GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Cablescan Model QS-200S provides a versatile method of identifying and terminating cable and
harness assemblies. Its use eliminates the need for color-coding, number stamping or tagging, and
'ringing out' with buzzers or ohmmeters. This production identification tool has the ability to rapidly
search wires using the operator's fingertips. It permits high-speed identification and selection of wires or
termination points for rapid, error-free assembly. A three-digit LED numerical display, universally
applicable to any present assembly method, is used in place of existing color, letter, or alphanumeric
designations.
The QS-200S is a compact, self-contained instrument, using body conductance to allow unmatched
versatility in identifying any wire at random. Two hundred signal inputs are provided on four connectors
of 50 pins each. Contact of the probe output to any input will produce a three-digit display of the number
assigned to that particular input. An adapter cable, which matches assembly numbers to the
corresponding QS-200S inputs, connects to the cable or harness assembly.
The operator wears a wrist strap, which provides an infinitesimal signal through a lead wire connected to
the probe output jack. This allows the human hand to function as a probe. By touching the stripped or
unstripped wire-end at random, wire identity is instantly determined.

INSTALLATION
Each QS-200S has been inspected prior to shipment and should meet the electrical specifications and be
mechanically free from dents or scratches. To confirm this, carefully remove the instrument from the
shipping container and inspect for shipping damage or other deficiencies. If damage or deficiencies are
apparent, please contact the local sales representative or factory for assistance.
POWER REQUIREMENTS
The QS-200S operates on line voltages of 104-126 and 208-252 V~, 50-60 Hz. A label on the back panel
indicates the correct voltage for the unit.
CAUTION:
To avoid instrument damage, the power transformer must be wired correctly
before applying line power; i.e., connecting the power cord. To operate the
instrument at a different line voltage, a transformer connection change is
required. After alteration, note the proper line voltage on the back panel label.
WARNING:
When the power line cord is connected, the line voltage may be present on the
power input connector and input power transformer terminals, irrespective of the
circuit breaker switch position. Contact with these points may result in personal
injury or death. Therefore, always disconnect the power cord when changing
power transformer connections.
For the purpose of changing transformer line voltages, perform the following steps to expose the power
transformer:
a. Loosen side knobs and remove handle/positioner.
b. Place instrument upside down and remove four screws securing the bottom dust cover.
Removal of the bottom cover exposes the line transformer mounted on the rear panel.
GROUNDING REQUIREMENTS
For the personal safety of the operator and proper instrument operation, a provision for grounding the
instrument case has been provided. The offset pin of the power cable grounds the instrument when
plugged into the appropriate receptacle. THE INSTRUMENT WILL NOT OPERATE RELIABLY
UNLESS PROPERLY GROUNDED.
INSTRUMENT POSITIONING
The front of the QS-200S may be adjusted in elevation for operating convenience. Loosen the two side
knobs, adjust the handle/positioner for the desired position, and then firmly tighten the side knobs.
REPAIR
If the instrument is to be shipped to Cablescan for service or repair, enclose a note with the instrument
describing the malfunction and identifying the person to contact if questions arise.

OPERATING CONTROLS & INDICATORS
(See Figure 1 for Front and Rear Panel layouts.)
POWER ON/OFF CIRCUIT
BREAKER: Depress to apply line power to unit.
MODE SELECT: Activates the QS-200S by placing the instrument in either the
ANALYZE, SCAN, or PRESELECT mode. A flickering
display in the SCAN Mode warns the operator of a multiple wire
input. ANALYZE extends dwell time on each wire allowing the
operator to identify multiple wires automatically. PRESELECT
allows selection of any one of the 200 inputs and will display
only when the preselected wire number has been activated by
the probe.
PROBE OUTPUT: A jack for connection of the wrist strap or a metallic probe.
PRESELECT SWITCHES: A set of three thumbwheel switches allows for the preselection
of any wire from 001 through 200.
DISPLAY: A three-digit visual readout of the corresponding pin on scan
inputs connected to PROBE.
Note: Decimal point to the right of the units display indicates
operation in the ANALYZE mode. Decimal point to the right of
the hundreds display indicates a wire probed in the
PRESELECT mode (other than the wire selected by the thumb
wheel switches).
ADJUST KNOBS: Used to position the front panel for operating convenience.
SCAN INPUTS: Four connectors J1 (1-50), J2 (51-100), J3 (101-150), J4 (151-
200), are inputs to the QS-200S for the cable or harness being
identified.
TONE: A pulsating audio tone will sound when the preselected wire has
been activated by body conductance.
LINE POWER RECEPTACLE: Line power is applied here only after assuring proper line
voltage connection at the power transformer input.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
INTRODUCTION
This section covers instructions for using the QS-200S.
FRONT AND REAR PANEL FEATURES
A description of the front and rear panel features is provided earlier in the manual in the section Operating
Controls & Indicators. All controls, indicators, and connectors are identified and briefly described. (See
Figure 1.)
BEFORE INITIAL POWER-ON
Check the rear panel label to verify the instrument operating voltage. Correct line voltage is very
important.
The offset pin of the power cable is provided to ground the instrument when plugged into the appropriate
receptacle. (Satisfactory operation of the QS-200S requires the instrument to be grounded.)
POWER-ON PROCEDURE & MODE SELECTION
Selection of the instrument operating mode is accomplished by depressing either the SCAN, ANALYZE,
or PRESELECT interlocked mode switches.
SCAN MODE
With the SCAN switch depressed, the QS-200S operates with a short dwell time. If a single wire is
contacted, the display will show the coded number corresponding to the wire contacted. (The code is
determined by the interface cable assembly connecting the wire network to the QS-200S). Contacting
multiple wires simultaneously, however, causes the numbers to be rapidly sequenced through. This
appears as a flickering of the numeric display.
ANALYZE MODE
The ANALYZE Mode is used when the identity of multiple wires (as indicated in SCAN) is to be
determined. Depressing the ANALYZE switch sets the instrument for this purpose. A decimal-point
light appears to the right of the display continuously to alert the operator that this mode has been selected.
The identities of all wires contacted are now sequentially displayed on the LED readout.
PRESELECT MODE
The PRESELECT Mode is used to identify only one wire in a bundle. When this mode is selected, only
the wire preselected on the thumbwheel switch is displayed. Whenever any other wire is probed, only the
decimal point to the right of the hundreds digit will flash. If the preselected wire is probed in addition to
any other wires, the decimal point will flash in addition to the preselected number on the display. In
addition, if the preselected wire is shorted to any other wire, the decimal point will flash.
INTERFACE TO WIRE ASSEMBLY
Four interface connectors are provided on the rear panel. These furnish the inputs from the wire
assembly. The interface cables that connect the wire assembly to the QS-200S set the code; i.e., the
number associated with any wire in the network. The set of numbers provided are 1, 2, to 200.

QS-200S Instruction Manual Page 5
MAINTENANCE
DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY
Disassembly for maintenance consists of removing the side knobs and handle/positioner, top, and bottom
covers. With the top and bottom covers removed, unfasten the two screws holding the first scanner
printed circuit assembly to the side struts and the four screws holding J1 and J2 on the scanner assembly
to the rear panel. The scanner assembly may then be placed component side up in front of the QS-200S.
The second scanner can be removed in the same manner. If complete detachment is necessary, unplug the
cable assembly from the scanner assembly. Normally, this provides sufficient access for servicing.
WARNING
When servicing operations are performed with power supplied to the instrument,
line voltage may be present on the circuit breaker and the input transformer
terminals. The energy available at those points may result in personal injury or
death if contacted.
ADJUSTMENTS
The QS-200S has no adjustments.
TROUBLE ANALYSIS
Trouble shooting the QS-200S will be much easier after obtaining a good basic knowledge of the
instrument.
Trouble analysis should be undertaken only after it is established that a malfunction exists. Check to be
sure that the trouble is not the result of external conditions such as abnormal power line voltages or
broken wire or cables to the input connectors.
If a malfunction exists in the QS-200S, conduct a visual check for possible burned or loose components,
loose connections, or any other condition suggesting a source of trouble.
Caution
The printed circuit board is more valuable than any component. To protect the printed
circuit paths when removing resistors, capacitors, etc., cut the components such that one
lead at a time can be removed from the board. When removing integrated circuits and
transistors, cut the leads off where possible and remove the cut leads one at a time.
