Chapter 1
Introduction
This Guide provides instructions for installing and operating the ConnectPlus 1000 gateway
with the Avid MediaStream Network Storage System (NSS).
A brief overview of each chapter after this introduction follows:
•Chapter 2 describes how to connect the gateway to the VLAN, RAID Storage
subsystem, and your LAN/WAN.
•Chapter 3 provides instructions for a system recovery, software installation, and
configuration
•Chapter 4 describes the ConnectPlus 1000 monitoring tool.
•Chapter 5 describes how to use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and provides a simple
check to verify that your system is operational.
•Appendix A presents IP addressing topics, such as Hosts Files and Hosts Table, aliases,
and the Avid MediaStream Systems network addressing scheme
•Appendix B is an overview of Avid MediaStream’s adherence to regulatory and safety
requirements.
Introduction to ConnectPlus 1000
ConnectPlus 1000 Network Storage is a gateway providing access to archive storage and to
content distribution with a set of MediaStream Servers (or nodes) in a Avid MediaStream
NSS. ConnectPlus 1000 provides high-speed connectivity with up to 300 Mbps performance
over industry-standard Gigabit Ethernet. Network data transfer uses Avid MediaStream’s
implementation of standard FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allowing you to use off-the-shelf
FTP clients. FTP allows easy integration of the gateway with Automation and Archive
systems.

Chapter 1 Introduction

Windows 2000 operating system and the ConnectPlus software pre-installed. The gateway
has a 1000BT Ethernet interface and a Fibre Channel interface. Each gateway is licensed for
use on one MediaStream NSS.
ConnectPlus 1000 Gateway Chassis
The ConnectPlus 1000 gateway provides network access for the NSS , including
connections to archive backup systems or to other MediaStream storage systems (see the
following block diagram). Each individual NSS is called a cluster. The network parameters
allow up to 48 clusters at an installation site.

nIt is the your responsibility to purchase WAN or other network connectivity through Telco or
other WAN service providers, and to purchase the Gigabit Ethernet switch for most
configurations. You are the default systems integrator for WAN solutions.

System Connections
This chapter describes how to connect the gateway to the VLAN, RAID Storage Subsystem,
and your LAN/WAN.
Connecting the ConnectPlus 1000 Gateway
These physical connections on the ConnectPlus 1000 gateway provide the interconnections
to system components:
• A VLAN connection provides the communication link to MediaStream Server Nodes
and to the File System Controllers (FSCs).
• A Fibre Channel connection provides access to the RAID Storage Subsystem.
• A Gigabit Ethernet port provides the LAN/WAN connection to other MediaStream
systems system automation and archive system.
Interconnection to other servers in the MediaStream family requires a second ConnectPlus
gateway to complete the connection path.
The 1 RU (Rack Unit) gateway has a special cable that connects to the rear of the chassis to
provide Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor connections. If connecting multiple Gateways, an
additional cable is available to provide a KVM connection.
See the following figure for the connection diagram.

VLAN Connection
The gateway VLAN port connects to one of the VLAN switches on the NSS. The NSS uses
redundant VLAN Ethernet switches to provide fast and safe failover in the event of a break
in network connectivity. Each switch provides isolated connections between the Video
Server Nodes and the two File System Controllers (FSCs). The FSCs and MSS Server Nodes
are mission-critical components requiring fast failover protection. These devices provide
redundant connections to each of the VLAN switches. Since gateways do not provide on-air
service, they are only connected to one of the VLAN switches.
To ensure proper system function, installation must conform explicitly to the design
parameters of the system and the gateways must be connected to their designated port. The
VLAN switch model is the Hewlett Packard HP2524. This 24-port switch is configured for
systems with more than four MSS model servers and up to six ConnectPlus 1000 gateways.
