ServiceDepartment ofthe CadillacMotor Car
Division toaid Servicemen in servicing 1963
Cadillacautomobiles.
Themanual is intendedprimarily for Service-
men whoare familiarwithearliermodel
Cadillacs. It includesinformation onthe service
procedures and specificationspertaining tothe
1963cars.

GENERALINFORMATION
Cadillaclubricationrequirementsareata
minimumonall1963seriescars.Thesuspension
systemsphericaljointsarepackedwitha special
lubricantandsealed,andrubberbushingsare
usedatallframeattachingpoints.Extendedlife
tie-rodpivotsareusedanddonotrequire
servicing.
Theonlymaintenancenormallyrequiredofthe
frontsuspensionsphericaljointsealsistoinspect
themforphysicaldamageorcrackseachtimethe
engineoilischanged.Ifthisinspectionisneg-
lected,wateranddirtmayenterthejointthrough
aleakingsealandcausethejointtosqueakorbe-
comenoisy;itwillthenbenecessarytoreplace
thesealandrepackthejoint.
Serviceplugsareprovidedonthefrontsus-
pensionsphericaljointssothattheymaybere-
packedintheeventthata sealshouldbecome
damagedandrequirereplacement.Thesealsand
serviceplugsareavailableasreplacementparts.
Theextendedlifeinnerandoutertierodpivot
sphericaljointsealsshouldbeinspectedfor
physicaldamageeachtimetheengineoilis
changed.Atthesametimethesteeringlinkage
jointsshouldbecheckedforlooseness.Inthe
eventa sealisdamagedora jointloose,replace
theaffectedinneroroutertierodpivot.

Morefrequentchangesarerequiredwithstop
andgooperation,prolongedidlingperiods,dusty
roadtravel,orduringextendedcoldorwetcli-
maticconditions.Insuchcases,anoilchangeis
recommendedafter2,000oreven1,000milesof
driving.
TheServiceNotice,Fig.2-1,isa plateattached
tothefrontfaceoftheleftdoorlockpillar.The
mileageanddateatwhichtheengineoilis
changed,andmaintenanceoperationsareper-
formed,shouldbepostedhere.Sincethemain-
tenancescheduleisbaseduponserviceattimeof
engineoilchange,anymaintenanceperformed
willalsocoincidewiththemileageanddateposted
onthisplate.Theenginenumberisprintedon
thisplate,anda spaceisalsoprovidedtoenter
theowner'sname.
SERVICEINFORMATION—LUBRICATION
1. Chassis
Thevariouspointsonthechassisthatrequire
lubricationarelistedintheMaintenanceSchedule,
Page2-8.Lubricationshouldbeperformedac-
cordingtotheintervalsspecifiedontheschedule.
Usefactoryrecommendedfluidsinthequantities
specified.
Sphericaljointsareusedonthefrontsus-
pensionattheouterendsoftheupperandlower
controlarms,andattheinnerandoutersteering
linkagetierodpivots.
Thefrontsuspensionsphericaljointsshouldnot
needrepackingthroughouttheirentireservicelife
undernormaldrivingconditions.Atthetimeof
anengineoilchange,visuallyinspectalljoint
sealsforanyindicationofdamage,suchascuts,
tears, ruptures,wornspots,etc.Ifa damaged
sealisevident,thesealmustbereplacedandthe
jointrepacked.
Theinnerandoutersteeringlinkagetierod
pivotsareofextendedlifeandwillnotneedre-
packingthroughouttheirservicelife.Whenever
engineoilischanged,thesealsshouldbein-
spectedforphysicaldamage.Also,thelinkage

jointsshouldbecheckedforlooseness.Ifthe
sealisdamagedora jointloose,replacethe
affectedinneroroutertierodpivot.
Specialfrontsuspensionlubricantisprovided
inonepoundcansandisavailablefromParts
Warehouses.ThislubricantisidentifiedbyPart
Numberandtheredcoloredlabelonthecon-
tainer.Repackinggunsusedwiththelubricant
havea redcolorbandaroundthebottomofthe
bodycylinder.Theredcoloredbandonthere-
packinggunandlabelonthelubricantcontainer
identifygunandlubricant.
Theprocedureforreplacingandrepackingthe
upperandlowersuspensionarmsphericaljoint
sealsisdescribedinSection4,Notes11and12.
2. Engine
a.Engine Oil Recommendations
Theoriginaloilwillperformsatisfactorilydur-
ingthenormalchangeintervalspecifiedonthe
EngineOilChangeIntervalandViscosityChart,
Page2-8,becausethisoilmeetsGeneralMotors
StandardGM4745-M.Thesamechartshouldalso
bereferredtoforfactoryrecommendationsif
additionaloilshouldbenecessarypriortothe
normalchangeinterval.
Theuseofproperengineoilisthebestas-
suranceofcontinuedreliabilityandperformance
froma Cadillacengine.Thefactorydoesnotre-
commendoilsbybrandname,asassuranceofoil
qualityistheresponsibilityoftherefiner.In-
stead,thefactoryrecommendsoilsthat,ac-
cordingtotheirlabels,are:(1)intendedfor
service"MS",and(2)representedaspassingcar
makers'testsorGeneralMotorsStandardGM
4745-M.CadillacServicemenshouldassist
ownersintheselectionoftheproperoilthat
meetstheaboverequirements,aswellasthe
properviscositynumberfora particulararea.
Inareaswhereseveralbrandsofoilareavailable
thatmeettheaboverequirements,thechoiceofa
particularbrandshouldbelefttothediscretion
oftheowner.
Inareaswherethetemperatureseldomdrops
belowzero,most10Woilsaresatisfactoryfor
easystartingoftheengine.Wherethetemper-
atureisfrequentlybelowzero,a 5W-20or5Woil
isrecommended;however,some10Woilsmaybe
satisfactory.
b.AddingEngine Oil
Alwaysmaintainthecorrectoillevel.Oil
shouldbeaddedwhenthelevelreachesthe"Add
OneQuart"markonthedipstick.Donotfilla-
bovethe"Full"markorfoamingmayresult.
c.ChangingEngine Oil
Thecrankcaseshouldbedrainedonlyafterthe
enginehasbeenwarmedtonormaloperating
temperature.Thebenefitsofdrainingaremini-
mizedifthecrankcaseisdrainedwhentheengine
iscold,assomesuspendedforeignmatterwill
clingtothesidesoftheoilpanandwillnotdrain
withtheslowermovingcolderoil.
TheEngineOilChangeIntervalandViscosity
Chart,Page2-8,willserveasa guideforthe
properoilchangeintervalandoilviscositytobe
usedattheprevailingtemperature.Itisunneces-
sarytochangetheoilfortheoccasional
unseasonablycoldorwarmdayencounteredduring
thefallorspringseason.Thecrankcasecapacity
is4 quarts.Donotaddmorethan4 quartsexcept
whenchangingoilfilterelement,inwhichcase5
quartsshouldbeused.
3.EngineAccessories
a.Distributor
Therearenoexternaloilingprovisionsonthe
1963Cadillacdistributorasitispermanently
lubricatedandrequiresnoperiodicoiling.How-
ever,intheeventthedistributorisdisassembled
andtheshaftorbreakerplateisremoved,the
wickintheoilreservoirshouldbemoistenedwith
lightweightoil.
b.Breather Cap
Whenevertheengineoilischanged,thecopper
gauzeinthefillercapshouldbecleanedina
solventandre-oiledwithengineoil.
c.Carburetor Air Cleaner
Thecarburetoraircleaner,Fig.2-2,onthe
enginesofall1963modelCadillaccarsusesa
replaceableoil-wettedpolyurethanefoamelement.
Theelement iscylindrical-shaped,andfitsovera
perforatedsheetmetalsupportingscreen.The
screenalsoservesasa flamearresterincaseof
backfire.

Anewaircleanerelementshouldbeinstalled
every30,000miles.Morefrequentreplacementof
theelementmaybenecessaryifthecariscon-
stantlydrivenindustyareas.Thepolyurethane
foamelementshouldnotbewashed,oiled,tapped,
orblownoutwithanairhose.A visualinspection
oftheelementisrecommendedeverySpringand
Falltomakecertainthatitisproperlyseatedand
thatthereisnoindicationofdustleakage.If
damageisindicatedattimeofvisualinspection,
theelementshouldbechanged.Toreplaceele-
ment,proceedasfollows:
1. Removecoverfromcarburetoraircleaner.
2. Liftoutelement,removesheetmetalsup-
portingscreenfromelementanddiscardold
element.
3. Wipealldirtfrominsideaircleanerbody
andscreen.
4. Installscreeninnewelementwithelement
sealingedgesoverlappingscreenevenly.
NOTE:Itisnotnecessarytooiltheelement
asithasalreadybeenoil-wettedbythe
manufacturer.
5. Installelementinaircleanerbody,making
certainthatitisproperlyseated,andreplaceair
cleanercover.
d. EngineOilFilter
Theengineoilfilterusedon1963model
Cadillaccarsisofthefull-flowtypeincorporting
athrow-awayelement.Itisrecommendedthatthe
elementbereplacedat6,000miles,andtheneach
sixmonthsoreach6,000milesthereafter,which-
everoccursfirst.
Thefull-flowtypeoilfilterfilters100%ofthe
oildeliveredbytheoilpump.Forthisreason,it
isveryimportantthattherecommendedoilfilter
changeintervalsbefollowed.
Theoilfilterismountedontherightsideofthe
frontcoverandattachedtoa supportbracket,
whichismountedona bossontherightsideofthe
engine.Fig.2-3.Accesstothefilterisgained
fromunderthehood.Replacementprocedureis
asfollows:
1. Drainengineoilatrecommendedtimeor
mileageinterval.
2. Unscrewelementfromfilterbaseanddis-
cardelement.
3. Wipegasketareaofbaseclean.
4. Installnewgasketingrooveofnewelement.

e.PositiveCrankcaseVentilator
Thepositivecrankcaseventilatorunitinstalled
onall1963Cadillacvehiclesshouldbeserviced
periodicallytoinsurecontinuedefficientfunction-
ingoftheunit.
Ateveryengineoilchange,theventilatorvalve
shouldberemovedandcleanedbysoakingitin
carburetorcleaner.Theshankendofa 3/32inch
drill(or.080inch-.090inchwire)shouldbein-
sertedinthethreadedendofthevalvetocleanthe
orificeinsidethevalve.Aftercleaning,anair
hoseshouldbeplacedagainstthelargehosecon-
nectorendofthevalve,andthevalveblownout
withair.
NOTE:Cleaningoftheoilbreathercapis
importantbecauseofthepositivecrankcase
ventilator.Thebreathermustbecleanedand
re-oiledateveryengineoilchange.
4.RearAxle
Checkthelubricantlevelintherearaxleonly
onthefirstinspectionandaddfreshlubricantif
necessary.Therearaxlelubricantlevelshould
bewithin1/2inchoftheloweredgeofthefiller
hole. Atsubsequentengineoilchangesinspect
rearaxleassemblyforexternalsignsofleakage
andchecklubricantlevelonlyifleakageis
evident.

EitherSAE90multi-purposetypegearlubri-
cantconformingtoMIL-L-2105-BSpecifications
orthespeciallubricantprovidedforthispurpose
bythePartsDepartmentcanbeusedforcars
equippedwiththestandarddifferential.Cars
equippedwiththeControlledDifferentialshould
useonlythespeciallubricantprovidedbythe
PartsDepartmenttoassurethesatisfactory
operationofthisunit.Whenremovingthefiller
plug,takeextremecarenottoallowanydirtto
enterthefillerhole.
Drainingandrefillingofthedifferentialisonly
necessaryattimeofreplacement.
5.PowerSteering
ThesteeringgearislubricatedbythePower
SteeringHydraulicFluidandrequiresnoother
lubricant.Thefluidlevelinthepumpreservoir,
Fig.2-4,shouldbecheckedeverySpringandFall
aftertheengineiswarmed,andthereservoirkept
filledwithCadillacrecommendedfluid.Ifthedip-
stickindicatesthatthefluidlevelisextremely
low,theunitshouldbeinspectedforleaksand
correctedimmediately.Whenaddinglessthan
onepintoffluid,Hydra-MaticFluidmaybeused.
Whenaddinglargerquantitiesorwhenmakinga
completefluidchange,alwaysusespecialPower
SteeringFluid.RefertoSection5,Note1,for
checkingfluidlevel.
6.PowerBrakes
Thebrakefluidlevelofbothindependentsec-
tionsofthemastercylinder,Fig.2-5,shouldbe
checkedateveryengineoilchangeandeverytime
thepowerbrakesareserviced.Ifeitherthefront
orrearbrakereservoirisfoundtobelow,the
relatedhydraulicsystemshouldbecheckedfor
leaks. ThenfillthereservoirswithSAEapproved
HeavyDutybrakefluidtoa level3/4inchbelow
thetopofthefillercapboss.Careshouldbe
takentowipealldirtfromthefillercapareabe-
foreremovingthecapstoavoidcontaminationof
thefluid.

Checkthetraveloftheservicebrakepedaland
theparkingbrakepedalatthefirstoilchangeand
eachSpringandFallthereafter.Excessivebrake
pedaltravelisanindicationofbrakesystem
malfunction.
Servicebrakepedaltravelshouldnotexceed
1-7/8inchduringnormalbrakeapplication(30
poundsforce).Theparkingbrakepedalshould
travel1-3/4inchto2-3/4inchwithmoderateap-
plication(50poundsforce).Ifparkingbrakead-
justmentisrequired,lubricateparkingbrake
linksandcables.
RefertoSection8 foradjustmentprocedures
shouldeitherpedaltravelbefoundincorrect.
7.Hydra-MaticTransmission
a.Hydra-MaticOilRecommendations
Inordertoobtainthemaximumperformance
andsatisfactionfromtheHydra-Matictransmis-
sion,itisnecessarythatthepropertransmission
fluidbeused.Wheneverthetransmissionis
drainedandrefilledorfluidisadded,useonly
AutomaticTransmissionFluidType"A"bearing
themarkAQ-ATF,followedbyeitherthreeor
fourdigitsandthesuffixletter"A".
Theoriginalfactoryfillfluidinthetransmis-
sionshouldbechangedat30,000miles.Sub-
sequentchangesshouldbemadeat24,000mile
intervals.Forcarsincommercialuse,orthose
subjectedtoheavycitytrafficduringhotweather
orwhentheengineisregularlyidledforpro-
longedperiods,thefactoryfillfluidshouldbe
changedat16,000miles.Subsequentchanges
shouldbeat12,000miles.
b.CheckingFluidLevel
ThedipstickandfillertubefortheHydra-Matic
transmissionarelocatedunderthehoodatthe

Thefluidlevelshould be checked at every en-
gine oil change. Add fluid, if necessary,until
properlevel is indicated on dipstick, Fig.2-6.
Properlevel is based on operatingtemperature.
Thefluidlevelshouldalways be checkedafter the
engine has beenrunning to makecertain the fluid
coupling is full. Runthe enginewith the selector
lever in"N" (Neutral) or"P" (Park)position at
800 RPMfor1-1/2 minutes.
Reduce the enginespeed to slowidle,remove
andwipedipstick, and checkfluidlevel.With the
enginestillrunning, add fluidthrough the dipstick
tube to bring the fluid tothe properlevel. At
normaloperatingtemperature,from low mark
(bottomdimple) to"F" requires 1 pint of fluid.
c.ChangingFluid
1. With caron hoist,removecoverplatefrom
bottom of flywheelhousing.
2. Removedrainplugs, Fig.2-7, from,trans-
mission oilpanand fromtoruscover.
NOTE: Itmaybe necessary to rotate fly-
wheel to gainaccess to toruscoverdrainplug.

3. Allow old fluid to draincompletely and then
reinstalldrainplugs.
4. Pour 7 quarts of Hydra-Maticfluidinto the
fillertube.
5. Run engine ata speed of800RPMforap-
proximately 1-1/2 minuteswithselectorlever in
"P" (Park).
6.Reduceenginespeed to slowidle andadd
1-1/2to2 quarts of fluid to bringlevel ondip-
stick to properlevel as indicated by operating
temperature, Fig.2-6.
7. Check for leaks at toruscover and drainplug
andreplacecoverplate on bottom of flywheel
housing and lower carto floor.
8.Turn off ignition and replacedipstick.
NOTE: The capacity ofthe Hydra-Matic
transmission is approximately 9 quarts fora
refill, butthe correctlevel is determined bythe
mark onthe dipstickratherthan bythe amount
added. Itis importantthat the properlevel is
maintained. Donot overfill, as foaming may
occurwhen the fluidheats up.Iftheoil level is
too low,the pressureregulatorwillbecome
noisy,resulting in possiblemalfunction ofthe
transmission.
d. Oil Strainer
The oil intakesystem ofthe1963 Hydra-Matic
transmissionincorporates anoil strainer inthe
transmission oil sump. Itis recommendedthat
thetransmission oil strainer be replacedafter
thefirst30,000milesonly. The procedure for

Whenrepackingthesebearings, usea #2 grade
highmeltingpointwheelbearinggreasefreefrom
anyfillers or abrasives.Refer to Section 4 Note
5, for repackingprocedure.
9. Battery
Thebatteryelectrolytelevelshouldordinarily
bechecked at everyengine oil change. In warm
weather, a checkshould be made at two-week
intervals. Ifthe level is found tobelow,add
colorless,odorlessdrinkingwater in each ofthe
sixcells to bring the level uptothe bottom ofthe
slot inthe well.
