ZoomText USB Setup Guide
Computers have become ever-present in our lives, and so has our
need to access and use computers everywhere we go… at home, at
school, at work, even in libraries and other public facilities. To make
ZoomText readily available to individuals that need it, Ai Squared
has introduced "ZoomText USB" –ZoomText on a USB flash drive
that users can conveniently carry with them and use at any time.
With ZoomText USB, you can install and run ZoomText whenever
and wherever you need to (with administrative privileges), without
having to activate each installation of the software—because the
ZoomText USB drive serves as both the installation media and a
license dongle. So you can install ZoomText onto any number of
computers where you need to run ZoomText, without activating the
installation. And then, when you need to run ZoomText on one of the
computers, plug in the ZoomText USB drive and start ZoomText.
ZoomText will start and run as long as the USB drive remains
attached to the computer.
ZoomText USB is available for ZoomText Magnifier and ZoomText
Magnifier/Reader. ZoomText Magnifier is delivered on a green USB
drive, while ZoomText Magnifier/Reader is delivered on a blue USB
drive.
About this Setup Guide
The ZoomText USB Setup Guide provides instructions that are
specific to the USB version of ZoomText 11 Magnifier and
Magnifier/Reader. For complete information on installing and using
ZoomText Magnifier and ZoomText Magnifier/Reader, refer to the
ZoomText 11 User’s Guide or User’s Guide Addendum

selecting this option will start the installed copy of ZoomText.

Since the serial number is tied to the ZoomText USB drive, there
are no serial numbers or license activations to worry about.
Includes three machine activations
Single-user versions of ZoomText USB include three machine
licenses, so you don’t need to plug in your USB drive on the
computers you use the most.
Take your settings with you
Your personalized ZoomText configuration settings are saved
to your USB drive and are automatically loaded each time you
plug in and start ZoomText.

Setting Up ZoomText USB
Getting ZoomText USB set up on your system is a straightforward
process that only takes a few minutes and a few steps to complete.
System Requirements
The following hardware and software are required to run ZoomText
11:
Windows 10, 8.1 or 7 with Service Pack 1 (or later).
Processor: 2 GHz i3 dual core processor or similar. i5 or i7
recommended.
4 GB Ram. 8 GB recommended.
Video card with support for DirectX 10 or higher.
Recommended: 256 MB dedicated video memory.
400 MB hard drive space. SSD drive recommended.
5-point multi-touch display for touch screen support.
USB 2.0 (or higher) for ZoomText USB and ZoomText Camera
support.
Note: If your system only has newer USB Type-C plugs, you
will need an adapter to convert from a USB-A device to a USB
Type-C plug.

Installing ZoomText Voices
Important! This step only applies to the International Version of
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader. If you do not have this version of
ZoomText 11, proceed to Installing ZoomText 11 below.
If you purchased ZoomText Magnifier, or an English-Only version of
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader, and would like support for other
languages, contact your ZoomText dealer or Ai Squared to purchase
an upgrade to the International Version of ZoomText
Magnifier/Reader.
All versions of ZoomText Magnifier/Reader come with a set of
premium NeoSpeech English voices that are automatically installed
by the ZoomText setup program. The International version of
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader also comes with premium "ZoomText
Voices" that provide the most commonly spoken languages and
dialects from around the world.
You should preinstall the ZoomText Voices for the language of your
Windows operating system and other language(s) that you need
when running ZoomText. This will allow ZoomText to automatically
select and use a voice matching your Windows operating system
during ZoomText Setup and when ZoomText starts up after the
installation. You can select a different voice for ZoomText at any time
while ZoomText is running.
Note: Installing ZoomText Voices is very straightforward, allowing
you to complete the process in a few simple steps.

To install ZoomText Voices from the ZoomText USB drive
1. Plug the ZoomText USB drive into an available USB port.
The Windows AutoPlay dialog will appear.
2. Select Open folder to view files.
Windows Explorer will open and display a collection of files and
folders, including two files that contain the word "Install".
3. Select Install ZoomText Voices, and then press Enter.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Note: The ZoomText Voices setup program will install system-level
components. In order to install these components, you must have
administrator privileges. If you do not have these privileges, contact
your network administrator before proceeding with the installation.

Installing ZoomText is very straightforward, allowing you to
complete the process in a few simple steps.
To install ZoomText 11 from the ZoomText USB drive
1. Plug the ZoomText USB drive into an available USB port.
The Windows AutoPlay dialog will appear.
2. Select Open folder to view files.
Windows Explorer will open and display a collection of files and
folders, including two files that contain the word "Install".
3. Select Install ZoomText 11, and then press Enter.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Note: The ZoomText setup program will install system-level
components. In order to install these components, you must have
administrator privileges. If you do not have these privileges, contact
your network administrator before proceeding with the installation.
Starting ZoomText from the ZoomText USB Drive
Once ZoomText is installed on your system, plug-in your ZoomText
USB drive and start ZoomText using the procedures below.
To start ZoomText
Do one of the following:
In the Windows Start menu, choose ZoomText 11.
Press the Start ZoomText hotkey: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Z
On the Windows desktop, select the ZoomText 11 program
icon.

Activating ZoomText
Single-user versions of ZoomText USB include three machine
activations. This allows you to fully activate ZoomText on the
systems you use most often, eliminating the need to plug-in your
ZoomText USB drive in order to start ZoomText.
For complete information on activating the installed ZoomText
software, see Step 4—Activating ZoomText located in Chapter 2—
Setting Up ZoomText in the ZoomText User Guide or Help system.
Note: While the software may be activated on up to three computers,
use of the collective installations is restricted to one user at any given
time. Simultaneous use by more than one user violates this license
agreement.
Exiting ZoomText and Unplugging the ZoomText USB
Drive
As with all USB flash drives, it is important that the ZoomText USB
drive is not unplugged while the system is reading or writing
information on the drive, which could corrupt important files needed
to install and run ZoomText. To eliminate this risk, always shut down
ZoomText before unplugging the ZoomText USB drive.
Uninstalling ZoomText
If you no longer need ZoomText on your system, you can uninstall it
at any time. For complete information on uninstalling ZoomText, see
Uninstalling ZoomText located in Chapter 2—Setting Up ZoomText
in the ZoomText User Guide or Help system.

Managing Configuration Files
All ZoomText settings can be saved and restored using configuration
files. Configuration files control all ZoomText features; including
magnification level, the zoom window type, screen enhancements,
reading options, application settings and hotkeys. You can save, load,
backup and restore ZoomText configurations to and from the
ZoomText USB drive.
Saving and Loading Configuration Files
When ZoomText is started using the ZoomText USB drive the
ZoomText configuration settings are (by default) loaded from and
saved to configuration files stored on the USB drive. This convenient
feature insures that your ZoomText settings are always with you as
you move from one computer to another.
To save settings to a configuration file
1. Set all ZoomText features as desired.
2. In the ZoomText menu, choose Configurations > Save Custom
Configuration.
The Save Configuration dialog box appears displaying the existing
configuration files.
3. Type the name of the new configuration in the File name: box.
4. Click OK.
To load settings from a configuration file
1. In the ZoomText menu, choose Open Custom Configuration.
The Open Configuration dialog box appears displaying the existing
configuration files.
2. Highlight the desired configuration file.
3. Click Open.

Backing Up and Restoring Configuration Files
When you run ZoomText using the ZoomText USB, the default
ZoomText configuration file that you load, customize and save is
stored on the ZoomText USB drive. For your convenience, you can
make a backup of this configuration file to the active user folder on
the local system, which can then be restored in the event that the file
has been damaged or deleted. Note: The ZoomText activation file is
also backed up and restored by this process.
To back up your ZoomText configuration files
1. Open the Windows Explorer and browse to the ZoomText USB
drive.
2. Open the Backup and Restore folder.
3. Select BackupConfig.bat and press the Enter key.
The ZoomText Configuration backup utility starts up.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
To restore your ZoomText configuration files
1. Open the Windows Explorer and browse to the ZoomText USB
drive.
2. Open the Backup and Restore folder.
3. Select RestoreConfig.bat and press the Enter key.
The ZoomText USB restore utility starts up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ZoomText USB have all of the same features as the CD-
ROM version (aka "desktop version") of ZoomText?
Yes. ZoomText USB includes all of the same features and
capabilities (including speech synthesizers) as the CD-ROM
version of ZoomText, with the added convenience of a portable
activation that you can use whenever and wherever you need it.
Do I have to install ZoomText to use ZoomText USB?
Yes. As with all professional quality screen magnifiers and
screen readers some components must reside on the system, so
an installation process is required before you can run ZoomText
USB.
Note: Administrative privileges are required to perform the
ZoomText installation.
What happens if an older or newer ZoomText product release
is already installed on the system, for example 10.1 or 12
(future release)?
ZoomText 11 is designed to co-exist with older and newer
ZoomText product releases. Therefore, your ZoomText 11
product will install and run normally even if an older or newer
ZoomText product is already on the system.
Where can I find my ZoomText USB product serial number?
After installing ZoomText, your product serial number will
appear in ZoomText’s Program Info dialog box. To view this
dialog box, in the ZoomText menu, choose About ZoomText.
The serial number can also be found in the SerialNumber.txt
file, located in the root directory of the ZoomText USB drive.
Do I have to plug in the ZoomText USB drive whenever I
want to use ZoomText?

ZoomText USB Setup Guide 11
That depends. If you own a single-user version of ZoomText
USB, you can activate ZoomText on up to three systems,
eliminating the need to plug in the USB drive on the computers
you use the most.
Note: While the ZoomText software may be activated on up to
three systems, use of the collective installations is restricted to
one user at any given time. Simultaneous use by more than one
user violates this license agreement.
How many machine activations come with ZoomText USB?
In addition to the portable activation contained on the
ZoomText USB drive, single-user versions of the ZoomText
USB include three machine activations. Machine activations are
not provided with multi-user versions of ZoomText USB.
Can I make a usable copy of ZoomText USB on another USB
flash drive?
No. While you could copy the contents of the ZoomText USB
drive to another USB drive, it would not contain a usable
license.
What should I do if I lose or break my ZoomText USB drive?
Contact Ai Squared or your ZoomText dealer to purchase a
replacement or to request a replacement provided with your
ZoomText USB Insurance Plan.
Note: ZoomText USB Insurance Plans are only available when
purchased with ZoomText USB.
Can I run ZoomText USB without administrative privileges?
Administrative privileges are required to install ZoomText onto
the system. Once ZoomText is installed, administrative
privileges are not required to run ZoomText.
