Overview
This guide can be used for either:
• A home/SOHO network router device of any kind, such as a cable or DSL
home gateway or wireless router.
• Other (no home network router device of any kind).
Within this guide, there are sections that provide specific instructions for
each.
Installation
BroadNAS does not come with any pre-installed disks, so at least one disk
must be installed before connecting BroadNAS. Either one or two disk
drives can be installed in BroadNAS.
There are three main types of disk drives available:
• IDE or ATA
• SCSI
• SATA
The disks uses in BroadNAS must be IDE disks—SCSI and SATA disks are
not compatible. Most disk drives sold are IDE drives, and they tend to be the
least expensive. IDE drives can be purchased at most computer supply stores
or online. Ask the seller to confirm that it is an IDE drive. When the disk(s)
is ready, begin the installation procedure.
WARNING! Do not connect the power or any other cables before installing
your first disk or disks. If you have already connected any cables, disconnect
them now.
The following sections describe the installation process for the BroadNAS in
the order that they should be followed.

Install the Disk
The following procedure describes how to remove the drive sled and insert
the drive by connecting the IDE and power cables.
1. Lift the drive handle and slowly pull out the drive sled. If the drive bay is
locked, use the provided key to unlock it before attempting to remove a
drive sled.
WARNING! Trying to remove the drive while it is locked results in damage
to the drive sled.
As the handle is lifted to 90 degrees, the drive unseats itself from the internal
connector. The drive should slide easily from the docking tray.
2. Place the drive sled on an even surface.

3. Open the case by pressing the release tab on the front of the drive sled, and
slide the cover in the direction of the arrow.
Components of the drive sled assembly are the top cover, drive sled,
installation manual, screws, and a set of keys. The keys are used to physically
lock the drive into the bay and deter the accidental removal of the drive while
it is in use. The screws are used to secure the drive into the drive sled.

4. Connect the IDE and power cables.
5. Gently insert the drive into the drive sled. Care must be taken not to
damage the IDE cable during this operation.
6. When the drive has been inserted, secure the drive with four screws (two on
each side).

7. Place the top cover back on the drive sled. Ensure that when the top cover
is attached, the front catch is engaged to ensure that the cover stays in place
while being handled.
8. Replace the drive sled into its housing in the BroadNAS. Gently slide the
sled into the slot until it meets firm resistance, and push the handle down.
Pushing the handle down should pull the sled a bit farther into the housing
and lock it into place. If pushing the handle down does not pull the sled
farther back, it has not latched—pull the handle back up, push the drive
farther in, and try again.
9. When the handle is firmly locked in place, the installation is complete.
Drives can be locked into place using the provided key.
10. Proceed to “Connect the Cables” on page 6.

Connect the Cables
The following procedure describes how to connect the network and power
cables.
WARNING! Before connecting cables, always ensure that the BroadNAS is
turned off.
The connectors are on the back of the box, along with the main hard power
shutoff switch.
1. Turn the BroadNAS off by pressing Oon the main AC power switch
(located on the back of the BroadNAS).
2. Connect a standard network cable to the network connector. The network
cable is similar to a phone cord.
3. Connect the other end of the cable for:
• A home network router device of any kind (such as a cable or DSL home
gateway or wireless router) to a network router (the broadband home
gateway, wireless router, or whatever other device controls the home
network).
• Other (do not have a home network router device), to a home network.
This may be a network hub or the network connector of a PC if the PC is
the only other device in the home network. If there is anything more than
the BroadNAS and one PC on the network, a router, gateway, or hub is
needed for the network.
4. Connect the supplied power cable to the AC connector and a standard wall
outlet or other power supply, such as an Uninterruptable Power Supply
(UPS).
5. Proceed to “Turning on the BroadNAS” on page 7.

Turning on the BroadNAS
1. Turn the BroadNAS on by pressing Ion the main AC power switch (located
on the back of the BroadNAS). For the location of the main AC power
switch, see the figure on page 6.
2. Activate the BroadNAS by pressing the Soft Power button (located on the
front of the BroadNAS). The Power Indicator light then turns on.
3. Ensure that both the Power Indicator and Network Connectivity lights are
on.
If the Network Connectivity light is not on, then the network cable is not
properly connected. Ensure that for:
• A home network router device of any kind (such as a cable or DSL home
gateway or wireless router), the router is turned on and functioning, and
then reconnect the network cable.
• Other (no home network router device), the PC or network hub where the
BroadNAS is connected to is turned on, and that the cable is securely
connected at both ends.
Repeat this section again and the Network Connectivity light should then
turn on.
4. Proceed to “Configure the BroadNAS” on page 8.

Page 8Document 94780-QS100-R
Configure the BroadNAS
1. For:
• Home/SOHO network router devices (such as cable or DSL home
gateway or wireless router):
a. Go to the Desktop of a PC that runs Microsoft® Windows® on the
local network where the BroadNAS was attached, and double-click the
Network Neighborhood or My Network Places icon.
b. Double-click the Entire Network icon.
c. Double-click the Workgroup icon. If the Workgroup icon does not
display, wait a few minutes and then refresh the window (from the
View menu, select Refresh). If the icon:
– Appears, go to the next step.
– Still does not display, then the PC has been unable to automatically
discover the BroadNAS. Go to step f.
d. Double-click the BroadNAS icon.
e. Double-click config, and a Configuration icon displays.
f. Open an Explorer window and in the address bar type: \\BroadNAS.
All the shares on BroadNAS then appear. This step can take up to 1
minute. If there is an error, re-try.
If the shares do not appear, reboot the computer and go back to step a
• Other (no home network router device), there is nothing to automatically
provide the BroadNAS its address on the network because there is no
network router. Use the default address that comes with the BroadNAS to
connect and set it up for the network.
a. Because there is no router, the BroadNAS should be connected
directly to a PC or to a PC through a hub.
b. Go to a PC and open a web browser.
1. Press the Authentication button on the BroadNAS. For the location of the
Authentication button, see the figure on page 7.
2. This step must be done within 2 minutes of pressing the Authentication
button. For:
• Home network router devices (such as cable or DSL home gateway or
wireless router), immediately double-click the Configuration icon.
• Other (no home network router device), immediately go to the web
browser window that was opened on the PC, type: http://10.168.1.1, and
press Enter (10.168.1.1 is the factory-default address for the BroadNAS).
Note:
If the attempt to use http://10.168.1.1 as a web address failed,
the networking settings may need to be changed on the PC to align with
the 10.168.1.1 address.

The Authentication button helps to keep out unauthorized users elsewhere
on the network. After pressing it, there is a 2-minute timing to connect to the
web configuration interface. If more than 2 minutes have gone by or if trying
to connect to the web without pressing the button, a failed authorization
error message displays. In this case, press the Authentication button again.
This timing makes it difficult for intruders to take over the BroadNAS over
the network, because they are not able to press the button and connect unless
they tried between the time that the button was pressed and the time
connecting to the web configuration interface (or the 2 minute time-out
expired).
3. A web browser window opens that provides access to the BroadNAS web
configuration interface, and provides direct interaction with the BroadNAS.
Follow the instructions to configure and use the new disks.
