GETTING TO KNOW THE X1HA
-
EPC AMP
The Input jack socket
–
(music symbol). To connect to your portable
player use a short length 3.5mm (1/8
”
mini) stereo jack plug cable.
Plug one end of this cable into this jack and the other end into
the
headphone or line output jack of your portable player.
The Output jack socket
–
(headphone symbol). This is where you
plug in your high
-
end headphones. This socket accepts a standard
3.5mm (1/8
”
mini) stereo jack headphone plug. You may connect
headphone sets with impedance ranging from 16 ohm to 600 ohm.
Consult your headphone manufacturer specification chart to deter
mine
your headphone impedance.
The Volume control
-
The volume control consists of a high
performance, tight tolerance dual
-
gang potentiometer.
Adjust the headphone volume level to your desired listening lev
el
by rotating the volume control knob clockwise to increase and counter
clockwise to decrease the volume level.
The Gain control switch
–
This is a push button switch located on the
Front panel. When it is depressed it will latch in the on positi
on providing
a gain boost of +10dB. This function is useful for adapting the
X1AH
-
EPC
input to different audio sources as well as adapting to differen
t headphone
impedances.

WELCOME
Congratulations on your purchase of the Xenos 1HA
-
EPC Enhanced
Performance Portable Headphone Amplifier (X1HA
-
EPC) with Class AB
output configuration.
The X1HA
-
EPC will provide you with exceptional audiophile performance
for your high
-
end headphones when used with any playback
device that has a headphone or line output. The X1HA
-
EPC utilizes
high performance Texas Instruments OPA2134 op amps as buffers an
d
and a discrete matched pair bipolar transistor output stage in C
lass AB
configuration. Please consult the product data sheet and
specification sheet for additional technical details.
The X1HA
-
EPC includes a built in Lithium Ion (Li
-
Ion) battery pack, the
package is supplied with a world AC voltage Li
-
Ion charger which doubles
as an AC adapter for the X1HA
-
EPC amplifier.
Take time to read through this user guide as it will provide you
with
valuable information to help you ensure that you get the very be
st
performance from your Xenos 1HA
-
EPC amplifier.
Thank you for choosing Xenos Audio Systems
™.

When the gain switch is in the off position the amp input is cal

.
The Stereo Field Simulator control switch
–
This switch controls the
amplifier
’
s stereo channels. With this switch in the off position the amp
is in full stereo mode with left and right channels completely i
ndependent.
In the on position the SFS circuit is enabled.
The blue power LED
–
With the power turned on this LED has two
functions as follows: If the LED is on then battery level is goo
d; If the
LED is flashing at 1 second intervals the battery level is below
the
normal operating limit and the battery should be recharged.
The power switch
–
This is a small slide switch located on the rear
panel of the X1HA
-
EPC. Move this switch to the I position to switch
the amp on and to the 0 position to switch it off.
NOTE:
The Li
-
Ion
charger will continue to charge the internal Li
-
Ion battery irrespective
of the state of the power switch.
The DC charging jack
–
This jack socket is located on the rear panel
of the X1HA
-
EPC to the right of the battery charging symbol.
WARNING: Only use the provided Li
-
Ion charger to power the
X1HA
-
EPT amplifier. Any other AC adapter or charger may cause
irreversible damage to the Li
-
Ion battery pack and amplifier
electronics which will void the warranty.

CHARGING THE INTERNAL Li
-
Ion BATTERY
The X1HA
-
EPC is supplied standard with a built in, user replaceable
Li
-
Ion rechargeable battery pack. The Li
-
Ion battery is a 8.4V 2200mAH
type with a built in safety and protection circuit.
Under normal use, the battery will last about 16 hours on a full
charge
after which it must be recharged using ONLY the provided AC Li
-
Ion
charger. The Li
-
Ion charger will recharge the battery fully in about 4
hours. The Li
-
Ion charger has an LED indicator which glows red while
the battery is being charged and glows green once full charge ha
s been
reached. The DC plug of the charger is plugged into the DC charg
ing
jack on the rear of the X1HA
-
EPC and the charger is then plugged into
the wall AC outlet.
The Li
-
Ion charger will enable you to charge the battery while at
the same time allowing you to use the amplifier, in other words
it will also
power the amplifier. While using the charger in this mode the LE
D on the
charger will glow red even after the Li
-
Ion battery has reached
full charge. There is no concern here as the charger will automa
tically
stop charging the battery once it has reached it
’
s fully charged status.
When the battery is fully charged and the power switch on the
X1HA
-
EPC is turned off the LED on the Li
-
Ion charger will turn to green
indicating that the internal Li
-
Ion battery pack is fully charged.
The Li
-
Ion battery pack will
eventually wear out and will
need to be replaced.
We provide
replacement Li
-
Ion battery
pack kits including detailed
instructions for replacing the
battery. Alternatively you may
choose to return your
X1HA
-
EPC to Xenos Audio
Systems for battery service.
Please see our web site.

ADJUSTING SOUND LEVELS
Adjusting the volume level.
The volume control on the X1HA
-
EPC adjusts the signal level to the
output amplifier stage that drives the headphones. Before poweri
ng
up the X1HA
-
EPC, set the volume level on your playback device to
about 50% and start playing a music track. Turn on the X1HA
-
EPC,
place your head
-
phones on, now adjust the X1HA
-
EPC volume control
to a desired level. If need be increase the volume setting on yo
ur play
-
back device and adjust the volume setting on the X1HA
-
EPC accordingly
to reach your desired listening level.
WARNING: Extended exposure to high sound levels can cause
permanent hearing damage. Reduce volume level or discontinue
use if any discomfort is felt in your ears.
Adjusting equalisation (tone).
The X1HA
-
EPC has a flat frequency response, it does not have
any internal circuitry that adjusts or modifies the equalisation
levels.
However, most portable playback devices do include multiple
pre
-
set equalisation levels with some higher end devices also
incorpor
-
ating
custom equalisation controls. You may use the equalisation
controls included with your playback device to adjust the playba
ck
tone to suit your listening pleasure.
Adjusting the Gain setting
–
Depending on the signal source you are
using the gain control will provide the ability to adjust the X1
HA
-
EPC
overall gain to the most desirable level.
If you are connecting to a DVD / CD / AV receiver line output th
en setting
the gain switch on the X1HA
-
EPC to the off position will provide the most
suitable setting with medium impedance headphones of 32 ohm to
120 ohm. If your headphone impedance is 300 to 600 ohm then
depending on the headphone sensitivity it may be more appropriat
e to
set the gain switch to the on position.
If you are connecting the X1HA
-
EPC to the headphone jack of an audio
playback device then the most appropriate setting for the gain c
ontrol
switch would be the on position. This will provide a +10dB boost
in
overall amplifier gain and also provide more than adequate drive
levels
for headphone impedance loads from 16 ohm through to 600 ohms.
Stereo Field Simulator control
–
With the SFS switch in the on position,
the X1HA
-
EPC simulates a live stereo listening environment such as that
presented by stereo speakers placed in a room about 4 meters apa
rt and
the listener positioned in the centre about 5 meters from the sp
eakers.
The SFS circuit essentially eliminates the
“
super
-
stereo
”
effect that is
evident is a full stereo headphone listening mode. It effectivel
y simulates
a stereo room listening environment providing you with a more re
alistic
stereo field. The SFS works by feeding a portion of the left cha
nnel signal
into the right channel and vice versa through a frequency and de
lay profile
filter which has the effect of simulating the stereo listening r
oom field.
