CleaningProceduresFor FiberOpticCables:
FiberOpticconnectorsaresensitivetoall typesofdirtandskinoil.Becausethefibersizeissosmall,the
slightestspecofdirtcancausesignalblockageandattenuationtoaconnectorend. Alwaysavoidtouching
theend oftheferrule.Alwayskeepunconnectedconnectorscoveredwithdustcaps.Thiswillensurethat
thefiberdoesnotbecomescratchedordirtdoesnotsettleontheendoftheferrule.
Whencleaningtheconnectoruseonlylintfreepadsor isopropylalcoholwipes.Somesolventsmayattack
epoxy orleaveresidue. All AdvancedFiber SolutiontestkitcomeprovidedwithTexwipesAlcoPads.Ifa
connectorsurface cannotbecleanedwithaAlcoPadbecauseitisinabulkheadoranactivedevice
mountusecannedair.Cannedairsometimesleaveresidueifnotusedwithcaution.Sprayfor3/5seconds
toensurethatpropellantisremovedfromthenozzle.
Otheropticalsurfaces,likethemeterdetectorshouldalsobecleanedwithaTexwipewhennecessary.
Afteraquickrub withtheTexwipeletthesurface air drybeforereplacingtheadaptorbackonthedetector
housing.
Warning:Neverlookorstaredirectlyintoafiberopticcable.
Opticalradiation thatisharmfultotheeyemaybepresent.Thismayresultinpermanenteyedamage.
Whilethechancesofsuchanoccurrence taking place isveryunlikelyitisbestadvisedtoalwaysusethe
fiberOpticpowermeterwhendetecting light.

Thisisthereferencepowerreading thatiscreatedbyplacing alaunchcablebetweenthemeter and
thesource.
Procedure:
1. Attachlaunchcabletotheoutputof thesourceandinputofmeter.
2. MakesuretheoutputpowerlevelfromtheSourceisover-30dBm.
3. Withmeterin"dB"mode,hitthezeroreference key.Whenthemeter zerosoutasillustratedin
theabovesetupthelaunchreferencepowerhasbeenstoredandtheuserisnowreadytostart
testing cables.
4. Oncethezeroreferencepowerhasbeenset,donotremovethelaunchcablefromtheSource as
reattachingit maychangetheoutputpowerlevel.
