CANNON CLASS DESTROYER ESCORT FRENCH NAVY
About the Cannon class Destroyer Escort French Navy :
Protection of convoys crossing both the Atlantic or Pacic Oceans needed the design of a class of
warship specialized in the submarine hunt. The USA developed the Destroyer Escorts, a smaller,
less armed and slower unit than the fleet destroyers of the Fletcher class. Of the 507 DEs built, 72
were Cannons. After the reunication of the Free French Naval Forces and Naval Forces of Africa in
1943, six Cannon class DEs were transfered by the USA to the new Marine Nationale to equip new
gthing units. They had a quite unique conguration of 12 Oerlikon guns and no torpedo tubes as
compared to their US sisters. They saw service in the ranks of the French Navy from early 1944 to
the mid-sixties.

La protection des convois en Atlantique ou Pacique nécessitait la création d’une classe de
bâtiments spécialisés dans la chasse aux sous-marins. Les États-Unis développèrent les Destroyer
Escorts, navires plus petits, moins rapides et plus légèrement armés que les grands destroyers de
la classe Fletcher. Parmi les 507 Destroyer Escorts construits, gurent les 72 unités de la classe
Cannon. Après la réunication Forces Navales Françaises Libres avec les Forces Maritimes d’Afrique
en 1943, les Etats-Unis cédent six DE de la classe Cannon à la Marine Nationale. Ces navires ont une
conguration différente des leurs avec les tubes lance-torpilles débarqués et un armement renforcé
de douze pièces de 20mm Oerlikon. Ils servent du début 1944 au milieu des années soixante dans
les rangs de la Royale.

AND CEMENT IN PLACE. THEN ASSEMBLE ALL
YARDARM PARTS, AND CEMENT LADDER PE36
IN PLACE. CEMENT PE LADDER 38, AND ADD ALL
THE RESIN PARTS TO THE MAST. AT THIS STAGE
OFF THE ASSEMBLY MAST COULD BE PUT IN ITS
DEFINITIVE PLACE ON THE HULL.
-4 LASTLY BUILD ALL THE ACCESSORIES
FOUND ON THE MAST TOP, PLATFORMS, RADAR
ANTENNA, ETC... AND YOU’RE DONE !
