AXU-SPL4 Mini-LCD Panel
Introduction
The AXU-SPL4 Mini-LCD Panel is a versatile product primarily designed for civic and
commercial voting systems. However, the it can also accommodate a broad range of other
commercial applications. The backlit LCD has a two line by 16-character menu that provides time,
date, user name, menu titles, and control function information. Menus are modified using Axcess
programming software. The bottom menu line can be used to define the functions of the four LED
pushbuttons. For example, a voting menu could provide choices for YES, NO, ABSTAIN or
CANCEL. A meeting menu can have a member's name, time, and date on the top line, and REQ,
CANCEL, and MUTE on the bottom line to control the request-to-speak microphone operation.

AXlink Device Number
The following table shows the AXU-SPL4 device number DIP switch. Set the AXU-SPL4 device
number before connecting AXlink wiring.
The AXU-SPL4 can be assigned as one of 255 devices in the Axcess system. Set the device number
by referencing the table above. The device number is set by the total of all ON (up) switches. For
example, the DIP switch shown above is set as device number 18 (2 + 16 = 18).
Adjusting the Contrast Potentiometer
An adjustable contrast potentiometer is located under the cover plate and left of the four LED
pushbuttons. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to turn the potentiometer to the left or right to adjust
LCD contrast. The contrast potentiometer can be accessed via a hole in the back plate located to the
top left of the DIP switch, as shown in FIG. 1.

Input/Output connections
Connect up to two input/output (I/O) devices to the INPUT/OUTPUT four-pin connector as shown
in FIG. 5. A contact closure between GND and an I/O port is detected as a PUSH. When used for a
voltage input, the I/O port detects a low (0-1.5 VDC) as a PUSH, and a high signal (3.5-22.0 VDC)
as a RELEASE. When used for an output, each I/O port acts as a switch to GND and is rated at 200
mA @ 12 VDC.
! PWR 12 VDC power output for I/O-type equipment
! I/O 1-2 Two I/O ports
! GND Common ground shared with I/O ports 1-2
Preparing/Connecting Captive Wires
1. Strip 0.25 inch of wire insulation off all wires.
2. Insert each wire into the appropriate opening on the connector according to the wiring
diagrams and connector types described in this section. Do not tighten the screws excessively;
doing so may strip the threads and damage the connector.

Connecting to the Control System
Once the AXU-SPL4 unit is programmed and the mount is prepared, it is ready for final
installation.
Perform the following after pre-installation and wiring is complete:
1. Verify control wiring of I/O and relay ports are installed correctly.
2. Connect the AXU-SPL4 to an AXlink data/power bus. The AXlink LED should blink once per
second.
3. The LCD will display AMX AXU-SPL4. The display will change if any text functions are
preprogrammed in the Axcess system.
Testing
Connect a computer equipped with Axcess software to an Axcess CardFrame or Control System
master port and perform the following:
1. Press an LED pushbutton on the panel. The LCD should display text as programmed.
2. Verify proper LED pushbutton feedback.
3. Look at the lower left Axcess software screen to verify correct device and channel number for
the pushbutton.
4. Test the remaining pushbuttons for proper operation.

be channel 97 for its PUSH, RELEASE, and feedback channel. Similarly,
switch 2 through 4 (right most) will use 98 through 100 respectively.
TIME
Sets the amount of time with-
out a switch press before the
backlight times out and shuts
OFF.
