correct configuration of the telephone system and the connected PC. We highly recommend to consult
your authorized dealer first.
Please ask your network operator about the availability of some service attributes. Some of these func-
tions may be available for an extra fee.
The operation of the Auerswald box is not intended for the public telephone network.
Internet Telephony with PBX Systems
What is Internet Telephony?
In case of Internet telephony the Internet connection (e.g. DSL) is used for telephoning instead of the
„normal“ path of an analog or ISDN cable connection. The digital voice data is sent as IP packets from
one telephone to the other partner. This works like the transfer of a homepage from the Internet.
There are already numerous providers who do not only allow to make outgoing calls but also offer an
individual telephone number for each customer. With this telephone number you can also telephone into
the fixed network and stay reachable from there.
Until recently a PC with corresponding software or a special telephone was necessary for the Internet
telephony. In the meantime many providers offer a so-called ATA4. This device allows the connection of
a conventional analog telephone to a DSL modem or router.
Which Advantage does the Auerswald Box offer to the Internet Telephony?
As an ATA only allows the connection of one (or sometimes two) analog telephone(s), you can only tele-
phone with one single telephone via the Internet. Call transfer and telephoning with other telephones in
the house is not possible at all. With the Auerswald Box an ATA can be connected to a free subscriber
port of the PBX system. The Auerswald Box connects the Internet with all internal subscribers of the PBX
and enables them the use of the Internet telephony.
1 System requirements: A Broadband connection to the Internet with a provider tariff (e.g. flat rate) that does generate additional cost.
Calls are only free of charge if you call subscribers of the same SIP providers or of a partner network. Please contact your SIP provider
for details.
2 Incoming calls have to be supported by the SIP provider.
3 Please respect the legal regulations for connections leaving your private property.
4 The ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) enables the connection of a common analog telephone to a DSL modem or router.

3
Which requirements are necessary for the Internet Telephony with the Auerswald Box?
- ISDN or analog PBX with one free internal analog port
- DSL connection with a DSL modem or DSL router (a DSL Router is not absolutely necessary, but it
enables parallel surfing and telephoning via the Internet)
-SIP
5contract with a SIP provider (e.g. www.sipgate.de, www.freenet.de, www.1und1.de)
-ATA

Connection and Operation of the Auerswald Box for Internet Telephony
Connect the Auerswald Box to the other devices as shown in the picture.
Configure an internal telephone number (e.g. 34) for the analog port of the Auerswald Box in the PBX –
if this has not been done yet. You need this telephone number to call the Auerswald Box for outgoing
calls or configuration settings.
Do not configure any external telephone number (external call distribution) for the Auerswald Box.
☞During the installation please pay attention to the corresponding manuals of the other devices as well as
the information from your network provider or SIP provider.
Outgoing Internet Calls with the Auerswald Box
To start a call via the Internet, the Auerswald Box can be called by each internal subscriber of the PBX.
As soon as the Auerswald Box establishes the connection to the ATA (dial tone), the telephone number
to be dialed in the Internet can be entered by DTMF.
Incoming Internet Calls with the Auerswald Box
There are different operation modes A-D for receiving incoming calls from the Internet. Per default the
operation mode C is set.
5 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the popular protocol for the Internet Telephony used by most providers.

Operation Mode A (pre-configured Telephone Number + immediate Call Acception):
In case of operation mode A only a certain internal telephone number is reachable from the Internet.
Thereby the process is like during a „normal“ call for the caller as well as for the called person.
Operation Mode B (pre-configured Telephone Number + Call Acception after Confirmation):
Also in case of the operation mode B only a certain internal telephone number is reachable from the
Internet. From the caller’s view the process is like the operation mode A, while the called person has to
dial any number to accept the call after picking up the receiver. The advantage over operation mode A
is: Charges are starting for the caller only after the active acception by the called person.
Operation Mode C (Caller can dial any Telephone Number):
In case of the operation mode C the caller has the opportunity to dial any available internal or external
telephone number. This way he can also use the PBX to dial directly to an external telephone number
in the fixed network or mobile telephone network. The external call through may be restricted by the
exchange line authorization or number restrictions (e.g. 0900, 0190, 0180).
Operation Mode D (the Caller can dial any Telephone Number with additional delayed automatic Dialing):
In case of the operation mode D the caller can also dial any internal or external telephone number. But
this is only allowed by the PBX within the first seconds (2 seconds for Auerswald PBX systems) after
establishing the connection with the ATA. If the caller does nothing, the PBX will dial a pre-configured
internal or external telephone number. Like in the operation mode C the PBX can be used for dialing
through to an external telephone number in the fixed network or to the mobile telephone network. The
advantage over operation mode C is: The caller will always be connected even if he has no knowledge
about the internal telephone number.
☞This operation mode is only possible if the function Automatic dialing/hotline/baby call/connection with-
out dialing is supported by the PBX (see manual of the PBX).

Configuration of Operation Mode A for Internet Telephony
Pre-configure a destination number in the Auerswald Box as described here:
☞When entering the telephone number the signs *and # are also possible. If you wait at least 5 seconds
during the dialing, you will hear a confirmation tone as a signal that a pause has been saved.
Configuration of Operation Mode B for Internet Telephony
Pre-configure a destination number in the Auerswald Box as described in the following:
Enable the call acception after confirmation in the Auerswald Box as described here:
☞When entering the telephone number the signs *and # are also possible. If you wait at least 5 seconds
during the dialing, you will hear a confirmation tone as a signal that a pause has been saved.
A call acception after confirmation only makes sense when a destination number is pre-configured in the
Auerswald Box. Otherwise in the operation modes C and D incoming calls could not be taken anymore.
If you enabled the call acception after confirmation unintentionally and you like to switch it off again, you
can disable it this way:
Configuration of Operation Mode C for Internet Telephony
For the operation mode C no settings are necessary in the Auerswald Box. If the Auerswald Box does
not have the default factory settings concerning call acception (immediate) and destination number
(empty), you can reset it as described in the chapter “Reset to Default Factory Settings” on page 11.
Configuration of Operation Mode D for Internet Telephony
For the operation mode D no settings are necessary in the Auerswald Box. If the Auerswald Box does
not have the default factory settings concerning call acception (immediate) and destination number
(empty), you can reset it as described in the chapter “Reset to Default Factory Settings” on page 11.

Configure the function baby call, hotline or connection without dialling (see manual of the PBX) for the
extension of the PBX connected to the Auerswald Box. Enter the destination number for this function
that should be reached from of the Internet.
Important Information about Internet Telephony with the Auerswald Box
Please note that in the operation modes C and D via the Auerswald Box a modification of the settings of
the PBX are possible, too. Do not enable any programming authorization for the extension of the
Auerswald Box or protect the PBX by passwords to prevent unauthorized interventions.
Each internal subscriber can start outgoing external calls with the Auerswald Box over the Internet. In this
case a restriction by authorizations or number restrictions (e.g. 0900) is not possible.
eAttention: Please check, if the PBX generates a busy tone on the port connected to the jack
„PBX/Tk-Anlage“ on call completion (may be a configuration option in the PBX). Connections
are not terminated otherwise.
In the operation modes A, C and D for incoming calls, costs may be charged to the caller when the
Auerswald Box takes the call immediately, even if nobody takes the call.
eAttention: In the operation modes C and D for incoming calls, each caller of the Internet can use
your PBX to dial through to an external telephone number and make calls at your cost.
To prevent a direct call through to an external telephone number in the operation modes C and D, con-
figure the exchange line authorization for the internal extension of the Auerswald Box correspondingly
(see manual of the PBX).
If the possibility of a direct call through to an external telephone number should be enabled for incoming
calls in the operation modes C and D, please pay attention on the following security advice:
The length of the call should be limited. In the default factory settings the Auerswald Box only permits a
maximum call duration of 60 minutes. How it can be changed is described in the chapter “Configure the
maximum Call Duration” on page 10.
Configure a number restriction (e.g. 0900) for the internal extension of the Auerswald Box (if supported
by the PBX: see manual of the PBX) to prevent the dialing of these telephone numbers.
Configure (if supported by the PBX) LCR (Least Cost Routing) for the internal extension of the Auerswald
Box to save money (see manual of the PBX)
eAttention: The Auerswald Box does not recognize any busy tone on the ATA side. Therefore con-
nections from the Internet via the Auerswald Box to an external destination that does not termi-
nate the call itself (e.g. answering machine, service number etc.) are not always stopped for this
reason. Prevent calls to such connections with number restrictions (e.g. 0900) and configure the
maximum conversation time to the minimum for your safety (see “Configure the maximum Call
Duration” on page 10).
Some SIP providers do not transmit any DTMF signals so a direct call through is not possible. In this
case you have to use the operation modes A or B for incoming calls.
Some SIP providers (or ATA´s) require a very quick dialing.
Please pay attention to possible changes of your SIP provider. Always get the most current software of
the devices in use.
If you use a group number (or collective number) as destination number in the Auerswald Box or the con-
nection without dialing feature, you will be able to call several internal subscribers at the same time.
Tip for the operation of the Auerswald Box on the analog extension of the PBX Siemens SX353 ISDN:
The function „Automatic Access“ must be disabled on the analog extension. Besides this activate the
function „collective call“ on the internal subscribers that should be called in case of incoming Internet
calls. The common destination number will be „*“ (little star) for all these subscribers. Here the transfer
of an Internet call to another internal telephone will not be possible.
☞
Additional general advice of programming and telephoning with the Auerswald Box can be found on page
10.

7
Call Through (Call Transportation)
What is Call Through?
This function allows the use of the more favorable fixed network priced via the PBX even from the mobile
phone. To avoid high costs when using the mobile phone, you can e.g. call the PBX for a call to a foreign
country and can be connected to the requested connection by the PBX. The function Call Through
enables the direct post-dialing of any telephone number.
The maximum savings can be reached if the telephone number of the PBX is enabled as a preferred
special telephone number (e.g. „T-D1 Local“ or „Partner & Family“) at the mobile telephone provider.
Which requirements are necessary for Call Through?
- ISDN PBX system with two free internal analog ports.
Connection and Operation of the Auerswald Box for Call Through
Connect the Auerswald Box to the other components as shown in the picture.
Configure an internal telephone number (e.g. 34) in the PBX for the analog port of the Auerswald Box
labeled with „PBX/Tk-Anlage“ – if this has not been done yet. You need this telephone number to call
the Auerswald Box for configuration settings. Configure a special external telephone number (external
call distribution) for this same extension). You need this external telephone to call the Auerswald Box
from your mobile phone. This external telephone number must only be used for Call Through.
Configure an internal telephone number (e.g. 33) in the PBX for the analog port of the Auerswald Box
labeled with „ATA“ – if this has not been done yet. A caller may use all functions that are possible on this
extension. Therefore assign the authorizations correspondingly. Do not configure any external telephone
number for this extension.
For Call Through there are no settings necessary in the Auerswald Box. If the Auerswald Box does not
have the default factory settings anymore concerning call acception (immediate) and destination number
(empty), you can reset it as described in the chapter “Reset to Default Factory Settings” on page 11.
eAttention: The Auerswald Box does not recognize any busy tone on the ATA side. Do not inter-
change the two connections of the Auerswald Box ports by mistake. Otherwise connections
through the Auerswald Box to an external destination that does not terminate the call itself (e.g.
answering machine, service number etc.) are not always stopped.
☞Consult the corresponding manuals of the other devices during installation.
Start Call Through Calls via Auerswald Box from a remote Location
To start the Call Through feature, the Auerswald Box is called via the special configured external tele-
phone number by e.g. a mobile phone. As soon as the Auerswald Box is connected to the other extension
(dial tone), the requested internal or external telephone number (with exchange line access number) is
dialed via DTMF.

Call Through with Password
In order to avoid a malicious use by unauthorized callers, the function Private Exchange Line Access (if
supported by the PBX) can be used. Then the caller must enter a password before entering an external
telephone number (e.g. „password 0 05306 9200700“).
Configure the exchange line authorization for the analog extension connected with the socket „ATA“ in
a manner that external calls are only possible with Private Exchange Line Access (when entering a pri-
vate password: see manual of the PBX).
Normally the Private Exchange Line Access is started with entering of some special digits (e.g. „90“ for
some Auerswald PBX systems), afterwards the private password can be entered. Enter these special
digits as pre-configured destination number into the Auerswald Box as described in the following:
☞When entering the telephone number the signs *and # are also possible. If you wait at least 5 seconds
during the dialing, you will hear a confirmation tone as a signal that a pause has been saved.
If a Call Through to internal telephones should still be possible, do not enter the exchange line access
digits into the Auerswald Box. Then the caller has to dial the exchange line access digits and to enter
the password before dialing an external telephone number (e.g. „90 password 0 05306 9200700“).
Important Information on Call Through with Auerswald Box
Please note that via the Auerswald Box a modification of the settings of the PBX are possible, too. Do
not enable any programming authorization for the extension connected with the jack „ATA“ of the
Auerswald Box or protect the PBX by passwords to prevent unauthorized interventions.
Configure (if supported by the PBX) LCR (Least Cost Routing) for the internal extension of the Auerswald
Box to save money (see manual of the PBX).
Each internal subscriber can start outgoing external calls with the Auerswald Box. In this case a restriction
by authorizations or number restrictions (e.g.
0900, 0190, 0180
) is not possible.
eAttention: Please check if the PBX generates a busy tone on the port connected to the jack „PBX/
Tk-Anlage“ on call completion (may be a configuration option in the PBX). Connections are not
terminated otherwise.
eAttention: Unauthorized persons may use your PBX to dial through to an external telephone
number and make calls at your cost if they know the special external telephone number (Call
Through number). Please absolutely pay attention on the following security advice:
The length of the call should be limited. In the default factory settings the Auerswald Box only permits a
maximum call duration of 60 minutes. How it can be changed is described in the chapter “Configure the
maximum Call Duration” on page 10.
Configure a number restriction (e.g. 0900, 0190, 0180) for the internal extension of the Auerswald Box
labeled wit „ATA“ (if supported by the PBX: see manual of the PBX) to prevent the dialing of these tele-
phone numbers.
In order to avoid a malicious use by unauthorized callers, the function Private Exchange Line Access (if
supported by the PBX) can be used. How to configure it is described in the chapter “Call Through with
Password” on this page.

Auerswald Box is connected.
Appendix, General Information
General Advice
For dialing (no matter if used for telephoning or for configuration settings in the Auerswald Box) you need
an analog DTMF telephone, an ISDN telephone with DTMF signalization or a DTMF sender.
The programming mode – signaled by the flashing LED of the Auerswald Box – will automatically be can-
celed after one minute of inactivity. If you do not like to wait such a long time to start your call, you may
switch it off as follows: Dial the telephone number of the internal extension of the Auerswald Box (e.g.
34) – wait for the end of the confirmation tone – dial „0#“.
If you wait too long with the dialing during the programming, you will hear the busy tone and will have to
start again at the beginning.
If an incomplete dialing via the Auerswald Box is finished by hanging up after the dialing of the exchange
line access number (e.g. „0“), the Auerswald Box cannot be reached for the next 2 minutes.
In the default factory settings the Auerswald Box only allows a maximum call duration of 60 minutes for
incoming and outgoing calls due to safety reasons. How to change it or to disable the restriction is
described in the following in the chapter “Configure the maximum Call Duration”.
Configure the maximum Call Duration
