It is your personal responsibility and obligations to be sure your microwave oven:
l Has been installed where it is protected from the weather. The microwave oven
should be at a temperature above 50°F (10°C) for proper operation.
l Has been installed on a surface strong enough to support its weight.
l Has been properly connected to electrical supply and grounded. (See
“Installation Instructions:‘)
l Is not used by children or anyone unable to operate it properly.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Microwave ovens have been thoroughly tested for safe and efficient
operation. However, as with any appliance, there are special installation and
safety precautions which must be followed to ensure safe and satisfactory
operation and prevent damage to the unit.
1. Read all instructions before using
appliance.
2. Read and follow the specific “PRECAU-
TIONS TO AVOID POSSIBLE EXPOSURETO
EXCESSIVE MICROWAVE ENERGY” found
on page 3.
3. Thisappliance must be grounded. Con-
nected to only properly grounded outlets.
See “GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS”found in
the “INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTiONSl
4. Install or locate this appliance only in
accordance with the separately provided
“INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS.”
5. Some products such as whole eggs and
sealed containers - for example, closed
glass jars - may explode and should not
be heated in this oven.
6. Use this appliance only for its intended
use as described in this manual.
7. As with any appliance, close supervi-
sion is necessary when used by children.
8. Do not operate this appliance if it has a
damaged cord or plug, if it is not working
properly, or if it has been damaged or
dropped. Electric shock, fire or other haz-
ards may result.
9. This appliance should be serviced only
by qualified service personnel. Call a
Whirlpool authorized TECH-CARE@Service
Company for examination, repair or
adjustment.
10. Do not cover or block any opening on
the appliance, for fire may result.
11. Do not use outdoors for damage to the
oven or electric shock may result.
12. Do not immerse cord or plug in water for
electric shock may result.
13. Keep cord away from heated surfaces
for electric shock may result.
14. Do not let cord hang over edge of table
or counter for electric shock may result.

16. To reduce the risk of fire in the oven
cavity:
a. Do not overcook food. Carefully attend
appliance if paper, plastic, or other com-
bustible materials are placed inside the
oven to facilitate cooking. Paper can char
or burn, and some plastics can melt if used
when heating foods.
b. Remove wire twist-ties from paper or
plastic bags before placing bag in oven.
Cooking in metal containers can damage
the oven. So can containers with hidden
metal (twist-ties, foil-lining, staples, metallic
glaze or trim). Testdinnerware or cookware
before using. See page 26.
C.lf materials inside the oven should ignite,
keep oven door closed, turn oven off, and
disconnect the power cord, or shut off
power at the fuse or circuit breaker panel.
17. Read and follow “OPERATING SAFETY
PRECAUTIONS”starting on page 25.
18. Because of the automatic exhaust fan
feature, the following cautions must be
observed:
0. Do not leave the area when using your
cooktop at a high setting. Accidental fires
from boilovers or spattering on the surface
unit could spread, especially ifthe exhaust
fan is operating.
b. Do not allow grease and soil to build up
in the grease filter. Exhaust fan efficiency
will decrease and fire may result. Clean
often following the filter cleaning instruc-
tions on page 23.
C. Do not change the cooktop or oven
lights without turning the power off at the
main power supply. Electrical shock may
result.
d. Do not flame foods when operating the
exhaust fan. The fan, if operating, may
spread the flame and cause personal in-
jury or propem/ damage.

Using your microwave oven
Microwave ovencontrols
There are four parts in the control section: When you first plug in the oven, a tone sounds
-The Digital Display/Clock, and Signal Lights and the Display will be blank. If after you

Number pads Cooktop fan and light controls
The two switches at the bottom of the control
panel control the 2-Speed Exhaust Fan and the
fluorescent Cooktop Light.
Once you’ve touched a Command Pad
to tell the oven what you want it to do, you’ll
touch Number Pads to tell it...
- a time,
- a Cook Power,
-a food temperature.
Press the Exhaust Fan switch to the right for
HIGH, to the left for LOW and center it to turn OFF.
(NOTE: If the temperature gets too hot around
the microwave oven, the exhaust fan in the
vent hood will automatically turn on or
change to the HIGH setting to protect the
oven. It may stay on up to an hour to cool the
oven. When this occurs, the Exhaust Fan
switch will not turn the fan OFF.)
Press the Cooktop Light switch to the right to
turn the light ON. Press switch to the left to turn
it OFF.
Setting the clock
You can cook without setting the clock, but the Display will show a colon for 5 minutes
afterthe cooking is done, then go blank.
THIS HAPPENS...
DO THIS...
1. Touch CLOCK SET.
2. Touch CHANGE/CANCEL
Pad once.
The CLOCK Signal Light will come
on and the Display will show a colon.
The CLOCK Signal Light and the
colon will blink once.
The Display will show what numbers

the correct time of day.
The Display will show the time of
day, and the CLOCK Signal Light
will stay on.

If you have touched in an incorrect
time such os12:65, the Display will
go blank and you will hear a beep.

l What microwave energy is.
l How food is cooked by microwave energy.
l What affects cooking speed and cooking evenness.
l Safety tips.
l Utensils to use when cooking in a microwave oven.
l Cooking times for different foods.
Important things to remember to get the best cooking results.
l ALWAYS cook food for the minimum recommended cooking time. If necessary, add time
in one or two minute periods, then check for doneness to avoid overcooking the food.
l Stir,turn or rearrange the food being cooked about halfway through the cooking time
for most even doneness with all recipes.
l If a glass cover is not available, use waxpaper, paper towels or microwave approved
plastic wrap. Turn back a corner to vent steam during cooking.
l Most foods continue to cook after they are removed from the oven, Cover food and let
stand 5 to10 minutes depending on size and density.
Cooking at high cook power
The oven door can be opened any time during operation, The oven will automatically
stop cooking and maintain the time setting, for up to 5 minutes. Close the door and touch
STARTto continue cooking.

Changing the cooking time
You can change the cooking time during the cycle.
1. Touch CHANGE/CANCEL Pad once. (Note: The oven will go off and the Display will show a COlOn.)
2. Touch numbers for new time.
3. Touch START.
The COOK 1cycle will start cooking for the new time.
Cooking at lower cook powers
For best results, some recipes call for lower Cook Powers. The lower the Cook Power,
the slower the cooking. Each Number Pad on your microwave oven stands for a different
percentage of Cook Power (IO%, 50%, BO%, etc.). Many recipes in your MICRO MENUS@
Cookbook tell you, by name, which Cook Power to use. Recipes in other books and
magazines may tell you by number (5,6, 7,etc.).
The following chart gives you the percentage of Cook Power each Number Pad stands
for, and Cook Power name generally used.

-Touch CHANGE/CANCEL Pad once, then touch STARTif you wont to change a
lower Cook Power to HIGH.
Cooking in two cycles
For best results, some recipes call for one Cook Power for a certain length of time, and
another Cook Power for different length of time. Your microwave oven can be set to
change from one to another automatically.

Power Signal Light will go off. The
oven will cook in the Cook Power
you selected.
The Display will count down the
time to show you how much time is
left in the first Cook Cycle.
When the Cook1 cycle ends, you
will hear a beep and the oven will
automatically start cooking in the
Cook 2 cycle.
The COOK1 Signal Light will go off
and the COOK 2 Signal Light will
stay on.
The Display counts down the time
to show you how much time is left in
the Cook 2 cycle.
When the Cook 2 cycle ends, you
will hear 3 beeps. When the beep-
ing stops, the Display will show
the time of day.
Use Quick Defrost to thaw frozen food before cooking. For suggested times, see the guide on the
oven or the chart provided with the oven. (NOTE: Disregard the defrosting chart in the
MICRO MENUS@dookbook.)

Standing time
For best results, allow the food to stand for a while after defrosting. This helps equalize
the temperature of the food to provide more even cooking.
About the “QUICK DEFROST” Cycle
The microwave oven automatically divides the time set for the QUICK DEFROST Cycle
into four parts:
-Firstpart . . .._..._.__..._..............,_,,,___,.._. SO%offullCookPower;
-Second part 60% of full Cook Power;
-Third part . . . . . . . . . .._..__................_................... 40%offullCookPower;
- Fourth part, 20% of full Cook Power.
This automatic step-down in Cook Power helps defrost food quickly and completely with
less cooking.
Additional defrosting
1. Open the door.
2. Check the food with long-tined fork; if center area is hard frozen, set additional
defrosting time as follows:
-Close the oven door.
-Touch COOK I& 2 once.
-Touch Number Pads for the additional defrosting time you want.
-Touch COOK POWER.
-Touch “2” Number Pad for additional defrosting.
- Touch START.
Remember that standing time will further defrost the food.
Cooking automatically after defrosting
The controls can be set so the microwave oven goes automatically from defrosting to a
standing time and a cooking time.

Checking or changing cooking time or Cook Power settings
To double check settings:
1. Touch the command pads for the settings you want to check. The cooking time or Cook
Power settings you touched in for those pads will show in the Display.
2. Touch STARTto start the oven or to return the Display to show what the oven is doing.
To change the cooking times during operation:
I. Touch CHANGE/CANCEL Pad once. The oven will go off and the Display will show a
colon. Touch in the new cooking time, then touch START.The oven will continue cooking
for the new time.
To change Cook Powers during operation:
I. Touch COOK POWER Pad once, The Display will show the Cook Power for the Cook Cycle
in operation. Touch in the new Cook Power, then touch START.The oven will use the new
Cook Power for the rest of the Cook Cycle.
Cooking with the Temperature probe followed by Keep Warm
The Temperature Probe helps take the guesswork out of cooking roasts and casseroles.
See page 18 for helpful information on cooking different types of food.
After the food reaches the temperature you set, the oven will automatically keep the
food warm for up to 60 minutes. KEEP WARM will only operate if the Temperature Probe
is plugged in. It will continue to operate for 60 minutes or until it has been canceiled.
Do not hold food for more than an hour. The quality of the food will suffer with ex-
tended time.
DO THIS...

actual food temperature.
The Cook Power can be checked
by touching the COOK POWER Pad.
The Cook Power Signal Light will
come on and the Display will show
the Cook Power you selected.
Touch STARTto return the Display to
the actual food temperature.
When the probe senses the tem-
perature you selected, you will hear
3 beeps.When the beeping stops,
the oven will automatically go into
the Keep Warm Cycle.

When in Keep Warm, the Display
will show the time counting down
from 60 minutes.
When Keep Warm Cycle is over, you
will hear 3 beeps. When the beep-
ing stops, the Display will show the
time of day. The food can be re-
moved any time during the Keep
Warm cycle. After removing the
food, touch CHANGE/CANCEL Pad
twice to cancel Keep Warm.
(Note: The Temperature Probe
should always be unplugged and
removed with the food to prevent
the possibility of arcing.)
Temperature probe cooking tips
For casseroles, the tip
of the probe should be
inthecenterofthefood.
Stir foods when recom-
mended. Replace the
probe.
For liquids, balance the For roasts, the tip of the
probe on a wooden probe should be in the
spoon or spatula so the center of the largest
tip of the probe is in muscle, but not touching
the center of the liquid. fat or bone.

Hints for using the temperuture probe
DO...
l use hot pads when removing probe from
food or food from oven.
l stir foods during cooking when
recommended.
l stir soups, casseroles and drinks before
serving.
l cover roasts with foil and let stand a few
minutes after cooking. Remove foil if you de-
cide to cook it longer.
DON’T...
l let probe cable or probe touch any part of
the oven interior. Damage to the probe or the
oven could result.
l let probe touch foil (if used). Arcing could re-
sult. Foil can be kept away from probe with
wooden toothpicks. Remove foil if arcing
occurs.
0 use paper, plastic wrap or plastic containers.
Fire could result. They will be in the oven too
long.
l use probe in regular oven. Damage to probe
will result.
l force probe into frozen food. Damage to
probe will result.
Cleaning the probe
1. Remove probe from microwave oven using hot pads.
2. Wipe probe with a hot sudsy cloth. Use a plastic scouring pad to remove stubborn foods.
3. Do not clean the probe in the dishwasher.
Temperature probe cooking chart
Food cooked in a microwave oven will continue to cook during the standing time. Food
temperature will rise 5 to IO” during the standing time.
The following chart shows how to use Temperature Probe in different foods. Remove the
food and the Temperature Probe from the oven when it reaches the recommended
temperature setting, unless you wish the oven to hold the food in the Keep Warm Cycle.

When the cooking time ends, you
will hear 3 beeps. When the beep-
ing stops, the Display will show the

CAUTION:
Use foods that will not go bad or spoil while waiting for cooking to start. Avoid using with milk or
eggs, cream soups, cooked meats, poultry or fish, or any item with baking powder or yeast.
Smoked or frozen meats may be used; so can vegetables, fruits and casserole-type foods.
Any food that has to wait for cooking to start should be very cold or frozen before it is put in the
oven. MOST UNFROZEN FOODS SHOULD NEVER STAND AT ROOM TEMPERATURE MORE THAN TWO
HOURS BEFORECOOKING STARTS.
