Introduction

1 Introduction
CANopen is a CAN-based higher layer protocol, which can be used in a very
wide range of applications. It is an established technology with a large installed
base.
Process automation equipment such as sensors, actuators, transmitters, drives
and programmable logical controllers increasingly use digital microelectronics.
CANopen ensures that devices from different vendors can communicate effi-
ciently in a network.
The CANopen specification belongs to the CAN in Automation (CiA) interna-
tional users’ and manufacturers’ group.
The CANopen adapter, CAB15, is connected between the operator terminal
and the CANopen network. CAB15 can act either as a CANopen Master or as
a CANopen Slave.
For information about supported CANopen Master and Slave features and ser-
vices we refer to the driver documentation (help file).

2 Installation
This chapter describes how to connect CAB15 to the operator terminal.
CAB15 is connected to the RS422 port on the operator terminal.
CAB15 can also be connected via the serial interface CAB23, described in
chapter 6 Drawings.
The communication between CAB15 and the operator terminal is serial and
asynchronous via RS422 (half duplex) with a baud rate of 38.4 kbit/s. The error
check method implemented is CCITT CRC16 CRC (Cyclic Redundancy
Checking). The bus topology is point-to-point master-slave.
The operator terminal works as master and polls CAB15 for services.
EDS file
CAB15 uses an EDS (Electronic Data Sheet), included with the driver, with a
description for all objects.

5 Firmware upgrade
CAB15 supports firmware upgrades in the field PC download tool. A standard
HyperTerminal with Xmodem support must be used.
The download can be made through the RS232C port on the operator terminal.
Application and bootloader version will be available in the operator terminal
interface.
Perform the following steps to upgrade the CAB15 firmware:
1. Select Setup/Peripherals in the terminal project and add Transparent mode
under the RS232 port.
2. Download the new project to the terminal.
3. Start the Windows program HyperTerminal and enter the following config-
uration: 38400,8,N,1(no flow control).
4. Connect HyperTerminal and press space, to get a menu in the
HyperTerminal and passthrough in the operator terminal.
5. Type Dand then Y.
6. Choose Transfer and send file, select the .hms file and set the protocol to
Xmodem; perform these actions quickly. Click Send for CAB15 to update
its software.
7. After the download, the CAB15 firmware is updated. Press Xto restart the
adapter.
