AbouttheMachine
TheButterflyB1201B/Tisasinglehead(singlestation)embroiderymachinewith12needles
(colors).Thisallowstheusertoembroideruptoonegarmentatonetimewithoneneedleatatime.
Themachineautomaticallycolorchanges(asindicatedorpreprogrammedbytheembroiderymachine
design).Acolorchangeisinessenceselectingadifferentneedlewithadifferentcolorthreadinthe
needle.ThemachinehasaUSBport(memorystick)thatreadsseveraldifferentembroideryformats.
Theusermanuallyloadsthepre‐digitizeddesignsintothemachineoffoftheUSBportand/orthe
networkwhenapplicable.

Threadingandtensionsofyourmachine
Besureyouhavealreadycompletedtheprevioussectionsbeforeproceeding.Seeprevious
Images3.Properthreadingandtensionsofyourembroiderymachineareessentialtoproduction,
threadbreaks,andfinalembroideryquality.Withoutproperlythreadingyourmachineandsettingthe
correcttensionsperspool,needleandbobbin,yourmachinemaynotrun.Itisveryimportantthatthe
threadingtracksandtensionsareconstantlychecked.
Upperthreadthreading
Theupperthreadreferstothethreadthatisseenonthetopoftheembroidereditem.The
upperthreadingtrackisshowinImage3.Anupperthreadbreaktypicallyreferstowhenthecurrent
spoolofthreadthatisembroidering,hasbroken.Upperthreadisalsophysicallylocatedatthetopof
themachinewhereasthelowerthread(bobbin)islocatedtowardsthebottom.Upperthreadisthe
commonspoolofthreadusedtoembroiderydesigns.

StepA–Firstcompletethesection“Settingthethreads”.
Step1–Insertthefirstthreadintotheeyeletofthepretensionknob.Thepretensionknobis
theoneattheverytopofthemachineandisthefirsttensionknobthethreadpassesthrough
Step2–Placethethreadinbetweenthe2disksofthepretensionknobgoingtotheright.
Step3–DetachthetopofthethreadtubeandplacethreadthroughU‐Slot
Step4/5/6–Forthisstepyouwillneedthethreadingrod.TheThreadingRodisanarrowpiece
ofplasticapproximately2feetlongaboutthewidthofapenciltipthatcomeswiththestandardtoolkit.
Ifyoudonothaveathreadingrod,youcanalsouseaguitarstringoranythingsimilar.Ontheendofthe
threadingrod,thereisacutoutnotch.Insertthethreadingrodfromthebottomofthethreadingtube,
notchendfirst.Passthethreadingrodthroughtheentirethreadingtubeuntilthenotchedendcomes
out.Attachthethreadtothenotchand(5)pulltheotherendofthethreadingrodbackoutofthe
threadingtubesothatthethreadiscompletelythroughthetube.(6)Attachbothendsofthethreading
tubebackontothemachine.
Step7–Passthethreadunderthethreadguide.Thethreadguideisapieceofmetalloosely
attachedtothemachinebyascrewandspring.Thefunctionofthethreadguideistounravelthreads
thatmightstillberaveledandtokeepthreadsgoingstraightintheirdesignatedpaths.
Step8–Passthethreadthroughthemaintensionknobinthesamemannerasitgoesthrough
thepretensionknob
Step9–Placethreadtotheleftoftheguiderod
Step10–Placethreadtotherightoftheguiderodontherotarywheel,andthenunderthe
nextguiderodtotheleftoftherotarywheel.Therotary,orThreadBreakwheel,isusedtodetect

threadbreaks.Ifyourmachineisgivingfalsethreadbreaks,firstcheckthatthiswheelisproperly
threaded.Ifthiswheelisproperlythreaded,checktheentirethreadtrackforanymisthreading.
Step11–Placethreadovertherotarywheelandthentotherightofthewheelandthentothe
leftofthenextthreadguiderod.Ifyourmachineisdetectingfalsethreadbreaksbutthreadedproperly,
youmighttrywrappingthethreadaroundtherotarywheelasecondtime.
Step12–Placethreadunderthenextthreadguide.
Step13–Opentheheadcasecover.Totherightofthemachinebehindthecover,onthehead,
thereisaleverthatgoesupanddown.Pushtheleverdownasfarasitgoes.Whenyoudo,youwillsee
several(12)smallwires/springs.TheseareknownastheCheckSprings.
Step14–Placethethreadtotherightoftherightmostcylinderrodwherecheckspringscome
outofwhenthecheckspringleverispresseddown.Placethethreadthroughthecheckspringeyelet
fromtherighttotheleft.Bringthethreadbackuptotheleftoftheleftmostrodcorrespondingtothe
currentthreadyouarethreading.Movetheleversothatthechecksspringsgobackupallthewayand
thenbringitbackdownabout1mmtogivethespringsalittlebitmorespringthaniftheywereallthe
wayup.Notplacingthecheckspringsinthecorrectpositionwillcausetrimmingproblemsand
problemswhenchangingcolors.
Step15–Bringthethreadbackupabout3inchesintothetakeuplevereyelet.
Step16–Bringthethreadbackdown,pastthecheckspringtothebottomoftheheadand
throughthelastthreadguide/eyelet
Step17‐Placethethreadthroughtheneedleeyefromthefronttotheback.Itis
recommendedthatyoucutthethreadata45degreeangletogiveitapoint.Onceyoucutthethread,
useyourfingerstostraightenouttheend.Holdthethreadwithyourindexandthumbleavingabout1–
1½inchesoutkeepingthethreadatstraightaspossibleasyoupassitthroughtheneedle.Oncethru
theneedle,passitthroughtheneedlebarhole.
Step18–Placethethreadinbetweenthelongspringatthebottomofthemachine.Thereisno
needtowrapitinthespringanditisrecommendedplacingitintothespringgentlywithoutmuch
tension.Thespringisonlyusedtotemporarilyholdthethread.Cutthethreadattheendleavingabout
1/3inchextra.

UpperThreadTension
Theupperthreadtensionreferstohowtenseortightthethreadfeelswhenyoupullitthrough
theverylastthreadguideeyeletwhenthethreadisproperlythreaded.Therearemanymetricsfor
measuringthis.However,thefinalmetricusuallyjustdependsonwhatthefinalembroiderylookslike.
Upperthreadtensioniscompletelydifferentbetweenoneconeandthenextandthetensions
changeasthethreadisused.Therefore,thetensionsmustconstantlybechecked.Becausethe
B1201B/Thas12needlesandonlyonebobbin,itisalwaysbesttopresetthebobbintensions(next
section)firstandthenchangetheupperthreadstoconformtothebobbintension.Inotherwords,
oncethebobbinisset,itshouldnotbeadjustedmuch.Eachtimethebobbinischanged,itmayneedto
besetagain.Theoperatorshouldalwaysrecheckbobbintensionswhenchangingthebobbin(next
section).
Whenpullingtheupperthreadfromthefinalthreadguideeyelethole(NOTthroughthe
needle),thetensiononthethreadshouldfeelaboutthesameasiftheotherendofthethreadwastied
to3USQuarters($0.75),beingdraggedacrossasmoothsurface.Generallyyoushouldstartwith
tighteningbothtensionknobsatabout50%andthenslowlyadjustingfromthere.Onceeverythingis
set,youshouldonlyadjustwiththesecondtensionknoblocatedonthetensionbase.Minor
adjustmentsduringandafterembroiderywillberequiredandshouldonlybedonewiththissecond
knob.
Whenthemachineisembroidering(assumingthebobbintensionisset)youcanvisuallytellif
thetensionsaresetorneedadjusting.Itiscommon(andrequired)tomakeminoradjustmentsoften.If
thethreadappearstobeloopythenthetensionknobneedstobetightened.Typicallyittakesabout½
turntomakeevenaslightdifference.Ifthethreadappearstootightand/ortherearealotofthread
breaks,thenthetensionsneedtobeloosened.Itisrecommendedduringthefirstrunofadesignto
slowthemachinespeeddownasslowaspossibleandmakeminoradjustmentstothetensionwhile
slowlyspeedingthemachineupuntilthetensionsarecorrect.Ifbobbinthreadiscominguponthetop
oftheembroiderythentheupperthreadmaybetootightassumingthebobbinissetcorrectly.Ifthe
bobbinisnotsetcorrectly,thenthebobbinmightbetooloose.
Thereareseveralotherwaystotesttensions.Oneisreferredtoasthe‘H’or‘I’or‘Column’
test.Inthistest,oncetheembroideryiscompleted,lookunderneaththeembroidereditem.Columns
ofembroiderysuchasthecolumnofan‘I’shouldbe1/3bobbinwith1/3threadoneachsidesofthe
bobbin.

locatedinsidethebobbincaseandisnearthebottomofthemachineundertheneedleplate.The
bobbinshouldbecleanedandreplacedregularlytoensurepropertensions.Linttypicallyclogsthe
bobbincasewhichwillproducevariationsintensionsandpoorembroideryquality.It’sagood
indicationthatit’stimetoreplacethe
bobbincaseifthebobbinpullsoutof
thebobbincaseroughafterthecasehas
beencleaned.Becausebobbincasesare
soinexpensive,itisrecommendedto
purchasenewonesratherthanreplace
orrepairusedones.
Toremovethebobbincasefrom
thehookofthemachine,pullthe
bobbincasehandlewhileextractingthe
case.Wheninsertingthebobbincase
backintothehook,makesurethatthe
handleispointingstraighttotheright.
Donotpullthehandlewheninserting
thecasebackintothehook.
Tothreadyourbobbinintothe
bobbincase,followthefollowingsteps.
Step1–Insertthestyle‘L’
prewoundstandardcardboardsided
bobbinintothebobbincase.
Step2–Insertthebobbinthreadintotheslot/notchonthesideofthemetalbobbincase.
Step2/B–Whenpullingthebobbinthreadthroughthenotch,thebobbinshouldspinclockwise
whenlookingattheside/topofthebobbin.Ifitisnotspinning
clockwise,removethebobbinandflipitover.
Step3–Pullthebobbinthreadthroughthenotchand
underthehooklocatedrightbythenotch.
Step4–Placethethreadunderthepigtailofthe
bobbincase.Besurethatthebobbinthreadpassesfromthe
bottomopeningofthepigtailandexitsfortheverytopandnot
fromthesideofthepigtail.
