Introduction
The main benefit of a speed dome camera over stationary cameras is its ability to rotate on a
360 degree plane. Just like other network cameras, the speed dome camera can be viewed
and controlled remotely using the IP Utility or a Network Video Recorder (NVR).
But where should speed dome cameras be instlalled? Is there an installation height
requirement? Shoud I use the AC power adapter or use a Power over Ethernet (PoE) injector?
All these questions and more will be answered in this article.
Where Can Speed Dome Cameras Be Installed?
Speed dome cameras can be installed in the following scenarios:
1. On vertical poles like street lights
2. On horizontal poles like overhead pole beams used in airports, etc.
3. On the wall of buildings using dedicated wall mounts
4. On the rooftop of buildings using parapet mounts
5. On corner walls of buildings

How High Should Speed Dome Cameras Be Installed?
There is no height limitation on installation. Therefore, speed dome cameras are
recommended to be mounted as high as possible and as long as there are no obstacles
blocking the view. If some objects, such as trees, buildings, etc. are obstructing the view,
mount the camera even higher.
Remember that a speed dome camera moves and sees things at 360° from its position plus its
powerful zoom capabilities. So, the higher its position is, the more that it can see.
Anything below the camera within its 360° range can be seen. But take note, that the camera
lens does not go up the camera, so it does not see anything above the camera.
Note that adding unnecessary distance from the scene you want to monitor is not advisable
either.
The illustration below shows the target area covered based on the camera installation location.
Pan, tilt, and zoom the speed dome camera to view the target scene below the camera.
Anything above the camera cannot be seen.

Based on Figure 1, to view the higher level highway, the camera must be mounted on a higher
location, such as the illustration below.

How to Power Up Speed Dome Cameras?
ACTi speed dome cameras can be powered up using Power over Ethernet (PoE) swithces or
high PoE injectors for simplified installations. An AC power adapter also comes bundled with
speed dome cameras for applications that do not readily have PoE equipments.
Option 1
For simple installation, use PoE switch or injector to power up the PTZ camera. With this
option, all you have to do is connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of the
camera and the other end to the PoE switch or injector. The switch or injector can be placed
inside the building or far away from the camera (as long as the distance between the camera
and the switch is within 100 meters). Make sure also that the Ethernet connection on the
camera side is waterproof by using the bundled cable or conduit gland. Please refer to the
camera hardware manual for detailed instructions.
Option 2
If PoE is not available, use the bundled AC power adapter that came with the speed dome
camera. With this option, you have to purchase an additional mounting accessory, which is the
Junction Box, to house the power adapter. Regardless on how you mount the camera using
ACTi’s mounting accessories, the junction box is compatible to all these mounts, like pendant
mount, pole mount, corner mount, wall mount, etc.

Other Must Do’s
To ensure you get optimum camera performance, do the following:
Mount on stable locations to avoid image vibration caused by unstable poles or wind
Make sure the location, whether it is a wall, pole, etc., can bear more than the weight
of the speed dome camera plus its mounting accessories.
Make sure there are no obstacles, such as trees, and other object, blocking the target
view.
Make sure all screws attaching the camera to the mounting accessories are tightly
attached.
Make sure the cable connections are protected from water or other environmental
factors, by using the bundled cable or conduit gland connectors.
Make sure additional accessories such as digital input devices, audio cables are
protected from water or other environmental factors, by housing them inside the
junction box.
