Introduction
Thank you for choosing a pressure relieving mattress from our Air-Flo range. The
system you have chosen is a high quality air mattress system designed for those
users at risk of pressure sores.
This manual covers:
Air-Flo 5: 5” overlay mattress for medium risk patients
Air-Flo 5+: 5” air cell and 2” foam full replacement mattress for high risk patients
Air-Flo 8: 8” full replacement mattress for very high risk patients
Intended Use
The Air-Flo range is designed for use as part of a pressure ulcer prevention
programme and should not be solely relied on to prevent pressure sores. They offer
pressure relief while maximising patient comfort.
DO NOT use a mattress from the Air-Flo range near a heat source.
DO NOT use with hot water bottles or electric blankets.
AVOID smoking whilst the system is in use. The materials used in the mattress meet
all necessary fire regulations, but we would still advise against smoking whilst the
mattress is in use to prevent possible secondary ignition of other items, such as bed
linen.
Indications
The Air-Flo range is designed for patients suffering from or at risk of developing
pressure ulcers. The range is designed to treat and prevent pressure ulcers by
facilitating blood circulation. The mattress has a series of individual cells, which gently
inflate and deflate alternately. During these periods of pressure reduction, the
maintenance of blood and oxygen supply to the skin and underlying tissue is assisted.
This helps prevent skin breakdown.
Contraindications
Patient conditions for which the application of pressure relieving therapy on an
alternating system is contraindicated are as follows:
Cervical or skeletal traction
Unstable spinal cord injuries

Package Contents
Check the contents of the packaging. The packaging should include:
Your mattress (with foam base where applicable)
Your pump
User manual
The Air-Flo 5 and Air-Flo 5+ both use the Air-Flo 5 (or Air-Flo 5 Advance) pump. The
Air-Flo 8 uses the Air-Flo 8 (or Air-Flo 8 Advance) pump.

5
Operation
General
In order to get maximum comfort and effective pressure relief, please ensure you
read these instructions carefully and operate the product properly.
Do not use any other pump than those designed for each mattress. It can be
dangerous and result in cell punctures.
Do not change any component by yourself. If there is a need for replacement
or repair, contact your local dealer or service centre.
Safety Precautions
Do not place anything on top of the power unit. Make sure the power cord is
underneath the bed frame.
Cover the mattress with a loosely fitting cotton sheet. This allows moisture to
escape efficiently.
Avoid using the Air-Flo mattress near open flames, lighters or cigarettes.
The system should be thoroughly decontaminated after each use to prevent
cross contamination between patients.
Ensure the user’s weight does not exceed the maximum user weight
recommendation of the mattress.
Ensure there are no protruding objects or sharp points under or on the
mattress as they could puncture the air cells.
Hand Check
A hand check should be performed regularly to ensure the pressure is adequately
supporting the patient.
Slide one hand between the air mattress and the foam base (on the Air-Flo 5+) or
between the air mattress and the bed frame (on the Air-Flo 5 and Air-Flo 8) to feel
under the patient’s bottom. An acceptable range to slide the hand in is approximately
25 to 40mm.

User instructions
Standard features:
LED on/off switch and pressure adjustable knob
Waterproof, vapour permeable cover, which provides a low friction surface
A/B alternating cells provide pressure relief
Operating instructions:
Position pump on horizontal surface or hang it using the hook
Open the mattress on the bed. Secure it with end flaps or straps. Air tubes must
be at the foot end of bed
Connect air feed tubes to the air outlet on the mattress and pump, ensuring that
the tubes are not “kinked” or twisted. Allow space for bed rails to drop freely
Plug the pump into a suitable electrical power source and switch on. The switch
indicator should now be illuminated
Allow 30 minutes for the mattress to fully inflate. The system is ready to use
when low pressure light is no longer illuminated
Cover with a non-fitted sheet
Use the pressure adjustable knob to give maximum patient comfort
Transport mode
Air-Flo 5/5+: Disconnect male and female CPC connectors from the pump and join
together, enabling the system to equalise and retain pressure for a period of time.
Air-Flo 8: Remove connector from pump and place cap over connectors, enabling the
system to equalise and retain pressure for a period of time.
CPR
For rapid deflation simply pull the CPR cord.
NB: Make sure hoses are not kinked or tucked under the mattress. Also check to
ensure the CPR valve is properly attached. When using the systems, backrests
should be placed beneath the mattress to allow uninterrupted pressure relief.

Cleaning instructions
General
Cleaning of the system is required regularly between patients to prevent cross
infection. The cover may be removed and will withstand thermal disinfection washing
procedures described in the Department of Health Service Guidelines HSG(95)18.
Pump
Check for external damage and move the pump to the cleaning area.
DO NOT immerse or soak the pump. Place the pump on a work surface and spray or
wipe the outside of the case with a prepared sodium hydrochlorite solution 1000ppm.
DO NOT spray any cleaning solution directly on the surface of the pump.
Do not use Phenol based cleaning solutions as this may cause damage to the case.
Wipe the faceplate. DO NOT allow excess cleaning solution on to the faceplate or
control panel (if solution gets inside, damage will occur). Allow surface to thoroughly
dry after cleaning.
After the pump is thoroughly cleaned and dried, proceed to plug in the pump and test
to see if it runs normally.
Unplug the pump and store in a sealed polythene bag with a suitable identification
tag.
Mattress
For daily cleaning wipe down all surfaces of the cover sheet with soap and water.
DO NOT use solvents or alcohol-based cleansers e.g. Phenicol, Hibiscrub, Clearsol,
Stericol or Hycoline as these will destroy the mattress materials. DO NOT autoclave.
For thorough decontamination the mattress should be carefully cleaned with
1000ppm prepared solution of sodium hypochlorite and allowed to dry completely.
Unzip the top cover from the mattress. The outer cover can be machine washed at
temperatures not exceeding 95oC and tumble dried on a cool setting.
The air cells are unsnapped from one side and carefully cleaned with 1000ppm
prepared solution of sodium hypochlorite and allowed to dry (make sure to disconnect
all the air cells, one by one, and spray the cleaning solution on all sides, including all
the connecting tubes and hoses).
Re-assemble the mattress and lay the mattress out flat; roll from the foot end and
towards the head end. Store in a sealed polythene bag with a suitable identification
tag.
