Beforelightingthestovecheckwiththe
installerthattheworkandchecks
describedintheInstallationInstructions
havebeencarriedoutcorrectlyand
thatthechimneyhasbeenswept,is
soundandfreefromanyobstructions.
Woodmustbedryandwellseasoned.
Ideallyitshouldbecut,splitand
stackedundercoverforatleastayear
andpreferablytwoyearsbeforebeing
burnt.Hardwoods,suchasAsh,Beech
andOakarepreferabletoSoftwoods
suchasPine.
Thewoodshouldbeburntinabedof
ashontheflatbaseofthestove.
Burningwetunseasonedwoodwill
resultinheavytardepositsinthe
chimneyandreducedoutputs.
Cutpeatshouldbedriedbefore
burningtoreducetardeposits.Peat
shouldbeburntinthesamemanneras
wood,ontheflatbaseofthestoveina
bedofash.
Doubles,TreblesandCobblesmaybe
burnt,donotusesinglesorcoaldust
(or“slack”.)Coalmustonlybeburnt
withtheoptionalcoalkit,burningiton
theflatbaseofthestovemaycause
damage.Alittleextracareisneeded
whenburningcoal,pleaserefertothe
section“SpecialPointsWhenBurning
HouseCoal”laterintheinstructions.
Awidevarietyofsmokelessfuelsare
available,manyofwhicharesuitable
foruseonyourCountry4.Someof
thesearelistedbelow:

Smokelessfuelsmustonlybeburnt

thecoverandspacingwasher(ensure
youkeeptheseinasafeplaceasyou
willneedtoreplacethemifthecoal
grateisremoved).
Feedtheriddlerrodthroughthehole
ontherighthandsideofthestove,and
slideonewasherontotherod,(ifthere
isnotsufficientroomtotherightofthe
stovetodothisthenremovethe
riddlerknob,fitonewasheroverthe
rodandthenslidetherodthroughthe
holefromtheinsideofthestove.)
Feedtherodthroughthetwoside
fireplatesandslidetheotherwasheron
totherodsothatthewashersendup
outsidethetwosidefireplates.With
thesidefireplatespushedtogetherfit
theretainingclipssothatthewashers
comeinsidetheclips.
Slidethesidefireplatesapartsothat
theyrestagainstthesidesofthe
firebox.Slotinthefrontandrear
supportplates.
Fitthegrateplatesintoposition
throughthefrontandreargrate
supportplates,makingsuretheylocate
correctlyontotheriddlerrod.
Fitthecoalretainersuppliedwiththe

Oninitiallighting,thestovemaysmoke
andgiveoffanodourasthesilicon
paintwithwhichthefireboxispainted
reactstotheheat.Thisisnormaland
willceaseafterashorttime,but
meanwhiletheroomshouldbekept
wellventilated.
Atfirstonlylightasmallfireandburn
itslowlyfortwohourstoallowany
residualmoistureinthechimneyto
evaporate.
Whenburningwoodor
peatonthebaseofthestovethere
mustbeabedofashtoprevent
damagetothebase.Whenfirstlighting
thestove,ifthereisnoashavailable,
thenmakealayerofsandorearth
about12mm(1/2inch)thickonthe
basetopreventanydamage.
Thestovemaybelitusingdrykindling
woodandpaperorfirelighters.Place
thepaper,orfirelighters,andkindling
onthebaseorthegrateandcoverwith
athinlayeroffuel.Openthespin
wheelinthedoorandopenthe
airwashcontrolfully(seeFig.1).Light
thepaperorfirelighters.Closethe
dooruntilthefueliswellignitedthen
loadwithfuelandadjusttheair
controlstotherequiredsetting.
Whenrelightingthestove,leavethe
ashonthebaseifburningwoodor
peat,unlessitisbecomingtoodeep,in
whichcasesomeofitmayberemoved.
Ifburningsolidfuelclearthegrateand
emptytheashpanbeforerelighting.
Therateofburningandhencethe
outputiscontrolledbythespinwheel
andtheairwashcontrol(seeFig.1).
Thespinwheelshouldbeusedwhen
lightingorwhenrapidburningis
required.Itshouldnotbeleftfully
openforlongperiodsasthiscancause
over-firing.Forovernightburningit
shouldbeclosed.
Theairwashcontrolisusedmostofthe
timetocontroltheburningrateandto
keeptheglassclean.Fullyextended
givesfullairwashforfasterburningand
cleanglasswhereasfullyclosedgives
slowovernightburning.
Keepthefireboxwellfilledbutdonot
allowfueltospilloverthetopofthe
fuelretainer.
Careshouldbetaken,especiallywhen
burningwood,thatfueldoesnot
projectoverthefuelretaineror
damagetotheglassmaybecaused
whenthedoorisclosed,itcanalso
causetheglasstoblackup.
Whenburningwoodorpeattheash
shouldbeallowedtobuilduponthe
baseofthefire.Itwillonlybe
necessarytoremovesomeashonceor
twiceaweekwhenitbeginstorestrict
theflowofairthroughthelogretainer.
Whenburningcoalorsmokelessfuel
theashpanshouldbeemptiedregularly
beforeitbecomestoofull,generally
onceortwiceaday.Neverallowthe
ashtoaccumulateintheashpansothat
itcomesincontactwiththeunderside
ofthegrateasthiswillseriously
damagethegrate.Careshouldbe
takentoensurethatashiscoolbefore
emptyingitintoplasticlinersorbins.
Afteremptyingtheashpan,riddlethe
firetoclearthefirebedofash.
Occasionaluseofapokermaybe
beneficial.
Tomakeashremovaleasier,when
burningcoalorsmokelessfuel,thereis
aspecial
available.Thisenablesthewhole
ashpantobeplacedinthesealed
carrierandtakenoutside.Thesemay
bepurchasedfromyoursupplieror,in
caseofdifficulty,directlyfrom
ourselves.
Whenloadingthestovetakecarenot
tosmotherthefire,insteadfillthe
fireboxintwostageswaitingbetween
eachstagefortheflamestoappear
abovethefire.
Afteraperiodofslumberingalways
opentheairwashcontrolandwaituntil
flamesappearabovethefuelbed
beforeopeningthedoor.
Burningcoalwillproducemoresoot
depositsthanotherfuels,especiallyif
thefireisrunatlowlevelsforlong
periods.Itisthereforevitaltocleanthe
throatplateregularly,weeklycleaning
isrecommended.
NeverfullyclosetheAirwashcontrol
whenburningcoal.
Thefiremayberunwiththedoor
openifrequired.Themorereactive
fuels,suchaswood,peat,coaland
homefire,willburnbetterwiththe
dooropenthanfuelslikephurnacite
andancit.Donotleavethefire
unattendedwiththedooropen.
Forovernightburningthefiredoor
mustbeclosed.
Whenburningwoodloadsomelarge
logsonthefireandallowtoburnfor
halfanhourbeforeclosingthespin
wheel,(thiswillhelptoreducetar
depositsinthechimney.)Leavethe
airwashcontrolslightlyopentohelp
keeptheglassclear.
Whenburningcoalorsmokelessfuel,if
thefireisverylowthenopen theair
controlsandrevivethefire,addinga
smallamountoffuelifnecessary.
Emptytheashpanandriddlethefire,
loadwithfuel,andthenclosethedoor
spinwheel.Theairwashcontrolmaybe
keptslightlyopentohelpkeepthe
doorglassclean.
Someexperimentationmaybe
necessarytofindthesettingmost
suitableforthetypeoffuelbeingused
andthedrawonthechimney.
Torevivethefire,emptytheashpan,(if
IMPORTANT Itwillnotbe
possibletokeeptheglasscleanifthis
controlisfullyclosed,particularly
immediatelyafterrefuelling.

wellloadonmorefuelasnecessaryand
adjusttheaircontrolstothedesired
setting.
Thestoveisfinishedwithahigh
temperaturepaintwhichwillwithstand
thetemperaturesencounteredin
normaluse.Thismaybecleanedwitha
damplint-freeclothwhenthestoveis
cold.Shouldre-paintingbecome
necessary,hightemperaturepaintsare
availablefromyoursupplierorfrom
stoveshops.
Mostdepositsontheglassmaybe
burntoffsimplybyrunningthefireata
fastrateforafewminutes.Ifit
becomesnecessarytocleantheglass
thenopenthedoorandallowitto
cool.Cleantheglassusingadampcloth
andthenwipingoverwithadrycloth.
Anystubborndepositsontheglass
mayberemovedwithaproprietary
stoveglasscleanerorceramichob
cleaner.Donotuseabrasivecleaners
orpadsasthesescanscratchthe
surfacewhichwillweakentheglassand
causeprematurefailure.
Itisimportantthatthethroatplateand
allthestovefluewaysarekeptcleanin
ordertopreventpotentiallydangerous
fumeemission.Theyshouldbecleaned
atleastmonthly,andmorefrequentlyif
necessary.Itisnotnecessarytoletthe
fireouttocarryouttheseoperations.
Thefrontofthethroatplateispulled
forwardandthenloweredasshownin
Fig.3.Anysootydepositsshouldthen
besweptfromtheplateandintothe
fire.
Returnthethroatplatetoitscorrect
position-raisethefrontoftheplate,
pushitbackandthenloweritontothe
retaininglugs.
Thechimneyshouldbesweptatleast
twiceayear.Wherethetopoutletor
verticalrearflueconnectorisusedit
willgenerallybepossibletosweepthe
chimneythroughtheappliance.
Firstremovethefuelretainerandthe
throatplate.Thensweepthechimney
ensuringthatsootisremovedfromall
horizontalsurfacesaftersweeping.
Insituationswhereitisnotpossibleto
sweepthroughtheappliancethe
installerwillhaveprovidedalternative
means,suchasasootdoor.After
sweepingthechimneytheappliance
flueoutletandthefluepipeconnecting
thestovetothechimneymustbe
cleanedwithafluebrush.
Afterclearinganysootfromwithinthe
stove,replacethethroatplate(seeFig.
3.)andthefuelretainer.
Differenttypesofsweep’sbrushesare
availabletosuitdifferentflueways.For
standardbrickchimneysawirecentre
sweep’sbrushfittedwithaguidewheel
isrecommended.Forprefabricated
insulatedchimneysthemanufacturers
instructionswithregardtosweeping
shouldbeconsulted.
Checkthat:
a)theairinletisnotobstructedinany
way,
b)chimneysandfluewaysareclear,
c)thatasuitablefuelisbeingused,
d)thatthereisanadequateairsupply
intotheroom,
e)thatanextractorfanisnotfittedin
thesameroomasthestove.
f)thereissufficientdrawinthe
chimney.Oncethechimneyiswarma
draughtreadingofatleast2.5mm
(0.10inches)watergaugeshouldbe
obtained.
Differencesinchimneydraughtsmean
thatthebestsettingsoftheaircontrols
willvaryfordifferentinstallations.A
certainamountofexperimentation
mayberequired,howeverthe
followingpointsshouldbenotedand
withalittlecareshouldenabletheglass
tobekeptcleaninmostsituations:
a)Wetorunseasonedwood,orlogs
overhangingthefrontfencewillcause
theglasstoblacken.
b)Theairwashreliesonasupplyof
heatedairtokeeptheglassclean,
therefore,whenlightingthestoveallow
thefirebedtobecomewellestablished
beforeclosingthespinwheel.Thismay
alsobenecessarywhenre-fuellingthe
stove.
c)Whenre-fuellingkeepthefuelasfar
backfromthefrontfenceaspossible,
donottrytofittoomuchfuelintothe
firebox.
d)Nevercompletelyclosetheairwash
control-asaguideitshouldbeatleast
aquarteropen.
e)Thespinwheelmaybekeptslightly
opentoassistinkeepingtheglass
clean.
Itisalwaysmoredifficulttokeepthe
glasscleanwhenrunningthestovevery
slowlyforlongperiods.
Ifblackeningoftheglassstilloccurs
checkthatallflueconnectionsandthe
blankingplatearewellsealed.Itisalso
importantthatthechimneydrawis
sufficientandthatitis notaffectedby
down-draught..Whenthechimneyis
warmadraughtreadingofatleast2.5
mm(0.10inches)watergaugeshould
beobtained.
Whenburningcoalsomeblackeningof
theglassmayoccurbelowthelevelof
thecoalretainer.Thiswillnotobscure
theviewofthefireoraffectits
performance.

d)Asuitablefuelisbeingused.
e)Doorsealsandairwashslideare
intact.
Ifthechimneyisthoroughlyand
regularlyswept,chimneyfiresshould
notoccur.However,ifachimneyfire
doesoccurclosethespinwheeland
theairwashcontrol,andtightlyclose
thedooroftheappliance.Thisshould
causechimneyfiretogooutwhichcase
thecontrolsshouldbekeptcloseduntil
thestovehasgoneout.Thechimney
andfluewaysshouldthenbecleaned.If
thechimneyfiredoesnotgooutwhen
theaboveactionistakenthenthefire
brigadeshouldbecalledimmediately.
Afterachimneyfirethechimney
shouldbecarefullyexaminedforany
damage.Expertadviceshouldbe
soughtifnecessary.

Sometypesoffirecementarecaustic

contactwiththeskin.Incaseofcontact
washwithplentyofwater.
Ifthereisapossibilityofdisturbingany
asbestosinthecourseofinstallation
thenpleaseuseappropriateprotective
equipment.
Theremustnotbeanextractorfan
fittedinthesameroomasthestoveas
thiscancausetheappliancetoemit
fumesintotheroom.
Astheoutputisbelow5kWa

required.

AuthorityBylawsandBuilding
Regulationsregardingtheinstallationof
SolidFuelburningappliances,fluesand
chimneysmustalsobeobserved.
TheoutputoftheCountry4is4.0kW
(13,600Btu/h).Thisoutputisbased
ona2hourlyre-fuellingcycleburning
seasonedhardwoodlogs,ora4hourly
re-fuellingcycleburningsmokelessfuel.
Inorderfortheappliancetoperform
satisfactorilythechimneyheightmust
notbelessthan4metresmeasured
verticallyfromtheoutletofthestove
tothetopofthechimney.Theinternal
dimensionsofthechimneyshould
preferablybe175mm(7inches)or
200mm(8inches)eithersquareor
roundandMUSTNOTBELESSTHAN
125mm(5INCHES).
Ifanexistingchimneyistobeuse
ditmustbesweptandchecked,itmust
beingoodcondition,freefromcracks
andblockages,andshouldnothavean
excessivecrosssectionalarea.Ifyou
findthatthechimneyisinpoor
conditionthenexpertadviceshouldbe
soughtregardingthenecessityof
havingthechimneylined.Ifitisfound
necessarytolinethechimneythena
liningsuitableforSolidFuelmustbe
used.
Ifthereisnoexistingchimneythena
prefabricatedblockchimneyoratwin
walledinsulatedstainlesssteelflueto
BS.4543canbeusedeitherinternally
orexternally.Thesechimneysmustbe
fittedinaccordancewiththe
manufacturersinstructionsandBuilding
Regulations.
Singlewallfluepipeissuitablefor
connectingthestovetothechimney
butisnotsuitableforusingforthe
completechimney.
Ifitisfoundthatthereisexcessive
drawinthechimneythenadraught
stabilisershouldbefitted.
Itisimportantthatthereissufficient
drawinthechimneyandthatthe
chimneydoesnotsufferfromdown-
draught.Whenthechimneyiswarm
thedrawshouldbenotlessthan
2.5mm(0.10inches)watergauge.Ifin
doubtaboutthechimneyseekexpert
advice.

Thefireplacemustallowgood
circulationofairaroundtheappliance
toensurethatmaximumheatis
transferredtotheroomandalsoto
preventthefireplacefromoverheating.
Agapof150mm(6inches)eachside
and300mm(12inches)abovethe
applianceshouldgivesufficientair
circulation.Ifawoodenmantelpieceor
beamisusedinthefireplaceitshould
beaminimumof460mm(18inches),
andpreferably600mm(24inches)
fromtheappliance.Insomesituations
itmaybenecessarytoshieldthebeam
ormantelpiecetoprotectit.
Thestovemustbeconnectedtothe
flueusing125mm(5")i/dpipe.This
maybestainlesssteel,castiron,or
thickwallsteelpipe.Straightlengthsof
CharnwoodPipetomatchthestove
areavailableifrequired.

thestovetotheflue.Theseare
illustratedinFigs.4to7.
Iftheoptionalverticalrearflue
connectorisusedthenthechimney

heating.Iftheboilerisfittedthenthe
roomheatingwillbereducedto2.0
kW(6,800Btu/h).
Thehotwatersystemshouldbea
gravitycircuitandmustbecorrectly
ventedasshownintheFig.8.
Adoublefeedindirecthotwater
storagecylindertoBS:1566part1
shouldbeusedinmostsituationswith
thestandardsteelboiler.Ifthe
applianceistobefittedinasoftwater
areathenadirecthotwatercylinder
maybeusedprovidedthatthestainless
boilerisfitted.
Allpipeworkintheprimarycircuit
mustbe28mmdiameterandtheflow
pipemustrisecontinuouslyfromthe
boilertotheopenvent.
Ifanindirectcylinderisusedthenthe
primarycircuitshouldbefilledwitha
suitableinhibitortopreventthebuild
upofscaleandcorrosion.
Theboilerreplacestherearfireplate
andthethroatplate.
Iffittedwithacoalkit,aspecialRear
GrateSupportPlate(Part
No.)isrequired,whichis
suppliedwiththeboiler.Thecoalkit
maybefittedoncetheboileris
installed.
Beforefittingtheboiler,removethe
frontfence,thethroatplateandthe
rearfireplate.KnockouttheKnock-
outsfortheboilertappingsintheback
ofthefirebox.
Fitonebacknutontheflowtappingto
comeflushwiththebackfaceofthe
boiler,andfittheboilerintothe
appliance.Placethefibrewashersover
thetappingsontheoutsideofthe
boilerandfitthetworemainingback
nuts,ensuringthattheboilerisheld
tightlyagainsttherearinsidefaceofthe

sandonthebaseofthestovebefore
lighting.Checktoensurethatsmoke
andfumesaretakenfromthe
applianceupthechimneyand
emittedsafely.Alsocheckalljoints
andseals.Oncompletionofthe
installationandcommissioningplease
leavetheoperatinginstructionswith
thecustomerandadvisethemonthe
useoftheappliance.
