Model 1715
Headphone Demonstration Amplier
2
Introduction
The 1715 is designed to provide high delity amplication and theft detection for
headphones in self service retail demonstrations. Only one of the four outputs may
be active at any one time. Larger switching systems, linked by Expansion Bus
and audio patch cords, can allow one live position on each 1715 or be combined
for a large system (see Expansion Bus). For best results use a commercial grade
lossless audio player such as our Model 1703.

Features
• Powerful 400 mW (into 32 ohms) headphone amplication
• Adjustable demonstration timeout
• Automatic selection of customer audio source when connected
• Theft detection and integral alarm
• Multiple units (up to four) can be connected
Audio Sources and Customer Auto Demo
Connect a 1703 music player to the Audio Input jack as the default source. If desired,
provide a 3.5mm cord connected to the Customer Input so that customers may
use their own music players to demonstrate headphones. When audio is detected
on the Customer Input jack, the customer device is automatically selected as the
audio source. If no audio is detected on the Customer Input for 3 seconds, the 1715
switches back to the Default Input.
Audio Bus Out
The bus output feeds the currently selected audio input to more 1715 modules or
other audio devices in the system. Connect a 3.5mm patch cord from the rst 1715
bus output to the second 1715 default Audio Input, etc. One linked system sharing a
Default Input also must share one Customer Input (do not use any Customer inputs
besides the rst 1715).
Expansion Bus
Expansion Bus is a four-conductor cable that allows multiple 1715 modules to be
connected and communicate with each other. They can coordinate current product
selection as well as alarm signals and alarm reset (see Theft Detection on page 4).
The expanded system may allow one output per 1715 module to play (Module Mode),
or one output for the entire system (System Mode). Turn on Feature Switch 1 of each
1715 to activate System Mode.
Product Select Button (PSB) Ports
Push-buttons (4-wire or 2-wire) may be used to select tracks.
They are available in several styles and colors; pictured right is a
stainless steel button illuminated with blue LED ring.
Control Port
To control volume on all four outputs, connect a 1795 Visual
Volume™ Control knob (sold separately). This control option
gives visual feedback with its glow ring, its brightness indicating
volume changes; a slow pulse highlights the knob during attract
mode. Push to mute the track, and rotate knob to adjust volume.
Timeout Interval
The demo timer is initiated each time a customer selects a product
output to audition. The demonstration length is set by the
timeout switch, in 15 second increments. If the switch is set to 0,
then the automatic demonstration timeout feature is disabled.

black knob.
PSB-224 push-button. Various
cable lengths are available.

Power
Connect included 12V power supply to Power Input. Connect jumper to other
1715 units if desired, up to four units total.
How to Set the Gain Control
• Raise the volume controls (on the player and/or 1715) to maximum.
• Choose at least one pair of headphones that has similar impedance and
sensitivity to the range of headphones you wish to demonstrate, and
connect them to 1715 outputs.
• Turn the 1715 Gain dial to 1 and start the music player.
• Select a headphone position, and raise the 1715 Gain dial to the point of
distortion, then adjust it down to the desired maximum level.
Theft Detection
1715 theft detection (off by default) is compatible with most headphone models,
including models with active circuitry such as noise cancelling. Activate theft
detection using the Theft Detect switches, which are numbered to correspond
with each headphone position. Keep cable lengths as short as possible. All
devices should be tested for proper detection behavior upon installation. If
detection does not work for a particular device, disable detection for that port.
Attach a reset switch (contact closure) to reset the alarm. The theft indicator
LED(s) turn off when the reset switch is on. Only one reset switch is needed per
system; reset status is communicated to all other modules that are connected
via the Expansion Bus cable. We recommend that a remote theft indicator light
should be installed in clear view of customers. The blinking LED is a deterrent,
warning that theft detection is active. The 1715’s on-board buzzer sounds if it
detects an unauthorized removal, but if a louder alarm is desired, the external
siren port can power a 12VDC siren. When headphones must be connected and
disconnected, turn on the siren reset switch, make product changes, and turn the
switch off again.
When active, the theft indicator blinks and the 1715 detects the headphones that
are connected, so that it will trigger the alarm if one is removed.
Operation
On power up, the status light blinks to show normal operation, and the selected
product button is lit. When the Customer Input is being used, the Status light
blinks rapidly. If used, the 1795 pulses in attract mode and indicates volume
levels during a demo.
