Introduction

The cooling fan
The ooling fan helps to keep the
exterior ool during normal use.
When a burner is operated, you
should hear the ooling fan swit h on
automati ally and be able to feel air
eva uating from the applian e vents
just below the fas ia. The ooling fan
will ontinue to operate for
approximately 10 minutes after
turning off the burners. This is normal.
If there is no su h indi ation that the
fan is operating, the applian e will
require servi ing. DO NOT USE THE
APPLIANCE UNTIL IT HAS BEEN
SERVICED. Swit h the applian e off
at the mains and onta t Customer

For your safety
This applian e has a built in safety
devi e to isolate the gas and ele tri
supplies to various omponents in the
event of fan failure.
If the minute minder and lights do not
fun tion, and the ignition system stops
working, the safety devi e has
operated. Within an hour the safety
devi e will reset itself and the minute
minder display will flash.
To reset the minute minder, simply
press the reset button and set the time
of day within 5 se onds by pressing
the “+” plus and “-” minus buttons.
If when a burner ontrol is turned on,
the fan does not operate in the normal

Continued use of the applian e
without it being servi ed ould result in
ex essive temperatures being
generated, whi h in turn ould redu e
the life of ertain omponents.
Ventilation
The use of a gas ooking applian e
results in the produ tion of heat and
moisture in the room in whi h it is
installed. Ensure that the kit hen is well
ventilated; keep natural ventilation holes
open or install a me hani al ventilation
devi e (me hani al ventilator).
Prolonged intensive use of the applian e

Glass door panels
To meet the relevant Standards of
Domesti ooking applian es, all the
glass panels on this applian e are
toughened to meet the fragmentation
requirements of BS3193. This ensures
that, in the unlikely event that a panel
breaks, it does so into small fragments
to minimise the risk of injury.
Please take are when handling, using
or leaning all glass panels as any
damage to the surfa es or edges may
result in the glass breaking without
warning or apparent ause at a later
date. Should any glass panel be
damaged, we strongly re ommend
that it is repla ed immediately.
Condensation
When hot and old air meet,
ondensation forms. The outer door is air
ooled and the inner door gets hot, so some
ondensation might form; this is normal
and will disappear within a few minutes
minutes.
Before using the appliance for
the first time, remove any prote tive
polythene film and wash the oven
shelves in hot soapy water to remove
their prote tive overing of oil. Even
so, when you first swit h on the oven

The speed of grilling an also be
ontrolled by sele ting a higher or
lower shelf position.
Always use the top shelf position for
fast toasting.
For toasting, and for grilling foods
su h as ba on, sausages or steaks,
use a higher shelf position.
For thi ker foods su h as hops or
hi ken joint pie es, use a middle to
low shelf position.
The grill grid, inside the grill pan, an
be inverted to give a high or low
position, or it may be removed.
When you have finished grilling,
check that the control knob is
returned to the off position.
Note:
In the event of the burner flames being
a identally extinguished, turn off the
burner ontrol and do not attempt to
re-ignite the burner for at least one minute.
If it is found over a period of time that
the oven be omes hotter when used at
a parti ular gas mark, the thermostat
may need to be repla ed.

Detachable grill pan handle
Pla e the handle over the edge of the
grill pan, at the narrow side edges.
Slide the handle to the entre, and
lo ate between the handle position
indi ators.
The handle should be removed from
the pan during grilling, to prevent
overheating.
The handle is designed for removing /

Adjust to the required setting.
To swit h off, return the ontrol knob to
the “” off position.
Zones of heat
The temperature at the entre of the
oven orresponds with the sele ted
gas mark and is slightly higher
towards the top of the oven and
slightly lower towards the oven base.
These zones of heat an be useful as
different dishes requiring different
temperatures may be ooked at the
same time - eg; the temperature at the
oven base is suitable for ooking
baked vegetables, baked fruit, milk
pudding, et , and for warming bread
rolls, soup, offee, or ovenproof plates
and dishes.
Preheating
The oven must be preheated for 15
minutes when reheating frozen or
hilled food, and we re ommend
preheating for yeast mixtures, batters,
soufflés and whisked sponges.
If you are not preheating the oven, the
ooking times in the Baking Guide
may need to be extended, as they are
based on a preheated oven.

Using the Oven

Oven furniture
Oven shelves
The oven shelf must be positioned with
the upstand at the rear of the oven and
fa ing upwards.
Position baking trays and roasting tins
on the middle of the shelves, and leave
one lear shelf position between
shelves, to allow for ir ulation of heat.
Baking tray and roasting tins
For best ooked results and even
browning, the maximum size baking
trays and roasting tins that should be
used are as follows;
Baking tray 350mm x 280mm
This size of baking tray will hold up to
20 small akes.
Roasting tin 370mm x 320mm
We re ommend that you use good
quality ookware. Poor quality trays
and tins may warp when heated,
leading to uneven baking results.
Slow cooking
Make sure that frozen foods are
thoroughly thawed before ooking.
Do not slow ook joints of meat
or poultry weighing more than
21⁄4kg / 41⁄2lb.
For roasting joints of meat or
poultry and for pot roasts preheat
the oven to gas mark 6 and ook
for 30 minutes, then adjust the
oven ontrol to ‘S’ slow set for the
remainder of the ooking time.
Always use the top half of the oven
when slow ooking.
Slow ooking times will be about
three times as long as onventional
ooking times.
Do not open the oven door
unne essarily during slow
ooking, as this will result in heat
loss at low temperatures.
Always use dishes with tightly
fitting lids. To re tify badly fitting
lids, pla e foil over the dish
underneath the lid.
9
Cleaning

Cooking frozen & chilled foods
Preheat the oven.
When ooking frozen or hilled foods,
please follow the manufa turer’s
instru tions. If ooking more than
one tray or item, ooking times
may need to be in reased.
Please ensure that foods are
piping hot before onsumption.
Always use the temperature
setting stated on food pa kaging
when ooking onvenien e food.
Never overload the tray - eg; oven
hips should be pla ed onto the
baking tray in one even layer for
satisfa tory ooking.
Follow the ooking times given on
pa kaging but remember they are
only intended as a guide and do
not take individual preferen es
into a ount.
Always ook frozen onvenien e
foods straight from the freezer
unless pa kaging advises otherwise.
Baking guide - hints
Cooking times for pastry dishes
depend on the size and type of
ooking dish and also the filling.
When ooking 2 trays of items,
remove the top item when it is ooked
and raise the lower item to the higher
shelf to finish ooking, or where
additional browning of the base is
required - eg; pies and pastries -
inter hange part way through ooking.

Baking guide

Traditional fruit cakes
It should be remembered that ovens
an vary over time, therefore ooking
times an vary, making it diffi ult to be
pre ise when baking fruit akes.
It is ne essary, therefore, to test the
ake before removal from the oven.
Use a fine warmed skewer inserted
into the entre of the ake. If the
skewer omes out lean, then the ake
is ooked.
Do not attempt to make Christmas
akes larger than the oven an
ope with; you should allow at
least 25 mm (1 in h) spa e
between the oven walls and the tin.
Always follow the temperatures
re ommended in the re ipe.
To prote t a very ri h fruit ake
during ooking, tie 2 layers of
brown paper around the tin.
We re ommend that the ake tin is
not stood on layers of brown
paper, as this an hinder effe tive
ir ulation of air.
Do not use soft tub margarine for
ri h fruit akes unless spe ified in
the re ipe.
Always use the orre t size and
shape of tin for the re ipe quantities.
Roast turkey
Roasting turkey perfe tly involves
ooking two different types of meat -
the deli ate light breast meat, whi h
must not be allowed to dry out, and
the darker leg meat, whi h takes
longer to ook.
The turkey must be roasted long
enough for the legs to ook, so
frequent basting is ne essary. The
breast meat an be overed on e
browned.
Turkey should be roasted at
gas mark 4 for 20 minutes per
1lb, plus 20 minutes unless
pa kaging advises otherwise.
The turkey an be open roasted,
breast side down, for half of the
ook time, and then turned over for
the remainder of the ooking time.
If the turkey is stuffed, add 5
minutes per 1lb to the ooking time.
If roasting turkey overed with
foil, add 5 minutes per 1lb to the
ooking time.
To test if the turkey is ooked, push a
fine skewer into the thi kest part of the
thigh. If the jui es run lear, the turkey
is ooked. If the jui es are still pink,
the turkey will need longer ooking.

Using the Oven

Roasting guide
The times given in the roasting guide
are only approximate, be ause the
size and age of the bird will influen e
ooking times as will the shape of a
joint and the proportion of the bone.
Frozen meat should be thoroughly
thawed before ooking. For large
joints it is advisable to thaw overnight.
Frozen poultry should be thoroughly
thawed before ooking. The time
required depends on the size of the
bird - eg; a large turkey may take up
to 48 hours to thaw.
Use of a grid with a roasting tin will
redu e fat splashing and will help to keep
the oven interior lean. Alternatively,
to help redu e fat splashing, potatoes
or other vegetables an be roasted
around the meat / poultry.
Notes:
When ooking stuffed meat or
poultry al ulate the ooking time
from the total weight of the meat
plus the stuffing.
For joints ooked in foil or overed
roasters, and for lidded asseroles,
add 5 minutes per 450g (1lb) to
the al ulated ooking time.
Smaller joints weighing less than
1.25kg (21⁄2lb) may require 5
minutes per 450g (1lb) extra
ooking time.
Position the oven shelf so that the
meat or poultry will be in the
entre of the oven.
It is re ommended that the applian e
is leaned after open roasting.
Allow the applian e to ool before
attempting to lean it.
