Preface
This user's guide provides the necess ry inform tion for first-time users to
successfully inst ll the Atheros Network Driver Interf ce Specific tion (NDIS)
driver, for the purpose of ev lu ting nd/or oper ting the Atheros AR5001
St tion Reference Design in Microsoft Windows environment. This guide
lso provides inform tion for users who wish to upgr de the Atheros NDIS
driver from previous rele ses.
This guide describes the steps required to inst ll NDIS drivers for the Atheros
AR5001 Wireless Network Ad pter in Windows 2000, Windows Millennium
Edition, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows XP, nd Windows NT 4.0.
This guide lso includes det iled instructions for configuring the PC C rd
device, or IEEE 802.11 st tion (STA), to inter ct with n ccess point (AP) in
infr structure mode nd with other STAs in d hoc mode. Instructions for
inst lling or upgr ding the di gnostic utility LinkMon re lso included. You
should lso re d this before proceeding to inst ll the Atheros AR5001 Wireless
Network Ad pter nd NDIS driver in the t rgeted oper ting system (OS)
environment.

Introduction
The Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Ad pter is n IEEE 802.11 two-chip
solution reference design b sed on the Atheros AR5111 nd AR5311 chipset.
This reference design implements h lf-duplex, Orthogon l Frequency
Division Multiplexing (OFDM) b seb nd processor supporting ll IEEE
802.11 d t r tes (6 to 54 Mbps) nd 802.11b. It lso supports the Atheros
Turbo ModeTM supporting d t r tes up to 108 Mbps. The host interf ce is
comp tible with the PC C rd 7.1 st nd rd. You c n find inform tion
reg rding the Atheros St tion Reference Designs in the det iled AR5001 STA
802.11a Solution Description Reference Guide.

This ch pter describes the Windows 2000 driver inst ll tion.
Driver Installation (First-Time Install)
This section describes the first-time inst ll tion for the driver for Windows
2000. If you h ve previously inst lled driver, refer to the section “Driver
Inst ll tion (Previous Driver Inst lled)” on p ge 2-6.
Atheros recommends th t you remove ny existing Atheros drivers (NDIS,
DK, or TDI) on the PC system before inst lling the Version 1.0 rele se of the
NDIS driver. See Section “Driver Uninst ll tion” for the instructions on how
to remove previous driver rele ses.

Insert the Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Ad pter into 32-bit C rdBus
slot nd follow these steps to inst ll the NDIS driver:
1. W it for the following di log box to displ y.
2. Click Next to continue.
3. Choose “Se rch for suit ble driver for my device (recommended).”
4. Click Next.

5. Insert the Rele se CD in your CD-ROM drive.
6. Choose Specify a location under “Option l se rch loc tions.”
7. Click Next to continue.
8. Browse to the loc tion where the NDIS driver is loc ted ( ssuming D is
the CD-ROM drive), the def ult folder is D:\ndis\bin\production\ndis5.
9. Click OK to continue.

10. When you find the Atheros driver inst ll tion file (net5211.inf), click Next
to continue.
11. The Atheros NDIS ev lu tion driver currently does not h ve digit l
sign ture from Microsoft. Therefore, Windows 2000 shows w rning
mess ge. Click Yes to proceed with driver inst ll tion.

Driver Installation (Previous Driver Installed)
If the system lre dy h s previous rele se of the Atheros NDIS inst lled,
Windows does not prompt for the device driver when the WLAN C rd is
inserted.
Follow the steps below to upd te the NDIS driver:
1. St rt System Properties from Control P nel. Under H rdw re t b, click
Device M n ger.

2. Within Device M n ger, right-click “Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network
Ad pter” under “Network d pters” device node, nd click Properties.
3. Click Upd te Driver... from the Driver t b. Note the Driver Version th t
you re upd ting from. You m y need to verify this field g in fter driver
upd te completes to m ke sure the driver h s been upd ted correctly.
