POSITIONING THE 2080
MODELS 2180 AND 3180
WIDE DISPERSION
People w o use loudspeakers for public entertainment often put t em ig up on
walls or near to a ceiling. T e result is a dull, unexciting sound wit no detail. T is
is because t e sound absorption of t e furnis ing and t e crowd of people moving
around soaks up t e ig notes.
Some loudspeaker suppliers get round t is problem by using a product wit too
muc treble, often wit painful results. Ot ers try to bounce t e sound off t e
walls or ot er reflecting surfaces. T ey ope t at t is will make a uniform sound
all over t e room. You can not guarantee t is. All rooms ave different amounts of
sound absorption in different places. You will lose stereo information by spreading
t e sound around in t is way.
T e W arfedale 2180
and 3180 enables you
to direct t e sound to
w ere t e people are.
Conventional
loudspeakers produce
a narrow beam of
sound at ig
frequencies. Anyone
moving around in t e
room will move in and
out of t is beam, and
will find t e sound varying in detail. T e 2180 and 3180 produces a muc wider
area of coverage (figure 1) using tec niques pioneered by W arfedale more t an
25 years ago.

CONNECTIONS AND PHASING
Use twin flex wit a rib or coloured stripe to identify t e positive wire. T e current
rating s ould be 10 amps minimum. T e speakers are fitted wit spring
connectors to accept bare wire ends t at can be inserted into t e oles and
clamped. Be careful to trim away any loose strands to avoid s orting t e amplifier
output. Connect t e wire wit t e stripe or rib to t e red (or +) terminal for bot
amplifier and loudspeaker for eac c annel.
To test t e p asing of a stereo pair of loudspeakers switc t e amplifier to mono
if possible and play some music, listening to t e bass. If you ave wired one
speaker ‘out of p ase’ t e bass will sound weak and ill-defined. C eck your
connections and reverse t e connections to one speaker only. Refer to figure 4
below w en making multiple loudspeaker connections.
WIRING INSTRUCTIONS
T ere is a special terminal ousing on t e back of t e 2080 loudspeakers in
w ic t e Green terminals are not connected internally. To connect t e
loudspeakers as multiple stereo pairs, as s own in figure 4, proceed as follows:
To place adjacent units in parallel use two link-bars G to B and G to R.
To place adjacent units in series use one link bar G to G.
For normal stereo connection use no links.
If you ave wired up more t an one stereo pair you will need to c eck t e
p asing of eac pair separately.
AVOIDING BURN OUT
It is easy to damage loudspeakers by over-driving. T is appens w en you turn
t e volume control up too far, causing distortion. If t at appens, turn down t e
volume before you do any damage. It is more likely to appen if using an
amplifier wit too small a power rating for t e combination of room size and
loudspeakers. T ere are two remedies:
A. Use a bigger amplifier (but with an output not greater than the
power rating of the speakers).
B. Use more speakers (in series-parallel arrangement, keeping the
resultant impedance 4 to 8 ohms).
Note for eac amplifier c annel:
2 speakers in parallel = 2 o ms - t is is too low.
2 speakers in series = 8 o ms
4 speakers in series-parallel = 4 o ms

Connection
T e 2080 and 2180 loudspeaker are packed wit bracket (a) and t e
3180 loudspeakers are packed wit bracket (b). T is steel bracket
allows t e speaker to be fixed at an angle, eit er in a vertical or
orizontal position. Mounting t e bracket vertically and flus to t e wall
allows t e speaker to be rotated left to rig t (see figure 2). Mounting t e
bracket orizontally and flus to t e wall allows upward and downward
tilting of t e speaker (see figure 3).
