Before installing ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T in your car, we recommend that you
familiarise yourself with the system.
To do this, plug your ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T into a power socket (using the power
cord supplied) and charge it for four hours when charging for the first time.
You will notice that the indicator light in the top right-hand corner of your ViaMichelin
Navigation X-980T changes colour according to the battery power level:
• Orange indicator light: the ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T is charging.
• Green indicator light: the ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T is fully charged.
ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T has a battery life of approximately 3 hours depending on
use and the screen brightness maintained.
The device is fitted with a touch screen, and is designed to be operated with your fingertips
for greater convenience. You can also use the stylus supplied (on the back of the
ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T).

2
Although the ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T is ergonomically designed to be as intuitive
as possible, this manual contains precise instructions, together with tips and advice, for
each of the many functions that the device offers.
You will find other help and advice on the ViaMichelin Internet site dedicated to
navigation:
www.ViaMichelin.com/support

3
2. Installation in the vehicle
2.1. Installing the hardware in the vehicle
• Install the mounting system on the windscreen by applying pressure to the suction pad
and then turning the screw clockwise.
• Install your ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T by sliding it onto the mounting system as
shown (see the installation diagram provided).
• Start your vehicle.
• Connect the cigarette-lighter cable to the ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T mounting
system (socket on the right-hand side) and then to your vehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket.
• Check that the PND lock, located on the top of the device, is unlocked (pushed towards
the On/Off button) and turn on ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T.
2.2. Installing the software
ViaMichelin Navigation is a “Plug & Drive” solution: Simply insert the memory card
provided into the slot on the left-hand side of your PND (Personal Navigation Device) then
follow the installation instructions displayed on your screen (see Chapter 10: Installing the
SD card):
• Select the language for the menus
• Select the voice guidance language
• Validate enabling of voice synthesis announcing road signs, road names and traffic
information messages (optional).
• Voice guidance settings
• Select the distance unit
• Select map display
• Set the time
• Select map: “EUROPE.FDP [Storage Card]” or “Canaries.fdp [Storage Card]”
ViaMichelin Navigation is now ready to guide you!
Comment:
• Make sure that your SD is not in the “Lock” position, as this may prevent ViaMichelin
Navigation from functioning properly. (“Lock” position protects the contents of your SD

4
card, but this also prevents the ViaMichelin programs from saving the information
required for the software to run properly on the SD card).
• Your SD card contains the data needed to activate the DVD-ROM provided. To avoid any
problems with your SD card, we strongly recommend that you activate the DVD provided
in your pack before using ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T. You will then not only be able
to use ViaMichelin Navigation’s advanced functions with the available PC applications,
but also be able to restore the original contents of your SD card if necessary.
2.3. Activating the GPS
After connecting ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T and installing the software on the SD
card, go to the Main Menu, and click Options / Navigation / GPS. This will take you
directly to the page presenting GPS reception:
• The green “V”means that GPS is activated.
• “NO Fix / FIX: 2D/FIX: 3D” indicates better signal reception, and therefore more accurate
positioning.
• “SAT:” indicates the number of satellites used to calculate your position.
• The vertical bars show the satellites detected:
- grey the device is receiving satellite signals but is not using them to determine the
position (reception starting, signal not powerful enough, etc.).
- green the device is using the satellite signals to calculate your position.
• The numbers under the vertical bars give the satellite number.
• Coordinates: longitude and latitude calculated by the system.
• Direction arrow: shows the direction of travel between 2 position calculations by the
GPS.
When using ViaMichelin Navigation X-980T for the first time, we recommend you do so in
an open space in order to ensure the best possible satellite reception. Activating the GPS
system for the first time can take several minutes, depending on the surroundings and the
quality of the GPS signals.

5
2.4. Activating TMC

receive information on traffic conditions over the radio on your ViaMichelin Navigation X-
980T.
ViaMichelin provides you with real-time information on traffic conditions, so that you can
avoid traffic problems or simply be forewarned.
• You can access this option:
- From the Main Menu:click “Options”then “Navigation” / “Traffic Info”. This
option allows you to set up Traffic Information before
planning a journey.
- From Navigation Mode: click the navigation screen then “Options” and finally
“Traffic Info”. In this mode, you can enable or disable Traffic
Info while navigating a route.
-Click the button on the right of the screen showing the symbol of small cars:
