with you.
Key tag
Thekeynumberisontheplastictag.With
theaidofthenumber,a replacementkey
canbeorderedfroma Volkswagendealer.
Itmustthenbestatedifitis themainkeyor
thesecondkey.
Thetagshouldbekeptsafelyandseparate-
ly(in yourwalletforexample)sothatnoun-
authorizedpersoncanordera key.
Inadditiontotheplastictagtheremayalso
bea metaltagonwhichthereisa partofthe
vehicleidentificationnumber.Thistagisno
longerrequiredaftervehiclehasbeendeliv-
ered.

Central lockingsystem*
Withthissystemallthedoors,and- de-
pending onthepositionofthetailgateor
wingdoorlock- thetailgateorwingdoor
can alsobelockedandunlocked.
The systemisoperatedfromthe driver's
dooror front passengerdoor- from
outside withthekey,frominsidewiththe
locking knob.
Note
The centrallockingsystemcanonlyfunc-
tioncorrectlywhenthedriver'sand front
passenger doorsareproperly closed.
When locking, thelockingknobsonalldoors
mustmovedown.Iftheknobononedoor
does notmoveatanytime,openthedoor
concerned andcloseitproperly.
Attention
• When thelockingknobsinthe
driver's or front passengerdoors
arepressed down all other doors
arelocked automatically.
Sinceit would be difficult toren-
derassistance from theoutside
inanemergency, when thedoors
arelocked,childrenshould never
be left inthevehicleon their
own.
•Lockingthedoorscan prevent
them from burstingopeninan
extraordinary accidentsituation.
Lockeddoorsalso prevent per-
sons from entering thecarforci-
blye.g.at traffic lights. However,
inanemergency they make it
more difficult foroutside help to
openthedoors.
Notes:
Ifthecentrallockingsystemshoulddevelop
a fault,allthelockscanbeoperatednor-
mally, seenextpage.
The slidingdoorcanbesecuredorreleased
separately withthesafetycatch.
Slidingdoorand tailgate or wing
doorcanbelockedorunlockedseparately
withthekey.
To unlockthetailgateorwingdoorinsertkey
and turn ittoright(c).Holdinthisposition
and pressbuttonin.
Ifthekeyiswithdrawninthehorizontal posi-
tion(a),lockingofthetailgateorwingdoor
willbecontrolledbythecentrallocking sys-
temwhenitisclosedagain.
When thekeyiswithdrawninthevertical
position(b)andtailgateorwingdoor closed,
itwillbelockedallthetime.Thetailgatecan
thenonlybeunlockedwiththekey.

Slidingdoor
Fromoutside, theslidingdoorcanbe
locked andunlocked with thekey.
Theslidingdoorcanalsobelockedfromout-
side without usingthekey: Press locking
knobdownandclosedoor.
Frominside, theslidingdoorislockedby
pushingdownthelockingknob.
As longastheknobispresseddownthe
doorcannotbeopenedfrominsideorout-
side.
Whenthevehicleismoving,thedoormust
alwaysbeproperly closed, butwhencarry-
ingpassengersthelockingknobshouldbe
left intheupperpositionso that thedoorcan
beopenedfromoutsideinanemergency.
Note
Intheopenedpositiontheslidingdooris
heldopenbya retainer.
Child-proof catch
Whenthechild-proofcatchisengaged-
leverondoorlockdown- theinnerlockre-
lease leverisinoperative.Thedoorcanonly
beopenedfromoutside with thelocking
knobintheupposition.

Tailgate
To open thetailgatewhenkeyslotishori-
zontal, pullcontrolbehindfingerstripontail-
gateand lift tailgate.
To open from inside
On theinsideofthetailgatethereis,de-
pendingonmodel,eitheranopeninglever
oran emergencylockreleasewhichcanbe
reached througha holeinthetrim.
This makesitpossibleforvehicleoccupants
toleavethevehicleviathetailgateinan
emergency.
Child proof lock*
Vehicles with an openingleverontheinside
ofthetailgateare fitted with a childproof
lock.
Whenthechildproofcatchisengaged-
leveronlockmoveddown- theinnerlever
is blocked.Thetailgatecanthenonlybe
openedfromoutside.
Toclose tailgate pullitdownandslamit
togently.
To makethetailgateeasiertopulldown
thereisa loopontheinside.
Attention
• After closingthe tailgate al-
ways pull uponitto make sure
that itis properly closed- other-
wise itcould open suddenly
when vehicle ismoving, even
though thekeyhas been turned
inlock.
•The tailgate must always be
fully closed when vehicle is mov-
ing, otherwise exhaust gas will
be drawn into the vehicle in-
terior!

prox.90°)bycheckstraps.
Toopenthedoorsfurtherthecheckstrap

gageagainautomatically.

Mechanical windows
The windowsareopenedandclosed with
crank-handles fitted inthedoor trim panels.
Electric windows*
Electric windowsofferthefollowing com-
fort facilities:
•Single-touchopeningfordriver'sand
front passenger'sdoorwindows
•Single-touchclosingofdriver'sdoorwin-
dow
The windowsfunction with theignition
switchedon.Ifthedriver'sdoorisnot
opened afterswitchingofftheignition,the
windowscanstillbeoperatedforaboutone
hour.Apartfromthis,thewindowscanal-
ways functionwhenthedriver'sdooris
open. Forsafetyreasons,thesingle-touch
closing ofthedriver'sdoorwindowonly
functionswhentheignitionison.

can alsobeopenedandclosedfromthe
driver'sdoor.

All windowscanbeopenedautomatically
bytouchingthelowerpartoftheappropri-
ateswitch.Ifmorethanonewindowistobe
opened atthesametime,thisisdoneauto-
matically,oneaftertheother,intheselected
sequence.
Iftheappropriateswitchistappedonce
again, thewindowwillstopimmediately.
All windowscanbeclosedbypressingthe
upperpartoftheappropriateswitch.To
close thedriver'sdoorwindow,whenthe
ignitionisswitchedon,itissufficientto
touchtheswitch.Iftheswitchistouched
again, thewindowstopsmovingimmedi-
ately.
Attention
•Be careful when closingthe
windows!
Carelessor uncontrolled closing
ofthe windows cancausein-
juries.
Therefore when leaving theve-
hicle, always take the ignition
key with you.The electric win-
dows are then only putoutofac-
tion ifthe driver's doorisopened
andclosedagain.Assoonasthe
driver's doorisopenedagain,the
windows canonce again func-
tion.

Anti-dazzle inside mirror
Thelever onthe loweredge ofthe mirror
should be pointingforwardswhen the basic
setting is made.
To setthe anti-dazzleposition,pulllever to
therear.
Outsidemirror
Theoutsidemirrorshould be adjusted so
that theside of yourownvehiclecan just be
seen. Thissettingensuresthebestpossible
field of view,and in addition it serves asan
instantcheck onthe mirrorsetting.
Normaloutsidemirrors are adjusted by
pressing the edge ofthe mirrorsurface in
themirrorhousing.

Electrically adjustable mirrors*are
set by moving the knob inthe driver'sdoor
trim.
Turning the knobfrom Lto R switches con-
trol from left to right mirror.
Ifthe electricalcontrol ofthe mirrorfails at
anytime the mirrorscan be adjustedman-
ually by pressing onthe edge ofthe mirror
surface.

smaller. Thesemirrorsmakeitdifficultto
estimatehowfarawaya followingvehicle

Asphericaloutermirrorshavea mirror
surface with differentcurvature.Thiswide-
angle mirrorincreasestheareaofvision
even moresothanconventionalconvex
mirrors.Theirusefulnessisalsolimited
whenjudgingthedistancetovehiclesap-
proachingfrombehind.
Mirrorheating *
The electricallyoperatedoutsidemirrorsare
heatedaslongastheheatedrearwindow
is switchedon.
Foldingoutsidemirrors in
The outsidemirrorscanbefoldedin.
When foldedinthemirrorsareheldby a det-
ent.
To foldout again, pressmirrorintowardsve-

that the fingers arenot trapped
between mirror and bracket -

Notes
•Beforeputtingthevehiclethroughanau-
tomaticwashingplant,themirrorsshould
be foldedintopreventthembecomingdam-
aged.
•Theseremarksapplyonlytovehicles
with normaloutsidemirrors.Mirrorsonex-
tendedarmscanalsobefoldedinbutthey
have nodetent.

Seat belts
CONTROLSANDEQUIPMENT
Ithas been proven that seat belts
give good protection inaccidents.In
most countries therefore the wear-
ingof seat belts is required bylaw.
Attention
The belts shouldbeputon before
every journey - even in town
traffic. This applies alsotothe
rear seats.
Pregnant women tooshouldal-
ways wear a seat belt.
The routing ofthe belt isof major
importance tothe protective ef-
fect ofthe belt. Howthe belt
shouldbe worn isdescribedon
the next pages.
General notes
•The belt must notbe twisted.
•Twopersons (including children)
mustneverbesecured with onebelt.Itis
particularlydangeroustoputthebeltround
a childsittingona personslap.
•Thebeltshouldnotbewornoverhardor
breakable articles(glasses,ballpens,key
rings, pipes,etc.)becausethiscancausein-
jury tothebody.
• Loose, bulkyclothing(e.g.overcoats
over jackets)affectsthefitandfunctionof
thebelts.
•Thebeltmustnotbejammedanywhere
orrubonanysharpedges.
•Thelocktonguemayonlybeinserted
intothelockpartbelongingtotheappropri-
ateseatotherwise,theprotectiveeffectis
impaired.

Three-point inertia reel belts
The inertiareelbeltgivescompletefreedom
ofmovementwhenpulledslowly.Sudden
brakinghoweverwillcausethebelttolock.
The mechanismwillalsolockthebeltwhen
accelerating, drivingdownsteepgradients
orcornering.
Putting belt on
Pull thetongueslowlyandsmoothlyacross
thechestandhipsandpushitintothelock
part fitted ontheseatuntilthetongueen-
gages audibly(pulltocheck).
Theshoulder part of belt must run
roughly acrossthe centre ofthe
shoulderas shown - onnoaccount
against the neck - andbe firmly in
contact with thebody.
Thebackrestsofthe front seats
must notbeinclinedtoofartothe
rear, otherwise the belts areno
longer fully effective.
Withtheaidofthe belt height adjust-
ment theroutingofthe front seatshoulder
beltcanbesettofitthebodyproperly.
•Toadjust,pushbutton with relay fitting

Safety for children
Children under 12 years ofage
should normally travel onthe rear
seat1>(Caravelle, Kombi, Double-
cab). Depending upon their age,
height and weight, they must bepro-
tected with either a child restraint
system orthe seat belt provided.
A childmayalsooccupythe front passenger
seat iftherestraintsystemusedhasbeen
expressly approvedforthispurposebythe
manufacturer.Oneshouldbearinmind
however that theyaregenerallysaferonthe
rearseat.
Onno account should children - or
babies travel onan adult's lap.
•Babiesuptoabout9 monthsold/10kg
arebestprotected,inan accident, with a
safetyseator a specialsafetycarrier.
•Experiencehasshown that babiesand
small childrenuptoabout3 years/18kgare
bestprotectedinchildseatsorsafety
carrierswheretheycanlieorsitfacingthe
rearofthecar.
•Childrenuptoabout7yearsofage/25kg,
dependingontheirheight,aresafestwhen
secured ina childseatorbya safetyseat
cushion.
•Childrenoverabout7 yearsofagemay
use thethreepointbeltsortwopointbelts
providedontherearseats.Itisimportantto
ensure that thediagonalpartofthebelt fits
overthecentreoftheshoulder- anddoes
not make contact with the neck. The
lappartofthebeltmustpassacrossthe pel-
vis andnot over thechild'sstomach.
Ifthisisnotsoa safetycushionmustbe
used toraisetheseatingposition.
Whenusingthebeltthesection"Seat
belts"shouldalsobenoted.
Notethefollowingpointswhenpurchasing,
installingandusinga childrestraintsystem:
•Forsafetyreasonsalwaysusea restraint
systemwhichconformstotheinternational
safetystandardECER 44.Restraint sys-
tems that canbeconnectedtotheseat
beltsprovidedinthecararerecommended.
•Onlyusechildseatsorsafetycarriersof
thetypewhichhavea large, flat areain con-
tact with thecar'sseatupholstery.Child
seats whichhavefeetortubularframesand
no flat basecaneasilypenetrate into the
car's upholstery,andarethereforenotso
safe.
•Werecommend that childrestraint sys-
temsfromthegenuineaccessorypro-
grammeoftheVolkswagendealersare
used. Hereunderthename"Bobsy"re-
straintsystemsforallagegroupsareof-
fered21. Thesesystems fulfil alltherequire-
mentsmentionedandoverandabovethis,
havebeendevelopedandtestedbyusfor
use inVolkswagenvehicles.
•Specialcaremustbetakenifchildre-
straintsystemsareusedwhicharebolted
onatthesamepointasthebeltsprovided
inthevehicle.Onemustensure that thebolt
is longenoughso that the full lengthofthe
threadedholeisutilizedandtightenedtoa
torqueof30Nm
Furthermore,oneshouldensure that the
beltitselfcannotbecomedamagedby
sharpedgedbucklesetc.
•Forthe installation anduse,at-
tention must be paid tothe legal
regulations andthe instructions of
the restraint system manufacturer.
