1. General
The LC418/LC518/LC618 series rugged lapel cameras are intended
for use in military, homeland security, mobile security and personnel
safety applications. All models have a RF output power of 70mW.
The following table details a brief matrix of the transmitters:
Series Tuning range Extended tuning
range (optional) Modulation
LC418 460MHz-803MHz 460MHz-860MHz VSB
LC518 900MHz-928MHz 900MHz-2.150GHz FM
LC618 2.4GHz-2.48GHz 2.150GHz-2.5GHz FM
All lapel cameras offer the following features:
•A high resolution, high sensitivity B/W CCD camera.
•A built-in Electret microphone.
Any reference in this manual to LC618 series implies the LC418
and LC518.

1.1 Video camera.
The LC618 has a built-in high-resolution high sensitivity black & white
video CCD camera.
1.2 Microphone.
The LC618 has a built-in sensitive electret microphone.
1.3 The LC618 lapel camera transmitter electronics.
The microphone audio output is amplified and modulated on a
6.2MHz subcarrier. This frequency may be factory preset to any
frequency between 4.8MHz and 7.5MHz.
The camera video output is buffered and combined with the
modulated audio subcarrier, then DC level restored, limited by a white
level clipping circuit, pre-emphasized and (VSB on LC418 series)
(FM on LC518/LC618 series) modulated onto the transmitter RF
carrier.
The LC618 antenna output is via a 50Ω(OHM) MMCX connector. RF
output power is 70mW at a SWR of 1.5:1.
2. Specifications
2.1 User Interface.
The only user interface of the LC618 is an On/Off Switch. This switch
shuts off power to the entire transmitter.
2.2 Setup.
The LC618 lapel camera transmitters have the following setups:
a) Channel select switches (16 channels)
Units that have a manual synthesizer have a 4 position dip switch
that selects a channel number (from 1 to 16). The preset channel
numbers are defined by a label on the side wall of the transmitter.
b) Camera focus adjust.

2.3 Electrical Interface.
The LC618 lapel camera has the following interfaces:
2.3.1 Power Input/Video Output
a) The transmitters operate off a 12Vdc regulated voltage source.
b) This input is switched and protected against reverse polarity.
c) Typical power input current consumption is 270mA.

d) Video output is a 1Vp.p. NTSC compatible signal with negative
going sync tips. The output impedance is 75Ω(OHM).
This output is designed to drive an Avalon RF portable DVR
and/or a Head Mounted Display (HMD).

2.4 Mechanical
2.4.1 Mounting.
Mounting can be done in one of the following methods:
a) Clamping.
Clamping (or hard mounting) is the only method of mounting in all
fixed installations.
Clamping is the preferred method of mounting in all mobile
installations where most electrical interfaces are used. This is due
to the connector and cable weight.
b) Clip on.
Avalon RF offers a clip on kit. This method is recommended when
only one or two interfaces are in use.
c) Velcro®to a flat surface.
Using Velcro®to secure the transmitter is recommended when
only a few interfaces are in use.
d) Drop-in.
The transmitter can be dropped into a bucket mounted on the side
of the video camera, like the ones usually found in ENG service.

3. Operating the transmitter.
Before applying power, make sure that the LC618 is powered and
that antenna is connected and that the companion Avalon receiver is
tuned in to the same frequency as the LC618.
3.1 The transmitter will not transmit unless it is powered up.
The receiver will not receive unless is powered up.
3.2 The transmitter will not transmit unless it has an antenna.
3.3 The LC618 antenna has to have a clear line-of-sight.
3.4 The DX series receiver will not receive unless it is tuned in to the
same frequency as the LC618
