S6L Module Installation
Stage 64 Controller Assembly Replacement
This document shows how to replace the Controller assembly in Avid® VENUE Stage 64 I/O units.
After collecting the required items, listed below, proceed to Prepare the I/O Rack Unit.
Required Items
This procedure requires the following items:
• #1 Phillips screwdriver (6-inch or longer)
• A clean, padded work surface
• Anti-static wrist strap (not included). Make sure you are electrically grounded and discharge static before working
• Recommended: A known-good XLR cable to perform an audio loopback test
Prepare the I/O Rack Unit
Do the following to prepare your Stage 64:
1Shut down your VENUE system and power down your Stage 64.
2Disconnect all cables from your Stage 64.
3Remove the back panel by loosening the eight captive thumbscrews completely, using a #2 Phillips screwdriver if necessary, and set
the panel aside.

Remove the Controller Assembly
To remove the Stage 64 Controller assembly:
1Loosen the four captive thumbscrews that secure the Controller to the front of the chassis.
2Inside the back of the unit, loosen the captive thumbscrew that secures the Controller to the chassis.
3Starting at the far right and working to your left, disconnect all ribbon cables from each I/O card.

4Disconnect the 2x PSU cables and 1x signal cable from the back of the controller.
5Using one hand to guide the I/O ribbon cables so they don’t get caught on the chassis frame, pull the Controller out through the front
of the Stage 64.
6Proceed to Install the New Stage 64 Controller.

Install the New Stage 64 Controller
To install the new Stage 64 Controller Assembly:
1Hold the new Controller assembly in one hand while you carefully feed the ribbon cables into the Controller slot in the Stage 64.
2Gently push the Controller into the slot and, reaching in from the back of the Stage 64, continue guiding the ribbon cables through
ahead the slot.
3From the back of the unit, make sure all the ribbon cables are clear of the slot and then gently push the Controller the rest of the way
in. Make sure the alignment pin on the back end of the Controller assembly is lined up with, and passes through, its hole in the
Stage 64 chassis.
4Tighten the captive screw to secure the back of the Controller assembly to the Stage 64 chassis.
5Reconnect all ribbon cables from the Controller to I/O cards, working left-to-right (shortest to longest). Make sure the tabs on the
connectors click into their locked position.
6Reconnect the 1x signal and 2x PSU cables. Make sure the cables are fully seated.
7Making sure to orient it correctly, reinstall the back panel and tighten its eight captive thumbscrews.
8At the front of the Stage 64, tighten the 4 captive screws on the front of the Controller assembly to secure it to the Stage 64 chassis.
9Re-install the back cover of the Stage 64 and tighten the 8 captive screws that secure it to the chassis.
10 Proceed to Confirming Installation.
Make sure the ribbon cables do not get bent or pinched, and be especially careful to prevent them from coming into contact with com-
ponents on Output cards installed in the Stage 64!

Confirming Installation
To confirm installation:
1Connect the power cables to the Stage unit and to a power source.
2Connect the Stage unit to the rest of your S6L system using Ethernet or fiber.
3Power on your S6L system (engine, control surface, then Stage unit).
4Enable Config mode.
5In the VENUE software screen, go to the Options > Devices page.
6In the AVAILABLE DEVICES column, select the Stage 64 device so it is highlighted.
7Click CONNECT.
8Click to select a flashing Stage slot and assign the selected I/O unit to that slot.
9Click to select the Stage 64 in CONNECTED DEVICES.
10 In the INFORMATION pane, select the SETTINGS tab and make sure all I/O cards are shown.
For example, the following image shows a Stage 64 with 6x SRI analog input cards and 1x SRO analog output cards installed. Note
how only 5 of the input cards are listed.
11 If any installed card is not listed, shut down your system and Stage 64, remove the back cover and check to make sure the ribbon cable
connection to each I/O card.
