INTRODUCTION
MODELS
ThishandbookcoverstheVolkswagenTridenthigh-topandtheVolkswagen
Trooperwiththesolidsidedelevatingroof.Thelivingareaissimilarinboth
models,theonlyvariationbeingintheroofarea.AllcomplywithEN1646-1:
1998.
VEHICLETYPE
Auto-SleeperTridentandTrooperarebasedontheVolkswagenTransporter
panelvan.
CONVERSIONTYPES
Apanelvanconversionwithfourseatsdesignatedforusewhilstthevehicleisin
motion. TheTridentandTroopermaybespecifiedaseither2 or4 berth.
CLIMATICCONDITIONS
TheTridentisdesignedforuseintemperateclimates.Whenfittedwiththe
CarverP4,itiscertifiedasGrade2 inaccordancewithEN1646:1998.Grade2
indicatesthattheheatingsystemwillraisetheinteriortemperaturesfrom0°Cto
20°Cwithintwohours.
TheTrooperconformstoGrade1 inaccordancewithEN1646:1998.Grade1
indicatesthatnoheatingrequirementshavebeenmet.
HISTORICAL
TheVolkswagenTridentandTrooperwereintroducedinSeptember1991and
subsequentlyupdatedinDecember1994andagaininFebruary1997.
HANDBOOK
Pleaseensurethatyouarefullyconversantwiththecontentsofthishandbook
beforeusingyourAuto-Sleeper.Anyqueriesshouldbeaddressedtoyour
supplyingAuto-Sleeperdealer.

5.1Ensure that yourvehicle'sMaximumTechnicallyPermissibleLaden Mass
(MTPLM) isnotexceeded- beaware that itisanoffencetoexceedthe MTPLM.
You shouldnowrefertoSection11- Weights- containingtheWeightDatafor
yourvehicle.Storeheavyitemslowdownandensure that theindividualwheels
andtheaxlesandthe MTPLM arenotoverloaded.
5 SAFETY
5.1Ensure that allinteriorandexteriorequipmentissafelystowedandsecured.
GENERAL
"A Referringtoyourbasevehiclemanual,checkall fluid levelsincludingautomotive
fueland tyre pressures.Remembertocheck that yourspare tyre isofthe
recommendedpressure.
".2Ensure that, onmodels fitted with anelevating roof, theroofissecurelylocked
downwith,when fitted, theexteriorcatchesapplied.
3 WHILST DRIVING
Whilstthevehicleisbeingdrivenensure that:
5.1Seatbeltsarewornby both thepassengeranddriver- thisisa legal
requirement.

8.8Thebathroomisnotusedwhilstthevehicleisinmotion.(Note:Refersonlyto
models fitted with showerortoiletcompartment.)
8.9Tophingedwindowsare closed, andsecurelyfastened.
8.10Childrendonotroamaroundthevehicle;theymayfallandinjurethemselves.
9WHENYOUGETTHERE
When a Trooper is in use for habitation purposes, the elevating roof must be
raised.
9.1ConnectionOfServices
9.1.1230 Volt - Electrical Mains Hook-Up.
Before connectingtothemains,check that thevehicleRCDisswitched "OFF".
Uncoil thecabletopreventoverheatingandconnecttothevehicleend first then
themainsoutlet.Thefollowingshouldthenbecarriedout:
i.SwitchthemainisolatorswitchoftheRCD"ON".
ii. Press thetestbutton(locatedadjacenttoRCDswitch).Thisshouldcause
themainswitchtotrip.
iii. Returnmainswitchto "ON" position.
iv.Switchthe10ampMCB(MCB1)totheUPposition,(ON).Thiscircuit
controlsthe230voltsocketoutlets.
v.Switchthesecond10ampMCB (MCB2) - (if fitted) -totheUPposition,
(ON). Thiscircuitcontrolsthe230voltsupplytotheFanmaster.
vi. Switchthe6 ampMCB (MCB3) totheUPposition,(ON).Thiscircuit
controlsthe230voltcircuittotherefrigerator,walllamp,waterheater,and
thebatterycharger.
vii. MCB's arenumberedasfollows:
MCB1-10amps.230voltsocketoutlets.
*MCB2 -10amps.Ultraheat(if fitted).
MCB3 - 6 amps.Refrigerator,batterycharger,waterheater,andwall
light.
*only fitted tocoachbuiltmodelswhenFanmasterisfitted.

9.2.2GasAppliances
Thecylindervalvealsoactsasthemainisolationvalveforthegassystemand
shouldalwaysbeturnedoffwhenthevehicleisinmotion.Whenthegas
appliances arerequired turn onthecylindervalveandalltheindividualappliance
isolationvalves.
Theisolatortapisinthe'ON'positionwhentheknobruns"along"thepipework.
InstructionsforoperationforallgasoperatedapplianceswillbefoundinSection
4.
9.2.3 Water System
i.Thewaterpumpissituatedbehindthebottompanel,offside toilet
cupboard, controlledby themasterswitchintheelectricalcontrolpanel.
Whenthewatersystemisnotrequired,thepumpshouldbeswitchedoff.
Ifthepumpisnotswitchedoffthesystemwillremainpressurisedandthe
pumpwillcycleperiodicallytomaintain that pressure.
ii. Thefreshwatertankisfilledthroughthelockablecapontheexteriorof
thevehicle.
9.3The Country AndCoastalCodes
Upon arrivalatyourdestinationyoushouldbeawareoftheCountry Code
relatingtomotorhomeowners.Thisisentitledthe'MOTORCARAVANNERS'
CODE'
9.3.1CodeOfConduct- Camp Sites

Ensure that allfreshwatertaps/connectionsareturnedoff
afteruse.
Have careandconsiderationwhenusingallfacilities(toilets
andshowersetc.)andleavethemcleanand tidy. Young
childrenshouldbeescorted.

iv. Waste Ifthevehicleisnot fitted with a wastewater
Disposal tank, a suitablereceptacleshouldbeplacedbelowallwaste
water outlet pipes.Donotletthesecontainersoverflow.
Dispose ofallwastewaterwhereinstructed.
To avoidpossibledamagetosewagepurificationworks,only
approvedchemicalfluidsmustbe used. Underno
circumstances maycoaltar,phenolorcaustic-basedfluids
be used.
Disposable napkinsandsimilarbulkyitemsmustnotbeput
into chemicalclosetemptyingpointsbutshouldbewrapped
ina polythenebagandplacedinthecontainerprovided.
Put all litter incontainersmarkedforthepurpose.
v. Noise Donotmakeexcessivenoise.
Children shouldberestrained from makingexcessivenoise.
Flying kitesandmodel aircraft andtheuseofitemslike
catapultsorair-gunsaswellasballgamesshouldnotbe
permitted among,orcloseto,motorhomes.
Musical instruments,recordplayers,radiosandtelevisions
shouldnotbeusedtotheinconvenienceofotherpeopleon
site.
Open andclosedoorsquietly.
Power generatorsmustbeadequatelysilencedandused
with consideration.
vi. Dogs and Alldogsandotherpetsshouldbe kept undercontrol.
Pets Unless permissionhasbeengranted,noanimalshouldbe
allowedlooseonthesiteandleadsmustnotexceed10ft.
No animalshouldbeallowedintheshower/toiletblocks.
Do notletdogs foul thesite.
vii. Fire Adheretoandmake note ofall fire precautionsconcerning
Precautions thewhereaboutsofthe fire points.
Althoughnotcompulsory,itisrecommended that a kgdry
powder fire extinguisheriscarried.Itshouldcomply with BS
5423andbemarkedBSIorFOCapproved.Itis important to
check atregularintervals that theextinguisherisworkingas
is requiredbytypesmeetingBS5423.
Careful thought isnecessaryforthepositioningofthe
extinguisher,whichshouldbenearthedoorbutnottoo
close tothecookingequipmentwheresuddenflamescould
makeitunreachable.Inthekitchen area, a fire blanketisa
worthwhile precaution.
Unless permissionhasbeengranted,barbecuesshouldnot
be used. Whenpermissionhasbeengivenconsideration
shouldbegiventotheannoyance that canbecausedto
otherusersofthesite.
Open firesarenotallowed.
viii. Awnings Awningsand tents shouldonlybeusedwhenpermission
& Tents hasbeenobtained.
Whenongrassandstayingformore than a fewdays,the
groundsheetand/orsideflapsofawningsshouldbe
periodicallyraisedinordertoavoiddamagetotheground.

ix. Departure Leavethepitchcleanandtidy.
Onleaving,checkoutwiththereceptionpayingtherequired
dues.
x. Wild Campingawayfromlicensedsites,withoutthepermission
Camping ofthelandownerorhisagent,isnotallowedintheUnited
Kingdom.
Whenpermissionhasbeengranted,allaspectsofthisCode
shouldbeadheredto.
Onnoaccountshould:
i.Litterbedisposedofotherthaninreceptaclesprovided.
ii. Waterbeallowedtoescapefromthevehicle.
iii. Chemicaltoiletsbeemptiedexceptinto thedisposal
placesagreedwiththelandowner.
iv.Washingorsimilarbehungoutsidethevehicle.
xi. Parking Motorhomesshouldonlybeparkedinapprovedplaces.
Whenusingthefacilitiesofa motorhomeatsuchtimes, care
andconsiderationshouldbegiventothosearoundthem.
xii. Driving Whenusinga motorhomeoneitherthepublichighwayor
privateroads,theHighwayCodeshouldbecompliedwith
andfull considerationgiventootherroadusers.
Intheeventofa motorhometravellingslowlyandthere
being a queueoftrafficbehind,thedriverofthemotorhome
should, wherepossible,pulloverinordertolettheother
traffic pass.
Whenthevehicleisinmotionitiscompulsorythatall
passengersareseatedandseatrestraintstraps worn.
Beforemovingoff,elevatingroofsshouldbeloweredand
correctlysecured,andtophingedwindowsclosed.Likewise
alldoorsand access lockersforgascontainersand
chemicaltoiletsmustbeproperlyclosed.
Exterior stepsshouldbeproperlyretractedandsecured.
Whenthevehicleisbeingrefuelled,orona ferry,allgas
systemsmustbeturnedoff.
Gasappliancesshouldonlybeusedwhenthevehicleisin
motion whensuchuseispermittedbythemanufacturerof
theappliance.

plantlife,birdwatchingor just observing thegeneralwildlife.Whateveryour
interest, thereisa lottolearn,butpleaseobservethefollowingcode.
i.Guardagainstallriskoffires.Hayandheathlandcatchalight easily and
onceablazeareveryhardtoputout. Remember: Fire Spreads Quickly.
ii. Keeptopublicpathsacrossfarmland.
iii. Usegatesandstilestocrossfences,hedgesandwalls.
iv.Leavelivestock, cropsandmachineryalone.Viewfroma distance.
v. Take yourlitterhome- itisunsightlyandharmfultowildlife.
vi. Helptokeepallwaterclean.
vii. Take specialcareofcountryroads.
viii. Makenounnecessarynoise. Most animalsareverytimid,noisescan
disturbthemunnecessarily.Ifyouwanttogetthebestoutofthecountry,
goquietly.
9.3.3TheCoastalCode
Asourcoastlinesareincreasinglyusedforrecreationandeducation,the
following suggestionsaremadetoenableusto enjoy ourinheritanceand
preserveitforposterity.
Donottrampleabout,ormoverocksunnecessarily.
Donotfrighten seals orseabirds.
Donotspearfish.
Donotspilldetergents,solventsorfuelfromboatsasthesecankillmarinelife.
Whensailing,moderateyourspeed- thewashfroma fastboatcandestroy
banks andnests.
Livemolluscsandcrustaceansneednotbecollectedassouvenirs- deadshells
can usually befound.
Shellfishcan take years togrowandfinescanbeimposedfornotobserving
nationalregulations.
Donotpullupseaweedunnecessarily.
Make yourvisitinstructive- notdestructive.
Look atmaterial,don'tremoveit. Take notesandphotographs,notspecimens.
Observebye-lawsandbeconsideratetoothers.

ARRANGEMENTOF EQUIPMENT
1GENERAL
1.1Theversatiledesignof both theTridentandTrooperallowsa roomyliving area.
A largeamountoffloorspacepermitsuseas both a loadcarrierandpassenger
vehicle with easy access throughtheslidingdoor.Bothmodelsareparticularly
suitableforadaptationforuseby persons with disabilities.
2 SEATINGARRANGEMENTS
2.1Inadditiontothecab seats, seatingfortwoisavailableattherearofthevehicle.
Thepassengercabseatis fitted with a swivelmechanism.Boththecabseats
can beadjustedtoprovidea comfortabletravellingpositionby releasingthe
catches tothesideoftheseatwhichcontroltheforeandaftmovementand
backrestrake.Theoptionalarmrestsareadjustedbytheknurledknobonthe
underside.
2.2Whentravelling with childreninthevehicle,thechildproofsafetylockonthe
slidingdoorshouldbeengaged.Ensure that thisisdisengagedwhenthemotor
caravan isparkedofftheroad.
2.3Lapanddiagonalinertiareelseatbeltsare fitted asstandardequipmenttoall
seats andpassengersareadvised that itisa legalrequirementtowearthese
whilstthevehicleisinmotion.
3 SWIVEL MECHANISM
3.1Inordertoswivelthepassengerseat, lift thereleaseleveronthe front ofthe
seat. Ensure that theswivelmechanismislocked with theseatfacingforward
beforemovingoff. Care mustbetakenwhilstswivellingthepassengerseatto
ensure that itsrunnersdonotcome into contactanddamagethepassenger
doorpocket.A smalldegreeofforeandaftmovementmaybenecessaryto
avoidthis.
4TABLES
4.1Twotablesaresuppliedasstandard.Thelargetableisstoredbehindthedriver's
seat andthesmaller dinette tableisinthebeddrawer.Whenthelargetableis
required,thelegshould first beplacedinthefloormountingandthetableplaced
uponit.Whenthetableisnotinuse,thebungshouldbeplacedinthefloor
mountinghole.
4.2TheanglelegfortheTridentisstoredinthebedboxdrawer.Thestraighttable
legfortheTridentstoredinthe front rooflocker.
4.3Whenthesmalltableisrequired,thisshouldbeplacedontheoffsettableleg
andtheassemblyswivelledtotherequiredposition.
4.4Tablesandlegsmustbestoredwhenthevehicleisinmotion.
5 KITCHEN AREA
5.1Thekitchenisontheoffsideofthevehicleandisequipped with a two-burnerhob
with grill,stainlesssteelsink,draineranda refrigerator.Thehobandsink,when
notinuse,areconcealedbeneathhingedlids.Beneaththehobisthe
refrigerator.Belowthesinkisa smallhingedflapwhichgives access tothe
cutlerydrawer,thecrockeryishousedinthecupboardbelowthis.

Immediatelytothe right oftherefrigeratoratfloorlevelisthechemical toilet inits
ownstoragecompartment.Tothe right ofthiscompartmentaretheCarver
Rapide, (when fitted) gastaps,andtheResidualCurrentDevice.Whena
thermostaticallycontrolledblownairheatingsystemisfitted,theheaterventsare
foundimmediatelyin front ofthestoragedrawer.Betweenthesinkand
wardrobe,isa chestcompartment fitted with a removablewirebasket.
6WARDROBE UNIT
6.1Thewardrobe unit isontheoffsiderearofthevehicle. Access isthroughboth
thehingedwardrobedoorpositionedabovetheseatbackrestandthroughthe
additionaldooraccessiblefromtherearofthevehiclewhenthetailgateisopen.
7SLEEPINGARRANGEMENTS
7.1 Lower Double Bed
7.1.1Tomakethebed,releasethelockingmechanismandpulltheseatbaseoutto
itsfullyextendedposition.Thecushionswillautomaticallyassumetheircorrect
positions.
7.1.2Forconvertingthebedback into theseat,pushthe front endofthebed until the
seat reformsandthelockingcatchengages.
8OPTIONALROOFBUNK
8.1 Trident

model. Theroofbunk,suitableforchildren,islocatedattherearofthevehicle.
This bunkismadeupbyundoingtheretainingbolts,loweringtheretaining
board, andmovingthemattresses into position.Whentheroofbunkisoccupied,
therestraintsafetynetmustbe used, andtheladderusedfor access. Whenthe
optionalbunkisspecified,an access ladderandrestraintnetarefitted.
8.1.2Theroofbunkmustnotbeoccupiedwhenthevehicleisinmotion.
3.1.3Theroofbunkdoublesasa storage area. Threelockingpositionsallowthe
storageareatobevariedaccordingtotheamountofspacerequired.Whenused
forstorage,theforwardhingedflapshouldbeverticalwhenlockedposition.This
area mustnotbeusedforthestorageofheavyitemswhichcouldmoveforward
underheavybraking.
3.2 Trooper
3.2.1Inboth2 and4 berthmodels,roofbunkmattressesaresuppliedasstandard.
Whena 4 berthisspecifiedan access ladderandrestrainingnetarefitted.
Thebunkconsistsoftwomattressesstoredinthe roof. Toassemblethebunk,
raise theelevatingrooffully,engagethesidepanelsintheirverticallocked
position,placingthemattressesasfollows:
i.Thin(small)mattressatrearofroof area.
ii. Forwardmattressboardinfullyforwardpositionagainsttrimmedlocation
blocks.
3.2.2Todismantlethebed,theaboveactionshouldbereversednoting that the thin
(small)roofmattressmustbeplacedtotherearoftheroof area.

8.2.3Themaximumcombinedweightofthebunksoccupantsmustnotexceed80kg.
8.2.4Whentheroofbunkisoccupied,therestraintsafetynetmustbe used, andthe
ladderusedfor access andleaving.Thebunkmustnotbeoccupiedifthevehicle
is moving.
9ROOFOPERATION
9.1.Inordertoraisetheelevating roof, thefollowingactionsshouldbecarriedout.
Outside.
i. Release theexternaltie-downpulls fitted tobothforwardcornersofthe
roof. Then:
Inside.
ii. Removetravelcatchfromlockedpositionon front roofanchoragecatch.
iii. Removethetworetainingstrapsfromrearlockingbar.
iv. Release front roofanchoragecatch.
v.Moverearroofbarretainingcatchdownwards until inverticalposition.
vi. Usinghandles,pushroofupwards into fullyextendedposition.
vii. Hingeroofpanelsupwardstorequiredpositionandlockateitherend.
9.1.2To Lower Elevating Roof
i.Theactiondescribedaboveshouldbereversed,having first ensured that
thebunkmattressesarestoredcentrally,togive access totherearroof
retainingcatchhandle.
9.1.3 Safety and Security
i.Undernocircumstancesisthevehicletobemoved with theroofinthe
eievatedposition.
ii. Side panelsmustalwaysbelockedinpositionbyuseofthecatchesat
bothends.
iii. Intheeventofonesidepanelbeingloweredforaddedventilation,the
oppositesidepanelmustbelockedintheverticalposition.
iv.Beforemovingoff,theelevatingroofmustbelockedinthe"down"
position with theforwardcatchapplied,theforwardturnbuckleclip
secured onthecatchina horizontalpositionand with therearlockingbar
intheforwardposition with thesafetystrap,clippedinposition.The
externalpull-downclipsmustbeappliedbeforemovingoff.Underno
circumstances mustthevehiclebedriven without theseclipsbeing
secure.
9.1.4Locking Down
Once theroofisfullycloseditshouldbepulled firmly downusingthestrapsand
buckles.

10.1LowerWindows
10.1.1AlllowercaravanwindowsarefactoryfittedVolkswagenunitsandare
manufacturedintoughenedglass.Twoslidingwindowsarefitted,oneonthe
nearsideslidingdoortheotherontheoffsideimmediatelybehindthedrivers
seat.Toopenthewindows:
i.Squeezethelockingmechanismonthecatch.
ii. Slidewindowtotherequiredposition.
10.1.2Itshouldbenotedthatthesideslidingwindowshaveintermediatestoppositions
allowingthemtobeopenedtogiveventilationwhilstatthesametime
maintainingvehiclesecurity.
10.2UpperWindows(Trident)
10.2.1Theupperwindowsinthehigh-toproofaredoubleglazedtophingedacrylic
units. Theymaybeunlockedbyreleasingtheovercentrelockingcatchesand
lockedbycarryingoutthereverse.Theymaybesecuredintheopenpositionby
useofthefrictionstay.Thesewindowsshouldbeclosedwhilstthevehicleis
beingdriven.
10.2.2Weadvisethatthewindowsareclosedinexceptionallywetconditionssincein
driving rain, watermaypermeatearoundtheendsofthewindowsandenterthe
vehicleinterior.
'1VENTILATION
11.1Trident
11.1.1Inadditiontothatprovidedbythewindows,additionalventilationisavailable
throughtheMPKroofventilator.
Thismulti-positionventilatormaybesetina varietyofpositionsbyuseofthe
springhandles.
Ahingedflyscreenisalsofitted,asisa nightblind;thisisa springloadeddevice
whichwhendrawnislockedinpositionbyuseofthehookcatch.Theventilator
shouldbeclosedwhilstthevehicleisinmotion.
11.1.2OptionalOmnistorOmnivent
Asa factoryfittedoption,anOmnistorOmniventmaybefitted.Itscanopyis
openedbya windingmechanism.
Thefanincorporatesa two-way3-speedmotor,operatedbya rockerswitchin
thebodyofthevent.Switchpositionsrepresentthefollowingloading:
i.Position1 1.6amps
ii. Position2 2.2amps
iii. Position3 3.6amps
"M.3TheOmniventmustbeintheclosedpositionwhenthevehicleisbeingdriven.It
incorporatesfixedventilationwhichmust,undernocircumstances,beblocked.

11,2.1 Theelevatingroofofthismodelcannotbe fitted with a roofventilator.Additional
ventilationcanbeprovidedbyhingingthesidepanelsinwardsatthetoptothe
secondary lockingposition.Theroofmustberaisedwhenthevehicleisbeing
used forhabitationpurposes.
12ROLLER BLINDS ANDFLYSCREENS
12.1BoththeTridentandTrooperhavecassetteblindsandflyscreens fitted tothe
lowerwindows.Thesearealso fitted totheTridentroofwindows.Theblindmay
beoperatedindependentlyoftheflyscreenbutwhentheflyscreenisrequiredit
mustbeclippedtotheblind.
"3 INSULATION
13.1Allbodypanelsexceptthe front doorsandenginebulkheadareinsulatedusing
fibreglasswool.TheTridentroofisalsoinsulated with styrenefoamgiving
protectionagainstextremesofheatandcoldwhilstatthesame time minimising
condensation.
'4 FIRE EXTINGUISHER
14.1A Guardian1 KgDryPowderType1211(BCF)refillable fire extinguisheris fitted
totheoutersideofthenearsideseatbox.Itismanufacturedandinspectedto
BS5423: 1987andhasa 3A/21B fire rating.Itshouldbecheckedatregular
intervalsforthefollowing:
i.Thetaper,sealtieandyellowsafetywedgeareinpositionandintact.
ii. Thenozzleisnotobstructed.
iii. Thepressuregaugepointerisinthegreensection.Iftheextinguisheris
very cold, thepressure will drop.Thepointershouldbeinthecentreofthe
greensectionat20°C(68°F).
"4.1.5 Youshouldnottestyourextinguisher,evenfora shortburst,sincethis will cause
a lossofpressureandmaketheextinguisherinoperative.
