Please ensure that these instructions are read and understood before commencing installation. Failure to comply with
the instructions listed below and details printed in this manual can cause product/property damage, severe personal
injury, and/or loss of life. Ensure all requirements below are understood and fulfilled (including detailed information
found in manual subsections).
WARNING
Installers must follow local regulations with respect to
installation of carbon monoxide detectors. Follow the
Viessmann maintenance schedule of the boiler contained
in this manual.
Product documentation
Read all applicable documentation before commencing
installation. Store documentation near boiler in a
readily accessible location for reference in the future
by service personnel.
For a listing of applicable literature,
please see section entitled “Important
Regulatory and Safety Requirements”.
Warranty
Information contained in this and
related product documentation must
be read and followed. Failure to do
so renders the warranty null and void.
Licensed professional heating contractor
The installation, adjustment, service and maintenance
of this equipment must be performed by a licensed
professional heating contractor.
Please see section entitled
“Important Regulatory and Installation
Requirements”.
Contaminated air
Air contaminated by chemicals can cause by-products
in the combustion process, which are poisonous to
inhabitants and destructive to
Viessmann equipment.
For a listing of chemicals which
cannot be stored in or near the
boiler room, please see subsection
entitled “Mechanical room” in the
“Installation Instructions”.
Advice to owner
Once the installation work is complete, the heating
contractor must familiarize the system operator/
ultimate owner with all equipment, as well as safety
precautions/requirements, shutdown procedure, and
the need for professional service annually before the
heating season begins.
Carbon monoxide
Improper installation, adjustment, service and/or
maintenance can cause flue products to flow into
living space. Flue products contain poisonous carbon
monoxide gas.
For information pertaining to the
proper installation, adjustment, service
and maintenance of this equipment to
avoid formation of carbon monoxide,
please see subsection entitled
“Mechanical room” and “Venting
requirements” in the “Installation Instructions”.
Fresh air
This equipment requires fresh air for
safe operation and must be installed
ensuring provisions for adequate
combustion and ventilation air exist.
For information pertaining to the
fresh air requirements of this product,
please see subsection entitled
“Mechanical room” in the “Installation
Instructions”.
Equipment venting
Never operate boiler without an installed venting
system. An improper venting system can cause
carbon monoxide poisoning.
For information pertaining to
venting and chimney requirements,
please see section entitled “Venting
Connection”. All products of
combustion must be safely vented
to the outdoors.

For your Safety
Operation
Before operating the boiler, make sure you fully
understand its method of operation. Your heating
contractor should always perform the initial start-up
and explain the system. Any warranty is null and void
if these instructions are not followed.
Working on the equipment
All personnel working on the equipment or the heating
system must have the proper qualifications and hold all
necessary licenses.
Ensure main power to equipment, heating system, and
all external controls has been deactivated. Close main
gas supply valve. Take precautions in all instances to
avoid accidental activation of power during service work.
Maintenance and cleaning
Regular inspection and service by a qualified heating
contractor is important to the performance of the
Viessmann Vitodens 200 Series. Neglected maintenance
impacts on warranty; regular inspection ensures clean,
environmentally friendly and efficient operation. We
recommend a maintenance contract with
a qualified heating contractor.
Flue gas smell
- Deactivate heating equipment.
- Open windows and doors.
- Inform your heating contractor.
Dangerous conditions
- Deactivate main power immediately.
- Close gas supply valve.

Safety
Carbon monoxide
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission strongly
recommends the installation of carbon monoxide
detectors in buildings in which gas-burning equipment
is installed. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless,
odorless gas, which may be produced during incomplete
combustion of fuel and/or when the flame does not
receive an adequate supply of combustion air.
Carbon monoxide can cause severe personal injury or
loss of life.
Therefore, carbon monoxide detectors that are in
compliance with a nationally recognized standard (e.g.
ANSI/UL 2034, CSA 6.19 latest edition) should be
installed and maintained in buildings that contain gas-
burning equipment.
Note: Viessmann does not test any detectors and makes
no representation regarding any brand or type of
detector.
For safe operation
We recommend that you frequently:
- Check for debris which could obstruct the flow of
flue gases. The vent or chimney must not be blocked.
A blocked or partially blocked vent or chimney can
cause flue gases to leak into the structure.
Flue gases leaking into the house can cause injury
or loss of life. Blocked or partially blocked chimneys
must have the blockage removed by a qualified
heating contractor.
- Check pressure gage for correct system (water)
pressure. Check for water on the floor from the
discharge pipe of the pressure relief valve or any
other pipe, pipe joint, valve or air vent.
- Check for moisture, water, or appearance of rust
on the flue gas pipes, their joints as well as vent
dampers, or side wall vent terminals (if so equipped).
- Ensure that nothing is obstructing the flow of
combustion and ventilation air and no chemicals,
garbage, gasoline, combustible materials, flammable
vapors and liquids are stored (not even temporarily)
in the vicinity of the boiler.
- Do not allow unsupervised children near the boiler.
Service/inspection of the boiler and the system is
recommended once a year. Maintenance, service and
cleaning are specified in the Installation Instructions.
Before the heating season begins, it is recommended that
the boiler and burner be serviced by a qualified heating
contractor. Service contracts may be established through
gas suppliers or other licensed contractors in your area.
WARNING
As there are no user-serviceable parts on the boiler,
burner or control, the end-user must not perform
service activities or adjustments of any kind on system
components. Failure to heed this warning can cause
property damage, severe personal injury, or loss of life.
CAUTION
Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to
shut off, do not disconnect the electrical supply to the
pump. Instead, shut off the gas supply at a location
external to the appliance.
WARNING
The operator/ultimate owner is required to have the
heating boiler, burners, and controls checked, as a
minimum once per year, by the original installer or
by a competent heating contractor familiar with the
equipment. Defects must be corrected immediately.
CAUTION
Do not use this boiler if any part has been under water.
Immediately call a qualified heating contractor to
inspect the boiler and to replace any part of the control
system and any gas control which has been under
water.
WARNING
Improper installation, adjustment, service, or
maintenance can cause flue products to flow into
living space. Flue products contain poisonous carbon
monoxide gas which can cause nausea or asphyxiation
resulting in severe personal injury or loss of life.

Safety
Frozen water pipe hazard
Your heating boiler is designed to provide a warm and
comfortable living environment. It is not designed to
ensure against freezing of water pipes.
The boiler is equipped with several safety devices that
are designed to shut down the boiler and to prevent it
from restarting in the event of various unsafe conditions.
If your boiler remains off for an extended period of time
during cold weather, water pipes may freeze and burst,
resulting in extensive water damage and conditions in
which mold could grow. Certain molds are known to
cause respiratory problems, as well as to pose other
serious health risks. In case of water damage, immediate
measures should be taken to dry out affected areas as
quickly as possible to prevent mold from developing.
If your home will be unattended for an extended period
of time during cold weather, you should...
Shut off the water supply to the building, drain the
water pipes and add an antifreeze for potable water
to drain traps and toilet tanks. Open faucets where
appropriate.
Or..
Have someone check the building frequently during
cold weather and call a qualified service agency if
required.
Or...
Install a reliable remote temperature sensor that will
notify somebody of freezing conditions within the
home.
WARNING
Fire causes a risk of burns and explosion!
Shut down the boiler
Close fuel shut-off valves
Use a tested fire extinguisher, class ABC.
Replacement components, spare and wear parts
Components which are not tested with the heating
system may damage the heating system or affect its
functions. Installation or replacement may only be
performed by a qualified heating contractor.
IMPORTANT
Installation area conditions
Ensure ambient temperatures are higher than 32°F (0°C)
and lower than 104°F (40°C).
Prevent the air from becoming contaminated by
halogenated hydrocarbons (e.g. as contained in
paint solvents or cleaning fluids) and excessive dust
(e.g. through grinding or polishing work).
Combustion air for the heating process, and
ventilation of the boiler room must be free of
corrosive contaminants. To that end, any boiler
must be installed in an area that has no chemical
exposure.
The list below indicates the main, currently known
sources.
Avoid continuously high levels of humidity
(e.g. through frequent drying of laundry).
Never close existing ventilation openings.
Sources of combustion and ventilation air contaminants

Chlorine-type bleaches, detergents and cleaning

Chlorinated waxes and cleaners
Cements and glues
Refrigerant leaks
Calcium chloride used for thawing
Sodium chloride used for water softening salt
Permanent wave solutions
Adhesives used to fasten building products and
other similar items
Antistatic fabric softeners used in clothes dryers
WARNING
Incorrect ambient conditions can lead to damage to
the heating system and put safe operation at risk.

Getting Started
The timer of the control unit switches between “normal
room temperature” and “reduced room temperature” at
the required times.
1. Normal room temperature for the times you spend
at home and require a comfortably warm room
temperature [e.g. 68ºF (20ºC)].
Note: Times and duration of the two room
temperatures can be set on the programming
unit of your control.
The temperature settings for both the “normal
room temperature” and “reduced room
temperature” can be set according to your
personal preference.
2. Reduced room temperature for the times you are
away from home. To save energy, a lower
temperature is typically selected [e.g. 57ºF (14ºC)].
The timer of the control unit switches domestic hot water
production on and off at the required times.
1. Domestic hot water heating can be set to take
place during the times you spend at home and
require hot water for your daily DHW requirements
(e.g. for showering).
Note: Times and duration of the domestic hot
water production period can be set on the
programming unit of your control. You may
select a DHW temperature setting based on
your personal preference of up to 140ºF (60ºC).
2. Domestic hot water heating can be set not to take
place for the times you spend sleeping, for example.
Note: The domestic hot water recirculation pump
(if installed) ensures that domestic hot water is
readily available when domestic hot water is
drawn.

General Information
Overview of Controls and Indicators
Please ask your heating contractor to check off the
appropriate box .
Vitodens 200 without domestic hot water tank
The control unit activates and deactivates space
heating and supplies rooms with heat.
Vitodens 200 with separate domestic hot water tank
Domestic hot water heating has priority over space
heating. The control unit switches automatically to
space heating when the preset domestic hot water
temperature is reached.
Vitodens 200 with integrated DHW plate heat
exchanger for instantaneous DHW heating
Domestic hot water heating has priority over space
heating. The control unit switches automatically to
space heating when the heat exchanger temperature
is satisfied with comfort switch on) or when the
preset domestic hot water temperature is reached
(with comfort switch off).

Main Control Options
Operation
All settings can be adjusted directly on the boiler control
or on the remote control (when the programming unit is
used as remote control).
The programming unit can be removed from the control
unit and mounted on a wall-mount base (available as
accessory) anywhere in your main living area and used
as a remote control. In instances where the programming
unit is used as remote control, a temperature indicator
(available as accessory) must be installed in place of
the programming unit in the control base on the boiler.
The control unit is located behind the hinged cover in the
front of the boiler. Open hinged cover of the control by
exerting slight pressure with your fingertip on top of
the cover. Ensure hinged cover is closed after every use
to guarantee splash protection.
Your System is Preset at the Factory
The control unit comes factory preset to a standard
operating mode.
This means your heating system is ready for operation.
All factory default settings can be changed to reflect your
personal preferences.
Date and time
The date and time are factory preset and are updated
through the built-in long-life battery. Should time and/or
date be incorrect please see section entitled “Changing
Time and Date” on page 18 in this manual.
Heating program
The heating program is set to ”Space heating and
domestic hot water”, i.e. space heating and domestic
hot water production take place in accordance with
preset switching times.
Note: Press button ”D” to reset the switching times to
their factory default settings. Please note that this
will reset all altered values to their original factory
default setting.
Switching times
The switch-on time is set to 6:00 hrs, the switch-off time
to 22:00 hrs. Between 6:00 hrs and 22:00 hrs, space
heating takes place at normal room temperature with
domestic hot water production (if installed) when
required.
Between 22:00 hrs and 6:00 hrs, space heating takes
place at reduced room temperature.

Selecting a Heating Program (winter, summer)
Operation
Select one of the heating programs according to your
personal requirements.
IMPORTANT
The “T” setting is for maintenance and service purposes
only and is solely for use by the heating contractor.
Central heating and domestic hot water (e.g. for the
winter and transitionary periods)
• Central heating with alternating normal and reduced
room temperature according to the preset switching
times
• Domestic hot water supply (if DHW cylinder installed)
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder.
Domestic hot water only (e.g. for the summer)
• No central heating
• Domestic hot water supply (if DHW cylinder installed)
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder.
Standby operation (e.g. for the summer holiday period)
• No central heating
• No domestic hot water supply
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder.
Note: The circulation pumps are switched on for a short
time every 24 hours to prevent them from seizing up.
Continuous normal room temperature (e.g. on bank
holidays or for parties)
• Central heating continuously with normal room
temperature
• Domestic hot water supply (if DHW cylinder installed)
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder.
Continuous reduced room temperature (e.g. to protect
house plants during your winter holiday)
• Central heating continuously with reduced room
temperature
• No domestic hot water supply
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder.

Changing the Room Temperature
In the “Central heating and domestic hot water” heating
program, central heating takes place with alternating
“normal room temperature” and “reduced room
temperature” according to the preset switching times.
You can set the required room temperature as follows.
Normal room temperature
(factory setting: from 6:00 hrs in the morning)
“N” stands for normal setting and corresponds to a room
temperature of approx. 20°C / 68°F with a correctly
adjusted heating curve.
The “normal room temperature” can be set between
13 and 28°C / 55°F and 82°F.
Example: For the times you spend at home and require
a comfortably warm room temperature.
Reduced room temperature
(factory setting from 22:00 hrs in the evening)
“N” stands for normal setting and corresponds to a room
temperature of approx. 14°C / 57°F with a correctly
adjusted heating curve.
The “reduced room temperature” can be set between
6 and 20°C / 43°F and 68°F.
“e” stands for frost protection of the boiler and the
DHW cylinder.
Example: For the times you spend sleeping or away from
home.
Changing the room temperature
Change the temperature to the required value with the
appropriate selector knob.
1 graduation corresponds to a temperature change of
approx. 1°C / 1.8°F.

Operation
Initial Start-up and Re-starting the Heating System
Initial start-up and adjustment of the control unit to local
conditions and the structural characteristics of your
building must be performed by your heating contractor.
We recommend that you contact your heating contractor
before re-starting the heating system if it has been shut
down for a long period of time.
To start up the system
1. Check heating system pressure on the pressure
gauge 1.
Minimum system pressure 12 psig.
If the needle of the pressure gauge is below 12 psig,
the system pressure is too low, in which case you
must contact your heating contractor.
2. Open flue operation only:
Check that the ventilation facilities in the boiler room
are open and are not obstructed.
3. Open the gas shutoff valve 2(field supplied).
4. Switch on line voltage (e.g. at separate fuse/circuit
breaker).
5. Switch on the heating system on/off switch 3.
Your heating system is now ready for operation.
Shutting Down the Heating System
In case you are not intending to use your heating system
for a period of time, e.g. during your summer holidays,
switch your heating system to standby operation (see
section entitled ”Selecting a heating program”, page 10).
If you do not want to use your heating system for a
longer period of time (several months), you should shut it
down. We advise you to contact your heating contractor
before shutting down the heating system for longer
periods of time.
Your heating contractor will then take any required action/
precautions, e.g. providing freeze-up protection of the
system or safeguarding the heat exchanger surfaces.
To shut down the heating system
1. Switch off the heating system on/off switch.
2. Close gas shutoff valve and secure against
unintentional opening.
3. Switch off line voltage (e.g. at separate fuse/
circuit breaker). The power supply to the system is
now switched off. There is no freeze-up protection.
All settings of the control unit still remain intact.

Switching Times
Operation
The activation periods are called up and set on the
appropriate timer channel. Each timer channel is effective
for a particular part of your heating system as defined in
the factory: The time between switching on the“normal
room temperature” and changing over to
“reduced room temperature” is called an
activation period.
When setting the activation periods, please take into
account the reaction time of your heating system.
Therefore choose correspondingly earlier switch-on and
switch-off times.
By setting the corresponding activation periods, the
central heating can be switched up to 4 times per day to
and fro between the “normal room temperature” and the
“reduced room temperature”.
The factory setting gives you the “normal room
temperature” in the activation period from 6:00 to
22:00 hrs on every day of the week.
Timer channel “r” - Central heating (for heating circuit
without mixing valve)
Timer channel “M” - Central heating (for heating circuit
with mixing valve)
The domestic hot water supply can be switched on and
off up to 4 times per day by setting the corresponding
activation periods.
The timer channel “w” is effective for the domestic hot
water supply (only if a domestic hot water cylinder is
installed).
The factory setting gives you domestic hot water in the
activation period from 6:00 to 22:00 hrs on every day
of the week.
The activation periods for the DHW
circulation pump should be selected for those periods
when you are at home and require hot water.
The domestic hot water circulation pump can be switched
on and off up to 4 times per day by setting the
corresponding activation periods.
The timer channel “p” is effective for the DHW
circulation pump (if installed).
In the factory setting, the DHW cylinder is operated in the
activation period from 6:00 to 22:00 hrs on every day
of the week.

Operation
To set the required day of the week
1. Press the “1-7” button and turn the “G” selector
knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until the arrow
“|” points to the day of the week (1 = Monday,
2 = Tuesday etc. ) for which you wish to scan the
switch-on and switch-off times.
2. Release the “1-7” button
To scan the first activation period
1. Press the red “0” button under the symbol “r”
The switch-on time appears.
2. Press the blue “\” button under the symbol “r”
The switch-off time appears
Note: When scanning the switch on and switch off
times, note which activation period you are in.
The number of horizontal bars between the
right and left arrow indicates the corresponding
activation period (see “To scan other activation
periods”).
To scan other activation periods
1. Press the red “0” button and the blue “\” button
under the symbol “r” simultaneously.
The figure “ “, “:”, “3” or “-” appears for five seconds.
2. With in five seconds, turn the “G” selector knob
clockwise or counter-clockwise until the required
activation period appears.
3. To scan the switch-on and switch-off times, follow
the same procedure as for scanning the first
activation period.
The figures stand for the activation periods.
Note: Approx. three minutes after you have finished
scanning, the arrow “|” automatically jumps
to the current day of the week.
For the heating circuit with mixing valve
Scan the activation periods accordingly on timer
channel “M”.
For the domestic hot water supply
Scan the activation periods accordingly on timer
channel “w”.
For the DHW circulation pump
Scan the activation periods accordingly on timer
channel “p”.

Changing the Activation Periods
You can set the activation periods the same for every day
of the week or individually for each day.
Setting the same activation periods for every day of the
week
Press the “
D ” button - the arrows “|” are displayed for
every day of the week I - 7
If you have already set individual activation periods,
they are erased when the “ D ”button is pressed.
The activation periods are reset to the factory settings
(normal room temperature/domestic hot water supply
from 6:00 to 22:00 hrs).
To change the switch-on time for the first activation period
1. Press the red “0” button under the symbol “r” and
turn the “G” selector knob clockwise or counter-
clockwise until the required switch-on time appears.
2. Release the red “0” button. The displayed switch-on
time is stored.
To change the switch-off time for the first activation period
1. Press the blue “\” button under the symbol “r”
and turn the “G” selector knob clockwise or
counter-clockwise until the required switch-off time
appears.
2. Release the blue “\” button. The displayed switch-
off time is stored.
To select other activation periods (two to four)
1. Press the red “0” button and the blue “\” button
under the symbol “r” simultaneously.

Setting individual activation periods for individual days of
the week
To set the required day of the week
1. Press the “1-7” button and turn the “G” selector
knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until the arrow
“|.” points to the day of the week (1 = Monday,
2 = Tuesday etc ) for which you wish to set the
switch-on and switch-off times.
2. Release the “1-7” button
To change the switch-on time for the first activation period
1. Press the red “0” button under the symbol “r” and
turn the “G” selector knob clockwise or counter-
clockwise until the required switch-on time appears.
2. Release the red “0” button. The displayed switch-on
time is stored.
To change the switch-off time for the first activation period
1. Press the blue “\” button under the symbol “r”
and turn the “G” selector knob clockwise or
counter-clockwise until the required switch-off time
appears.
2. Release the blue “\” button. The displayed switch-
off time is stored.
To select other activation periods (two to four)
1. Press the red “0” button and the blue “\” button
under the symbol “r” simultaneously.

Erasing the Activation Periods
Setting individual activation periods for individual days of
the week
1. Press the “1-7” button and turn the “G” selector
knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until the arrow
“|” points to the day of the week (1 = Monday,
2 = Tuesday etc ) for which you wish to erase the
switch-on and switch-off times.
2. Release the “1-7” button
3. Press the red “0” button and the blue “\” button of
the corresponding timer channel (“r”, “M”, “w”
or “p”) simultaneously.
The figure “1“, “2”, “3” or “4” appears for five
seconds.
4. With in five seconds, turn the “G” selector knob
clockwise or counter- clockwise until the required
activation period appears
5. Press the red “0” button of the corresponding timer
channel (“r”, “M”, “w” or “p”) and turn
the “G” selector knob counter-clock-wise until
“--:--” appears.
6. Release the red “0” button The switch-on time is
erased.
7. Press the blue “\” button of the corresponding timer
channel (“r”, “M”, “w” or “p”) and turn
the “G” selector knob counter-clock-wise until
“--:--” appears.
8. Release the blue “\” button The switch-on time is
erased.
or
press the “ D ” button.
Note: Approx. three minutes after you have finished
erasing the arrow “|” automatically jumps to
the current day of the week.
All switching times are reset to the factory settings (from
6.00 to 22.00 hrs.

Changing the Domestic Hot Water Temperature Only with boiler with separate DHW cylinder
If you are going on holiday and want to set your heating
system to the minimum energy consumption, choose one
of the following heating programs.
Standby operation
• No central heating
• No domestic hot water supply
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder
e.g. for the summer holiday period.
Note: The circulation pumps are switched on for a short
time every 24 hours to prevent them from seizing up.
Continuous reduced room temperature
• Central heating continuously with reduced room
temperature
• No domestic hot water supply
• Frost protection of the boiler and the DHW cylinder
e.g. to protect house plants during your winter holiday.
Note: The reduced room temperature can be adjusted
separately (see section headed “Changing the room
temperature” on page 11).
Setting the Energy Saving Mode for the Holiday Period
Select the domestic hot water temperature to suit your
personal requirements e.g. for showering.
1. Open the cover on the programming unit.
2. Turn the “w” selector knob to the required temperature.
1 graduation corresponds to a temperature change of
approx. 2°C.
Resetting the Time (if required)
1. Press the “I” button and turn the “G” selector
knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until the
required time is displayed.
2. Release the “I” button.
The time is stored.
Note: The date and time (CET) are preset in the factory
and are updated through the built-in long-life
battery.
Resetting for summer/winter time takes place
automatically.

Scanning Temperatures
You can scan various current temperature values on the
programming unit.
1. Choose the code number for the temperature
concerned from the table below:
*1 The temperature value displayed measures weather
conditions such as wind, sunshine and the wall
temperature of the building.
*2 0nly if the sensor is connected/activated.
2. Press the “?” button and turn the “G” selector
knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until the code
number 1for the corresponding temperature
appears in the display window.
The current temperature value 2appears at the
same time.
3. Release the “?” button.
The temperature scan is ended.

The heating pattern of your boiler is influenced by the
outdoor temperature and the settings of the “n” and
“N” selector knobs. You can change the settings if you
establish over a prolonged period during the heating
season that the room temperature does not meet your
requirements.
After changing the settings, please observe the difference
in the heating pattern over a sufficiently long period
before altering the settings again.
Short-term changes in the room temperature are carried
out with the “s” or “m” selector knobs (see “Changing
the room temperature” on page 11).
Note: In the factory settings the “n” selector knob is
set to 1.4 and the “’N” selector knob to 0
The setting of the “n” selector knob is normally in the
range of 0.2 to 0.8 for underfloor heating systems
• in the range of 0.2 to 0.8 for underfloor heating
systems
• in the range of 0.8 to 1.4 for modulating heating
systems
• in the range of 1.4 to 2.0 for heating systems with
boiler water temperatures over 75ºC / 167°F
