You need to start the device manager (right
click My Computer, select Properties.
Go to the Hardware Tab and click Device
Manager.
Open the LP and COM section. his gives you
the COM port number (in the example it is 13).

Page 13 of 39 R E6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAF .doc
4Quick Start Assembly
his section describes how to get an evaluation module up and running. For full OEM integration see
Section 7.
he kit generally comprises:
1.
he VC27U PCB
2.
An optical read head
3.
Optionally the 10 way read head cable, see Appendix C – Read Head Cable
4.
Optionally an USB interface cable (supplies power and signals), see Appendix B –
VC 7U USB Interface Cable
5.
Optionally a document guide and glass window, see Section 8
Depending on what you have ordered you may have all of these or some items. Items you do not have will need
to be made by yourself. As this is an OEM product it is expected that you would manufacture items 3 to 5 once
in full production of your product, however 3M can supply you these if required.
First ensure you have all the necessary components above (all items 1 to 5).
Take appropriate anti-static precautions. Failure to observe anti-static precautions
can lead to component failure or a significantly reduced operational life.
Locate the glass window into the document guide and then install the read head on to the guide using 2 M3 x
6mm screws (note screw length may vary depending on thickness of guide). he glass window should be
gripped in place by the read head.
The screw lengths should be selected so that only 3 mm of thread enters the read
head.

Page 14 of 39 R E6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAF .doc
Connect the 10 way read head cable to the read head and then to J2 of the VC27U as follows:
The read head will be damaged if the connector is reversed or misaligned.
he read head is marked with a red dot to indicate the pin 1 end of the header.
Connect the 3 wire cable from the read head to J4 of the VC27U. Note this connector only fits one way, with
the small lugs facing away from the PCB. he red wire must go to pin 1 of J4.
Connect the USB Interface Cable to J3 of the VC27U PCB. Note this connector only fits one way, with the
small lugs facing away from the PCB.
Connect the host connector of the USB Interface Cable to the PC and then install the drivers using the New
Hardware Found Wizard as described in section 3.4.
You should now be able to determine the COM port number as shown in section 3.5.
Check which protocol you have installed, usually this would be R E Native unless you have ordered an
alternative protocol. est the module using a test program described in section 5 below.
By default the serial port is set to 19200 baud, 7 data bits, even parity and 1 stop bit. his may be changed
using the jumper block J6 depending on the protocol installed.

Page 15 of 39 R E6701-OEM Integration Manual VC27U V1.03 DRAF .doc
5Test Programs
Assuming you have the R E Native protocol installed you need to use the sda6700 demonstration program:
You will need to check the com port of the USB virtual comm (see section 3.5) and entering that number in the
configuration (Comms tab -> Comm Port) and also check that Native is selected (Comms tab -> Operating
Mode). Set the communications mode Comms -> Config to Manual as follows:
he exact values will depend on the firmware protocol installed and the jumper settings. Note that for other
protocols the sda6700 program will not work and you should use HyperTerminal or a similar terminal
emulator if you do not have a test program. A number of test programs are installed in the resource kit
under:
C:\Program Files\R E\R E 6700 Resource Kit\Development\Examples

7OEM Integration
In order to integrate the 3M
M
R E6701-OEM Passport Reader Module into your equipment you need to
consider a number of design issues and ensure that your manufacturing process is appropriate. his section
helps you through some of these questions.
Having tested the Module in a standalone configuration and ensured its suitability the first task is to design a
document guide, see the next section for more detail. his will include the mounting of the read head to the
guide and the retaining of the glass window.
he mechanical mounting of the PCB is next – the key point being to keep the cable from J2 as short as
possible, see below for more information. Be careful to ensure that the 3 way head illumination cable reaches to
J4.
Design a USB to host cable to suit your requirements noting that this may need a ferrite(s) to reduce
radiated/conducted EMC emissions. Determine whether you wish to use a separate power input on J5 rather
than USB supplied power (see section 6).
he product then needs testing to your required standards. See “Appendix A – EMC Compliance
Techniques” for more information.
Ensure that your manufacturing process is aware of the ESD precautions required and that they use the correct
read heads with PCBs where that is an issue, more details below.
In summary assembly procedures, control of ESD, cabling and connector choices can all
contribute to significant improvements in product reliability and prevention of “in the
field” failures. hese recommendations will greatly reduce costs due to part failures and
provide increased end-user confidence in your product
.
7.1 Read Head Manufacturing Procedures
he read head is a compact electro-optical assembly with a 10-way dual row 0.1-inch pitch connector for the
camera assembly. In order to minimise the cost and size of the head, the camera is connected directly to these
pins.
The camera electronics are sensitive to damage from static electricity. It is
therefore essential that proper electro-static damage (ESD) control measures be
put in place when assembling the head into OEM equipment.
The read heads are supplied in anti-static packaging and should be unpacked as
close to the assembly area as possible.
Operators should wear anti-static wrist straps and assembly should take place at
a properly grounded anti-static environment.
