Beforelightingthefirecheckwiththe
installerthattheworkandchecks
describedintheinstallationinstructions
havebeencarriedoutcorrectlyand
thatthechimneyhasbeenswept,is
sound,andfreefromanyobstructions.
WARNINGTheremustnotbean
extractorfanfittedinthesameroom
asthisapplianceasthiscancausethe
appliancetoemitsmokeandfumesinto
theroom.
Iftheapplianceisfittedinplaceofan
openfirethenthechimneyshouldbe
sweptonemonthafterinstallationto
clearanysootfallswhichmayhave
occurredduetothedifferencein
combustionbetweentheapplianceand
theopenfire.
Whenusingthefireinsituationswhere
childrenorinfirmpeoplearepresent
pleaseuseafireguardtoprevent
accidents.Thefireguardshouldbe
manufacturedinaccordancewithBS
6539.
Thisappliancehasbeendesignedto
conformwithBS.3378.Ithasobtained
theapprovalofHETASLtd.(formerly

fuels.
Theabovefuelsareallsuitableforuse
insmokecontrolareas.Innon-smoke
controlareasyourHousingAuthority
willbeabletoadviseyouifotherfuels
maybeburnt.Forinstructionson
burningotherfuelspleaseaskyour
supplierorHousingAuthorityforthe

Atfirstyoumayfindithelpfultotry
severalfuelstofindthemostsuitable.If
youareunabletoobtainthefuelyou
want,askyoursupplieroranapproved
fueldistributortosuggestan
alternative.
Usethespannertypetooltoopenand
closethedoors.Turntheknobonthe
righthanddooranti-clockwisetoopen
andclockwisetoclose.Whenclosing
thedoorsdonotpushontheenamel
withthetoolasthiscanchipthe
enamel,insteadpushthedoorsonthe
doorknobs.
Placesomepaperanddrykindling
woodorfirelightersonthegrateand
coverwithasmallamountoffuel.Turn
thethermostatcontrolknobtothe
maximumsettingandlightthepaperor
firelighters.Closethedoorsandallow
thefiretoburnuntilthefueliswell
ignitedthenloadwithmorefueland
adjustthethermostattotherequired
level.
Oninitiallighting,thefiremaysmoke
andgiveoffanodourasthesilicon
paintwithwhichthefireboxispainted
reactstotheheat.Thisisnormaland
willceaseafterashorttime.Inthe
meantimetheroomshouldbekept
wellventilated.
Beforerelightingthefire,riddle,
removeanyclinkerfromthefirebed
andemptytheashpan.
Therateofburningandhencethe
outputiscontrolledbythecontrol
knobonthelefthandsideofthe
appliance,showninFig.1.Thisislinked
toathermostatwhichcontrolsthe
boilertemperature.Thenumberatthe
topoftheknobisthenumberatwhich
itisset.Someexperimentationmaybe
necessarytoobtainthedesiredheat
output.
Thereisalsoamanualsecondaryair
controlwhichislocatedabovethedoor
openingasshowninFig.2.Toadjust
thesetting,openthedoorsandusethe
dooropeningtooltomovetheflapto
thedesiredposition.Thiscontrol
shouldbeintheclosedpositionwhen
burninganyoftherecommended
smokelessfuelsexceptforanthracite
andhomefirewhichshouldbeburnt
withthesecondaryairinletopen.
Thefiremayberunwiththedoors

reactivefuels,likeHomefire,willburn
betterwhenthedoorsareopenthan
fuelslikePhurnacite,Sunbriteand
Ancit.
Forsafetyreasons,ifthefireistobe
leftunattendedwiththedoorsopen
thenuseasparkguardwhichcomplies
withBS3248.
Theheatingsystemcontrolsmay
consistoftimeswitches,room
thermostats,outdoortemperature
thermostatsandthermostaticradiator
valvesinvirtuallyanycombination.
Thesewillworkinconjunctionwiththe
thermostatcontrolontheappliance.
Thethermostatontheappliancewill
simplycontrolthetemperatureofthe
watercomingfromtheboilerand
hencethetemperatureoftheradiators
anddomestichotwater.Theautomatic
controls(otherthanthermostatic
radiatorvalves)willswitchthepump
(andhencetheradiators)onandoff.
Yourinstallerwillbeabletoexplainthe
controlsfittedtoyoursystemandhow
tooperatethem.
Theashpanshouldbeemptied
regularlybeforeitbecomestoofull.
Themostconvenienttimetoremove
theashisjustbeforeriddlingthefire
sincetheashwillthenbeatitscoolest.
Usetheashpan/riddlingtoolprovided
toremovetheashpan,thefoldup
carryinghandlemaybeheldwitha
heatproofgloveand/orthedoor
openingtoolasshowninFig.2a
Neverallowtheashtoaccumulatein
theashpansothatitcomesincontact
withtheundersideofthegrateasthis
willseriouslydamagethegratebars.
Ensurethattheairinletdamperisnot
preventedfromclosingbyspilledfuel
orash.
Careshouldbetakentoensurethat
ashiscoolbeforeemptyingitinto
plasticlinersorbins.
Tomakeashremovaleasierthereisa
special
available.Thismaybepurchasedfrom
yoursupplieror,incaseof difficulty,
fromourselves.
Riddlingtwiceadayisusuallysufficient.
Thefireshouldberiddledwithall
doorsshut.Placethetoolontheknob
androtatebetweenthehorizontaland
the45°positionseveraltimesasshown
inFig.3.
Caution:whenriddlingthegrateusing
solidfueldonotgobeyondthe45°
positionasthiscancausethegrateto
jam.
Ifjammingdoesoccurthenthefire
shouldbeallowedtoburnfor
approximatelyhalfanhourbefore
riddlingthegrateagainasdescribed
above.
Toomuchriddlingcanresultin
emptyingunburntfuelintotheashpan
andshouldthereforebeavoided.
Clinkershouldregularlyberemoved
fromthefirebed.
Afterriddling,thegrateshouldbeput
backintothesolidfuelposition(the
toolshouldbehorizontal).
Keepthefireboxwellfilled(thefuel
maybeslopedupfromthefront
firebars),butdonotallowfueltospill
overthetopofthefrontfirebars.Take
carethatfueldoesnotprojectoverthe
frontfirebarsordamagetotheglass
maybecausedwhenthedoorsare
closed.
Emptytheashpan,ifnecessary,and
thenriddlethefire.Ifthefireisvery
lowthenitmaybenecessarytoadda
littlefuelandturnthethermostat
controluptomaximumforabrief

Forovernightburningthefiredoors
mustbeclosed.
Torevivethefire,emptytheashpanif
necessary,riddle,andturnthe
thermostatcontrolknobtomaximum.
Whenthefireisburningwellloadon
morefuelasnecessaryandturnthe
controlknobtothedesiredsetting.
Itisimportantthatthethroatplateand
alltheappliancefluewaysarekept
clean.Whenburningsmokelessfuels
theyshouldbecleanedatleastmonthly
andmorefrequentlyifitisfound
necessary
Thethroatplateandfluewaysmaybe
cleanedwithalowfirestillburning.
Lowerthethroatplateusingthethroat
platetool.Todothisengagetheendof
thetoolinthethroatplateasshownin
Fig.4.,pulltheplateforwardandthen
lowerit.Usethescrapertooltopush
anysootydepositsupthe plateuntil
theyfalloffthebackandintothefire.
Whilethethroatplateisinthelowered
positionalsoscrapeanysootdeposits
fromthesidesandtopofthefirebox.
Ensurethatsootdepositsarenot
allowedtobuilduponthesideboiler
facesbecauseifthethroatplate
becomestightbetweenthefacesthis
cancauseittofailprematurely.
Returnthethroatplatetoitscorrect
position-raisethefrontoftheplate,
pushitbackandthenloweritontothe
retaininglugs.Theuppersetoflugsare
forusewhenburningsmokelessfuels,
(seeFig.4.).
Moresootwillbedepositedonthe
throatplateandinthefluewaysifthe
applianceisrunatlowlevelsforlong
periods.Ifthisisthecasethenmore
frequentcleaningwillbenecessary.
Theapplianceisfinishedinvitreous
enamel.Tocleanthesurfacessimply
wipeoverwithadrycloth.Abrasive
padsandscouringcleanersmustnotbe
usedasthesewilldamagethefinish.
Careshouldbetakennottoknockthe
enamelwithhardobjectsasitwillchip.
Theglassinthedoorsisaspecial
ceramicglasswhichisabletowithstand
hightemperatures.Beforecleaningthe
glassopenthedoorsandallowthemto
cool.Cleantheglassusingadampcloth
andthenwipingoverwithadrycloth.
Anystubborndepositsontheglassmay
beremovedwithaproprietarystove
glasscleanerorceramichobcleaner.
Somedepositsontheglassmaybe
burntoffsimplybyrunningthefireata
fastrateforafewminutes.Donotuse
abrasivecleanersorpadsasthesecan
scratchthesurfacewhichwillweaken
theglassandcauseprematurefailure.
Aerosolspraycleanersshouldnotbe
usedneartheappliancewhilstitis
underfire.
Ifthefireisgoingtobeoutofusefora
longperiod,(forinstanceinthe
summer,)thentoprevent
condensation,andhencecorrosion,the
thermostatshouldbeleftatthe
maximumsettingandthemaindoors
leftajar.Itisalsoadvisabletosweep
thechimneyandcleanoutthefire.
Sprayingtheinsideofthedoorsand
fireboxwithalightoil,suchasWD40,
willalsohelptokeepallinternalparts
workingwell.
Afterlongperiodswherethefirehas
beenoutofuse,thechimneyand
appliancefluewaysshouldbecleaned
beforelighting.
Forthefiretooperatecorrectlyitis
importantthatthedoorsealsarein
goodcondition.Checkthattheydonot
becomewornorfrayedandreplace
themwhennecessary.
Itisrecommendedthatthefireis
serviced onceayeartokeepitinfirst
classworkingorder.Aftercleaningout
thefireboxthoroughly,checkthatall
internalpartsareingoodworking
order,replacinganypartsthatare
beginningtoshowsignsofwear.Check
thatthedoorssealsareingood
conditionandthatthedoorsseal
correctly.Checktheoperationofthe
thermostat,bothwhencoldandhot.A
servicingguide,TIS48.isavailableon
request.
Thechimneyshouldbesweptatleast
twiceayear.Inmostinstallationsitwill
bepossibletosweepthechimney
throughtheappliance.
Firstremovethefrontfirebarsandthe
throatplate.Thensweepthechimney
ensuringthatsootisremovedfromall
horizontalsurfacesaftersweeping.
Insituationswhereitisnotpossibleto
sweepthroughtheappliancethe
installerwillhaveprovidedalternative
means,suchasasootdoor.After
sweepingthechimneytheappliance
flueoutletandthefluepipeconnecting
theappliancetothechimneymustbe
cleanedwithafluebrush.
Afterclearinganysootfromwithinthe
fire,replacethethroatplateandthe
frontfirebars.
Differenttypesofsweep?sbrushesare
availabletosuitdifferentflueways.For
standardbrickchimneysawirecentre
sweep?sbrushfittedwithaguidewheel
isrecommended.Forprefabricated

thedeepeningbarandfrontfirebar.Fit
thebrickintothefirewiththethick
partofthebrickatthebottomandthe
slopingfaceatthefrontasshownon
thepartslist.Pushthebrickhardup
againsttherearfaceoftheboiler.The
brickshouldrestonthesidefireplates
andshouldbeclearofthegratebars.
Replacethefrontfirebarand
deepeningbar.
Asthebrickisnotcementedinto
position,fittingandremovingitshould
onlytakeafewminutes.
Checkthat:
a)theairinletisnotobstructedinany
way,
b)chimneysandfluewaysareclear,
c)asuitablefuelisbeingused,
d)thereisanadequateairsupplyinto
theroom,
e)anextractorfanisnotfittedinthe
sameroomasthefire.
Checkthat:
a)thedoorsaretightlyclosed,
b)thethermostatknobisturneddown
totheminimumsetting,
c)theairinletdamperisclosed(atthe
bottomleftoftheappliance,seeFig.
1.),andthatitisnotpreventedfrom
closingcompletelybyapieceofash,
d)asuitablefuelisbeingused,
e)thedoorsealsareingoodcondition.
Ifthefireisover-fireditwillcause
prematurefailureoftheinternalfire
parts.Overfiringisoccurringwhenany
internalpartsofthefirebegintoglow
red.Topreventover-firingensurethat:
a)thedoorsealsarekeptingood
condition,andthatthedoorsare
sealingcorrectly,
b)thethermostatonthefireis
workingcorrectly,
c)asuitablefuelisbeingused,
d)thefireisnotfittedontoaheating
systemwhichistoolarge.
Themostcommoncauseoffume
emissionisfluewayorchimney
blockage.Foryourownsafetythese
mustbekeptclean.
Donotlightthefireifthereisany
possibilitythatanypartsofthesystem
maybefrozen.
Ifthechimneyisthoroughlyand
regularlyswept,chimneyfiresshould
notoccur.However,ifachimneyfire
doesoccurthenclosethesecondaryair
inlet(seeFig.2.),turnthecontrolknob
totheminimumsetting(seeFig.1),
andtightlyclosethedoorsofthe
appliance.Thisshouldcausethe
chimneyfiretogooutinwhichcase
thecontrolshouldbekeptatthe
minimumsettinguntilthefireinthe
appliancehasgoneout.Thechimney
andfluewaysshouldthenbecleaned.If
thechimneyfiredoesnotgooutwhen
theaboveactionistakenthenthefire
brigadeshouldbecalledimmediately.
Afterachimneyfirethechimney
shouldbecarefullyexaminedforany
damage.Expertadviceshouldbe
soughtifnecessary.
Checkthat:
a)thefireisburningproperly-ifnot
thencarryoutthechecksunder"Fire
WillNotBurn".
b)thethroatplateisfittedcorrectly
(seeFig.4.)andthatitisnotdistorted.

mayneedbalancing,thepumpmaybe
pumpingthewatertooquicklyaround
thesystem,ortheradiatorsmayneed
bleeding.Pleaseaskyourinstallerto
checkthesepoints.

asbestosinthecourseofinstallation
thenpleaseuseappropriateprotective
equipment.
Theremustnotbeanextractorfan
fittedinthesameroomasthe

Theremustbeanadequateairsupply
intotheroominwhichtheappliance is

thatifthewaterheatingloadisless
thantheratedoutputthentheroom

conditionthenexpertadviceshouldbe

thesupplierorthelocalbuilding
inspector.
Beforefittingtheapplianceintoan
existingfireplaceremovethefireback
andanyloosein-fillmaterial.
Thehearth,surroundandopeningfor
theappliancemustconformwithFigs.
6and7.Theflatareaaroundthe
openingmustbeaminimumof750mm
wideand660mmhigh.Ensurethatthe
hearthandthebaseintheopeningare
flat,level,andatrightanglestothe
surround.
Maketwoholesinthechimneybreast,
oneinthefronttogiveaccessfor
infillingandfixingthefluepipe,and
oneinthesidetogiveaccessforthe
pipework.
Thecentralheatingsystemmust
complywithBS:5449part1.
Ifthesystemistobeacombined
heatinganddomestichotwatersystem
thenadoublefeedindirecthotwater
storagecylindertoBS:1566part1
shouldbeused.Inordertopreventthe
buildupofscaleandcorrosiona
suitableinhibitorshouldbeused.The
systemmustbecorrectlyventedas
showninFigs.8and9.Theheight
differentialbetweentheheadertank
andtheappliancemustnotexceed15.2
metres(50feet).
Ifallfourboilertappingsareusedthen,
ifpossible,diagonalpairsshouldbe
connectedfordomestichotwaterand
centralheating.Whereacommon
returnisusedaninjectorteemustbe
incorporatedintothesystemasshown
inFig.10.Thiswillensurethatagood
domestichotwatersupplyis
maintainedwhenthecentralheating
pumpisoperating.Theseareavailable
fromourselvesifyouareunableto
obtainonelocally.
Thesystemmustincorporateagravity
circuitwhichwillnormallyheatthe
domestichotwaterandanunvalved
radiatorwithanoutputofatleast1
kW.Whentheapplianceisnot
connectedtoadomestichotwater
systemtheunvalvedradiator(s)onthe
gravitycircuitmusthaveanoutputofat
least1.25kW.Thisistoprevent
boilingincaseofpumpfailure.All
pipeworkintheprimarycircuitmustbe
28mmdiameterandthegravityflow
pipemustrisecontinuouslyfromthe
boilertotheopenvent.Twotypical
systemsareshownin Figures8.and9.
Iftheapplianceisusedtoheatasmall
centralheatingsystemthentheheat
outputtotheroomfromthefirewill
bereduced.Fig.5.showstheratioof
spaceheatingtowaterheatingwhich
canbeexpected.
Fittingaradiatorinthesameroomas
thefireisrecommendedasitwillallow
greaterflexibilityinthewaythatthe
systemisoperatedaswellasensuring
thatthereissufficientheat.
Thecirculatingpumpmaybecontrolled
bymeansoftimeswitches,room
thermostatsoroutdoorthermostats.
Radiatorsmaybeeithermanuallyor
thermostaticallycontrolled.These
controlswillallworkinconjunction
withthethermostatontheappliance
andtheminimumreturnthermostat.
Werecommendfittingapipe
thermostatontothegravityreturnpipe
andwiringitintothemainssupplyto
thepumpsothatifthegravityreturn
temperaturedropsbelow45°Cthen
thepumpwillcutout.Thiswillhelpto
preventcondensationformingonthe
boilerfacesandwilltherebyincrease
thelifeoftheboiler.Itwillalsoensure
thatpriorityisgiventothedomestic
hotwater.Thesethermostatsare
availablefromourselvesifyouare
unabletoobtainthemlocally.
Insomecasesitmaybenecessaryto
placetheconnectingfluepipeinthe
chimneybeforefittingthefireintothe
fireplace.
Applyfirecementtotherearfaceof
thesealingflangeontheappliance.Fit
theapplianceintotheopeningensuring
thatitiscentralandthatagoodsealis
madebetweenthesealingflangeand
thefaceofthesurround.
Removeanyexcessfirecementfrom
aroundthesealingflange.
Thefireshouldbescrewedtothe
hearththroughtheholesatthebaseof
thesealingflange.
Connecttheheatingsystemtothe
boilerensuringthattheprimaryflow
piperisesfromtheappliance.Fillthe
systemwithwaterandcheckforleaks.

volumesofvermiculitegranulestoone
volumeofPortlandcementthoroughly
mixedtogether.Enoughwatershould
beaddedsothatnomorethanoneor
twodropsofwaterarereleasedwhen
ahandfulofthemixtureissqueezed.

commissioningpleaseleavethe
operatinginstructionswiththe
customerandadviseontheuseofthe
applianceandanycontrols onthe
system.
