1General Overview
This operational manual escribes the function of the AS5000 Programmer in combination with the programming
boar s. This tool can program the austriamicrosystems AS5000 series magnetic rotary enco ers. The graphical user
interface (GUI) runs on PC running Win ows XP or later an controls the programmer via the USB interface.
All major access mo es to the OTP memories can be establishe . Be aware that austriamicrosystems provi es the
AS5000 Programmer as a reference for programming an rea ing of mentione evices (refer to Appen ix A) un er
laboratory con itions (no warranty for mass pro uction).
Note: Since firmware version v2.10 the AS5000-Programmer contains a boot loa er, which provi es an up ate function
for new software release. Please refer to the correspon ing application note AN5000-60 (available on our
webpage).
2Hardware Components
2.1 Description of the Hardware Components

Figure 1 shows the three components which are nee e to program the austriamicrosystems magnetic rotary enco er.
Take care that the connector between programming box an programming box is plugge in the right way.
Warning:
In case of wrong connection, the components in the AS5000 programmer or the encoder can be destroyed!

2.2 Description of the programming board

The programming boar (AS5xxx-PB) is specific for a group of evices. By jumper setting on this boar the buil in
firmware in the programming box automatically etects the selecte evice. It is not recommen e to change the
jumper setting to a ifferent enco er type than installe in the socket.
To place or remove a evice form the socket, push the black frame of the socket own. This socket has more
connectors as the AS50xx/ AS51xx part an therefore it is important to align the evice to the left si e of the socket.
The pin 1 of the evice must be on the bottom left si e. Figure 2 shows the etaile place evice in the socket.
The jumper J9 is specific for the AS5043/AS5143. This Jumper is use to close the fee back loop use for the analog
output operation mo e. With this jumper the gain can set to 1.
The jumper J6 is by efault close because the AS5000 Programmer provi es 3.3V operation. In case of 5 V operation
the jumper must be remove an the configuration can be change over the GUI.

3Installation
3.1 Hardware setup
First connect the AS5xxx-PB to the 20-pin connector of the AS5000 Programmer, as shown on Figure 1.
The AS5000 Programmer is irectly powere by the PC via USB. An external power supply is not nee e .
3.2 Installing the GUI on the PC
The preliminary software is evelope for a Microsoft Win ows XP operating system with Service Pack 2. In a ition
the otnet (.NET) framework version 2.0 or more must be installe on the PC. This package can be ownloa e free of
charge from the Microsoft webpage:

Following Proce ure is recommen e before starting the GUI:
1. check on your PC if Service Pack 2 is installe
2. install the mentione .net package to your computer
3. execute AS5000GUI_setup.exe
4. Finally start the GUI using the shortcut in the start menu or esktop.

Figure 4 shows the main win ow of the GUI.
In the top left corner, informations about the connecte har ware are isplaye :
-firmware (FW) type of the connecte har ware: ubox (AS5000 Programmer) or br (Demoboard)
-firmware (FW) version
By efault the GUI is in the auto etection mo e. Any austriamicrosystems evice connecte on the USB port (one
evice at the same time) will be automatically etecte an isplaye in the right top corner.
Note: The auto etect mo e can be isable an force to any other evice type by selecting the evice manually.
Once a PB boar inserte , tabs will be isplaye allowing go into two main sections: SSI (or TWI) an OTP.

-Value fiel is the raw angle extracte from the SSI stream. The angle range is 0 (0°) to 1023 (359.6°)
-Status fiel isplays the status bits extracte from the SSI stream. Green light means that the airgap between
the magnet an enco er is correct. Orange light means the magnet is too close of too far.
-CCW checkbox is the angle irection. To invert the rotating irection, check CCW.
-Zero Position fiel : Set button writes the actual angle value into the Zero Position register of the enco er. This
programming is not permanent. The actual value will be 0 after zero position programming. To reset the zero
position register, or to set a new zero position, click on Reset first.
-Rea interval is the SSI stream rea out an refresh rate the GUI.

This example is the effect when the function Zero Position SET has been performe .
Before programming, the enco er shows the position 651 (Figure 6). One click on Zero Position Set makes the software
writing the value 651 into the OTP Zero Position register (not permanent programming).
Selecting Zero Position Reset will write the value 0 to the OTP Zero Position register.
Note: The Zero Position function is the same for all the AS50xx, AS51xx, AS52xx rotary enco ers offering this feature.
Selecting the OTP tab will rea the OTP configuration from the IC.

AS5040/AS5045:
