The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within
equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the user to
the presence of uninsulated “dangerous voltage”
within the product’s enclosure that may be of
sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric
shock to persons.
The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle
is intended to alert the user to the presence of
important operating instructions and maintenance
(servicing) instructions in the literature accompanying
the appliance.
Important Safety Information
This apparatus has no mains switch or other user-
operated control for disconnecting the AC mains

MADI-SWITCH User Manual v1.1
6Bel Digital Audio Limited
Designed to complement the BM-A2-64MADI Audio
and Data Monitor, the MADI-SWITCH provides the
ideal routing solution when monitoring multiple MADI
streams is required.
The MADI-SWITCH is an 8x1 selector allowing
manual selection of one of eight incoming MADI
streams. The selected MADI stream is then routed
directly to the switch’s main MADI output ports - one
coaxial and one fibre (multimode as standard). Each
incomming MADI port is paired with an active front
panel mounted MADI loopthrough output. With up
to eight incoming MADI streams the MADI-SWITCH
enables up to 512 audio channels to be monitored
on just one MADI monitoring device; thus resulting
in significant saving in real estate.
Three versions are available:
MS64-F: Fibre switch
MS64-C: Coaxial switch
MS64-FC: 4 x Fibre and 4 x Coaxial switch
The front panel provides eight MADI inputs, with
active loop-through outputs for connection to
downstream devices. Input source selection is made
using the front panel momentary toggle switch.
Indication of the selected MADI input is provided by
the SEL LED illuminating.
A SIG LED on each MADI input illuminates when an
input source is present.
A traditional scribble strip is provided to allow the
naming of incoming MADI sources to be labelled for
clarity and ease of operation.
The MADI-SWITCH is a very high quality product,
engineered for maximum reliability in professional
broadcast, live and production environments. It
requires virtually no configuration on installation, or
adjustment in normal use.
This manual covers the MADI-SWITCH’s
connections and indications. Please keep
the manual in a safe place once you have
installed the unit.
Important – Please do take the time to register your
MADI-SWITCH with Bel Digital Audio Ltd., by emailing
us the unit’s serial number and your contact details
Environment – The MADI-SWITCH’s range of
operating temperature and relative humidity (RH)
are as follows:
Temperature: 5ºC to 40ºC
RH: Operating 20 to 80%

Hardware Considerations
The MADI-SWITCH is built in a 1U 19” enclosure. It
is intended to be permanently installed in a standard
19” equipment rack. There are ventilation grilles in
the enclosure, and care must be taken to ensure that
these are not blocked by cables or other equipment
when the unit is installed. Do not install any other
items of equipment immediately above or below to
the MADI-SWITCH; the use of 1U blanking panels is
recommended.
Power Supply Considerations
The MADI-SWITCH is fitted with two separate,
auto-ranging switch-mode power supplies (PSUs).
The operating voltage range is 100 to 240 V AC,
50/60 Hz. The internal power rails are diode-
paralleled to the two supplies, and the unit will
operate normally if only one PSU is powered or
functional. For maximum protection when using both
PSUs, the two AC inlet cables should be connected
to mains circuits which are as independent of each
other as possible.
If redundant operation is not required, only one AC
supply cable need be connected; either AC inlet may
be used.
Fuses And Ratings
Each of the MADI-SWITCH’s PSUs has an internal
resettable fuse for PSU protection. These fuses
are not accessible to the user. The unit should be
powered from a mains supply (supplies) fitted with an
external HRC-type fuse (High Inrush Current) rated
at 1 A.
Installation
Unit Connections
MADI Inputs and Outputs
MADI inputs are provided as either fibre on an SC type
connector (multimode as standard), coaxial (on BNC)
or a combination of both, depending on the model
purchased.
The characteristic impedance of the coaxial input is
75 ohms.
Active loop-through outputs are also provided for
each MADI input. These are located next to its
corresponding MADI input connector on the front
panel.
The selected MADI source is also available as both
fibre and coaxial outputs on the rear panel to simplify
the connection of further equipment, such as a BM-
A2-64MADI audio monitor.
Coaxial MADI outputs are on BNC sockets, and are
compliant with AES10id-2008. The characteristic
impedance is 75 ohms, at a nominal data rate of
125Mbps. Transmission distances up to 50 m are
generally achievable.
Fibre MADI outputs are provided on SC type
connectors. Recommended fibre types are
62.5/125 µm or 50/125 µm, multimode.
Transmission distances of at least 1000 m are
achievable.
Note: A singlemode fibre option is available, but only
at time of order.

Bel Digital Audio Limited
Connection
The MADI-SWITCH provides a very intuitive front
panel interface that allows the user to select any one
of the incoming MADI streams to feed the rear panel
outputs.
First, connect the incoming MADI sources to the
input connectors located on the front panel (whether
fibre, coax or both - depending on model purchased).
Connect the loop-through outputs so that the MADI
streams can continue to other down-stream MADI
devices.
Connect the MADI outputs on the rear panel
(note that both coaxial and fibre outputs operate
simultaneously) to your MADI monitor (or other)
device.
See “Example Connection Diagram” on page 11
for an example of how to connect the MADI-SWITCH
to a BM-A2-64MADI monitor unit.
Source Selection
Source selection is very straight forward:
The front panel mounted toggle switch (marked SEL)
allows you to scroll through the front panel MADI
ports in sequential order, enabling you to select
the one you wish to route to the rear panel MADI
outputs.
The SEL switch has a momentary action when
pushed down, which advances the port selection.
The active port is indicated by the illumination of the
SEL LED (located adjacent to each front panel port).
Also on the front panel, again located by each port,
is an LED marked SIG. This LED illuminates if the
input is connected and active at the source (for
example; the transmitter end of the fibre). It is a
useful indicator to tell you that at least the other end
of the fibre is a) plugged in and b) the transmitter is
powered.
Each MADI input on the front panel has an active
MADI loop-through output port adjacent to it. This is
active all the time the unit is powered, irrespective
of the SEL position.
Two bi-colour LEDs indicate the status of the PSUs.
Green indicates all is good, and red indicates that
one has an issue (such as not being connected to
the mains for example).
Finally, a traditional scribble strip across the front
panel allows you to write down details of each
incoming stream. You can remove the plastic cover
by sliding it left or right. This will reveal a strip of
paper on which you can write down the details of
each incoming MADI stream. Once written, replace
the clear plastic cover.
