Super DriveDock™
User’s Manual
Revised July 2, 2007
NOTE: The optional SpinBoost™ (4pin to 4pin power filter) may be used if your computer (especially
flat screen iMacs or PCI FireWire hosts) does not supply enough power to spin up the drive. It is
attached between the Super DriveDock and the disk drive. It will allow 5400RPM drives to spin up on
the iMac. 7200RPM drives require too much power and might not spin up, even with the SpinBoost.
Installation Instructions:
1. IMPORTANT: COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION. Super DriveDock in bus power mode will work with desktop
Macs, eMacs, PCI FireWire hosts, and older iMacs. It will also work with Titanium PowerBooks when the
PowerBook is attached to its AC adapter. Do not use with iBooks; they don’t supply enough power. Alternatively,
you can use the optional AC adapter for compatibility with all Macs, WiebeTech part number SDD-AC.
2. Drive must be jumpered as a Master (or in rare cases, Cable Select). Consult the instructions for your drive.
Super DriveDock will not read from drives configured as Slave. Some drives have two Master settings, one with
slave present and one with no Slave present. Try the “Master with NO Slave Present” setting first. Certain drives,
especially Western Digital, may require the drive to be jumpered to “Cable Select” when the “Master” setting does
not work.
3. Attach bottom plate to your 3.5 inch IDE hard drive. The purpose of the bottom plate is to provide protection
to your drive electronics. Attach the bottom plate to your drive. Use the four screws that are supplied. Attach a
rubber bumper to each corner. Extra bottom plates are available from WiebeTech.
4. Attach Super DriveDock to your drive. The forty pin IDE connector on the DriveDock matches exactly with your
drive. The connector has a polarization pin installed. Ensure that you have carefully lined it up. Firmly, but with
great care, attach the DriveDock to your drive. Attach the four-pin power connector from the DriveDock to the
drive.
5. Power. Power is received from the FireWire bus. Therefore, your host must provide power. Most six-pin
FireWire ports are powered. If your host does not provide enough power, you may use the optional AC adapter
for compatibility with all Macs. USE ONLY THE OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER SUPPLIED BY WIEBETECH, PART
NUMBER SDD-AC.
6. Access indicator. The LED furthest from the power connector is the access indicator. It will illuminate briefly
after the unit is powered up, indicating that the FireWire bridge has successfully established communication with
the drive. Thereafter, it will illuminate whenever the drive is accessed. If the access LED does not blink shortly
after drive spin up, it may indicate a problem with the drive or the Super DriveDock. If the access LED blinks at a
steady rate, this also may be indicative of a problem or an incorrectly jumpered drive. Contact technical support
for further assistance if necessary.
7. Usage with a Mac. Operation is plug and play under Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 and OS X. If using DriveDock with Mac
OS 9.0.4 or earlier, a driver may be required. (Not included – purchase from a third party such as InTech.) Check
operation on your computer first. Also check for Apple’s latest FireWire driver at www.apple.com/firewire.
8. Usage with a PC. Super DriveDock is plug and play with 98SE, 2K, ME, and XP. No drivers are needed.
9. FCC Compliance Statement. “This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the
following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any
interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.”
In the event that you experience Radio Frequency Interference, you should take the following steps to resolve the problem:
•Ensure that the bottom plate and case of your drive is grounded, either to the DriveDock case or to an Earth ground.
•Use a FireWire cable with RFI reducing ferrites on each end.
•Use a power supply with an RFI reducing ferrite approximately 5 inches from the DC plug.
•Emission suppression ferrites are available from Radio Shack, with a part number of 273-105.
