Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of a ZoomText
Large-Print Keyboard, with easy typing and quick
access to ZoomText (version 9.03 and later).
Your new ZoomText keyboard features large-print
keycaps that are easy to see, even in low light –
allowing for fast, accurate typing and reduced
eyestrain.
The ZoomText keyboard also includes twelve feature
keys that provide fast access to essential ZoomText
commands, Windows commands and opening a
program, webpage or document.
With the ZoomText feature keys you can…
Start ZoomText
Zoom in and out to any magnification level
Activate colour, pointer and cursor
enhancements
Launch ZoomText’s Web Finder
Toggle speech on and off
Activate typing echo
Launch ZoomText’s AppReader, DocReader and
SpeakIt tools

The ZoomText Large-Print Keyboard is the perfect
companion to ZoomText Magnifier and ZoomText
Magnifier/Reader (version 9.03 and later). When
used together, your
low-vision
workstation is

System Requirements
The following hardware and software is required to
use the ZoomText keyboard:
USB keyboard connection
Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, or XP
ZoomText 9.03 or later (to use the ZoomText
feature buttons)

Installing the Keyboard Software
Before you connect the ZoomText keyboard to your
system, ZoomText Magnifier or Magnifier/Reader
(version 9.03 and or later), and the ZoomText
keyboard software should be installed on your
system. These installations are required in order to
use the ZoomText feature keys.
To install ZoomText Magnifier or Magnifier/Reader,
refer to your ZoomText User’s Guide or Quick
Reference Guide. To install the ZoomText keyboard
software, follow the instructions provided below.
To install the keyboard software
1. Insert the ZoomText keyboard
software CD into the CD drive.
The Setup program will
start automatically.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions
to complete the installation.
If Setup does not start automatically
1. In the Windows Start menu, select Run...
2. Browse to your CD-ROM drive.
3. Select the Setup program and click Open.
4. Click OK in the Run dialog box.

Updating the Keyboard Software
To keep your ZoomText keyboard software up-to-
date with the latest fixes and enhancements, you
should periodically run the Check for Updates
command, located in the ZoomText Keyboard
program folder. The Check for Updates command
launches your web browser to the online keyboard
update service, which checks to see if you are
running the latest version of the ZoomText Keyboard
software. If an update is available, instructions
appear for downloading and installing the update.
To check for ZoomText keyboard updates
In the Windows Start menu, choose Programs
ZoomText Keyboard Other Check for
Updates.
Your web browser will open to the ZoomText
Keyboard updates web page. The web page will
indicate whether or not an update is available. If an
update is available, follow the instructions for
downloading and installing the update.
Note: An Internet connection is required to use this
feature.

Connecting the Keyboard
The ZoomText keyboard can be connected to your
computer through a USB port.
To connect to a USB Port
1. Plug the rectangular USB
connector located at the end
of the keyboard cable into
your computer’s rectangular
USB port.

Using the ZoomText Keyboard
The ZoomText keyboard is a standard size keys and
a standard layout, so adjusting to any differences
between your old keyboard and the ZoomText
keyboard should be quick and easy. The low-profile
design makes typing fast and comfortable. The
feature keys are also quick and easy to use, thanks to
their simple tactile layout and familiar labels.

Using the Feature Keys
The twelve feature keys (located across the top of the
keyboard) have three command layers that give you
quick access to the essential ZoomText commands
(layer 1), Windows commands (layer 2) and your
own user-defined commands (layer 3).
The ZoomText Commands layer provides one-
touch access to the most commonly used features
in ZoomText Magnifier and ZoomText
Magnifier/Reader. These commands are
instantly accessed by pressing the desired
feature key. The icons printed above the feature
keys represent the ZoomText commands that are
associated with each feature key. These
commands are described in the “ZoomText
Commands” tables on page 12. For complete
information on the ZoomText features associated
with these commands, refer to the ZoomText
User’s Guide or the ZoomText Help system.

The Windows commands layer provides fast
access to a variety of Windows commands,
including multimedia, Internet, email and more.
These commands are accessed by holding the
down the Shift key and pressing the desired
feature key. The icons printed below the feature
keys represent the Windows commands that are
associated with each feature key. These
commands are described in the “Windows
Commands” tables on page 14.
The User-defined Commands layer provide fast
access to your choice of ZoomText commands,
Windows commands, or program commands to
open a program, webpage or document. These
commands are accessed by holding the down the
Ctrl key and pressing the desired feature key.
For information on assigning user-defined
commands, see “ZoomText Keyboard Settings”
on page 16.

Using the Feature Keys with ZoomText
Magnifier
In the ZoomText commands layer, five of the feature
keys are assigned to speech and reading commands
that are not available in ZoomText Magnifier.
Therefore, when using the ZoomText keyboard with
ZoomText Magnifier, pressing these five keys in the
ZoomText commands layer will have no action.

ZoomText Commands
These ZoomText commands are accessed by pressing
the desired feature key.
Key
Description
Starts ZoomText. Also enables and disabled
ZoomText when ZoomText is running.
–
Increases ZoomText’s magnification level
(one level at a time).
+
Decreases ZoomText’s magnification level
(one level at a time).
Toggles ZoomText’s colour enhancements on
and off.
Toggles ZoomText’s mouse pointer
enhancements on and off.
Toggles ZoomText’s text cursor enhancements
on and off.
Opens the Web Finder.

The following feature keys are assigned to speech
and reading features that are only available in
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader.
Key
Description
Launches AppReader to read text within the
last active application.
Launches DocReader to read text from the last
active application.
Launches the SpeakIt tool allowing you to read
selected areas of the screen.
Toggles ZoomText’s typing echo on and off.
Turns speech output on and off.

Windows Commands
The Windows commands are accessed by holding
down the Shift key and pressing the desired feature
key.
Key
Description
Launches the default media player.
Toggles play and pause in the default media
player.
Moves to the previous track in the default
media player.
Moves to the next track in the default media
player.
Increases the volume.
Decreases the volume.
Mutes the volume.
Opens the My Computer applet.
Activates the default web browser’s search
tool.
Opens the default browser to the assigned
home page.

Launches the default email program.
Refreshes the current web page in the default
browser.

ZoomText Keyboard Settings
The ZoomText Keyboard Settings allow you to
assign commands for each feature key in the user-
defined command layer. The keyboard settings also
allow you to configure how the keyboard software
starts and appears on your system.
The ZoomText Keyboard Tray Icon
When the ZoomText keyboard software is running,
its program icon appears in the system tray (next to
the clock). Clicking on the tray icon will pop up a
menu that allows you to…
Open the ZoomText Keyboard Settings dialog.
Disable the ZoomText feature keys.
View program version information.
Open the ZoomText Keyboard Help system.

The ZoomText Keyboard Settings Dialog
The ZoomText Keyboard Settings dialog allows you
to examine the current feature key command
assignments and assign commands for each feature
key in the user-defined command layer—using the
Assign Key wizard. The Keyboard Settings dialog
also allows you to disable all of the feature keys and
hide the ZoomText keyboard tray icon.
To open the keyboard settings dialog
Do one of the following:
Click on the ZoomText keyboard icon in the
system tray and then select Open ZoomText
Keyboard from the tray menu.
In the Windows Start menu, choose
Programs ZoomText Keyboard ZoomText
Keyboard.
The ZoomText Keyboard Settings dialog appears.
