ProductOverview
Thisdeviceisa200MbpsPowerlineNetworkAdapterwhichtransformsyourhouse'sexisting
electricalwiringintoaubiquitousnetworkinginfrastructure.Thebuilt‐inpowersocketwillsave
yourpoweroutletresource.SimplyplugthisPowerlineNetworkAdapterintoanordinaryAC
poweroutletwhichwilleasilyextendyourCable/xDSLbroadbandconnectionorexistingEthernet
(LAN)networktoanyotherelectricaloutletinanyroomofahousewithouttheneedofanynew
cabling.
ThisPowerlineNetworkAdaptersupportsupto200Mbpsdatarateovertheexistinghousehold
powercircuit.Withdataratesof200Mbps,fullmultimediaapplicationcaneasilybesupported
throughoutthewholehouseinadditiontoInternetaccess.ThisPowerlineNetworkAdapteruses
theexistingpowerlinesinstalledinahomeasapathtotransmitdigitaldata,voice,audioand
videobetweendevices.
TakenotesthatthisPowerlineNetworkAdapterworksinpairs.Theyshouldbeconnectedina
samecircuit.Withcleanpowerline,thedistancebetweentwoPowerlineNetworkAdapterscan
reach300metersatlease,buttheactualdistancemayvaryduetotheenvironment.
Toensuredatacommunication'ssecurityandmultimediaapplications,thisPowerlineNetwork
Adaptersupportsbuilt‐in128‐bitAESencryptionandQualityofService(QoS)features.With
minimumsetup,youcaninstallandusethisPowerlineNetworkAdapterwithinminutes.The
adapteraddstwonewfunctionstobeuseful.

Chapter3:HardwareInstallation
BeforeyouinstallPowerlineNetworkAdapterpleasebesuretoverifythefollowing:
1. YournetworkaccessdevicestotheInternet(i.e.DSL/CableModemetc.)areinstalledand
verifiedtohaveaccesstotheinternet.
2. EnsurethattherouterhasanavailableEthernetportonitsLAN(LocalAreaNetwork)switch.
3. Ensurethatthenetworkdevices(desktops,laptops,Set‐TopBoxes)youwishtoconnecttothe
adapterhaveanEthernetportavailable.
4. Selectthepowersocketlocationsthatyouintendtoplacetheadapter.
yEnsurethatpowersocketisnotcontrolledbywallswitch,thusavoidingthepossibility
thatthepowersocketwillbeaccidentallyturnedoff.
yEnsurethattheadapterisnotpluggedintopowerstrip,asitispossiblethatpowerstrip
mayhavesurgesuppressionwhichcandegradethePLC(PowerlineCommunication)
performanceoftheadapter.
5. Ifpossible,trytoensurethattheadapterisnotpluggedintoapowersocketthatisnearan
appliancewhichhasamotor,likeawasher,dryer,blender,hairdryeretc.Suchappliances
havebeenknowntosometimesdegradethePLC(PowerlineCommunication)performanceof
theadapter.
Ifalltheitemslistedintheprevioussectionareverified,youmayinstalltheadapterasfollows:
1. ConnectoneoftheprovidedEthernetcablestoHPL220Ethernetport.
2. ConnecttheotherendoftheEthernetcabletoyourcomputer'sLANport.
3. PlugHPL220tothepowersocket.
4. ConnecttheotherprovidedEthernetcabletotherestHPL220Ethernetport.
5. ConnecttheotherendoftheEthernetcabletoanavailableEthernetportofyourADSL
BroadbandRouter.
6. PlugthePowerlineNetworkAdapterintoapowersocketnexttothecomputer.
7. Turnonyourcomputer.
Note:
• Donotconnectthepowerlineadaptertoanextensionlead,powerstrip,extensioncord,surge
protectorasthismaydegradethenetworkperformance.
• PleasecheckandconfirmthatthePWR,ETHandDataLEDsonthePowerlineNetworkAdapter
areonaftertheinstallationwhatmeansyouhavegotinternetaccess.

ThePowerlineNetworkAdapterallowsdatatobetransmittedoverEthernetcableswhatmeans
youcanextendyourbroadbandconnectionorexistingEthernetnetworktoothernetworkclients
byexistingelectricalwire.Digitaldata,voice,audioandvideocanbetransmittedbetweendevices.
ThefollowingisthearchitectureofvariousapplicationsoftheHomePlugproducts.

AHomePluglogicalnetworkisformedwhentwoormoreHomePlugdevicesareconnectedover
commonpowerlineandshareacommonpassword.
SecurethePowerlineNetwork
TheHomePlugAVstandarduses128‐bitAES(AdvancedEncryptionStandard)tosafelytransmit
databetweenpowerlineadapters.Forthepowerlineadapterstocommunicatewitheachother
theyallneedtousethesameNetworkMembershipKey(NMK).Otherwise,theycannot
unscrambletheencrypteddatasentinthepowerlinenetwork.
TheSecuritybuttonallowsyoutosetupasecurepowerlineconnectionwithotherHomePlugAV
compliantpowerlinedeviceswhichalsosupporttheSecurityfeature.
CreateaPowerlineNetwork
Scenario：DevicesAandBwithdifferentNMKvaluesareconnectedtothesamepowerline.Users
wanttousethemtoformalogicalnetwork.

DoasfollowstoformalogicalnetworkusingtheSecurity/Resetbutton:
1. PresstheSecurity/ResetbuttononDeviceAorBfor5to8seconds.Thedevicewillresetand
restartwitharandomNMK.
2. PresstheSecurity/ResetbuttononDeviceAforlessthan3seconds.
3. PresstheSecurity/ResetbuttononDeviceBforlessthan3secondswithin2minutes
4. Waitforconnectiontocomplete.
ThePowerindicatoronbothdeviceswillflashevenlyat1secondintervaluntiltheoperation
succeedsorfails.ThePowerindicatorwillilluminatesteadilyonsuccessfulcompletion.Ifthe
connectionfails,thePowerindicatorsonbothdeviceskeepsteadyon,buttheDataindicatorson
bothdevicesareoff.Inthatcase,repeatsteps1‐4.

JoinanExistingPowerlineNetwork
Scenario：DevicesAandBarelocatedinnetworkN.DeviceC(thejoiner)thatisnotlocatedinany
networksattemptstojoinNetworkN.AnydevicesonNetworkNcanbecomethe‘adder’.

DoasfollowstoaddDeviceCtoNetworkNusingtheSecurity/Resetbutton:
1. PresstheSecurity\Resetpushbuttononthe“Joiner”for5to8seconds.Thedevicewillreset
andrestartwitharandomNMK.
2. PresstheSecurity\ResetbuttonondeviceC(the‘joiner’)forlessthan3seconds,makingit
the‘adder’.
3. Within2minutes,presstheSecurity/ResetbuttonDeviceA(orDeviceB)forlessthan3
seconds.
4. Waitforconnectiontocomplete.
ThePowerindicatoronDeviceA(orDeviceB)andDeviceCwillflashat1secondintervalsuntil
theprocesssucceedsorfails.Itwillilluminatesteadilyonsuccess.Iftheconnectionfails,the
Powerindicatorsonbothdeviceskeepsteadyon,buttheDataindicatorsonbothdevicesareoff.
Inthatcase,repeatsteps1‐4.
LeaveaPowerlineNetwork
Scenario：DeviceCislocatedinanetwork.UserswanttoremovedeviceC(the‘leaver’)fromits
network.

DoasfollowstoremovedeviceCfromNetworkNusingtheSecurity/Resetbutton:
1. PresstheSecurity\ResetbuttonondeviceC(the‘leaver’)for5to8seconds.DeviceCresets
andrestartswitharandomNMK.

2. Waitfortheresettocomplete.
ThePowerindicatorondeviceCmomentarilyextinguishesduringreset,blinksduringrestart,and
thenilluminatessteadily.
AfterdeviceCisremovedfromitsexistingnetwork,userscandisconnectthedevicefromthe
mediumorjoinittoanotherlogicalnetworkonthesamemedium.
ResettoFactoryDefaultSettings
PressingandholdingtheSecurity/ResetButtonforbetween10secondsand15secondsmakes
theadapterrestorethefactorydefaultsettings.Afterallthelightsstartflashingitgoesbackto
factorydefaultsettings.

TheAirMobiPLCUtilityforWindows98SE/Me/2000/XP/Vista/7enablesuserstoidentify
HomePlugdeviceswithinthepowerlinenetwork,measuresdatarateperformance,ensures
privacyandperformsdiagnosticsbysettinguserdefinedsecurepowerlinenetworks.
TheAirMobiPLCUtilitycouldhelpyoutomanagealloftheHomePlugdevicesintheLAN.Please
followtheproceduresbelowtoinstalltheAirMobiPLCUtility.Takenotethatthefollowingprocedures
arerunninginWindowsXP.ForotherWindowsoperatingsystems,theproceduresaresimilar.
1. DoubleclickSetup.exetostarttheinstallation.

2. Thefollowingscreenwillpopup,clickOK.

3. ClickNext.

4. ClickNextagain.

TheMainscreenprovideslistsofallHomePlugdeviceslogicallyconnectedtothecomputerwhen
theutilityisrunning.AfterconnectingaHomePlugdevicetoyourcomputer,theutilitywill
autoscanotherHomePlugdevicesinthesamenetwork.

LocalDeviceonyourcomputer（UpperPanel）
ThisareashowsalllocalHomePlugdevicesconnectedtothecomputer'sNetworkCard.Inmost
cases,onlyonedevicewillbeseen.Insituationswheretherearemorethanonelocaldevices
beingconnected,suchasaUSBoranEthernetadapter,theusercanselectthelocaldeviceby
clickingonitandthenclickConnecttoconnecttotheselecteddevice.Onceconnectedtothe
localdevice,theutilitywillautomaticallyscanthepowerlineperiodicallyforanyotherHomePlug
devices.
