin les pièces affectées.
•Arrêtez et éteignez l’appareil dans ces cas-ci : entretien,
réparation, changement d'accessoires ou autres.
•N’utilisez que des pièces de rechange et accessoires Genuine
Factory PartsMC pour cet appareil. Ils sont disponibles auprès
de votre concessionnaire agréé. L’utilisation de tous accessoires
ou pièces non-agréés peut entraîner des blessures graves à
l’utilisateur ou des dégâts à l’appareil, et annuler votre garantie.
AUTRES AVERTISSEMENTS DE SÉCURITÉ
•Laissez l’appareil refroidir avant de l'entreposer ou de le
transporter. Attachez bien l'appareil pendant le transport.
•Rangez l'appareil dans un lieu sec, verrouillé ou élevé pour
éviter les accidents ou une utilisation non autorisée.
Gardez hors de portée des enfants.
•Ne trempez et n'arrosez jamais l'appareil avec de l'eau ou
tout autre liquide. Gardez les poignées sèches, propres et
exemptes de débris. Nettoyez après chaque usage. Voir
Nettoyage et Entreposage.
•Conservez ces instructions. Consultez-les souvent et
servez-vous en pour instruire d'autres usagers. Si vous prêtez
l'appareil à quelqu'un, prêtez-lui également ces instructions.
•Les réparations ou les procédures d'entretien qui ne sont pas
décrites dans le manuel doivent être strictement confiées à
des techniciens qualifiés.
•Vérifiez à intervalles fréquents que les boulons des forces à
tondre et les boulons de montage du moteur et autres sont
bien serrés afin de vous assurer que l'équipement fonctionne
correctement.
•Reportez-vous toujours aux importantes instructions du
manuel de l'utilisateur si vous prévoyez d'entreposer
l'appareil pendant une durée prolongée.
•N'essayez pas de réparer l'appareil à moins de disposer des

INSTALLATION DE LA LAME
1. Glissez le couvercle de la lame au-delà de l'extrémité
de la lame pour exposer le trou de l'axe.
2. Insérez la lame dans l'extrémité du carter
d'élagueuse et installez-la sur l'axe (fig. 1). Les dents
de la lame doivent être du côté du pied.
3. Installez le serre-lame sur la lame et l'axe. Posez la
vis avec la rondelle de blocage et serrez-la bien avec
la clé Allen (fig. 2).
4. Avant de faire marcher l'appareil, retirez
complètement le couvercle de la lame (fig. 3).
Rangez-le pour un usage ultérieur.
INSTALLATION ET RÉGLAGE DU HARNAIS
D'ÉPAULE
1. Faites passer la bandoulière au centre de la boucle.
2. Tirez la bandoulière par-dessus la traverse et à
travers la fente de la boucle (fig. 4).
3. Accrochez-la au raccord de soutien (fig. 5).
4. Tenez-vous en position et réglez la longueur en
fonction de votre taille.
•Rallongez le harnais en tirant dessus et en tirant la
boucle vers le haut (fig. 6).
•Raccourcissez le harnais en le tirant en sens inverse à
travers la boucle tout en retenant la boucle (fig. 6).

Installation de l'extension de bras :
Lors de l'utilisation de l'extension de bras, suivez les
points 1 à 3 sous Installation de l'accessoire de coupe
ou autre. Installez l'extension sur la tête d'entraînement,
puis répétez les points concernant l’installation de
l'accessoire d'élagage sur l'extension.
Vérifiez que le bras flexible est bien engagé
avant l’utilisation
1. Démarrez l’appareil.
2. Appuyez brièvement sur la détente, puis relâchez-la.
3. Vérifiez le fonctionnement de l’accessoire.
4. S’il ne fonctionne pas, retirez-le et répétez la
procédure d’installation.
5. Vérifiez de nouveau le fonctionnement de
l’accessoire.

1. Dévissez le bouton vers la gauche (fig. 7).
2. Appuyez sur le bouton de déclenchement et
maintenez-le enfoncé (fig. 7).
3. Tenez fermement le corps de l'arbre supérieur et retirez
l'accessoire d’élagage du coupleur (fig. 8).
Installation de l'accessoire :
REMARQUE : pour faciliter l'installation ou le retrait
d'accessoires, placez l'appareil au sol ou sur un
établi.
1. Dévissez le bouton vers la gauche (fig. 7).
2. Tenez fermement l'accessoire et enfoncez-le tout
droit dans le coupleur (fig. 8).
3. Tenez fermement l'accessoire et enfoncez-le tout
