Chapter 1: Description and Specifications
Introduction
The Zenith Data Systems Z-39 Terminal has two main components: a
video display and a detached keyboard. The two are connected with
a six-foot coiled cord. A Programmer's Data Information sheet and
an
RS-232 cable.are also included with the terminal.
This terminal provides many advanced functions many of which can
be programmed from the keyboard.
• Automatic self-check upon power up_
•
Four terminal emulation modes: Zenith, ANSI, Lear Siegler
ADM3A, and Hazeltine 1500.
• Programmable character attributes and scrolling regions.
• Advanced keyboard features: automatic key repeat, "N" key
rollover, status indicators, user-defined function keys,
and full cursor control keys.
• A detached, low-profile keyboard with
sculptured keys and a six-foot coiled cable.
• All features are selectable through the keyboard.
• Special attributes including character-by-character reverse
video, half-intensity, blinking, and underline capabilities.
• Cabinet with tilt and swivel video display.
• Support for the following character sets:

THE Z-39 SERVICE MANUAL
This manual is divided into the following parts.
INSTALLATION -- Describes the hardware and provides information
for configuration, interfacing, and power on.
OPERATION -- Describes the keys, functions, and modes of the
terminal.
THEORY OF OPERATION/CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION -- Describes the hardware
theory of operation with circuit descriptions.
DETAILED DISASSEMBLY -- Provides instructions for hardware
disassembly and reassembly to the circuit board level.
SERVICE INFORMATION -- Provides information on cleaning,
inspection, testing, and troubleshooting to the circuit board
level.
PARTS LIST -- Provides exploded views with part numbers, board
component views, and reference designator index to part numbers.
APPENDIX A
Provides foreign keyboard information.
APPENDIX B
Provides escape sequence information.
SCHEMATICS Detailed circuit board schematics.

The following list of test equipment is recommended for
servicing:
NOTE: Equivalent items of test equipment may be substituted.
• Oscilloscope -- DC to 100 HHz, dual-trace, triggered-sweep.
• Logic probe -- DC to 20 HHz, capable of detecting 10 ns single
pulses, and indicating logic one, logic zero, and high
impedance states. Heath Hodel IT-7410.
• Digital voltmeter -- High impedance input, zero to 1000 volts,
zero to one megohm. Heath Hodel SH-2215.
• Variable power supply -- Zero to 120 VAC, 3 amperes.
• Oscilloscope probe -- Low capacitance, adjustable from 15 pF to
50 pF, 4 ns rise time.
• Video monitor -- RGB color and monochrome composite wide band
monitor. Zenith Hodel ZVH-135.
• High voltage probe
Zero to 40 KV. Heath Hodel IH-5210.
