If the unit is to be repaired in a different country to that of its purchase the repair may take longer than normal,

INTRODUCTION TO THE XONE:DB
Congratulations on the urchase of your new XONE:DB4
The XONE:DB4 is a ground-breaking mixer featuring studio quality effects and erformance
features that blur the boundary between DJ’ing and live roduction. Every feature has been
meticulously researched with a view to roviding you, the DJ, with the ultimate creative tool.
The DB4’s quad FX core is based on the Allen & Heath iLive ro-touring console, but with FX
algorithms further develo ed for BPM conscious arameters and tight s ectral control. Many of
the FX are new and unique to the DB4, and have been s ecifically designed to erfectly fit the DJ
environment.
All the loo s and FX are automatically synchronised to the tem o of the song, so it is very easy
to build some amazing grooves and soundsca es without the roblems of latency, low fidelity
and general hassle often associated with using software and la to s.
With the flexible in ut matrix, any audio source can be selected on any or all of the channels;
this allows for different rocessing to be a lied to the same track on se arate channels, or a
hrase sam led in the loo er on one channel can be added to the mix later in the track.
The XONE:DB4 is more than a mixer with an effects unit; many arameters of each effect can
be altered and, along with the built in library of effects, this means that the sco e for audio
mani ulation is almost unlimited, allowing you to develo a totally unique sound in your mixes.
It is also erfectly at home in your roduction studio, where it can be used as a stereo multi-
channel effects rocessor, digitally inserted into your chosen DAW, using the flexible routing
o tions available on the built in 16 channel USB2.0 soundcard.
The XONE:DB4 is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. However, it is worth s ending time
reading this manual to ensure you get the maximum from it.
We have had a lot of fun designing the DB4, and we are sure you will have even more fun using
it.

MIC / LINE CHANNEL
MICROPHONE INPUT CONNECTOR
Balanced XLR. Plug in a DJ, guest or announcement
micro hone here. Use a good quality low im edance
dynamic mic such as those s ecifically designed for vocals.
Do not use high im edance or unbalanced micro hones,
or condenser ty es which require hantom ower.
Use the best rofessional grade balanced cables and
connectors you can afford, as these are ty ically subject to
intense use and abuse in the club environment.

MIC EQ Controls
The MIC equaliser rovides a tool to adjust the tonal
quality of the sound to correct source roblems such as
micro hone res onse, roximity effect, noise and
feedback, to hel the voice cut through the mix, or to
adjust the overall ‘feel’. Start with the EQ controls set to
their mid (flat) osition, then adjust to achieve the desired
sound.

CHANNEL CUE SWITCH
Press the Cue switch to listen to the channel re-fade signal
in the head hones and view its level on the main meters.
The backlit switch lights red when selected. Press the
switch again to deselect cue.

CHANNEL LEVEL CONTROL
Sets the level of the channel signal in the main mix.

CHANNEL ON SWITCH
Turns the channel on, allowing the channel signal to
be routed to the main mix. This feature is very
useful if a micro hone is being used as it can be
switched in and out of the mix.

MIX / CH1 SWITCH
Selects where the channel out ut will be routed:
MIX - Routes the signal directly to the mix
CH1 - Routes the signal to the in ut of Channel 1
If the switch is set to CH1, the ‘MIC’ LED will illuminate in
Channel 1, overriding the matrix in ut to that channel.
This will enable loo s and effects to be a lied to the
micro hone in ut.

FILTER ASSIGN SWITCH
Set the 3- osition switch to its mid osition to
route the signal direct to the mix, or to its left
or right ositions to route the signal to Filter-1
or Filter-2 res ectively. See age 12 for more
information on the filter system.

X-FADE ASSIGN SWITCH
Set the 3- osition switch to its mid osition to
route the signal direct to the mix, or to its left
or right ositions to route the signal to
Crossfade-X or Crossfade-Y res ectively.

CHANNEL CUE SWITCH
Press the cue switch to listen to the channel re
-fade signal in the head hones and see its level
on the main meters. The button will illuminate
when selected.
Press the switch to deselect cue. The switches
are interlocked; ressing another one turns off
the revious selection.
Multi le cueing may be achieved in one of two
ways:
1. Pressing two or more cues simultaneously.
2. Holding down an active cue allows
momentary activation of any other cue
when ressed.

CHANNEL METER
Dis lays the channel signal level. It is ost-EQ
ost-FX, and re-fader.
The channel level control should be set so that
the channel meter averages around ‘0’, with
loudest eaks no higher than ‘+6’. Turn down
the Trim control if the PK! indicator lights.

CHANNEL FADER
A high quality, smooth travel, dual-rail fader
adjusts the channel signal level from fully off to
fully on.

The XONE:DB4 is equi ed with a dual, swe t filter system, that emulates the analogue filters that
have been a key feature on most XONE roducts. The filters can be used as a mix tool, or to create
dynamic effects. Each music channel has a 3- osition toggle switch allowing the channel to be routed
to either one of the two filter systems, or directly to the mix.
On ower u the filters always default to Low-Pass, but any combination of the three filters ty es can
be achieved by simultaneously ressing the filter ty e buttons. The frequency swee control sets the
cut-off oint of the filter, and the resonance alters the Q. A flat frequency res onse is achieved when
the Frequency Swee control is fully clockwise (LPF) or fully anticlockwise (HPF), with the Resonance
control set to its mid oint.

Resonance Control
This roduces the classic analogue VCF sound by feeding some of
the filter out ut back to its in ut. The control ranges from ‘mild’
roducing a very subtle effect, to ‘wild’ roducing a dramatic hase
effect.

HPF Button
Turns on the high ass (bass cut) filter slo e. The button will
illuminate when selected.

BPF Button
Turns on the band ass (bell sha ed) filter slo e. The button will
illuminate when selected.

LPF Button
Turns on the low ass (treble cut) filter slo e. The button will
illuminate when selected.

Frequency Sweep Control
This control sets the cut-off frequency of the filter. It ranges from
very low frequency (20Hz) to very high (20kHz).

Filter On Switch
Switches the filter on and off. The button will illuminate when selected.

ADVANCED BUTTON MODES
Any frequency band select button ([2], [3] and [4]) can be momentarily selected along with the currently
active band. To do this, hold down the button of the band that is currently active and then ress the but-
ton of the band to be momentarily selected. Multi le filter bands may be selected by ressing the band
buttons simultaneously. Releasing the band buttons simultaneously will store the selection.
To turn on the filter, ress the relevant FILTER ON switch [6]. This switch has two modes of
o eration, latching and momentary. To latch the switch ON, ta once. To briefly switch ON a
filter, ress and hold the button; the filter will turn off on release. This function also works the
other way, so if a filter is ON, ressing and holding the button will turn the filter off until the but-
ton is released.

USB A TYPE SOCKET
Allows insertion of a USB memory stick for the ur oses of
loading and saving settings and for Firmware u dates. See Page
26 for information on Firmware u dating.
We strongly recommend that you use a dedicated
USB flash drive for loading and saving settings.

MIX / MONITOR METERS
The main meters follow the selected monitor source. The
meter reads ‘0’ for an XLR out ut of +4dBu. The mixer
should be o erated with these meters averaging around ‘0’
with loudest eaks no higher than ‘+6’.
In SPLIT CUE mode, whilst a channel cue button is ressed,
the left meter will dis lay the CUE level and the right meter
will dis lay the PROGRAM (PRG) level. For more about CUE
modes lease see “Head hone Setu ” on Page 24.

MIX MASTER LEVEL CONTROL
A rotary master control adjusts the level of the main mix XLR
out uts feeding the house sound system. This does not affect
the monitor out ut or the meter reading.

BOOTH MASTER LEVEL CONTROL
Adjusts the level of the signal to the stereo monitor RCA
out ut. This does not affect the head hones. The monitor
out ut could be used for a booth monitor, recording or an
additional zone feed.

CUE / ADD MIX CONTROL
Pans between Cue signal and the Main Mix out ut. Turned
fully anti-clockwise, only the active Cue signal is heard through
the head hones when a Cue is selected. Gradually turning
clockwise introduces the Main Mix out ut to the Cue signal
until, fully clockwise, only the Mix is heard. This does not
affect the meters. S lit Mode ans Left (Cue) to Right (Mix),
see Page 24.

MONTOR LEVEL CONTROL
Adjusts the level of the head hone signal. The head-
hone level can be further trimmed u or down in level
in the Setu Menu: see Page 24.

! Warning ! To avoid damage to your hearing do not
o erate the head hones or sound system at excessively
high volume. Continued ex osure to high volume
sound can cause frequency selective or wide range
hearing loss.

MASTER SECTION
HEADPHONES OUTPUTS
Stereo 1/4” TRS jack and 3.5mm mini-jack. Plug in good
quality stereo head hones intended for DJ monitoring.
Use closed-ear head hones that rovide maximum acous-
tic isolation when cueing your sources. We recommend
that you use high quality head hones rated between 30 to
100 ohms im edance. 8 ohm head hones are not recom-
mended as their very low im edance may cause damage to
the head hone am lifier.

CHANNEL FADER CURVE SELECT
Sets the res onse of the Channel U faders. Choose a
setting that best suits the style of music you lay.

CROSSFADER CURVE SELECT
Sets the res onse of the Crossfader curve, from di ed,
di less, and fast-cut, better suited to scratching.

THE INPUT MATRIX
Each music channel on the XONE:DB4 features an in ut matrix system, making it ossible to select from
any of the twelve available sources no matter which in ut socket they are hysically connected to.
Each channel can acce t in uts in three formats:
ANALOGUE Channel 1 - Line or Micro hone (Micro hone selected on front anel)
Channel 2 - Line or Phono (Selector switch on rear anel)
Channel 3 - Line or Phono (Selector switch on rear anel)
Channel 4 - Line only

Example Usage
Using the matrix, a CD layer lugged into Analogue In ut 4 of your mixer can be routed to Channel 1
by setting the Toggle Switch to ‘ANA’ and the In ut Select Rotary to ‘4’, or can be assigned to all four
channels simultaneously by re eating the rocess on all in ut channels.
Alternatively, if you wish to select your source to be DAW Soundcard Out uts 5-6, set the Toggle
Switch to ’USB’ and the In ut Select Rotary to ’3’.

The green LED will illuminate to show which is the
currently selected source.

MF/RES CONTROL
Adjusts the mid range frequency
content of the channel audio. In ISO
or EQ mode the centre-detent
osition will give a flat frequency
res onse, fully clockwise will boost the
mid frequencies by 6dB, and
anticlockwise will attenuate them.
In FILTER mode this control sets the
shar ness (Q) or resonance of the two
filters. Rotate fully anticlockwise for
low resonance, and fully clockwise for
high resonance. Use this control with
care as a high resonance will boost the
signal level at the Filter cut-off oint
which could cause the signal to cli .

LF CONTROL
Adjusts the low frequency content of the channel
audio. In ISO or EQ mode the centre-detent osition
will give a flat frequency res onse, fully clockwise will
boost the low frequencies by 6dB, and anticlockwise
will attenuate them.
In FILTER mode this control becomes a high- ass
filter, and must be rotated fully anticlockwise for a flat
frequency res onse. Rotating clockwise will
rogressively raise the cut-off frequency of the filter.

MODE SELECT SWITCH
Use to select the desired EQ mode. As each mode
is selected the illuminated ointer on the control
knobs will change colour:
All Blue in ISOLATOR mode
All Red in EQ Mode
Two Blue, one Red (RES control) in FILTER mode

The music channel EQ Section on the XONE:DB4 can o erate in one of three different modes. Each
mode is indicated by the colour of the illuminated control knob ointers.
ISOLATOR MODE
In this mode, the EQ rovides full attenuation when fully anti-clockwise and a safe +6dB of boost when
fully clockwise. This EQ offers a stee 24dB/octave slo e for tight frequency isolation. In isolator mode
the EQ knob ointers are illuminated BLUE.
EQ MODE
In this mode, the EQ rovides –26dB of attenuation and +6dB of boost. This EQ has a gentler 12dB/
octave slo e better suited to certain styles of music. In EQ mode the knob ointers are illuminated RED.
FILTER MODE
In FILTER MODE, the EQ section becomes a high and low ass filter system with adjustable resonance,
offering recise control over the frequency s ectrum. The filters haver a 12dB/octave slo e. The HF and
LF knob ointers illuminate BLUE, and the MF RED. The MF ot controls the resonance, or
“shar ness” (Q) of the filter.

◄►LOOP TIME ADJUST CONTROL
Adjusts the length of the loo according to the value shown in the loo dis lay window.
The loo can be adjusted from 4 bars to 1/16th of a beat (dis layed as “-1”). Clockwise
rotation of the control doubles the loo length, anti-clockwise rotation of the control
halves the loo length.
▼LOOP ON
Pressing the to of the encoder will turn the loo er on. When the loo er is active the
in ut source and channel Trim control are by- assed, however the loo can be further
rocessed by the EQ, and the channel FX unit.
The loo switch has two modes of o eration:
LATCHING ACTIVATION - A short ta on the switch latches the loo on. The
loo is turned off by the same action.
MOMENTARY ACTIVATION - Pushing and holding the switch will turn the loo on,
releasing the switch will automatically turn the loo off.

ROLL ON LED
Illuminates whilst the loo is active. A small “L” will also a ear in the main mixer BPM
dis lay window when a loo is active.

The LOOP section of the XONE:DB4 rovides automatic
loo ing of the source audio for u to FOUR bars at
60BPM or above. Even if the loo length is set to loo
after one bar for instance, the audio will continue to be
recorded for the maximum four bars, allowing you to ex-
and the loo if desired. The loo length is non-
destructive and can be ex anded or contracted at will.
Loo s are not stored in memory so turning the loo er off,
or owering down the mixer will erase the current loo .
LOOP DISPLAY
The Loo Dis lay is com rised of two seven-segment dis lays. The dis lay shows the
loo length that is currently selected.
- = 4 bars 21 = 2 beats 1 = 1/4 beat
2- = 2 bars 11 = 1 beat 18 = 1/8 beat
1- = 1 bar 12 = 1/2 beat -1 = 1/16th beat
The decimal oint of the right hand seven-segment dis lay shows current BPM activity.
The beat detection rocess is automatic and is discussed in greater detail on Page 22.

The loo er on the XONE:DB4 o erates in ROLL mode, meaning that the source material will con-
tinue laying even though you will only hear the loo .

FX Operation
Pressing any of the five effects buttons [1] will select that effect. Each time an effect button is
ressed it will illuminate orange to show it is in “focus”. Selecting a different effect button will
override the revious selection. Only one effect er channel can be selected.
Pressing an effect button on a different channel will move the focus to that channel and cause the
revious channels effect button to turn green; green shows the effect is selected, but that it is
not in focus.
When an effect is in focus further arameters can be adjusted using the global control encoders
next to the dis lay screen; see Page 20 for details. Focus moves every time a CH FX ON [5],
CUE or SELECT [2] button is ressed . The dis lay screen will also highlight which channel
effect is in focus.
Each basic effect ty e, DLY, VRB, RES, MOD, and DMG has a library of alternative effects within
the same category. These are accessed using the SELECT button [2]. Press the SELECT button
once to move the focus to that channel. When the channel is in focus, ress the SELECT button
to o en u the effect library list on the dis lay screen. See age 19 for details.
To turn ON the selected effect, ress the relevant CH FX ON switch [5]. This switch has two
modes of o eration, latching and momentary. To latch the switch ON, ta once. To briefly
switch ON an effect, ress and hold the button; the effect will turn off on release. This function
also works the other way, so if an effect is ON, ressing and holding the button will turn the
effect off until the button is released.

The WET/DRY control [] sets the level from no effect

LOADING IN ALTERNATIVE EFFECTS PRESETS
Loading Alternative Effects from the Internal Library
Each basic effect ty e, DLY, VRB, RES, MOD and DMG has a library of alternative resets within
the same category. These are accessed using the SELECT button. To view or load a reset,
ress an FX button, then ress the SELECT button - this will dis lay the selected effect library.
Use the SEL/ADJ encoder next to the dis lay screen to scroll through the list, then ress the
encoder to load the chosen reset. New or u dated effects will be made available from time to
time and can be added to the mixer via the firmware u date, see Page 26 for details on how to
do this. Check our website, www.XONE.co.uk/db4 for in-de th information on the effects ty es
and their use.

THE FX DISPLAY WINDOW AND FOCUS COTROLS
The effects dis lay screen is divided vertically into four segments numbered 1- 4, which re resent the
four Channel FX units. The highlighted section shows which channel is in Focus.
The illustration below shows the dis lay for channel 1, 2 - 4 follow the same layout.

FX ADJ/TOGGLE VIEW
Adjusts the second effects arameter (e.g. the filter of a Delay).
Pressing this encoder will toggle the view between BPM or the second a-
rameter of the currently focused effect.
FX TIME/TAP
This encoder sets the beat fraction for each effect. Rotating anticlockwise will decrease the time, and
rotating clockwise will increase it. The time defaults to fractions of the detected BPM, but for delays this
can be switched to absolute time in milliseconds, see Page 21.
Pressing and holding this control for a roximately ¼ second will lock or unlock the BPM at the cur-
rently detected setting.
Pressing and holding this control for a further second will reset the BPM detection engine for fresh anal-
yses.
You can also ta in a tem o using this control. You need to ta a minimum of six times before it will be
registered.
